Living Soul

LP (Item 7672) Prestige, 1966 — Condition: Very Good+
Tight trio material from the legendary Richard Groove Holmes – caught live at Count Basie's Nightclub in Harlem, working hard and heavy with a trio that features Gene Edwards on guitar and George Randall on drums! This live set is the kind of record that beautifully shows why Groove was so popular with live audiences in the 60s – because he can burn all night long, with no tricks, no gimmicks, just a straight-on soul jazz groove and some amazing work on the Hammond! Most cuts are pretty long – and there's some great groovers on here like Gerald Wilson's "Blues For Yna Yna", a cover of "Girl From Ipanema", Jimmy Heath's "Gemini", and Groove's own "Living Soul".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A crackling bit of hardbop from Sonny Rollins – and a session that has Sonny playing with the Max Roach/Clifford Brown group that included Bud Powell's brother Richie on piano! Mulligan/Baker
Prestige, 1950s/Mid 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
2LP set released in the 70's featuring work from both of these West Coast giants. The first half focuses on recordings of Gerry Mulligan working with a strong early group – Chet Baker on trumpet, Chico Hamilton on drums, and Carson Smith on bass – on 4 tracks recorded in San Francisco ... John Coltrane & Hank Mobley

Tenor Conclave
Prestige, 1956. Near Mint-
Tenors can't get any more conclaved than this – as the record brings together 4 players on the instrument in a great match from 2 of the best sides of 50s jazz! John Coltrane and Hank Mobley represent the more open, soulful side of the spectrum – and Al Cohn and Zoot Sims the tighter, ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Lush Life
Prestige, 1957/1958. Near Mint-
A beautiful little album from the young John Coltrane, and one that hides its strong sense of depth behind a familiar jazz standard used as a title! In some way, the record is almost experimental for the time – as side one features the tenor of Coltrane alongside just the bass of Earl May ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1957. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of those 70s two-fers where Prestige went back and decided dicing up all those sessions in the 50s and 60s didn't make as much sense as issuing them as the way they went down. As such, this set collects work from one long blowing session, which eventually saw the light of day as two separate ... LP, Vinyl record album

Two Tenors (second cover)
Prestige, Late 50s. Near Mint-
The team of Coltrane and Mobley seems like a strange pairing from the perspective of the history books – but at the time, the pair were two of the brightest new stars on the tenor, each with a sound and style that would make them huge, so it was no surprise that they were brought together for ... Prestige, 1954/1956. Very Good+
A strange mix of material – but some great work overall! Eric Dolphy

Here & There
Prestige, Early 60s. Near Mint-
A surprisingly nice little record – a set in which Prestige Records collected together a number of unissued Eric Dolphy tracks after his death – but still a strong full album – as the record features music that's even a bit more far-reaching than some of the studio albums on the ... All Night Long
Prestige, 1957. Near Mint-
Sublime late 50s hardbop – recorded in the best Prestige blowing session mode! The record has an incredibly open-ended feel – as you might probably guess from the track "All Night Long", which runs for all of side one, and gives all the players included plenty of room to work ... Chester Thompson

Powerhouse
Black Jazz, 1971. Near Mint-
One of the few solo albums ever cut by organist Chester Thompson – a player who's known to most as the keyboardist in Tower Of Power, but one who's also remembered by a select funky few for this killer record for the Black Jazz label! The album's a stripped-down quartet session – with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Live Evil
Columbia, 1971. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
