Ahmad Jamal – The Ahmad Jamal Trio Volume IV

LP (Item 71830) Argo, 1958 — Condition: Very Good
Magical early work from Ahmad Jamal – a scintillating blend of piano, percussion, and bass – with a sound that was incredibly fresh at the time, and which still sounds pretty much so to our ears! The album crackles with imagination and rhythm – really hitting on all burners without burning itself out – and showing that even in these early days, Jamal's approach was one that could be as striking as it was mellow. Bass is by the incredible Israel Crosby, and drums are by Vernell Fournier – and tracks include "Taboo", "The Girl Next Door", "Should I", "Secret Love", and "Squatty Roo".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Argo, 1960. Very Good+
A rare setting for Moody – a player who rarely cut sides with larger backing, but who sounds really wonderful here! The album's got Moody blowing mostly alto, and a bit of flute – over large backings by Torrie Zito that feature equal parts strings and woodwinds – conducted in a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt & Bennie Green

My Main Man
Argo, 1964. Near Mint-
A lost little cooker from Stitt and Green – recorded at a time when they were working together briefly, with backing by a Chicago organ trio that includes Bobby Buster on Hammond, Jo Diorio on guitar, and Dorel Anderson on drums. Tracks are short and fierce, but it's clear that Stitt can ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, Early 60s. Very Good
An incredibly groovy record, thanks to the presence of Candido on congas – who really gets plenty of room to do his thing in the spare setting of the set! Late night and moody, but with some great conga bits too! LP, Vinyl record album

John Young

Touch Of Pepper
Argo, 1962. Very Good+
One of the few sides ever recorded as a leader by Chicago soul jazz pianist John Young – a tasty trio set with just the right touch of pepper! The tracks are short and lively, very much in the mode of other Chicago trio players – like John Wright or Ramsey Lewis – and most of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good
A brilliant album that proves that even at the height of his success, Lee Morgan was one of the freest thinkers on Blue Note – always coming up with fresh ideas that continued to grow his talents! Hank Crawford

Mr Blues
Atlantic, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
A sweet soulful stepper from the mighty Hank Crawford – a set that's got a bit of the bluesy lines promised by the title, but which also has some snappier soul jazz modes played by a larger ensemble! Hank plays a bit of piano, in addition to his trademark alto sax – and the set's got a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Live! In Chicago
Prestige, 1961/1967. Near Mint-
Killer live work from Jug – recorded during the early 60s in Chicago, with just an organ-based trio, and very much in the feeling of the best small-group lounge jazz shows of the day! The material is issued here in a 1967 version, its first release – but the grooves were recorded at ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside/Milestone, 1960. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of those ubiquitous Milestone 70s two-fers combining two nice sides from the little giant. Bethlehem, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Nice early work by Herbie Mann – featuring a chamber-oriented sound, played by a quartet that features guitar, bass, and drums next to Herbie's flute and reeds. The set's mostly strong original tunes – shorter, uncomplicated numbers written with a bit of wit and angular finish. Two ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio Morricone

Burn!
United Artists, 1970. Near Mint-
A pretty nice Morricone score for this period piece that starred Marlon Brando, and was set in the Carribean during the early 19th century. The style of the work is similar to later Morricone scores with a more spiritual bent – like his superb score for The Mission – and it's got a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prodigy (of Mobb Deep)

HNIC
Loud, 2000. Near Mint- 2LP
Prodigy's solo debut HNIC – gritty and raw from intro to outro, with a methodical flow on par the with the best of his work with Mobb Deep in the best moments – while taking stylistic detours!
