Melancholy Benny – Benny Carter & His Orchestra 1939 to 1940

LP (Item 607514) Tax (Sweden), 1939/1940 — Condition: Near Mint-
$1.99 ...

LP

(€1.76 || £1.52 || ¥199) (approx.)

(Cover has light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Benny Carter In Paris
20th Century, 1964. Very Good
A surprisingly great album – even if it's short on information! There's no real dates on this one, so we have to assume that it's of the vintage of the album's release date – somewhere in the early 60s – making the album pretty late for Benny, but also pretty great as well! Impulse, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great example of the cool, classy swing that Benny Carter hit in the 1960s – a groove that was more regularly brought to backings for standout singers of the time, but which also works beautifully here in an instrumental mode! Carter's alto sax is at the top of the charts, but the album's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Infant Eyes
Black Jazz, 1971. Very Good-
An undisputed 70s soul jazz classic – and arguably the best album that Doug Carn ever cut for the Black Jazz label! The set is a masterpiece of spiritual jazz – with Carn on keyboards setting up the groove, and wife Jean singing some incredible vocals – very different than her ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sketches Of Spain
Columbia, 1960. Very Good+
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1963. Very Good+
Great great stuff – and for some folks, THE album by Kenny Burrell! One Flight Up
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good+
An unusual set for both Dexter and Blue Note – first, because the set was recorded in Europe (not at Rudy Van Gelder's), and second because the tracks are all quite long! The album was recorded in Paris – and is cut in an open-ended format that's very much in the mode that Gordon would ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1979. Very Good
The last full album from Caldera – and a wonderful set that's a perfect cap to their classic late 70s run on Capitol Records! The groove here is fusion, but with lots of Latin undercurrents – especially on the percussion, which rumbles up from the bottom to make for a nicely organic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Walk On By
Prestige, 1966. Very Good
Wonderful stuff from Brother Jack McDuff – very hip, with a mixture of soul jazz and 60s grooving that's hard to beat! One of the first albums to ever issue recordings made at the Newport Jazz Festival – quite a big hit, and the beginning of a real trend in jazz!
