Something Old, New & Blue

LP (Item 54693) Solid State, 1967 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
Great late work from Joe – one of the few fine albums he cut with backing by the orchestra of Thad Jones – somewhere between his most swinging work with Basie, and the groovier sound of later years. The tunes are short, jazzy, and feature Joe hitting some wonderful strides – showing he had a lot more imagination than most of the younger jazz singers who were just coming on the scene. Titles include "Did I Really Live", "Hurry On Down", "One For My Baby", "Young Man On The Way Up", "When I Take My Sugar To Tea", and "Everybody Wants To Be Loved".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has minimal wear, and is nice overall.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Joe Williams

Worth Waiting For
Blue Note, Late 60s. Very Good+
LP...$9.99 11.99
Joe Williams was really reviving his career as a vocalist at this point – working with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis big band on a few well-selling records, and on this smoother set with arrangements by Horace Ott. The overall feel is kind of in a swinging Grady Tate mode, with jazziness ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 50s. Near Mint-
An excellent album of vocals by the great Joe Williams! Joe's always been a fine singer, but with Basie, he really gets the backing he needs to do his work the best. And although this album isn't as authenico as it might be, it still comes from a time when Verve really knew how to handle singers ... LP, Vinyl record album

Where Is Love?
Choice, 1975. Near Mint-
Mid 70s magic from vocalist Irene Kral – one of a handful of albums that really had Kral setting herself apart from most other jazz vocal contemporaries! The approach here is very simple – just Irene's voice and piano backing from Alan Broadbent – but a hell of a lot goes on in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Nina Simone

Black Gold
RCA, 1970. Very Good
Black Gold indeed – as the album's a real classic from Nina, one of the excellent sets she cut with the Stroud Productions imprint during the early 70s! The style here is even hipper than her late 60s work on Philips – with a mixture of open-ended jazz and soul that's best summed up in ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1964. Very Good Gatefold
A beautiful album by one of our favorite jazz singers!
