Benny Carter with Oscar PetersonBenny Carter Meets Oscar Peterson ... LP
Pablo, 1986. Very Good ... $9.99
Benny Carter meets Oscar Peterson – two older giants from the Verve jazz scene of the 50s, recording here in loose quintet format three decades later! The album's got a format that's similar to some of the easy-flowing Verve dates from years back – no surprise, given that Norman Granz produced the set – and there's plenty of room for Carter's amazing tone on the alto to stretch out over mellow rhythms from Joe Pass on guitar, Dave Young on bass, and Martin Drew on drums. Titles include "Sweet Lorraine", "Just Friends", "Whispering", "Some Kind Of Blues", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Count BasieLegend – From The Pen Of Benny Carter ... LP
Roulette, Early 60s. Very Good ... $9.99
Benny Carter was really on fire in the 60s – a saxophonist who was not only re-asserting his role as a soloist, but also a growing new talent in the field of arranging, as well – on records like this killer outing with the Count Basie group, and a host of other excellent albums to come! The set features all original material by Carter – penned and arranged specifically with a Basie flair, and that group's special blend of modern elements and old-school swing – developed in the years with Neal Hefti, and carried through strongly here with Carter. Benny himself plays alto with the group – and other players include Frank Foster and Budd Johnson on tenors, Sam Herman on guitar, and Eddie Jones on bass – whose instrument lines up wonderfully with the drums of Sonny Payne to make for some very sweet bottom action on the set. Thad Jones and Snooky Young are on trumpets – and titles include "The Trot", "Easy Money", "Goin On", "The Swizzle", "Who's Blue", "The Legend", and "Turnabout". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono orange and pink label pressing. Cover has some wear and aging.)

✨✧ Count BasieKansas City Suite – The Music Of Benny Carter ... LP
Roulette, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little set – despite our initial fears about the package – and a really wonderful pairing of the talents of Count Basie and Benny Carter! We'll admit that we're the first ones to shy away from anything that says "Kansas City" in the title – as we expect a lot of hoke – but this album's a surprisingly great batch of tunes, original numbers written by Benny Carter in honor of the KC of days past, but arranged and performed by the Basie group in a swinging style that's got the best touches of their Roulette years, plus a bit of Ellingtonish ambition in the horn charts. Titles include "Katy Do", "Miss Missouri", "Jackson County Jubilee", "Sunset Glow", "Meetin Time", and "The Wiggle Walk". LP, Vinyl record album
(Color bar pressing, with deep groove. Cover has a small split on the top seam and some light wear.)

✨✧ Benny GolsonBenny Golson Quartets (Turning Point/Free) ... CD
Mercury/Gambit (Spain), 1962. Used ... Just Sold Out!
2 LPs of Benny Golson quartet sessions – 1962's Turning Point and Free – back-to-back on CD! First up is Turning Point, a beautiful album showcasing the tenor stylings of Golson in an intimate setting with Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Golson plays two originals, plus standards, and his tone is fantastic throughout! This is one of the few efforts from the period that really shows him in an open-ended jazz vein, without a focus on his arrangements – which are excellent! Titles include "Turning Point", "Stella By Starlight", "Three Little Words", "Alone Together" and "Dear Kathy". Next up is Free – another great one! The material has a beautifully confident tone, with Golson's tenor cutting, changing, and swinging perfectly in lines that are masterfully crafted, yet full of raw emotion. This quartet includes Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Arthur Taylor on drums – and titles inlcude "Sock Cha-Cha", "Shades Of Stein", "Just By Myself", "My Romance" and "Just In Time". CD also includes the bonus track "Impromptune" – cut in 1960 with Cedar Walton, Tommy Willams and Albert Tootie Heath. CD

Dizzy GillespieComposer's Concepts ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s/1977. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
Nice 2LP set that brings together some of his most striking sessions of the early 60s recorded for Emarcy. This set includes pieces composed and arranged by Lalo Schifrin played by a large ensemble led by Benny Carter – with Dizzy as the main soloist, and work by players that include James Moody, Phil Woods, Emil Richards, Francisco Aguabella, and Schifrin himself. Tracks are long, and have complicated introductions – then easily give way to the sort of flowing grooves that Schifrin was penning often at the time. Titles include "The Conquerors", "The Chains", "The Swords", "The Empire", and "The Legend Of Atlantis". The set also features Diz playing tracks from Tom McIntosh, one of the scene's brightest arrangers at the time, and a talent who was looming large, thanks to support from folks like Diz and James Moody. Moody's in the group – blowing tenor with a quintet that includes Kenny Barron on piano, Chris White on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums – and his tone is incredible, with a darkness that he'd rarely had before, and the whole group has a mixture of modern tones and soulful grooves that's beyond compare! Titles include "November Afternoon", "The Cup Bearers", "The Day After". Also included are songs from the soundtrack for the lost Shirley Clarke verite drama The Cool World. Mal Waldron wrote the material for the score, and Diz plays the music with a moody emotionality that you don't often hear in his other 60's work. The recording was made by his great group that included Kenny Barron and James Moody, and the titles include "The Pushers", "Duke's Fantasy", "Coney Island", and "Street Music". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a small corner cut, in great shape otherwise!)

