Pyramid

LP (Item 522797) Atlantic, Late 50s — Condition: Very Good+
Features a long reading of "Pyramid" – plus "Django", "Romaine", "Vendome", and "It Don't Mean A Thing".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original stereo green label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear & aging, tiny split on the bottom.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Music From Odds Against Tomorrow
United Artists, 1959. Near Mint- Gatefold
A brilliant album through and through – not just a standout from the late 50s years of the Modern Jazz Quartet, but also a compelling soundtrack composed entirely by pianist John Lewis! Lewis' writing was always a key part of the group's sound, but here it really comes into its own – ... LP, Vinyl record album

The MJQ always manage to sound especially great when working on music for film – and this album's a great illustration of that fact! Modern Jazz Quartet

Lonely Woman
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good
LP...$9.99 11.99
Truly one of the Modern Jazz Quartet's greatest albums – and a set that has an edge and a darkness that's missing from some of their other Atlantic records! Part of the reason for this may be the group's fantastic reading of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" – a killer moody ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Live At The Lighthouse

An overlooked later gem from the Modern Jazz Quartet on Atlantic – a live set recorded at the Lighthouse, and one with a funkier tone than some of the group's earlier work for the label! Ornette Coleman

Free Jazz
Atlantic, 1961. Near Mint- Gatefold
The title gets it right – as the album's easily the closest thing to free jazz that Ornette Coleman ever recorded – an album-length improvisation played by a "double quartet" that's overflowing with classic players! The style here is a fair bit like John Coltrane's Ascension ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Brubeck with Gerry Mulligan

Last Set At Newport
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+
A rare meeting of 2 modern talents from the 50s – joined together in one unique performance from the Newport Jazz Festival in 1971! The baritone sax of Gerry Mulligan's a nice contrast to the usual Brubeck alto of Paul Desmond – long-departed from Dave's combo by this time, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
