Stan Getz & Joao GilbertoGetz/Gilberto (Verve master edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used ... $2.99
A landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with guitarist Joao Gilberto really pushed the format over the top – thanks in part to the vocals of Gilberto's lovely wife Astrud, who'd never sung in the studio before this famous recording! The record created a sound that was copied endlessly, and which catapulted Astrud to unbelievable fame worldwide – even though she was only included in the session at the last minute, because Joao couldn't sing in English – and the mix of Stan's tenor and Joao's guitar is wonderful – and backed throughout by this light, lilting bossa nova rhythms. Titles include the classic recording of "Girl From Ipanema", plus loads of other bossa classics like "Desafinado", "Cocovado", "O Grande Amor", and "Vivo Sonhando". Plus, this CD reissue package includes 2 bonus cuts – and a very cool tri-fold cover! CD
(Verve Master Edition in a tri-fold digipak. In great shape!)

✨✧ Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Sonny RollinsSonny Side Up (Verve Master Edition) ... CD
Verve, 1957. Used ... $4.99
A great little blowing session for Verve – one that has Dizzy Gillespie working here with two different "Sonnys" – Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins, both of whom play tenor on the set! The tracks here are all quite long and open – more loose vehicles for extended soloing than the usual sort of Verve tracks – almost a mini-jam session with the three horn giants in the lead. Rhythm is from the trio of Ray Bryant on piano, Tommy Bryant on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the real stars are the horn players – not just Diz, who cuts some of his hippest lines of the late 50s here, but also Rollins and Stitt, who seem to get a bit more care in recording than they did over at Prestige earlier in the decade. Album features 4 long tracks – "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", "After Hours", "I Know That You Know", and "The Eternal Triangle". CD

Classic work by one of the biggest players of the early Verve years – the incredible Flip Phillips, a very swinging tenor player! The album's got Flip working with small and medium sized bandst, with players that include Bill Harris, Billy Bauer, Harry Edison, and Hank Jones. Tracks are short, hopping, and Flip's tenor solos get plenty of space to "wail" – as the title implies! Tunes include "Flippin The Blues", "Funky Blues", "Singin The Blues", "Lover Come Back To Me", "Topsy", and "The Blue Room". CD

As beautiful an illustration of the genius of Lester Young as you could ever hope to find – tight, short small group numbers recorded with a keen focus on Young's amazing tone – all served up with beautiful sound throughout! The cover bills the set as being by Young and his orchestra, but the material's presented in a variety of different small group settings – with Verve regulars who include Ray Brown on bass, Hank Jones or John Lewis on piano, and Buddy Rich or Joe Jones on drums. There's no other horns on the date, so Lester's tenor is right out front on all numbers – and titles include "Little Pee Blues", "Neenah", "Thou Swell", "Up N Adam", "Encore", and "Frenesi". CD

Verve, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A studio album, but one that really has Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt recreating some of the bold energy of their live shows – coming across with a vibe that's much more Prestige Records than Verve, thanks to the presence of the Don Patterson trio on the set! Backing is by Don on Hammond, Paul Weeden on guitar, and Billy James on drums – a nicely loose combo that really lets the tenorists stretch out and show their stuff. The cuts are mostly standard material – "John Brown's Body", "Walkin", "Long Ago And Far Away" – but the twin-tenor sound is great, and Patterson's free organ lines riff away nicely! CD

Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley Quintet In Chicago (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mercury/Verve, 1959. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing tenor in a combo that's billed as being led by altoist Cannonball Adderley – but which is really more of a Miles Davis combo, without Miles! The set was recorded in Chicago when both were stopping through the city with Miles Davis' combo at the time – and since the rhythm section includes Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – the album's essentially a Kind Of Blue-era Miles album, recorded without Miles on trumpet, and grooving in a slightly more soul-based Adderley mode! Given the presence of Coltrane, there's a bit less of the gutbuckety soul jazz that Cannon was cutting in his own Quintet – but that's more than ok with us, as the Coltrane solos more than make up for that difference! The set's got 2 great originals by Coltrane – "The Sleeper" and "Grand Central" – plus the cuts "Wabash" and "Limehouse Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons & Sonny StittPrime Cuts (Boss Tenors & Boss Tenors In Orbit) ... LP
Verve, 1961/1962. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
A nice little 2-fer collecting two great meetings of two greats! Jug and Stitt go head to head on Boss Tenors, a classic album of tracks that perfectly captures the joy and fury of their live performances from years before! The record was cut in Chicago with a very hard rhythm section that includes John Houston on piano, Charles Williams on bass, and George Brown on drums – and it's way heavier than the usual Verve "meeting of the masters" session, and feels more like a record that should have been issued on Prestige or Argo. Both players are impeccable, and the solos stretch out for a long long very live time. Titles include "Blues Up & Down", "The One Before This", and "Counter Clockwise" – but these guys even groove amazingly on standards like "Autumn Leaves" and "No Greater Love". Boss Tenors In Orbit was a follow up one year later, an obscure little session with the pair once again recreating the energy of their live shows – as they stretch out nicely on very long tracks that have spare backing by the Don Patterson trio! The cuts are mostly standard stuff – "John Brown's Body", "Walkin", "Long Ago And Far Away" – but the twin-tenor sound is great, and Patterson's free organ lines riff away nicely! LP, Vinyl record album
(70s issue, still sealed with a small corner cut.)

Mid 60s concept pop from Appletree Theatre – a mix of unpredictable baroque pop, soaring string laden tunes, and more stripped down and moody numbers – and programmed as acts, in keeping with the theatre mode! What's most impressive, other than the tuneful songcraft, is that it never comes off as shtick, and the concept doesn't get in the way of the songs, making this a really nice discovery! Arranged as a 3 act play, with overture and epilogue, titles include "Lullaby", "Hightower Square", "Saturday Morning", "Nevertheless It Was Italy", "I Wonder If Louise Is Home", "E-Train", "Brother Speed", "Don't Blame It On Your Wife", "What A Way To Go" and more. A never-issued performance from the great Louis Armstrong – recorded late in life, and a tremendous testament to the way in which Armstrong had become so much more than just a standard jazzman in his final years! The set was recorded by the BBC, where Louis and the group performed in a broadcast by the British network – and the music is handled with this really subtle balance between Armstrong's 60s star power, and his never-ending commitment to jazz expression – a quality that's really enhanced here by some superb work from trombonist Tyree Glenn, whose presence is fantastic – in a lineup that also includes Marty Napoleon on piano, Joe Muranyi on clarinet, Buddy Catlett on bass, and Danny Barcelona on drums. Tunes include many of the strongest in the Armstrong songbook of the 60s – versions of "The Bare Necessities", "Mack The Knife", "Hello Dolly", "Mame", "What A Wonderful World", "A Kiss To Build A Dream On", "Blueberry Hill", and "Rockin Chair". Decca/Verve, 1947. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A classic live date from Satchmo – and expanded to include the complete performances on that legendary night at Boston's Symphony Hall – for the first time ever! Recorded in November of 1947 and originally released in '51, it's never before been issued with both the first and second sets that night. There's also a number of great tunes here that were released before in edited versions, but fully presented here. It's such wonderful stuff – both as a top-shelf document of this period of American jazz – and as a brilliant example of Satcho's charming stage presence. His trumpet and solo vocals are well captured, and you can here up humming along on the instrumentals, too. The players at this point who are All Stars, indeed, include Jack Teagarden on vocals and trombone, Barney Bigard on clarinet, Dick Cary on piano, Arvell Shaw on bass, and Sid Catlett on drums – plus some great vocals by Velma Middleton. 29 songs on 2CDs – in a hardback package with a great booklet – and featuring "When It's Sleepy Time Down South", "Stars Fell On Alabama", "Body And Soul", "Steak Face", "Back O'Town Blues", "St James Infirmary", "Mop Mop", "Jack Armstrong Blues", "That's My Desire", "C Jam Blues", "Baby Won't You Please Come Home", "Mahogany Hall Stomp" and more – many previously unreleased! ✨✧ Dorothy AshbyAfro-Harping (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Cadet/Verve, 1968. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
One of the grooviest records ever – a sublime blend of African percussion, soulful orchestrations, and Dorothy Ashby's amazing electric harp! By the time of this landmark album, Dorothy had been knocking around the jazz world for a number of years, but it wasn't until she hooked up with Richard Evans at Cadet Records that her sound really began to cook – breaking down genres and expectations in the trademark style of the best late 60s sides from the Chicago underground. The record's got a bit of funk, a bit of jazz, and a heck of a lot of soul – and the setting works perfectly for Dorothy's harp, giving it a lot more room to work around than some of her smaller jazz combo albums. The album includes two great originals – "Soul Vibrations" and "Afro-Harping" – both of which have a nice funky edge, and a groovy soulful bounce – and other tunes include "Lonely Girl", "Life Has Its Trials", "Look Of Love", "Come Live With Me", and a great version of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower". Great new version – completely remastered from the original tapes – with 8 never-issued bonus tracks, all alternate takes of album tunes – plus a new booklet of notes! CD

