DellsAnthology – Dells Collection (1955-1992) ... CD
Hip-O, Mid 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 14.99
A whopping collection of the Dells' classic work – featuring tunes pulled from their years at Vee Jay, Chess, Chi-Sound, and Mercury! The package starts way back in the 50s, and traces the group through their groundbreaking 60s soul sides, their sublime baroque 70s numbers, and their later smooth modern tracks – and as you listen to this stuff, you'll be stunned to hear how great the group remained through all of that time! The early tracks are straight doo wop, with simple production; later work has the great Charles Stepney crafting some majestic Cadet/Concept arrangements; and even the modern stuff has a well-constructed smooth groove. Through it all, though, the real strength is the group's vocals – still wonderful even in the album's one more recent number, "A Heart Is A House For Love". Titles include "I Can Sing A Rainbow/Love Is Blue", "Always Together", "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation", "I Miss You", "Slow Motion", "We Got To Get Our Thing Together", "The Glory Ove Love", "Long Lonely Nights", "Dreams Of Contentment", "The Bossa Nova Bird", "Oh What A Night" (in 2 versions), "Stay In My Corner (in 3 versions)", and "Does Anybody Know I'm Here". ✨✧ DellsDells Sing Dionne Warwick's Greatest Hits ... CD
Cadet/Dusty Groove, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Forget Dionne Warwick, and think Burt Bacharach – because on this sublime little set, The Dells are singing some of Burt's greatest tunes ever – all set to impeccable arrangements by the legendary Charles Stepney! The album's more wonderful than you might even expect – a true high point in the career of all parties involved – and a tremendous recasting of Bacharach's original brilliance – taking his key compositions into the most sophisticated styles of the Chicago soul scene in the 70s! There's a sense of timing and phrasing here that's quite unique – hardly simple covers of Dionne Warwick's approach to these hits – and Stepney's backings feature his own Fender Rhodes, guitar from Phil Upchurch, percussion from members of The Pharoahs, and some fuller horns, harp, and strings. The Dells are equally great too – and serve up some of the best vocals of their career – really magnificent harmonies, and soaring solo parts that seem to even go beyond their best-known hits. Titles include "Walk On By", "Trains & Boats & Planes", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Wives & Lovers", "Close To You", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", "This Guy's In Love With You", "Raindrops Keep Fallin On My Head", and "A House Is Not A Home". Funky! "I Want My Momma" is an excellent little psychedelic soul cut – with hard drums at the beginning, echoey production, and some nice fuzzed-out guitars! Charles Stepney arranged, and the track's got stunning Cadet sound to it! "Always Together" is more standard, but features incredible harmonies from the band, who are in tip-top-tip shape at this point! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ DellsFace To Face ... LP
ABC, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A later effort from the Dells, cut around the time ABC was having some great luck with the Detroit soul of The Dramatics – and also recorded in Detroit, with production work by the likes of Al Perkins, Rudy Robinson, and Calvin Carter, the Dells' old boss at Vee Jay. The tunes have a smoother approach than the group's work at Chess/Cadet – but their vocals are still top notch, with that raspy soul quality that has made them sound consistently strong over the years, no matter what the setting. Includes "Face To Face", "Thought I Could", "Face To Face", "Hooked On Loving You", "Love Me", "Wrapped Up Tight", and "Changed Man". Lots of nice ballads! LP, Vinyl record album

Cadet, 1971. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A stunning set from the mighty mighty Dells – a cool collaboration with the legendary arranger Charles Stepney and songwriter Terry Callier – and a record that shows just how far the group had come since their streetcorner harmony days! The vocals are incredible – that rich blend of deep notes and soaring highs that made The Dells one of the most technically amazing soul groups in the 70s – and Stepney's arrangements follow in the same mode as his work for their Dionne Warwick album, and his music for Minnie Riperton and Ramsey Lewis – with lots of groovy currents on the bottom and soaring strings on the top – sophisticated, but completely soulful too – at a level that nobody else can touch! Terry Callier wrote the original tunes "The Love We Had Stays On My Mind", "Freedom Means", "Melody Man", "Free & Easy", "Rather Be With You", and "It's All Up To You" – and the set also includes great remakes of "One Less Bell To Answer", "Make It With You", and "If You Go Away/Love Story". ✨✧ DellsGive Your Baby A Standing Ovation ... LP
