❔
With Branford Marsalis on tenor, Mark Soskin and Tommy Flangan on piano, Jerome Harris on guitar, and Clifton Anderson on trombone. Titles include "Sister", "Little Girl Blue", "For All We Know", and "I Should Care".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover a touch of light wear, but looks great overall.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Contemporary, 1958. Sealed
One of Sonny's brilliant west coast sessions for Contemporary – records that shouldn't sparkle as much as they do, but which actually stand with his best work of the 50s! Sonny's blowing in front of a session of "leaders" that includes Hampton Hawes, Barney Kessel, Leroy Vinnegar, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Rollins

Sonny Boy
Prestige, 1956. Very Good
Frenetic bop work from Sonny Rollins – recorded in 1956 with an open-mouthed tone that's certainly less controlled than later years, but still no less compelling! Sonny races along some of these tracks like a train out of control – especially on "B Quick" and "B ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1958. Very Good
Quite an unusual record for Sonny Rollins – but a great one too! At first glance the concept is a strange one – almost a crazy decision to pair modernist tenorist Sonny Rollins with a set of large brassy arrangements – but oddly, the idea works, and works nicely – as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Rollins

Alfie
Impulse, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
A beautiful soundtrack to the dark British comedy of the same name – starring a young Michael Caine! You might expect it to be a bit schmaltzy, but it's pure jazz all the way through, and features strong inside playing by Rollins over lively orchestrations by Oliver Nelson – filled ... Sonny Rollins

Shadow Waltz
Jazzland, Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good
Early 60's album that repackages Rollins' classic Freedom Suite recording for Riverside. The record is exactly the same – and features Rollins on tenor, in a spare stripped-down trio that include Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach. His playing is amazing – especially on the extended "F ... Sonny Rollins

Bridge
RCA, 1962. Very Good+
A landmark album from Sonny Rollins – one that marked his comeback in the early 60s, after a brief period of retirement, and which also initiated a string of incredible recordings with guitarist Jim Hall. Given Hall's gentleness and spare modernity on the guitar, a fan of Rollins' hard-blowin ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1965. Very Good Gatefold
A tremendous little album from Sonny Rollins – one of his most sharp-edged sessions of the mid 60s, and a bold departure from some of his previous work for RCA! The album has a crackling sense of energy that more than lives up to the exclamation point in the title – a starker quality ... LP, Vinyl record album

McCoy Tyner

Fly With The Wind
Milestone, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
Don't be put off by the late date of the session, because this is an excellent album from McCoy Tyner – and one with a very spiritual groove that's clearly inherited from Coltrane! The album's based around longer compositions arranged by Tyner, and orchestrated by the great William S Fischer ... LP, Vinyl record album