Cadet/Verve, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
Incredible work from the amazing Dorothy Ashby – a brilliant set of funky and spiritual tunes, set to full backings from Chicago soul arranger Richard Evans! This album is easily one of Ashby's greatest, and it's dedicated to the writings of Omar Khayyam – one of the forces guiding Dorothy's more spiritual sound at the end of the 60s, clearly opened up in a way that's not unlike the direction of Alice Coltrane's work, but a lot more focused and a lot more funky! Ashby not only plays her usual jazz harp, but also koto as well, and even sings a bit too – and the larger group directed by Evans features work by Stu Katz on vibes and kalimba, Lenny Druss on flutes, and Cash McCall on guitar – all in a groove that's really a precursor to the Earth Wind & Fire generation of the Chicago scene! Titles include the amazing break "The Moving Finger" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Dust", "Joyful Grass & Grape", "Heaven & Hell", "Wax & Wane", "Shadow Shapes", "For Some When Young", "Myself When Young", and "Drink". Verve, Late 1960s. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
One of the most unusual albums in the career of trumpet legend Chet Baker – done at a time when he was definitely going through some changes in his life, which also led to some changes in his music too! This set's not unlike a similar date that Stan Getz did for Verve around the same time – larger backings, and tunes that include some contemporary hits that are redone as jazz vehicles – arranged by Jerry Styner, and featuring instrumentation from some key members of The Wrecking Crew! Chet sings a bit – and the richness of the arrangements really push his vocals on those numbers – and honestly, his trumpet has maybe more punch than usual too – almost as if he'd been listening to some of the Hugh Masekela records on Uni, and said "hey, I've got to get my horn out there too!" There's a great mix of melancholy and joy on the record – the former especially in the set's beautiful version of "Come Saturday Morning" – next to other tunes that include "And When I Die", "Evil Ways", "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "Something", "Spinning Wheel", and "Vehicle". A set that's got Chet Baker Quintet on the cover, but which features the American trumpeter in a range of different settings – all brought together as his final album for the Barclay label in Paris! The set does feature a quintet on some tracks – with tenor work from either Bobby Jaspar or Jean-Louis Chautemps, depending on the tunes – both players who would really awaken new sonic sensibilities that Baker would explore with other tenorist in coming years – such as the great Phil Urso! There's also some quartet passages, and octet work that shows a wonderful ear for the overall sound of the group – and other players on the set include Benny Vasseur on trombone on the octet tracks, and a range of different pianists, including Rayond Fol, Rene Utreger, and Francy Boland. Titles include "Vline", "Exitus", "Chet", "Cheeketah", "Dinah", "Tasty Pudding", and "Anticipated Blues" – much more unsual material than some of Baker's other overseas sessions of the time! Excellent work from that wonderful 50s moment when Count Basie was really reinventing his band – stripping things down, getting nice and lean, and putting in this soulful kick to the rhythms that really helped modernize the groove! The set's a mix of arrangements from Ernie Wilkins, and a few more by Neal Hefti – both in that masterful sense of space that helped this Basie band really isolate its key soloists on record – not just the Count's fantastic lines on piano, but also work from Freddie Greene on guitar, Joe Newman and Thad Jones on trumpets, Benny Powell on trombone, Marshall Royal on alto, and both Frank Wess and Frank Foster on tenor and flute! Titles include "Big Red", "Lollypop", "Dolphin Dip", "Low Life", "Slats", "Move", and "Flute Juice". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1963. Used ... $8.99
Count Basie and Quincy Jones were always a mighty mighty combination – and there's no finer proof of that fact than this sweet little set! Quincy had a way of swinging Basie's group even more than Neal Hefti did – really letting the piano step out front, and swinging the larger horn parts in this mode that was extremely soulful, yet never with the hoke that could sometimes mar a Basie set – a style that was very 60s groovy, and which really helped breathe new life into the Count's ensemble! The album's a killer all the way through – and the tunes are all originals – written by Quincy, and arranged especially for the set – great little numbers that include "Nasty Magus", "Dum Dum", "Boody Rumble", "Count Em", "Belly Roll", and "Lil Ol Groovemaker Basie"! A sweet 70s collection of late 60s work from George Benson – tracks recorded in 1968 for Verve, originally from the albums Giblet Gravy and Goodies! The set list here really does a great job of picking out the best numbers – the kind of clean, lean tunes that were pushing Benson from his soul jazz roots towards a much bigger audience – yet still without any of the commerciality of later years to come. Players on the tracks include Herbie Hancock on piano, Billy Cobham on drums, Ron Carter on bass, and Johnny Pacheco on percussion – and arrangements are by Horace Ott and Tom McIntosh. Workshop Jazz/Verve, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 29.99
An amazing record – one of the best on Motown's short-lived Workshop Jazz subsidiary! The album is the first to feature Roy Brooks as a leader – and the super-hip drummer from Detroit really knows what to do with the opportunity! He's working here with a hip group that includes members of the Horace Silver quintet – including Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor, and Gene Taylor on bass – as well as Detroit contemporaries George Bohannon on trombone and Hugh Lawson on piano. The overall style of the record is quite different from Brooks' work with Silver – and has a much more open-ended feeling emotionally – an early hint at the qualities that Roy would unveil on his rare indie sides at the start of the 70s. The tracks are a mix of soul jazz numbers and others with a rougher-hewn sense of modernism – almost like the excellent work coming out of Chicago during the early 60s, from artists like Gene Shaw or the MJT+3. All the players are at their best, and the album features some of the nicest tenor work we've ever heard from Cook. Titles include "Soulsphere", "Soulin", "Homestretch", "Passin The Buck", and "My Secret Passion". LP, Vinyl record album