Cadet, 1973. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Pure genius from The Dells – one of the few older vocal groups who could really change and evolve their sound – not by losing anything from their roots, and instead getting better and better with each new release! This set's a perfect example of why The Dells were the pinnacle of sophisticated group soul at the start of the 70s – as they still have all the dynamics of their roots, with a tremendous blend of individual voices and range – but they also work with very hip arrangements and production, courtesy of the amazing Charles Stepney – who allows them to sound funky, righteous, and completely sublime! The mix of message and meaning is wonderful throughout – the record's as much a mature statement of pride as the best coming from Philly International at the time – and titles include "Ain't No Sunshine", "Closer", "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation", "Stand Up And Show The World", "Soul Strollin", "Glory Of Love", and "Love Can Make It Easier". A very cool 2LP, Japanese-only pressing of Musical Menu – one that features lots of bonus material, and a different set list than the original album! There's lots of great arrangements here from Charles Stepney, who makes the whole thing a real Cadet studios masterpiece! The sound's a bit like some of the Rotary Connection albums put together under Stepney's supervision – but given that the group is the Dells, the vocals are much much better, with a much stronger soul component – and fused with some incredible musical arrangements! Titles include "If You Don't Move I'll Fall", "You Don't Care", "Stand Up & Show The World", "Always Together", "Hallways Of My Mind", "Does Anybody Know I'm Here", "Don't Make Me A Storyteller", "I Hear Voices", "I Wish It Was Me You Loved", "Strung Out Over You", "I Miss You", "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation", and "Good Bye Mary Anne". Mercury, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A big move to Mercury for the Dells, after a pretty successful run at Cadet in the late 60s and early 70s – but the group's still in fine form vocal-wise, and on many of these they're still working with the great Don Davis, who gave the band a strong 70s soul groove, similar to his work with The Dramatics. Charles Stepney produced the great "Love Is Missing From Our Lives", which features guest work by The Dramatics, and a great sound that's very much in the classic 70s group tradition. Other nice cuts include "Overnight", "We Got To Get Our Thing Together", "Thank God You're My Lady", and a version of Terry Callier's "You Don't Care". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ DellsBest Of The Vee-Jay Years ... CD
Vee Jay/Shout Factory, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Incredible early material from The Dells – initial sides done for Vee Jay Records, most of which are in a very hard-hitting doo wop mode! The Dells were one of the key forces in the Chicago group soul scene of the late 50s, and hearing these tracks it's easy to tell why – because there's a raw depth, sincerity, and sense of humanity here that's amazing – a bold sound in the pre-soul years, voiced by one of the few groups who effortlessly made the transition to the genre as the 60s moved in. The package not only includes a huge number of early Dells singles for Vee Jay from the late 50s, but also features most of their obscure mid 60s album for the label – a surprising return that's done in the more-soul mode of the group's Cadet recordings, as well as a few key touches of jazz! CD features 17 tracks in all – with titles that include "Tell The World", "Dreams Of Contentment", "Oh What A Night", "Zing Zing Zing", "I Wanna Go Home", "Movin On", "Baby Open Up Your Heart", "Dry Your Eyes", "Stay In My Corner", and "Lil Darlin". Marlena ShawSpice Of Life (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Cadet/Universal (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
An amazing batch of sophisticated soul tracks – and a favorite with the righteous groove scene! On the surface, the record's a combination of jazz and soul tracks in the same mode that you'd find on some of Nancy Wilson's albums for Capitol during the same time – but digging deeper, you'll find an undercurrent of politics, feminism, and social commentary delivered with surprising intensity. Marlena Shaw's voice is generally sweet, but she's set up in some extremely powerful arrangements by Richard Evans and Charles Stepney that recast even the simplest phrase into a whole new setting of strength and pride – and Bobby Miller of Dells fame also helped make the record what it is, and helped write some of the best songs on the record. The set includes Marlena's classic original reading of "Woman Of The Ghetto", which has been sampled by just about everyone, plus "California Soul", which has a nice hard break, and the tunes "Liberation Conversation", "Where Can I Go?", and the original version of "Go Away Little Boy" – as sweet a statement of womanhood if there ever was one! Mercury, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A pretty groovy little album from Dinah Washington – at first glance a set of older standards, but at second glance a date that features some wonderfully swinging arrangements from Quincy Jones! The Q really helps Dinah break from the usual mode here – providing here with an upbeat, tightly snapping sort of groove – that sweetly syncopated Quincy Jones sound that really helped some singers hit new heights in the 60s. And as an added delight, The Dells make a key appearance on a few tracks – singing in a harmony group style that's similar to their one album on Vee Jay – almost more in Four Freshmen modes, but in a really great way! Titles include "Am I Blue", "Tears & Laughter", "If I Should Lose You", "I Just Found Out About Love", "Wake The Town & Tell The People", and "Wee Small Hours". LP, Vinyl record album

Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A massive tribute to the genius of soul in the Windy City – a wonderful compilation that really gets at the special sound Chicago brought into play during the early years of soul! The set is filled with key cuts from the Chi-town scene of the time – some of them lesser-known that the famous hits always associated with our hometown – and beautifully selected to really capture a moment when soul music was first starting to come together as a style! You can definitely hear roots from Chicago blues, gospel, and R&B in the cuts – but they're definitely all soul, all the way through – a killer batch of nuggets that manages to offer up fresh bits from some big names, and uncover some great cuts by some less familiar folks. The package features full track-by-track notes on the tunes by Bill Dahl – and titles include "Tragic" by The Sheppards, "At The Party "by Wade Flemons, "Hi Diddley Dee Dum Dum" By The Dells, "Tell Him" by The Drew-Vels, "I've Got A Girl" by Major Lance, "Senorita I Love You" by The Impressions, "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" by Don & Bob, "My Heart Cries" by Etta & Harvey, "Isle Of Sirens" by Jerry Butler, "Enchanted Garden" by The Accents, "You've Got A Great Love" by The Chanteurs, "Father Knows Best" by The Radiants, "Let Em Try" by Rosco Gordon, "Behind The Curtains" by Jan Bradley, and "Puppy Love" by Barbara Lewis. ✨✧ Detroit EmeraldsI Think Of You – The Westbound Singles 1969 to 1975 ... CD
Westbound (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the great groups of the Detroit soul scene at the end of the 60s – but an act who never got the full fame of contemporaries like The Four Tops or Temptations! That didn't stop the Detroit Emeralds from being a hell of a vocal act, though – as they've got a mixture of tight harmonies and raw soul that's completely wonderful – and which finally gets full exposure here in a well-done selection of all their singles for the Westbound label! The imprint might be best known as the home for trippy soul by Funkadelic and Ohio Players – yet during the same classic stretch, Westbound also handled this hip Detroit trio to perfection – taking their 60s-schooled harmonies, and giving them a more sophisticated spin for the 70s – really letting the vocals take off as the group demonstrates their Dells-like power, and moving the arrangements of the tunes past overdone Motown styles of the decade before. The result is some of the hippest harmony soul you'll ever hope to hear – all presented here with the wonderfully deep Ace/Kent Records presentation – with 23 tracks that include "If I Lose Your Love", "Things Are Looking Up", "Lee", "Wear This Ring With Love", "Feel The Need In Me", "Whatcha Gonna Wear Tomorrow", "I Think Of You", "Rosetta Stone", "Set It Out", "Til You Decide To Come Home", "I'll Never Sail The Sea Again", "There's Love For Me Somewhere", "You're Gettin A Little Too Smart", and their classic "Baby Let Me Take You In My Arms". The approach really takes the group up to the next level – with fantastic vocals from Ron Banks and LJ Reynolds, and superbly sophisticated sounds from the Detroit Groovesville crew. ✨✧ Jimmy James & The VagabondsNew Religion/London Swings/This Is Jimmy James & The Vagabonds/Open Up Your Soul (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Pye/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Four classic albums from this hip British soul group – issued here in a single set, with bonus tracks too! First up is New Religion – a record that was also released in America by Atlantic Records. Although they were a UK soul act, Jimmy James and The Vagabonds were a perfect match for the Atlantic soul stable of the 60s. The group had a smooth group style that was partly uptown, partly northern soul – as clearly illustrated in this album, which is divided up into a "mood red: you feel like leaping" side, and a "mood blue: you feel like digging deeper" side. The band chose some good material that really helps them