Jaco PastoriusJaco Pastorius (Bonus Tracks) ... CD
Epic (Japan), 1976. Used ... $18.99
This is the one that really nailed it for Jaco Pastorious – a brilliant showcase for all his many talents on the bass, and a key illustration of the way that he influenced an entire generation! Sure, Jaco in Weather Report was already pretty darn great – but here, on his own, he really gets to sparkle – jamming hard with heavyweights on some funky numbers, sliding out in spacey territory on mellow cuts, and even trying out a few more experimental moments that are far beyond what most other bassists might imagine for a debut of this nature. Players on the date include Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Don Alias on percussion, Lenny White on drums, Hubert Laws on flute, and Randy Brecker on trumpet – and titles include "Portrait Of Tracy", "Donna Lee", "Continuum", "Okonkole Y Trompa", "Kuru/Speak Like a Child", "Opus Pocus", and "Come On Come Over". CD

Jaco PastoriusTruth, Liberty & Soul – Live in NYC – The Complete 1982 NPR Jazz Alive ... CD
Resonance, 1981. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
A famous broadcast performance by this legendary bassist – but one that's presented here in a version that features 40 minutes of music that never aired on the original program! This well-recorded set captures Jaco Pastorius at his height – after a huge step forward in sound and style in the 70s – to a time when he was exploring so many new ideas, and new ways of expressing himself on the electric bass – an instrument that he completely transformed for generations to come! The group's a large one – Jaco's Word Of Mouth ensemble – with Bob Mintzer on tenor and soprano sax, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Peter Erskine on drums, and Don Alias on percussion – plus Othello Molineaux on some mighty cool steel drums. There's a larger horn section, too – and Toots Theielmans plays a bit of guest harmonica – and most tracks are nice and long. Titles include "Okonkole Y Trompa", "Three Views Of A Secret", "Invitation", "Soul Intro/The Chicken", "Twins", "Bass & Drum Improvisation", "Reza/Giant Steps", and "Mr Fonebone". CD

Jaco Pastorius & Rashied AliBlackbird ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99 About July 3, 2024
One of the most unique albums ever recorded by the legendary bassist Jaco Pastorious – and one of the most outside as well! The set features duets recorded with drummer Rashied Ali for French Radio in 1984 – and as with John Coltrane, Ali is something of a muse here with Pastorius – really setting him free into more improvised, outside territory – nicely unbound, although still very much in command of those talents and touches that made Jaco such an influential musician during the short time he was on the planet! Ali comes on full at times, punctuates the proceedings at others – and Jaco moves between round notes and more abstract elements – sometimes even upping the fuzz in a really great way. Titles include "Broadway Blues", "Slang", "Fannie Mae", "Purple Haze", "Continuum", and a version of "Naima". CD

✨✧ Jaco Pastorius/Pat Metheny/Bruce Ditmas/Paul BleyLive In New York City – 16th June 1974 (aka Jaco) ... LP
Improvising Artists Inc/B 13, 1974. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great and hard to find side, with bass whiz Jaco meeting up with Pat Metheny, Bruce Ditmas and Paul Bley. Bley plays electric piano, so his tones match with the electric guitar and bass, and the set bristles with energy, and casts all the players in a different light than the work they became most well known for. Jaco is definitely flexing his chops, but there's still a sense of restraint that lacks a bit in some of his later recordings, and the tunes by Bley, Carla Bley, and Annette Peacock cast both him and Metheny into a freer sounding realm than you typically hear them. 9 tracks in all, though a number of the songs on side two are very short. Includes "Vashkar", "Vampira", "Overtoned", "Batterie" and "Blood". LP, Vinyl record album
(Clear vinyl pressing, still sealed with printed PVC sleeve.)

