Truth, Liberty & Soul – Live in NYC – The Complete 1982 NPR Jazz Alive (3LP set – 180 gram pressing)

LP (Item 870148) Resonance, 1982 — Condition: Sealed
3LP Box Set
(€48.77 || £43.16 || ¥6594) (approx.)

A famous broadcast performance by this legendary bassist – but one that's presented here in a version that features 40 minutes of music that never aired on the original program! This well-recorded set captures Jaco Pastorius at his height – after a huge step forward in sound and style in the 70s – to a time when he was exploring so many new ideas, and new ways of expressing himself on the electric bass – an instrument that he completely transformed for generations to come! The group's a large one – Jaco's Word Of Mouth ensemble – with Bob Mintzer on tenor and soprano sax, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Peter Erskine on drums, and Don Alias on percussion – plus Othello Molineaux on some mighty cool steel drums. There's a larger horn section, too – and Toots Theielmans plays a bit of guest harmonica – and most tracks are nice and long. Titles include "Okonkole Y Trompa", "Three Views Of A Secret", "Invitation", "Soul Intro/The Chicken", "Twins", "Bass & Drum Improvisation", "Reza/Giant Steps", and "Mr Fonebone". (Un-numbered limited edition.)  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Things Are Getting Better
Riverside, 1958. Very Good
An album that definitely lives up to its title – given the great change and evolution in the style of Cannonball Adderley's music – definitely pointed towards the soul jazz fame to come in the 60s! The group here has Adderley's alto in the company of some all-stars who may not be his ... LP, Vinyl record album
That's The Way It Is
Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
At the end of the 60s, Milt Jackson and Ray Brown cut some very groovy records together – teamed up in a great pairing of styles that pushed both of them way past the more standard sounds of earlier years! This album's one of the best of the bunch – as it features pianist Monty ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1953/1954. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Two wonderful early 50s albums recorded by Count Basie for Verve – both sessions aimed at the dancefloor, and served up with an undeniably soulful groove! The style here is hard and swinging – the older Basie mode refined for the 50s – thanks to arrangements by Ernie Wilkins, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Live!
Watt, 1981. Near Mint- Gatefold
Great sounds from the Carla Bley band of the 80s – and a record that still has all the modern elements of Bley's initial years in jazz, but also brings in some warmer elements too! If anything, these years unlocked a playfulness that we might not have expected from Carla years before – ... LP, Vinyl record album
We're All Together Again For The First Time
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+
Kind of a meeting of two different generations of Dave Brubeck – as the group here features Paul Desmond's alto sax, a key force in Dave's early recordings – and the baritone sax of Gerry Mulligan, a player who'd worked often with Brubeck in the late 60s and early 70s! The blend of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Birth Of A Notion
Sessom, 1985. Very Good
Chicago reed player Ed Wilkerson (also known as the leader of 8 Bold Souls, and a member of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble) formed this group in the 80's as sort of a mixed large band of Chicago avant garde players, but with more of a focus on tighter swingin' sounds. This, their only LP, includes ... LP, Vinyl record album
Unleashed
Wild Pitch, 1994. Near Mint-
The leftfield, loopy charm of the first UMC's LP is subverted for Unleashed – in which the crew takes a turn towards hardcore – a move similar to one made label mates Main Source around that point in time. The beats are a bit more walloping, too – and at least on a few of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Brunswick, 1976. Very Good

Buddah, 1976. Very Good
The very first album from Michael Henderson – but a set that already finds him very much at the top of his game – thanks to previous work with Miles Davis and Norman Connors! C'est Chic
Atantic, 1978. Very Good+
A massive set from the legendary Chic – and a set that has the dancefloor combo coming down perfectly throughout!