About as classic as you can get for the Brown/Roach group – recorded at Basin Street with a group that includes Richie Powell on piano, Sonny Rollins on tenor, and George Morrow on bass. Tracks are tight and in that firey hardbop mode the pair pioneered – and titles include "Gertrude's Bounce", "Powell's Prances", "Time", "The Scene Is Clean", and "I'll Remember April". Most notable is the work by Powell on the record – as Bud's brother really shines here, turning out some great original compositions, and arranging the group with tight precision! Brilliant work by the team of Clifford Brown and Max Roach – a seminal hardbop album that was one of the few to bridge the east and west coast scenes! The set was recorded in LA under the joint leadership of Brown and Roach – and features the classic quintet lineup that included Harold Land on tenor, Richie Powell (Bud's brother!) on piano, and George Morrow on bass. The mix of Roach's heavy full-on drumming and Brown's lyrical beauty is beyond compare – and Land's angular and sensitive tenor lines provide a perfect link between the two. Overlooked genius from pianist Dave Burrell – an artist whose talents never cease to amaze us! The album is one of a few key sets that Burrell recorded on the Paris scene at the end of the 60s – and it's got a visionary style that's somewhat free, yet also guided by a shared energy that unites the work of the players wonderfully. There's a sense of composition here that's spread out in the mood of the tracks – one that almost gives you the feeling that Burrell was directing all players from the piano, yet also letting them open up with their own ideas over the course of the longer tracks. Roscoe Mitchell, Alan Silva, and Don Moye all play on the set – and titles include "After Love part 1 – Questions & Answers", "After Love part 2 – Random", and "My March". CD