maintain a solid socking soul sound – including "The Entertainer" and "Ain't Love Good, Ain't Love Proud" by Tony Clarke, "Ain't No Big Thing" and "I'm Just A Fool For You Girl" by Gerald Sims, and "Little Boy Blue" and "People Get Ready" by Curtis Mayfield. Also features "Come To Me Softly", a sweet dreamy ballad by Jimmy, and kind of a bit crossover hit for the boys. London Swings is two-sided monster – as the album was originally split with work from the Alan Bown Set too! Here, the CD features just the live material from the soul group – a smoking performance from Jimmy James & The Vagabonds – one that goes way past the sweetness of their hits, and which has a crowd-pleasing, party-hearty approach to soul that's really great! Jimmy and the group serve up versions of "Sock It To Em JB", "That Driving Beat", "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", "You Don't Know Like I Know", and "Don't Know What I'm Gonna Do". This Is Jimmy James & The Vagabonds is a record that featured some crossover tracks with New Religion – but the set here just features the exclusive cuts – including "I Feel Alright", "I Can't Get Back Home To My Baby", "Never Like This Before", "I Don't Wanna Cry", and "You Showed Me The Way". Open Up Your Soul is a record with a really wonderful sound – the deeply soulful vocals of Jimmy James & The Vagabonds, mixed with rich arrangements handled by Nicky Welsh, and produced to perfection by Brit maestro John Schroeder! The record's got the sophistication of some of the Richard Evans productions over at Chess/Cadet at the same time – and, no surprise, the group lead off with a great cover of The Dells "Wear It On Our Face" – then roll into cuts that include "Cry Like A Baby", "Good Day Sunshine", "Four Walls", "Everybody Loves A Winner", "If You're Gonna Love Me", and "Open Up Your Soul". CD also features 7 more bonus tracks from singles – including "Why", "Bumper To Bumper", "Close The Door", "Give Us A Light", "I Wanna Be your Everything", "Hungry For Love", and "Don't Know What I'm Gonna Do". Chess/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really great look at a special side of the Chess Records soul catalog of the 60s – tracks that were very big on Chicago airwaves in the label's home town, yet which hardly got much play at all in the rest of the country! The collection's put together by Robert Pruter – the man who (literally) wrote the book on Chicago soul – and it's a wonderful portrait of soul in the Windy City of the 60s, with strands of music that nicely differ from the overplayed hits in later years. The collection also stands as a super-strong tribute to the never-ending genius of Chess Records – a label that never seems to let us down whenever we uncover a soul single we've never heard before! Titles include "Shy Guy" by The Radiants, "No Faith No Love" by Mitty Collier, "I Can't Help Myself" by The Gems, "Love Is A 5 Letter Word" by James Phelps, "A Thousand Miles Away" by Jo Ann Garrett, "Selfish One" by Jackie Ross, "Strange Feeling" by Billy Stewart, "The Creeper" by Freddy Robinson, "Peak Of Love" by Bobby McClure, "Lonely Girl" by Andrea Davis, "This Heart Of Mine" by Tony Clarke, "Bossa Nova Bird" by The Dells, and "Only Time Will Tell" by Etta James. ✨✧ Terry CallierOccasional Rain ... CD
Cadet/MCA (UK), 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
Terry Callier's first album for Cadet – and the kickoff of one of the greatest three album runs that any soul artist ever recorded! This one's got a different feel than the later two, as it takes songs by Terry, and structures them with these little musical "segue" tracks in between every song, done in a sparer folksy style that recalls Terry's roots in the Old Town scene in Chicago. At the time, Terry was making the transition from folk artist to soul singer – and he'd been picked up by Jerry Butler and The Dells as a promising young songwriter, one of the best talents of the second generation of Chicago soul stars. The record's a stripped-down affair that features a small group with Charles Stepney on harpsichord and organ, Callier on guitar, and backing vocals by Minnie Riperton, Shirley Wahls, and Kitty Haywood. The album kicks off with Terry's great little pop ditty "Ordinary Joe" – probably the catchiest song he ever wrote – then rolls into more somber titles like "Occasional Rain", "Do You Finally Need A Friend", "Golden Circle", and "Blues For Marcus". A totally unique album – and a prime example of the genius that was coming out of Chicago at the time! CD

✨✧ Dinah WashingtonTears & Laughter ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock

