Musical Menu

LP (Item 7766) Cadet, 1969 — Condition: Very Good
Gatefold
Originally: 9.99
One of The Dells' best albums from this period – and a real Cadet studios masterpiece, thanks to some incredibly groovy arrangements by Charles Stepney! The sound's a bit like some of the Rotary Connection albums put together under Stepney's supervision – but given that the group is the Dells, the vocals are much much better, with a much stronger soul component – and fused with some incredible musical arrangements! The whole thing's wonderful – and graced by an incredible gatefold cover that has pictures of miniaturized Dells members being served with eggs and bacon as part of a "musical menu"! Tracks include "Believe Me", "Always Together", "Hallways of My Mind", and the trippy "Agatha Van Thurgood".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original blue fade label stereo pressing. Cover has a small cutout hole, split top seam, edge wear, light ring wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Soulful Strings

Paint It Black
Cadet, 1966. Very Good
One of the better albums by this great Chicago soul studio group – but all of them are pretty nice! The great Richard Evans is still at the head of The Strings, and the album features solo work by Charles Stepney and Lennie Druss, in a cool breezy Chess/Cadet soul jazz kind of mode. The ... More More More
Buddah, 1976. Sealed
The adult film star who became a chart act – and thanks to some very skillful help from Gregg Diamond, who wrote, produced, and arranged the whole record, the title cut "More, More, More" went onto become a huge dancefloor classic. The album features a 6 minute version of the cut ... LP, Vinyl record album

War & Eric Burdon

Eric Burdon Declares War
MGM, 1970. Near Mint-
War became so popular on their own in later years that it's easy to forget how they first sprung onto the soul charts – here, in an album of many styles that was put together by the wayward Eric Burdon after the dissolution of The Animals. We have to admit that Burdon was a genius to hook ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stuff

Stuff
Just Sunshine/Warner, 1976. Near Mint-
Tight funky fusion from Stuff – the stellar debut by the soul jazz supergroup – filled with groovy electric keys, rubbery basslines and tightly vamping guitar! The sound is warm and groovy throughout – sophisticated funk on some tunes, and slightly looser and soulful on others ... LP, Vinyl record album
Warner, 1995. Near Mint- 2LP
A great return to form for Prince – even though at the time, we all had to refer to him with an unpronounceable symbol! There's a lean, funky vibe to most of the record – almost a step back to the unified group approach of his mid 80s classics – and even though a few sonic ... LP, Vinyl record album
Numero, Late 1970s. Near Mint-
Brilliant early sounds from Jimmy Jam – rare late 70s material that has a very different sound than his slicker 80s work with Terry Lewis! The style here is a wonderful blend of sweet soul and righteous jazzy funk – a lot warmer than Jimmy's later beat-heavy style – and served up ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cheryl Lynn

Start Over
Manhattan, 1987. Near Mint-
Cheryl Lynn's definitely starting over here – moving over to the Manhattan label after a long successful run on Columbia – but her sound on the record is still pretty strongly in the same mode, a blend of 80s soul with poppier hooks, done with a fair bit of keyboards and drum machine ... Peabo Bryson

All My Love
Capitol, 1989. Sealed
Peabo Bryson was long into his career by the time this set came out at the end of the 80s – but the album also seemed to mark a bit of a rebirth for the singer, too – maybe one of his strongest in years, and a masterful showcase for his amazing vocals! Maybe part of the album's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Hancock

Fat Albert Rotunda
Warner, 1969. Sealed
A crucial record in the career of keyboard legend Herbie Hancock – the first session in which he really gets all-out funky, but in a way that's different than his spacier jams to come in the 70s! At some level, the album links the early soul jazz modes of Herbie's first few Blue Note ... LP, Vinyl record album

Trumpeter Louis Smith made only two records for Blue Note, but both of them are great! This set's arguably his most famous – because of a rare uncredited appearance by Cannonball Adderley, working here under the "nom de date" of "Buckshot La Funke" – and blowing ... LP, Vinyl record album