Verve, Mid 60s. Used ... $9.99
Not "blues" like you might expect from the title – but a hip batch of tracks that has guitarist Kenny Burrell soloing over these great large arrangements by Don Sebesky – playing in a warmly chromatic mode that's similar to the work that Wes Montgomery also cut with Sebesky, but with that special sense of rasp and color that's Kenny's own! The tracks all have a nicely angular quality – Burrell taking care of the frontline solos with ease, and Sebesky letting the band fall behind him in broad washes of color, tone, and mood – blue-tinged, but hardly blues at all, save for a few chromatic hues that appear from time to time. Titles include "Sausalito Nights", "Were You There", "Burning Spear", "Angel Eyes", "The Preacher", and "The Common Ground". CD

Verve, 1965. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
A standout session from guitar giant Kenny Burrell – and a set that's maybe one of his most modern albums of the 60s! The record features backings from arranger Gil Evans – most famous for his work with Miles Davis, and working here in a style that's nicely different with Kenny – less overwhelming in his approach to the charts, with a mode that still really lets Burrell dominate, and maybe even sets him free from the role of rhythm, so that he can really show off some of the more sophisticated sides of his playing! The album's one of a handful that have Burrell working this way from the time – and as on the others, there's sometimes a quality that's even more soulful than some of his records with smaller groups – a real surprise, but a great one too. The group features an excellent array of top-shelf musicians – including Johnny Coles on trumpet, Lee Konitz on alto, Steve Lacy on soprano, and Richie Kamuca on tenor – and titles include "Lotus Land", "Downstairs", "Moon & Sand", "Terrace Theme", "Greensleeves", and "Loie". The rhythms here are quite gentle, almost spare at times – and always touched with Haynes' great sense of lyricism – and Kenny's guitar lines are right out front, really dominating the set and freely flowing with plenty of warm chromatic hues, and styles that echo a bit more modernism than we've heard in other work of his from the late 50s! A&M/Verve, 1989. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 29.99
A really back to basics album from trumpeter Don Cherry – or maybe a set that goes back to basics that Don didn't even have, given that most folks initially heard him in the freewheeling group of Ornette Coleman! The album's straighter than his work with Ornette, and also different than his 70s experiments with world cultures and fusion – as the record has a tight, acoustic vibe – Cherry blowing these great solos on pocket trumpet, in the company of a swinging lineup that also features James Clay on tenor, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums! The lack of piano is definitely a nod to Don's roots, and there's certainly an open vibe to the record at times – but things are mostly straight and swinging, in a way that opens up another level in Cherry's long and varied career. Titles include "Art Deco", 'When Will The Blues Leave", "Body & Soul", "Bemsha Swing", "Maffy", "Folk Medley", "The Blessing", "Passing", "I've Grown Accustomed To Your Face", and "Compute". One of the best albums that Al Cohn and Zoot Sims ever cut together – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of their collaborations during the 50s and 60s! The set's got a nice small group feeling, and is a bit more open and relaxed than some of their RCA material – still in the sharp, thoughtful mode that marked both Cohn and Sims' sessions – but also a bit more earthy, too – possibly because they've got Mose Allison in the combo on piano. The album includes the incredible spare sax-only track "Improvisation For Unaccompanied Saxophones", which is an extremely haunting track that sounds unlike anything the pair had ever done together – and other titles have the full quintet playing, tunes that include "The Opener", "The Note" and "You N Me". George ColemanMy Horns Of Plenty ... CD
Verve, 1991. Used ... $5.99