The title's no lie – as this sweet little set features 101 Northern Soul classics – a treasure trove of upbeat soul from the 60s – with lots of rare cuts, obscure groovers, and the kinds of tracks that always got more play on UK dancefloors than back home here in the US! Ace (UK), Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Incredible sounds from the Chess Records catalog – not the blues that you might know the label for, but a huge range of funk, soul, and jazz tracks from the headiest years of the 60s and 70s – a time when the Chicago scene was really turning out some incredible musical hybrids! As you'd guess from the title, all the cuts here have had a new life in recent years – thanks to samples by hip hop artists or other producers – but the original grooves are even better than the tracks that used them, and come together here to make one of the most mindblowing collections of Chess material we've ever heard! The package is nicely heavy on sounds from the Cadet/Concept years of the label – with more than a few contributions from producers Charles Stepney and Richard Evans – and the package features 42 wonderful tracks – including "Fonky Thang Diamon Ring" by The Dells, "Windmills Of Your Mind" by Dorothy Ashby, "I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun" by Rotary Connection, "Jelly Jam" by Jack McDuff, "The Getaway" by Alvin Cash, "In My Body's House" by Gene Chandler, "Cross Country" by Archie Whitewater, "Memory Band" by Rotary Connection, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by Jimmy Ponder, "Inside Out" by American Gypsy, "Go Go Power" by Sugar Pie DeSanto, "Shake It Up" by The Vibrations, "Up Above The Rock" by Ray Bryant, "Bad Moon Rising" by Bo Diddley, "Shoo Be Doo Be Doo Be Do Da Day" by Eddie Fisher, "Humpin Bumpin & Thumpin" by Andre Williams, "Who Got The Number" by Pigmeat Markham, "Walk On By" by Jo Ann Garrett, "Chocolate Candy" by Soulful Strings, "Got To Get Your Own (7" version)" by Reuben Wilson, "Hanky's Panky (7" version)" by Shirley Scott, "Liberation Conversation" by Marlena Shaw, "Look Of Love" by Monk Higgins, and "Think About It" by Odell Brown & The Organizers. One of the Dramatics' best albums, and a real masterpiece of 70's group soul! The approach really takes the group up to the next level – with fantastic vocals from Ron Banks and LJ Reynolds, and superbly sophisticated sounds from the Detroit Groovesville crew. ✨✧ David RuffinDavid Ruffin ... LP
Motown, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A self-titled set from Motown giant David Ruffin – and a record that pairs him with producer Bobby Miller, who'd worked some real late 60s magic with The Dells! As with that group, Miller has a wonderful way of letting the rough lead vocals come right to the front of the mix – while still serving up a batch of backings with a lot of power and focus – and a sense of complexity that comes through in both Miller's original tunes for the date, and the following arrangements from David Van DePitte. This unified approach gives the record even more focus than other Ruffin albums of the period – and the whole thing stands not just as a lasting tribute to his talents, but also to the way that Motown was getting better and better at recording full albums over singles. Titles include "Common Man", "I Miss You", "A Little More Trust", "Go On With Your Bad Self", and "Day In the Life of the Working Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Roulette/Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 6CD ... $31.99 38.99
A huge amount of material from Tommy James & The Shondells – a group that most people know for a string of jingle-jangle gems in the 60s, but who kept on making some really wonderful music over the course of the 11 albums included in this set! The group at the start were already pretty darn amazing – able to create the kind of catchy, groovy tunes that really exploded out of AM radio in the mid 60s – but as the years went on, Tommy moved into headier territory, and started to stretch out from the pop psych sound of "Crimson & Clover" – one of his last great hits, but also the gateway to all the wonderful music heard here in the second half of the set! The collection is a real ear-opener – and includes lots of music that hasn't been on CD in any form for years (or vinyl for that matter too!) – plus bonus tracks on most of the records, and other rare material – all bundled up with a heavy booklet of notes. 140 tracks in all – and the albums Hanky Panky, It's Only Love, I Think We're Alone Now, Gettin Together, Mony Mony, Crimson & Clover, Cellophane Symphony, Travelin, Tommy James, Christian Of The World, My Head My Bed & My Red Guitar – and bonus tracks and singles too! A sublime pop psych classic from Tommy James & The Shondells – a record that's quite different than some of the janglier work the group was issuing a few years before – and a perfect example of the way that just a few slight studio tricks can really transform a record! The tunes are all short and focused, but produced with lots of cool reverb, echo, and fuzzy touches on the sides – never overindulgent, and still plenty tuneful – but with so many weird little edges that they come through with a sound that's still pretty darn fresh after all these years – even if you think you know these guys from their hits. Tower, 1966. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A searing second chapter in The Standells' amazing run of records for the Tower label in the 60s – music that's completely on fire right from the start – and head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries on the LA scene! The group have this stark, cold look on the front – almost punk rock in presentation, which is a good nod at the sound of the music – much grittier than some of the pop-psyche or polished garage that was coming into the charts – filled with sharp edges at every twist and turn, and impeccably produced, but never in a commercial way! The group contribute some great originals, but also have no trouble picking up songs from other sources – and like early work by Love, they make these other tunes completely their own – weaving them into the sonic blast that was their sublime calling card at the time. Titles include "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White", "Black Hearted Woman", "Why Pick On Me", "Paint It Black", "My Little Red Book", "Mainline", and "Have You Ever Spent The Night In Jail". Fantastic freaky sounds from The Standells – a group who perfectly bridge the garage and psych worlds with their music, and who still sound years ahead of their time – even after the passage of decades! Sure, lots of other folks traveled in this territory in the 60s – but few folks could mix their modes together so well – garagey guitars, bluesy undercurrents, heavy fuzz, and this sneering kind of energy that was punk rock way before anyone even thought of coining that term! The set's probably best known for the group's massive hit "Dirty Water" – but the whole thing's wonderful, and is a jam-packed record of excitement from start to finish – with cuts that include "19th Nervous Breakdown", "Little Sally Tease", "Rari", "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White", and "Medication". Elektra/Rhino, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $36.99 39.99
One of those few classic cases where a compilation of tracks was maybe even more influential than the original music itself – as this early 70s collection of 60s material turned out to shape and influence generations for decades to come! Guitar genius Lenny Kaye put the set together famously for Elektra Records in 1972 – as a reminder that, just a few years before, there were some amazing sounds that were not only brewing up in local indie scenes around the country, but also on the radio as well – even though most of those groups had been pushed into relative obscurity by the rise of soft rock, hard rock, and classic rock of the early 70s! The package is a return to the pre-prog years, with an especially strong ear for garage-tuned tracks that would go on to shape later punk, 80s indie, and lots more underground sounds in the future. Titles include "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)" by Electric Prunes, "Dirty Water" by the Standells, "Respect" by Vagrants, "No Time Like The Right Time" by Blues Project, "Invitation To Cry" by Magicians, "You're Gonna Miss Me" by Thirteenth Floor Elevators, "Psychotic Reaction" by Count Five, "Baby Please Don't Go" by Amboy Dukes, "My World Fell Down" by Sagittarius, "Open My Eyes" by Nazz, "It's A Happening" by The Magic Mushrooms, "Lies" by The Knickerbockers, "Oh Yeah" by Shadows Of Knight, "Sit Down I Think I Love You" by The Mojo Men, "Just Like Romeo & Juliet" by Michael & The Messengers, "Hey Joe" by The Leaves, and "Farmer John" by The Premiers. Strawberry (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Raw work from the American underground of the 60s – material that predates punk by more than a decade, but which really sets the scene for the kind of searing, sneering attitude that really burst forth at the end of the 70s! The work is from a variety of scenes, although is especially heavy on the west coast – tracks recorded as a great antidote to more polished pop of the time, especially the sort that was trying to pass itself off as rock, but which was really a much more watered-down vibe. The "garage" in the title doesn't really do the music justice – as many of these acts are great musicians, given a key opportunity to really showcase their sound – and some of these tracks were surprising hits, although many others are under-discovered gems. The set is put together in the best style of the Strawberry label – a nice box, and plenty of notes on the tracks within – a whopping 94 titles in all, with work from The Unusuals, Dimensions, Shadows Of Knight, We The People, The Standells, Rationals, Other Half, Rangers, Strangeloves, Barbarians, Castaways, Remains, McCoys, Mad Hatters, Love, Mojo Men, Rocky & The Riddlers, Chris Morgan & The Togas, Limey & The Hanks, Echoes Of Carnaby Street, Don & The Goodtimers, Bobby Fuller Four, Seeds, Merrell & The Exiles, New Yorkers, Bedlam Four, Jackals, and dozens of others. ✨✧ VariousNuggets – Original Artyfacts FromThe First Psychedelic Era 1965 to 1968 (Sire pressing) ... LP
