Down Home Blues – The Best Of Lightnin Hopkins

LP (Item 630825) Souffle, Mid 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
(Cover has ring and edge wear, two spots of blue marker in fornt, and some yellowing from age in back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Albert Collins

Trash Talkin
Imperial, 1969. Very Good+
Fantastic early work from Albert Collins – almost as much of a funk album as a blues one! This set's not really funky in the same sense as many of Collins' contemporaries in the soul scene of the time – but it's got some great funky elements, especially in the drums and guitar, which ... T Bone Walker

Funky Town
Bluesway/ABC, Late 60s. Very Good+
Not as all-out funky as some of the funky blues albums on Chess at the time – but still nicely funky, and a very different album than usual for T Bone! Little Milton

Blues N Soul
Stax, 1974. Very Good+
Baaad bluesy work from Little Milton – one of his killers for Stax, and a record that's equally heavy on the soul tip too! There's a strong Memphis vibe going on here – thanks to arrangements from James Mitchell, and backings from the Memphis Horns – who really do a good job of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Cleanhead Vinson

Cherry Red
Bluesway, Late 60s. Very Good+
Eddie makes a nice little comeback here – singing in a style that's perhaps a bit rootsier than some of his classic sides, which actually had him working in a more sophisticated jazzy style – but which are still pretty nice, thanks to some good hard soul production. Muddy Waters

At Newport 1960
Chess, 1960. Sealed
Muddy Waters makes a classic appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival – playing a folksy set of blues in the years before the festival had turned more strongly towards that sort of music! The performance is surprisingly well-recorded – at a level that's similar to Waters' earlier studio ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Hancock

Maiden Voyage
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint-
A brilliant album – and real turning point for Herbie Hancock! After first coming onto the scene as the soul jazz hero between Blue Note funky classics like "Watermelon Man" or "Blind Man, Blind Man" – Herbie emerges here as a concerned modernist with a strand of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chet Baker

Chet Baker In Milan
Jazzland, 1959. Very Good+
A rare Italian album from Chet Baker – wonderfully cooking small group work that's a far bit greater than his more familiar "with strings" session recorded in Italy during the same period!