A rare moment in the major label spotlight for George Coleman – an early 90s session for Verve, and one that should have gotten him the same sort of ongoing recognition as contemporary sessions at the label by JJ Johnson, Randy Weston, and Joe Henderson! The format here is spare, but nicely varied – with Coleman on a tenor, soprano, and alto saxes alongside a trio of Harold Mabern on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. With a rhythm section that strong, you could almost throw just about any player up against them and get something great – but Coleman's also really pushing to the forefront of the tunes on most numbers, blowing with a deep voice and strong sound that almost recalls some of the work that Eric Alexander did in later years with Mabern. ✨✧ Alice ColtraneUniversal Consciousness (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Impulse/Verve, 1971. Used Gatefold ... $11.99
One of Alice Coltrane's most adventurous albums – a beautiful blend of organ, harp, percussion, and strings – much of which are transcribed for the album by Ornette Coleman! The most haunting aspect of the album is Alice's work on organ – spare, jagged, with a nascent soulful quality that's quite different from her piano work on other Impulse albums. The strings provide a sheet of sound – a shimmering backdrop to support Alice's work on the keys – moving forward tentatively, but growing in energy as the album progresses through a host of Eastern spiritual influences. Alice is way past jazz at this point – moving towards the new level of consciousness hinted at in the title, growing majestically on tracks that include "Oh Allah", "Sita Ram", "Hare Krishna", "Universal Consciousness", and "The Ankh of Amen-Ra". Verve, 1957. Very Good+ ... $9.99
An early gem from Johnny Dankworth – the hard-swinging British arranger who'd release some great work on these shores in the 60s! The record is slightly unusual in that all of the arrangements (and most compositions) are by Dankworth, but half of them are played by the Laurie Monk Quartet and Dickie Hawdon Quintet – and not Johnny's own group! The larger Dankworth ensemble is full on horns, and heavy on rhythm – a tightly-swinging large group that's one of the best manifestations of the big band in the post-swing era of the time. Monk's group has a smaller, intimate feel that's heavy on Laurie's trombone and Johnny Dankworth's alto – and Dickie Hawdon's combo features some great sax work from Dankworth himself. A really fantastic album from the young Blossom Dearie – and in a way, a record that kind of sets the tone for all the greatness to come in future recordings! Here, Blossom is already breaking from standard jazz vocal modes – using some of the hipness she'd picked up in France to really further the amazing sense of phrasing that makes her so different from just about anyone else – in a way that's subtle, but which really sounds a heck of a lot different than Verve recordings by artists like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, or any other of their vocalists of the 50s. A UK two-fer that brings together two classic 50s sessions by the pair! First up is Trumpet Battle – and before you ask, the cover doesn't feature pictures of these guys whacking each other over their heads with trumpets! Instead, the set's one of those Verve relaxed jam session ones – with long tracks that let the two main soloists work out against each other, not really battling, but trading lines like the confident leaders they are. Rhythm is by Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Louis Bellson, and Ray Brown – and tracks include "Sometimes I'm Happy", "I've Found A New Baby", "I Can't Get Started", and a long "Ballad Medley", which has the trumpeters taking a track at a time, switching off one to one. Next is Trumpet Kings – in which Diz and Roy come together in a nice blend of two traditions – blowing in a relaxed mode that's less of the "battle" you might expect from the title – and more of a friendly exchange of solos, recorded in the open and laidback style of Verve at the time. Duke Ellington makes a rare Verve appearance on this classic album – and works strongly in the mode of earlier sides recorded for the label by Johnny Hodges! There's a relaxed, small group feel going on here – one that's a bit different than some of the tighter Ellington work on Columbia during the 50s, and which almost paves the way for some of the more intimate piano sides that Duke would record during the 60s. In a way, Hodges is almost at the lead – given how comfortable he is here in a Verve setting – and other players include Harry Edison on trumpet, Les Spann on guitar, Sam Jones on bass, and Jo Jones on drums. The real charm, as always, is Hodges' solos, lean, mean, raspy, and soulful – and titles include "Weary Blues", "Royal Garden Blues", "Loveless Love", "St Louis Blues", and "Wabash Blues". CD

