❔
An album that certainly lives up to the promise of its title – as it's filled with amazing instrumentation, groundbreaking compositions, and a sound in jazz that few ears could imagine at the time! The groove here is extremely modal – all instruments rolling along on the same rhythmic pulse, with drums, bass, trumpet, and alto sax incredibly intertwined! Ornette's really got an edge on his instrument – cutting even more deeply here than the clipped, punctuated cornet work of Don Cherry – and the rhythm team of Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins are simply amazing – not just keeping up with the energy of Ornette, but also really helping facilitate it as well! Titles include the haunting "Lonely Woman", plus "Peace", "Chronology", and "Focus on Sanity".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo blue & green pinwheel label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and a name in marker. Labels have a name in marker.)

Good

  • A record that you'd buy to play, cheap, but which you wouldn't buy for collecting.
  • Will have marks across all parts of the playing surface, and will most likely play with surface noise throughout. May have some other significant flaws, such as residue, or a track that skips.
  • In most cases, a poor quality copy of a very difficult to find record.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ornette Coleman

European Concert
Unique Jazz (Italy), Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A great Ornette Coleman set from the 60s – although we're not entirely sure, as the pacakge is a bit short on details! The notes on the back aren't much help either, but they do list Dewey Redman as joining Ornette on tenor and musette, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Change Of The Century
Atlantic, Early 60s. Sealed
One of our favorite albums of all time from the legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman – an essential showcase for his early harmelodic concepts, but with a vibe that's maybe more pulsatingly rhythmic than on other albums from the time! Ornette plays his incredible plastic alto sax, which has ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Love Call
Blue Note, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A really great late 60s session from Ornette Coleman – one that shows is increasing expansion in sounds and styles, and which also offers a bridge between avant jazz generations too! That bridge comes in the presence of Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums – a surprising ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Empty Foxhole
Blue Note, 1966. Near Mint-
One of our favorite Ornette Coleman albums of the post-Atlantic 60s years – a set that still hangs onto some of the bold rhythmic conception of his previous records, but also points the way towards his freer jazz modes to come! The group's a trio – with really tremendous work from ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette!
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+
A stunning session by Ornette, and one that always seems to get overlooked in discussions of his albums for Atlantic! Ray Charles & Milt Jackson

Soul Meeting
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
Fairly decent jazz session, and one in which Ray plays alto sax and electric piano, along with his usual acoustic piano. Jazz Modes

Jazz Modes
Atlantic, 1959. Very Good+
One of the rarest albums by this fantastic combo from the late 50s! The band features the very strange mix of French horn, tenor, and soulful piano – played by Julius Watkins, Charlie Rouse, and Gildo Mahones, respectively. The sound shouldn't work, but it does, and beautifully – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Brubeck

All The Things We Are
Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint-
One of the best Dave Brubeck albums from later years – and one of the hippest! Handle With Care
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+
Great work by this legendary hard swinging band – an early 60s American album issued on Atlantic Records, in the years before the Clark Boland Band's legendary run on MPS! Despite the early date, the album's got all the core elements of the band's sound in place – soaring rhythms, ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Lewis

John Lewis Piano
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good+
One of the strongest sessions recorded by pianist John Lewis in the 50s – a date that shows depths of his talents that run even greater than his work with the Modern Jazz Quartet, quite possibly because is work on piano is at the forefront of the record throughout! There's a sense of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Randy Weston

African Cookbook
Atlantic, Mid 60s/1972. Near Mint-
A killer album of African-tinged jazz – recorded privately by Randy Weston in the mid 60s, and not issued formally until 1972 by Atlantic Records! The session shows Weston at the height of his modernist experiments – and at a time when his work was going largely undocumented, probably ... LP, Vinyl record album
