Chase The Clouds Away

LP (Item 733992) A&M, 1975 — Condition: Sealed
A great one from that period when Chuck Mangione was mixing his sublime flugelhorn sound with some well-crafted larger ideas – served up with a core combo that features Chuck on Fender Rhodes as well as his horn, plus Chip Jackson on bass, Joe LaBarbera on drums, and Gerry Niewood on soprano, tenor, and flutes! The great Esther Satterfield sings a bit, Kathy Moses guests on flute, and there's some nice larger arrangements at times.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed copy with vintage price code stickers.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Wes Montgomery

Day In The Life
CTI/A&M, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
Mindblowing! This is when Wes Montgomery really starts to get interesting to us – when he's working with a top-line arranger like Don Sebesky, crafting some incredibly compelling chords over lightly jazzy arrangements and soaring strings, in a whole new mode of expression that would go onto ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Fortune

Waves Of Dreams
A&M/Horizon, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
A really wonderful album by Sonny Fortune – recorded for a major label, sure, but with the soulful depth of some of his earlier work for the indies! Sonny's on alto, flute, and soprano sax – and also plays a bit of percussion and some slight mini moog – not too much, as the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wes Montgomery

Down Here On The Ground
CTI/A&M, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
Super-dope work from the great Wes Montgomery – set to excellent early CTI arrangements from Don Sebesky and Deodato! The groove is nice and airy – with Wes' guitar floating over the top, yet still present enough to ring out loud and clear on all the tightly plucked notes – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gato Barbieri

Caliente
A&M, 1976. Near Mint-
One of Gato Barbieri's later recordings – but don't hold that against it! The set's a smoother effort than most of Gato's earlier work, but it's also still pretty darn soulful – done in a way that allows plenty of space for his raspy reed work on tenor to flow over the top of larger ... LP, Vinyl record album

Neil Larsen

Jungle Fever
Horizon/A&M, 1978. Near Mint-
A standout set from keyboardist Neil Larsen – a record that crossed over big back in the 70s, and which still sounds pretty darn great in the 21st Century! Larsen's keys here are kind of a more mainstream take on territory Bob James was exploring a few years before – arguably hipper at ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pieces Of A Dream

The debut of a genius group that would forever transform the sound of electric jazz in the 80s – and a brilliant set that few others could match at the time! Herbie Hancock

Secrets
Columbia, 1976. Near Mint-
Soulful 70s work from Herbie Hancock – a record that tightens things up from the Headhunters and Sextant sessions, but which still retains a lot of their depth and charm! Players here including some previous partners – like Bennie Maupin on reeds and Paul Jackson on bass – plus ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thelonious Monk

Always Know
Columbia, Mid 60s/1979. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Nice 2LP set that brings together a large amount of material by Monk that was recorded during the 60s, but never issued at the time. Most of the material is live, and some of the tracks did come out previously in edited form – but this collection (like so many of the other great Columbia 70's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie Hubbard

Love Connection
Columbia, 1979. Near Mint-
A lost treasure from the overlooked late 70s jazz years at Columbia!