Verve, 2024. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
A great summation of the decades-long genius of Brian Eno – served up here in tracks that were chosen to accompany the documentary on the man and his music, in a lineup that also includes a few key collaborations and even some unreleased titles too! The set brings together early vocal numbers with more experimental tracks and key ambient moments – with contributions from David Byrne, Roger Eno, John Cale, Fred Again, Cluster, and Daniel Lanois – all artists who are clearly in Eno's playhouse here, and not the other way around! The unreleased tracks are "Lighthouse #429", "All I Remember", and a live Acropolis version of "By This River", done with Roger Eno – next to other tracks that include "Emerald & Lime", "Hardly Me", "Regiment", "There Were Bells", "Motion In Field", "Spinning Away", "C'Mon", "Sky Saw", "The Secret Place", and "Ho Renomo". Bill EvansBill Evans Trio with Symphony Orchestra ... CD
Verve/Universal (Japan), 1966. Used ... $14.99
Tremendous work from Bill Evans – one of his rare non-trio sides of the 60s – and a stunning batch of tunes with backings from the mighty Claus Ogerman! Most of the tunes here are of classical origin, but they're recast by Evans and Ogerman with almost a soundtrack sensitivity – Bill's piano up front, moving spaciously at very much its own pace – none of the too-virtuoso styles of other 60s jazz-meets-classical players. And Ogerman's backings are also great too – hardly ever strong, and more just light shading amidst the notes of Bill's piano – beautifully sliding in to bring a nice level of warm to the tunes. Titles include a sublime reading of "Pavane", plus the tracks "Granadas", "Time Remembered", "Blue Interlude", "Elegy", and "My Bells". CD

✨✧ Bill EvansConversations With Myself ... LP
Verve, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $39.99
Bill Evans meets Bill Evans – in a uniquely-styled session that features overdubbed solo lines from Bill, creating a multi-piano sound that's really great! The approach sounds gimmicky, but it's not – and Evans carries all the sensitivity you might expect from the title and image on the cover – a personal, up-close style that's nicely free from piano solo cliches, given the extra work of the overdubs. There's a nicely rhythmic feel to most numbers, and the piano lines often work in chromatic counterpoint to create a warmly sparkling quality to the set. Titles include "Round About Midnight", "Blue Monk", "Theme From Spartacus", "Stella By Starlight", and "NYC's No Lark". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $69.99
Bill Evans is working with a really wonderful trio here – one that features Gary Peacock on bass and Paul Motian on drums – both budding young modernists who help Evans reach some new sounds on the set! The record starts out with a groove that's perhaps more inside than you'd expect – but it then quickly moves into the sort of sensitively-played numbers that really made Evans a key force in jazz during the early 60s – supported by equally personal work from Peacock and Motian, who both clearly feel free to move beyond common piano trio cliches. Tracks include "Dancing In The Dark", "Always", "Little Lulu", "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", "Everything Happens To Me", and "For Heaven's Sake". LP, Vinyl record album

Bill EvansTrio '65 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Verve, 1965. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
Fantastic Verve Records material from Bill Evans – a set that follows the no-nonsense trio style of his Riverside material, but which definitely shows the evolving Evans style of the 60s! The group here is a nicely mellow one – bassist Chuck Israels, whose sound is tremendous – and drummer Larry Bunker – a player you might know from percussion work on other albums, which seems to give him a very sensitive touch on the drum kit here! Both players have a dancing quality that goes far beyond strict rhythmic timekeeping – and this approach opens up Evans' solos in to a freer mode than on some of his early 60s sets. The result is a wonderful album that really transforms the tunes – as you'll hear on the set of tracks that include "Round Midnight", "Israel", "Elsa", and "How My Heart Sings". A magnificent follow up to the Undercurrent album from the team of Bill Evans and Jim Hall – and like that one, a set that features amazing interplay between piano and guitar! Hall's guitar has never sounded better – and in the airy company of Evans, it takes on many of the same qualities as on his famous late 50s recordings in the Jimmy Guiffre trio. Bill's work is great too – almost more tonally focused than before, with perfectly chosen notes that resonate beautifully in this very spare space. Titles include "Jazz Samba", "All Across The City", "Angel Face", and "Turn Out The Stars". CD

Bill Evans & Shelly ManneEmpathy ... LP
Verve, 1962. Very Good Gatefold ... $14.99 24.99
The cover co-credits Bill Evans and Shelly Manne as the leader of the set – and that distinction's an important one – as the record has a slightly different feel than some of Bill's other 60s work for Verve! The sound is often a bit stronger, somewhat bolder – and although Manne's not a monster on the drums, he does have a way of directing the tunes that's a bit different than some of Evans' other piano-led albums. Bass is by Monty Budwig, who's nicely sensitive to the talents of both players – and there's almost an equally-weighted melodic feel to all three elements of the trio – which really rounds out the record nicely. Titles include "The Washington Twist", "Danny Boy", "Let's Go Back To The Waltz", "With A Song In My Heart", "Goodbye", and "I Believe In You". LP, Vinyl record album

