❔
A really great session from Sonny Stitt – and one with a slightly different vibe than usual! That vibe comes from the work of two Latin percussionists – Marcelino Valdez on congas and Osvaldo Martinez on bongos – both of whom really a a lot to the groove next to the drums of Herbie Lovelle – a rich bottom end that's maybe more Afro-styled than conventional Latin jazz! The mighty Ronnie Mathews is on piano, Herbie Lovell plays bass, and Stitt blows tenor throughout – on great titles that include "Blue Blood Ritual", "Slave Maidens", "Island Shout", and "Barefoot Ball".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Yellow and black label New Jersey pressing, with Van Gelder stamp. Vinyl is nice and clean, but has a short click near the end of side one. Label has a tiny bit of marker, and back has a tiny bit of pen.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

My Mother's Eyes
Pacific Jazz, 1963. Very Good
A rare one for Sonny Stitt – an album for Pacific Jazz recorded on the west coast, but done with some hard-burning organ work by Charles Kynard that easily matches any of Stitt's best soul jazz sides from the east! Saxophone Colossus

Gene Ammons

Greatest Hits
Prestige, 1960s. Very Good+
While it's tough to think of a jazz player having "hits" – given the low sales of jazz albums, even in the 60s – it's still the case that Ammons' sound was so strong, and so soulful, he had plenty of fans in the crossover market for some of his bigger recordings. The album ... LP, Vinyl record album