Sire, 1960s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ VariousWindy City Doo Wop To Soul – 29 Unissued Vocal Group Classics From The 50s & 60s ... CD
Buried Treasure, Late 50s/1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The title says it all – as the set's a collection of rare group soul recordings from Chicago, either unreleased recordings by obscure groups, or a few alternate takes of more famous numbers (but we use that term loosely here, as the cuts are all pretty darn rare!) Obviously, the fidelity's not in the 24-bit remaster mode – since lots of these come from rare tapes or acetates – but the set's a wonderful treasure if you're into harmony soul, especially of the Chicago sort! Titles include "Dear Lord" by The Vondells, "I Love That Guy" by The Shel-Raes, "Too Late" by Henry Ford & The Gifts, "Meet Me Halway" by The Condors, "Can't Take It" by The Sheppards, "Everyday Of The Week" by The Springers, "You Ain't Right" by The Nobles, "Darling Don't" by The Medallionaires, "Mtyllt" by The Dream Kings, "Restless Nights" by The Uniques, and "Boy Meets Girl" by The Delprados. ✨✧ VariousCicadelic 60s Vol 7 – From Texas To Tucson ... CD
Collectables, Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A whole host of very groovy groups from the southwest scene in the 60s – very much the kind of material that the Cicadelic label does such a great job of digging up and releasing to the world! Some of the groups here were actually recorded in Nashville, which fits a bit with the sound – as there's definitely some echoes of earlier southwest sounds, from The Crickets to the guitar style of some of the bigger instrumental groups – but served up here by smaller, more obscure artists who only ever issued rare singles! There's 10 unreleased tracks on the set, and an interview with the Lewallen Brothers too – who served up a few tracks here, next to The Marsades, The Rocks, Shandells Inc, Shadows, and The Feathers. Wonderful stuff for late night listening – a mixture of harmony soul tracks and sweet vocal numbers by a mixture of male and female singers, all pretty wonderful, and all the kinds of tunes that you're not going to be turning up easily in the racks, even at Dusty Groove! Titles include "Peace Of Mind" by The Vontastics, "Just A Part Of Life" by The 5 Crowns, "I'll Always Love You" by The Festivals, "Sitting There That Night" by Darrow Fletcher, "It's You For Me" by the Amazers, "Lanore" by The Vondells, "Feel At Home Here" by Michelle Wiley, "Be Ever Wonderful" by Ted Taylor, "She's Gone" by Nolan Chance, and "Never Too Much Love" by The Impressions. Lots of rare Chicago gems, too! The fidelity is a bit crackly in parts, but no more so than a dusty old 45! CD

A great overview of classic soul music – done in the best style of this Cairo Records series from Mississippi – which means a fantastic choice of cuts, and a beautiful booklet of notes and photos to accompany the music! The set is almost worth the price of the book alone – full color, and filled with scans of rare albums and singles, discographical information, and other details on the music – all in support of a 36 track set that mixes familiar names with much more obscure artists – in order to present a really wide range of classic soul. Titles include "I Pledge" by Lonnie & Lloyd, "My Baby Waited Too Long" by Mamie Perry, "I Found You" by James Hamm, "I've Been Pushed Around" by Blue River & The Maroons, "Please Don't Desert Me Baby" by Gloria Walker, "Helping Hand" by Little Genie Brooks, "Where Is Love" by Eldridge Holmes, "I Still Love You" by Jean Stanback, "Should I Take You Home" by Aztlan, "Don't Make Me What You Don't Want Me To Be" by Nick Allen, "Sippin A Cup Of Coffee" by The Ordells, "Let Me Be The Man" by The Fabulous Vents, "I'm Too Far Gone To Turn Around" by Irene Reid, "I Can't Stop" by Kenny Wells, and "I Wonder If I Had Your Love" by Leroy Smith. ✨✧ VariousAction – The Songs Of Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer tribute to the 60s songcraft of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart – who are probably best-known as the songwriters behind many songs by The Monkees – but they're terrific performers in their own right, on top of penning tunes for the creme of the 60s crop! This set goes a long way towards demonstrating their range. It's got all great songs by legendary groups and singers – including veterans like Fats Domino and Chubby Checker – who were seeking fresh heat at the time – plus great stuff by Boyce & Hart themselves, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Dino, Desi & Billy, The Shangri-Las, The Ikettes, The Standells, The Honeybeats and more! Includes "Valleri" by The Monkees, I Can't Get Him Out Of My Mind" by Sandra Dee, "(He's Gonna Be) Fine Fine Fine" by The Ikettes, "She" by Del Shannon, "Lazy Elsie Molly" by Chubby Checker, "Too Many Teardrops" by Bobby Hart, "Be My Guest" by Fats Domino, "Beverly Jean" by Curtis Lee and more. 26 in all.