An open-ended live date from Bill Evans – recorded at the auspicious venue of Town Hall, but recorded with a warmth that matches Evans' smaller club sessions of the 60s! The sound here is possibly a bit more focused and direct than some of the moodier, mellower Evans live records – well pointed at the start, but then moving into some gentler chromatic modes as the set moves on – all with gentle accompaniment from Chuck Israels on bass and Arnold Wise on drums. Titles include trio versions of "I Should Care", "Spring Is Here", "Who Can I Turn To" and "Make Someone Happy" – then Evans takes a 13 minute solo turn, dedicating a suite to the memory of his father! Nice two-fer that brings together 2 spare, open sets from Bill Evans, in a nice trio with Gary Peacock & Paul Motian on the first and paired with guitarist Jim Hall on the second. One of Bill Evans' most beautiful albums from the time – and one that features the fantastic team of Jeremy Steig and Eddie Gomez, who were cutting some beautiful records for other labels at the time. Steig's flute later got very silly, but at this point, he's got a raw stripped-down sound that works perfectly with Gomez's warm, slightly funky basslines – making for a slightly soulful approach that really transforms the session. Tal Farlow was one of the all-time greats of jazz guitar during the 50s, and an album like this captures him at his finest! The set's a no-nonsense batch of tracks that features Tal with a trio that includes Eddie Costa on piano and Vinnie Burke on bass – a wonderfully understated lineup that lets Farlow's guitar take plenty of lead space! Tunes are mostly familiar, but it's Tal's tone that rocks the record – as he's both once raw with the strings, and lightly melodic with his playing. Eddie FisherThird Cup (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Cadet/Verve, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 29.99
An amazing album by the great guitarist Eddie Fisher – and completely unlike his later funk records! Eddie plays stripped down jazz with a small combo that includes organ by Robert Selby, bass by Paul Jackson, and some rhythm guitar by Phil Westmoreland – and the twin-guitar approach creates this super-dope style that's light years ahead of its time, with a sophistication that points the way to later mid 70s work on labels like CTI and Kudu! Eddie's guitar work is an incredible exercise in spareness and soulfulness – best heard on the fantastic "Third Cup", a long drawn-out jazz stepper that's got to be heard to be believed. The cut's been a favorite on the Chicago jazz stepper's scene for years – and it alone is worth the price of the album. However, the record features some other wonderful stuff – like a sublime version of "Shadow Of Your Smile" that runs for a bubbling 12 minutes – plus the originals "Shut Up", "Scorched Earth", and "Two By Two". A beautiful classic from mid 60s Verve – and the kind of a session that we wouldn't have expected to come off so well! In a style they were using with older artists at the time, Verve brought Ella and Duke into the studio together – with Duke's band and compositions providing the structure of the set, and Ella handling vocals. The tunes are mostly Ellington classics, but they provide a nice change of pace for the Fitzgerald of the 60s – taking Ella into more sophisticated territory on some darker themes that really surprised us. Verve, 1960. New Copy Gatefold ... $24.99 38.99
An album that's often overlooked amidst some of the bigger "songbook" Verve sessions by Ella Fitzgerald – yet a really special record that shows off a side of Ella that's not ever captured this well on other records! The record was also initially billed as tied into the book and film Let No Man Write My Epitaph – but there's nothing soundtrack-like at all about the performance, as Fitzgerald works with only backing from pianist Paul Smith – a player who sounds wonderful next to the singer, and brings just the right sort of inflections to open up Ella's vocals for the date! There's a spare quality that's completely captivating – proof that Fitzgerald was a hell of a jazz singer at the core, even when her star was rising on the international scene – maybe even more compelling without any large arrangements at all, as she takes on superb material that includes versions of "Misty", "Black Coffee", "Angel Eyes", "I Cried For You", "Who's Sorry Now", "September Song", "Then You've Never Been Blue", and "Reach For Tomorrow".
