Toughest Tenors

LP (Item 15948) Milestone, Early 60s/1976 — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold
Originally: 9.99
70's 2LP set that reissues some of the classic tenor material from Griff and Lockjaw recorded for the Jazzland label in the early 60's. The set's got some great gutsy hardbop material, plus a number of excellent Monk interpretations. Titles include "Epistrophy", "Camp Meeting", "Tin Tin Deo", "Walkin", and "Good Bait". Nice set of notes on the duo, too!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a promo stamp.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Riverside/Milestone, 1963. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A great west coast live date from Bill Evans – one that showed that his magic on the keys was equally at home in LA as it was in New York! Ron Carter

Peg Leg
Milestone, 1978. Near Mint-
A great step in the evolution of Ron Carter from brilliant bassist to even more brilliant leader! The album's cut at a time when Carter was really moving his instrument from the back to the front – playing piccolo bass more than usual, and plucking with a pronounced groove, even in the ... Bill Evans

Interplay Sessions
Riverside/Milestone, 1962/1982. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A real standout in the Bill Evans catalog for Riverside – and that's saying a lot, given how important all of his Riverside albums are! The core session's a rare quintet outing for Evans – one that breaks the mode of the usual trio format by adding in Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Jim ... LP, Vinyl record album

A Song For You
Milestone, 1978. Near Mint-
Ron Carter's such a great player, he can always shine in so many modes – bringing the bass not just into the forefront of a tune, but taking into places that other musicians wouldn't reach! Sonny Rollins

Don't Stop The Carnival
Milestone, 1978. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Despite the title, which seems a bit silly, the album's actually one of Sonny's best from the 70s – an open-ended live set, recorded with a group that features both electric and acoustic piano, plus guitar and electric bass in the rhythm section – making for a nice slightly funky groove ... Jim Hall/Ron Carter

Alone Together
Milestone, 1972. Very Good+
The title's an apt one, as the session features spare, unaccompanied duets between guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Ron Carter – done at a time when both players were stepping into some of their warmest, most sensitive years. Hall's especially great here – and even though he had already ... LP, Vinyl record album
Milestone, Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A pretty cool 2LP set – one that dips back into Wes' early recordings for Riverside, and brings together a bunch of alternate takes of the tunes that appeared on albums like Full House, Guotar On The Go, Bags Meets Wes, and Groove Yard. New Perspective
Blue Note, 1963. Near Mint-
