Together Again For The Last Time

LP (Item 15969) Prestige, 1976 — Condition: Very Good+
1973 recording that would become the last that Jug and Stitt did before Jug's untimely death in the mid 70's. Duke Pearson produced it (even though it wasn't for Blue Note), and the group includes Junior Mance on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and either Mickey Roker or Ajaramu on drums. Tracks include "One For Amos", "The Window Pain", "Saxification", and "I'll Close My Eyes".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Canadian pressing.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, 1961/1962. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
A nice little 2-fer collecting two great meetings of two greats! Jug and Stitt go head to head on Boss Tenors, a classic album of tracks that perfectly captures the joy and fury of their live performances from years before! The record was cut in Chicago with a very hard rhythm section that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tadd Dameron

Fontainebleau
Prestige, 1956. Near Mint-
A beautiful album of material by Tadd Dameron – and one that still stands as one of his greatest moments! The record features 5 long readings of classic Dameron compositions – like "The Scene Is Clean", "Fontainebleau", and "Delerium" – all played by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Illinois Jacquet

How High The Moon
Prestige, Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold

John Coltrane

Last Trane
Prestige, 1957/1958. Very Good
A nice set – despite being kind of a put-together batch of tunes! The album's titled "The Last Trane" because it represents the last material that Prestige Records had in its vault from the time that John Coltrane was recording for the label in the late 50s. Titles were recorded ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt

Soul Electricity
Prestige, 1968. Very Good-
Plenty of electricity – as the legendary reedman plays a bit of Varitone tenor sax, mixed with more conventional alto – in a mode that gives the whole record a very groovy 60s sort of vibe! The combo also features superb Hammond from the mighty Don Patterson, sharp guitar from Billy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Willis Jackson

Gator's Groove
Prestige, 1969. Near Mint-
A great lost session from tenorist Willis Jackson – who also plays his gator horn here – right up there with some of his best groovers of the 60s, and recorded with a nice little group of fresh players! The lesser-known organist Jackie Ivory is on the session, and Wild Bill Jennings ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Sock
Prestige, 1965. Very Good-
A striking title – and a strong set of grooves, even if the tracks were pulled from a variety of different sessions, and not recorded as a unified album. Jug plays tenor on all cuts – working in formats that range from a Mal Waldron led trio to larger honking groups with horn players ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Odyssey
Prestige, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Mid 60s issue of earlier work that Miles cut in the 50s – some great tracks that show him breaking from the tighter shorter bop work of the earlier years, and heading into some stretched out sides that have a very open-ended approach. The group on the session is mostly a quartet – with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Blues Up & Down Vol 1
Prestige, 1950. Sealed
A great meeting of tenor talents – a collection of some fantastic early material recorded by Jug for Prestige. This collection of great sides, originally issued as 78s, features Ammons and Stitt locking horns on "Blues Up And Down", "You Can Depend On Me", "Easy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Boss Is Back!
Prestige, 1969. Very Good
A great comeback for tenor legend Gene Ammons – not just in a musical sense, but also because Jug had spent most of the past few years in prison – as part of the usual trumped-up drug charges that were filed against musicians at the time! At the time of this album, Ammons had not ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roland Kirk with Jack McDuff

Funk Underneath (aka Kirk's Work)
Prestige, 1966. Very Good+
A strange and tasty little album that Roland Kirk made with organist Jack McDuff in the early 60s – one of his few outings in such a format, and a smoking little session that almost makes us wish he'd cut more of them! The format is relatively simple – with lots of interplay between ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wayne Shorter

Super Nova
Blue Note, 1969. Near Mint-
A pivotal record for Wayne Shorter – as the set opens up with a hint of the direction he'd take in the 70s, especially some of the music he'd create with Weather Report! The album's not a straight fusion outing, though, and it does have a fuller group than a fusion combo – yet there is ... LP, Vinyl record album