A wickedly great album from Dizzy Gillespie – one of his most striking sessions of the early 60s, and a perfect blend of his Latin and modern modes! The album features an extended suite – composed and arranged by Lalo Schifrin, who'd just begun working with Dizzy at the time, and who was inflecting his sound with a lot of South American grooves. The work's played by a large ensemble led by Benny Carter – with Dizzy as the main soloist, and work by players that include James Moody, Phil Woods, Emil Richards, Francisco Aguabella, and Schifrin himself. Tracks are long, and have complicated introductions – then easily give way to the sort of flowing grooves that Schifrin was penning often at the time. Coleman HawkinsBody & Soul ... LP
Bluebird, Late 30s/1940s/Mid 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A nice overview of Coleman Hawkins' career in a great 2LP set, containing material recorded between 1939 and 1947, and later work recorded in 1956. Most of the early work is in a wonderful small group format that lets Hawkins' tenor really come to the forefront. Other players on the sessions include Benny Carter, JC Higginbotham, Allen Eager, Peter Brown, and Budd Johnson – and titles include "Half Step Down Please", "Bouncing With Bean", "Meet Doctor Foo", "Spotlite", "Low Flame", and "Jumping For Jane". The later work features the orchestra of Billy Byers, including soloists Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and Hank Jones. Coleman's the main blower, though – and the arrangements have a solid base that lets him open up in that exploratory tone he was crafting during the time. And although tracks are short, there's a heck of a lot of soul packed into them – recorded with impeccable quality, much more so than earlier sides. Titles include "I Never Knew", "Bean & The Boys", "The Essence of You", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Dinner For One Please, James", and "I'm Shooting High". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Zoot SimsPassion Flower – Zoot Sims Plays Duke Ellington ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1979/1980. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Kind of an unusual session for Zoot Sims – one that features him as the main soloist in a batch of Duke Ellington material – played by a large group arranged and conducted by Benny Carter! Sims is still the main focus of the record – and his tenor gets plenty of solo space throughout, even though a few of the tracks are a bit shortish – and Carter is sensitive enough to the material to maintain an older Ellington vibe, but still get creative at the right points. Sims' tone is great – almost as raspy as that of Johnny Hodges in the Ellington group of the old days – and titles include "Passion Flower", "Bojangles", "In A Mellow Tone", "I Got It Bad & That Ain't Good", "Black Butterfly", "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me", and "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart". Edison/Modern Harmonic, 1959. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99 On December 10, 2021
Spare vocals and light guitar – an approach that's quite similar to the late 50s Liberty work of Julie London – and which features vocalist Claudio Thompson singing to great accompaniment from guitarist Barney Kessel! The style here is moody and mellow – not nearly as romantic as you might guess from the cover, and with some great dark undercurrents that really help keep the album interesting throughout. As proved by his Liberty work with London, Barney's a great talent for such a date – and plays here in small groups that feature Ted Nash on flute or alto, Benny Carter on alto, Paul Smith or Arnold Ross on piano, and Red Mitchell on bass. A few tunes feature some light added horns, but a few more feature only guitar and bass – making for an especially spare and intimate sound. Titles include "I'm Through With Love", "The Morning After", "Goodbye", "You Call It Madness", "Fan Me", "I Was Yours", and "Gloomy Sunday". CD

✨✧ Jackie Wilson with Count BasieManufacturers Of Soul (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Brunswick/Demon (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful collaboration between two very unlikely partners – and a great album that really stands out as some of the best work from both artists in the 60s! Count Basie's group gets hard and soulful on the record – and even a little funky on the best cuts – and Jackie Wilson is in a raw bluesy vocal style that recalls the best moments of his earlier Brunswick singles – a great edge that makes the whole Basie groove sound even more hard-hitting than ever. Benny Carter arranged, but the groove is more a hard-edged Count Basie mode mixed with Brunswick soul styles – and Jackie blows it out over the top on great versions of "Funky Broadway", "Ode To Billie Joe", "I Was Made To Love Her", "Even When You Cry", and "Respect". Also features a version of "For Your Precious Love" that was a bit of a hit for the pair! LP, Vinyl record album
