Mess Of Blues

LP (Item 40218) Verve, 1963 — Condition: Near Mint-
Straight ahead soul jazz traditionalism – with a lineup that includes Johnny Hodges; alto sax. Wild Bill Davis; organ. Kenny Burrell; guitar. Joe Wilder; trumpet. Osie Johnson or Ed Shaughnessy; drums. Features Davis' "Stolen Sweets", Hodges' "A & R Blues", "Lost In Meditation", "Jones", "I Cried for You", "Love You Madly", and Hodges' "Little John, Little John". Produced by Creed Taylor.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(MGM stereo pressing. Cover has some spotty aging in back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bill Evans

Trio '65
Verve, 1965. Sealed Gatefold
Fantastic Verve Records material from Bill Evans – a set that follows the no-nonsense trio style of his Riverside material, but which definitely shows the evolving Evans style of the 60s! The group here is a nicely mellow one – bassist Chuck Israels, whose sound is tremendous – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

Best Of Cal Tjader
Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Cal cut so many great sides for Verve during the 60s, it's hard to imagine how anyone could come up with a "best of" – but this album fits the bill nicely, and includes a number of solid groover and Latin jazz tracks that fit just right! Includes "Sake & Greens", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oscar pays tribute to Frank – but he uses his keys, not his voice – to come up with some great renditions of tunes from Sinatra's classic Capitol years! Lester Young/Roy Eldridge

Jazz Giants '56
Verve, 1956. Near Mint- Gatefold
A set with the date of 1956 very firmly planted in the title – but one that's also gone onto become a timeless ensemble session from Verve Records! The feel here is almost in jam session mode, but perhaps a bit tighter – a group of all-star players from the mid-50s, with Lester Young ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oscar Peterson

Oscar Peterson Trio Plays
Verve, 1964. Near Mint-
The Oscar Peterson Trio plays – and pretty nicely too! The album's got a simple, unassuming cover and title – but it delivers some rock-solid grooves that are very much in the spirit of Peterson's famous sound in the 60s – that classic combination of piano, bass, and drums ... Verve, 1957. Very Good+
The 50s Basie band, loud and proud – recorded beautifully by Verve on the stage of the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957 – a great year, both for the group and the fest! Sonny Stitt

Only The Blues
Verve, 1957. Near Mint-
Probably the most classic of Stitt's sides for Verve – and certainly the one that gets rated time and time again by jazz collectors. We think it's pretty darn great – although we always wonder why folks don't give Stitt's other sides for Verve as much of a chance, because they're all ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kid Ory & Red Allen

Herbie Hancock

Fat Albert Rotunda
Warner, 1969. Sealed
A crucial record in the career of keyboard legend Herbie Hancock – the first session in which he really gets all-out funky, but in a way that's different than his spacier jams to come in the 70s! At some level, the album links the early soul jazz modes of Herbie's first few Blue Note ... LP, Vinyl record album
