Vibrations

LP (Item 65937) Atlantic, 1964 — Condition: Very Good
Excellent work as a leader from vibist Milt Jackson – very different than his Atlantic recordings with the Modern Jazz Quartet! This set has Milt working in a few different settings – including a great larger group with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Jimmy Heath on tenor, and Tate Houston on baritone – all arranged by Tom McIntosh, who also plays trombone on the tunes! A few more feature a small group with Flanagan on piano and Kenny Burrell on guitar – and titles include "With Malice Towards None", "Darbin The Red Fox", "Sweet Georgia Brown", "Algo Bueno", "Vibrations", and "Let Me Hear The Blues".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono red & purple label pressing. Cover has light wear and aging.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Atlantic, 1959. Very Good+
A beautiful setting for the vibes of Milt Jackson – a record that has his sublime chromatic sound stepping out in front of fuller orchestrations from Quincy Jones – never overdone, but with just the right sort of soulful focus to send Milt over the top! The album's an early example of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson

Ballads & Blues
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good
The title says it all with this one – as Milt Jackson plays a set of ballads, and a set of blues – but both in ways that really make the best of his warmly chromatic approach to the vibes! The players here vary on different tracks, but apart from MJQ regular John Lewis, the album also ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson

Goodbye
CTI, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sweet 70s electric work from the great vibist Milt Jackson – a record that has him hitting some nicely moody modes, and in a spacious style that's almost a 70s remake of the energy of the Modern Jazz Quartet! Cedar Walton plays piano and Fender Rhodes – and Hubert Laws is in the group ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson

Memphis Jackson
Impulse, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the grooviest albums ever from the legendary Milt Jackson – an upbeat, almost funky set of soul jazz tracks – played with some great grooves on the bottom! Milt Jackson

Sunflower
CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
Proof that Milt Jackson was easily the hippest member of the Modern Jazz Quartet – and one of the few who could really open up into different sounds away from that combo! This sweet 70s set for CTI is totally great – a whole new chapter for Jackson's vibes, and a real re-setting of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1964. Near Mint-
An extremely haunting version of the score to Porgy & Bess – recorded by the Modern Jazz Quartet at the height of their powers, in a gently soulful version that really takes off from the original. Yusef Lateef

Part Of The Search
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+
One of Yusef Lateef's more ambitious albums for Atlantic – kind of a "history of jazz" in styles and expressions, performed with a large set of players that runs the gamut of talents available at the time – all of whom come together strongly under Lateef's greater vision! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Heavy-jamming fusion from Billy Cobham – done at a time when he was already cutting plenty of heavy-jamming fusion! Teasin'
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+
The first album as a leader by guitarist Cornell Dupree – but one that was recorded after years of jazz, soul, and rock session and sideman work during the 60s and 70s! It's great to finally hear Cornell get out in front of the mix – hitting those lean, stretched-out lines that always ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Castro

Mood Jazz
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good
One of a few albums recorded by pianist Joe Castro for Atlantic – an overlooked player with a nice light touch on the keys! The "mood jazz" in the title is very fitting, as the record's got some nice touches from track to track – like wordless chorus vocals on a few numbers, ... LP, Vinyl record album