A late session from Jaco Pastorius – one that features the famous bassist at the helm of his Word Of Mouth big band, recorded live in Tokyo with a very full and funky sound! Players in the group include Bob Mintzer on saxes, Don Alias on percussion, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Peter Erskine on drums, and Toots Thielemans on harmonica – plus an array of brass and woodwind players who expand the core sound tremendously. The overall style is more in a funky fusion mode than some of Jaco's other albums – and titles include "The Chicken", "Liberty City", "Invitation", "Soul Intro", "Reza", and "Fannie Mae". CD

✨✧ Jamaaladeen TacumaRenaissance Man ... CD
Gramavision, 1984. Used ... $9.99
A record that really lives up to its title – as it has bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma really stepping past usual roles for his instrument – into that range of new sounds and styles that was exploding in the bass world after the initial impact of Jaco Pastorius! The instrument's as much a force of rhythm as it is of lead here – and is often set up in these electro funk backings by Tacuma's Jamaal combo, with guest work from Olu Dara – but also shifts a bit on other tracks to include performances by Ornette Coleman on alto, David Murray on tenor, Vernon Reid on guitar, and Daniel Ponce on percussion. Overall, the styles work nicely, without some of the heaviness of some of Tacuma's later records – and titles include "Flash Back", "Dancing In Your Head", "The Battle Of Images", "Sparkle", "The Next Stop", "Renaissance Man", and "Let's Have A Good Time". CD

✨✧ Weather ReportBlack Market ... CD
Columbia, 1976. Used ... $4.99
A new chapter in the sound of Weather Report – but one that's still equally classic! Founding members Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul are joined here by Jaco Pastorius on bass, Chester Thompson on drums, and Alejandro Acuna on percussion – and Pastorius especially helps bring a lot of new colors and energy to the group! The style is still somewhere in the space of years past – somewhat cosmic at times, but also well-suited to leaner, flowing grooves that stretch out warmly – making great use especially of Zawinul's keyboards. Added players include Alphonso Johnson on bass and Don Alias on drums – and titles include "Black Market", "Cannon Ball", "Three Clowns", "Barbary Coast", "Herandnu", "Elegant People", and "Gibraltar". ✨✧ Weather ReportHeavy Weather ... CD
CBS, 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the biggest hits ever for Weather Report – thanks to Joe Zawinul's leadoff track "Birdland" – one of those tunes that entered the canon immediately, and saw countless covers pop up over the years – kind of a rare thing for a jazz tune at this point in time! The track's driving, building energy shows a newly focused side to Weather Report – one that's traded some of the spacier, more experimental moments of the past for a dynamic energy that still puts them ahead of most other 70s fusion supergroups. The presence of Jaco Pastorius is felt quite strongly here – especially on the way the colors ebb and flow up from the bottom – and the way that Jaco's using his bass with the energy of a solo jazz guitar! Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena are on percussion, and Wayne Shorter's reeds still crackle with a nice degree of soul – on titles that include "Harlequin", "Rumba Mama", "A Remark You Made", "Teen Town", "Palladium", "Havona", and "The Juggler". ✨✧ Jimmy CliffCliff Hanger ... LP
Columbia, 1985. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Mid 80s record from the great Jimmy Cliff. While he was in his prime in the early 70s, this much later commercial effort shows he's still got the skills to pay the bills, and we actually kind of like the sound of him singing over the glossy crossover-attempt tracks, which have that great 80s Sly Dunbar-playing-the-Simmons-drum sound in the rhythm tracks. The rest of the band is an all star cast, with the Kool & the Gang horn section & even a cameo from Jaco Pastorius, plus Jamaican stalwarts Ansel Collins, Ranchie McLean & Earl Chinna Smith. Includes "Hot Shot", "Brown Eyes", "Reggae Street" & "Nuclear War". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Weather Report8:30 ... CD
CBS, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
Weather Report at the height of their 70s fame – captured live in a double-length set, very much the practice for jazz superstars of the time! The format is familiar – but the liveness gives the album a slightly different feel than their studio sets – a sound that echoes out strongly along with thunderous applause from the crowds, who are themselves clearly situated in some very large arenas. And while the studio Weather Report albums are easily documents of the group's power themselves, it's something extra to hear the crowd going nuts for them here – cheering on Jaco Pastorius during a frenetic bass solo, roaring with approval at a Joe Zawinul keyboard bit, or clapping with enthusiasm after Wayne Shorter finishes a snakey solo. Tracks are all longish, and titles include "Black Market", "Birdland", "Thanks For The Memory", "8:30", "Brown Street", "In A Silent Way", and "Slang". Due to the length of the CD, the track "Scarlet Woman" has been omitted. CD
