Three Giants! (Prestige Historical Series)

LP (Item 671048) Prestige, Mid 50s — Condition: Very Good+

Nice album that contains a mid-50s session recorded by Rollins for Prestige – with a quintet that includes the Clifford Brown-Max Roach ensemble, with Rollins filling in the tenor spot. Richie Powell's on piano, and the whole group has a very tight "roots of hardbop" sort of sound. Includes a classic reading of "Pent-up House", plus "Valse Hot", "Kiss & Run", and "Count Your Blessings".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue label pressing, in a maroon cover, with some light wear and a cutout hole.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sonny Rollins

Our Man In Jazz
RCA, 1963. Very Good
One of Sonny Rollins' best albums ever, and a totally inspired, totally non-stop freewheeling live set, recorded with Don Cherry, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins! Working on long tracks in an unfettered setting, Rollins' hits one of those rare moments of genius where he can turn his solo over and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Metrojazz, 1958. Very Good
A strange one, and from this perspective, it seems like a crazy decision to pair modernist tenorist Sonny Rollins with a set of large brassy arrangements. Oddly, though, the idea works, and works nicely – as Rollins' edgey solos cut through the heavy arrangements with ease, creating some ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1965. Near Mint-
A tremendous little album from Sonny Rollins – one of his most sharp-edged sessions of the mid 60s, and a bold departure from some of his previous work for RCA! The album has a crackling sense of energy that more than lives up to the exclamation point in the title – a starker quality ... LP, Vinyl record album

Idrees Sulieman, Pepper Adams, Cecil Payne, et al

Roots
Prestige, Mid 50s. Very Good+
A great little Pretige blowing session album – featuring long long tracks, played by 2 groups of different players, both led by trumpeter Idrees Sulieman! Side one features the track "Roots" – a great laidback groover played by a sextet that include Sulieman on trumpet, ... LP, Vinyl record album
MPS/Prestige, 1967. Very Good+

George Wallington

Jazz For The Carriage Trade
Prestige, 1956. Near Mint-
Sublime work from pianist George Wallington – and one of his best albums ever! Freddie Roach

Mocha Motion
Prestige, 1967. Very Good+
One of Freddie's best ever albums – and a cool session that has a much more laid back, less hokey, and groovier feel than his Blue Note stuff. Freddie leads a trio that includes Vincent Corrao on guitar and Eddie Gladden on drums, and the group is augmented by Ralph Dorsey's conga. Freddie ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody

Moody's Workshop
Prestige, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
A great set from Moody, nice and edgey, with his genius firmly in place! Quincy Jones handled the arrangements, and the group swings in a variety of modes. Moody's on alto and tenor – no flute yet at this point – and highlights include "Workshop", a great number with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dexter Gordon

Ca'Purange
Prestige, 1973. Very Good
One of Dexter's best sessions from the 70s – and one that's got more soul, more power, and more ensemble playing than a lot of his other "soloist with European rhythm section" albums. The group's a great one – with Thad Jones, Hank Jones, and Louis Hayes laying down some very ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Lockjaw Davis/Coleman Hawkins/Arnett Cobb/Bu

Very Saxy (second cover)
Prestige, 1959. Near Mint-
The title's terrible, but the album's a great one – a really classic-styled jam session, of the sort that the Prestige label hardly ever recorded! The session features 4 tenor giants of slightly older vintage – Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Coleman Hawkins, Arnett Cobb, and Buddy Tate – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Quinichette

For Basie
Prestige, 1957. Near Mint-
Smoking tenor sax from Paul Quinichette – heard here in a small group of Basie bandmates, but in a setting that also has all the players stretch out a lot more than usual! Tracks are a bit long, and in addition to Quinichette on tenor, the set also features Shad Collins on trumpet, Nat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Ensemble Of Chicago

Phase One (Prestige pressing)
Prestige, 1971/1973. Near Mint-
One of the headiest albums ever recorded by the Art Ensemble of Chicago – a brilliant mix of noise and silence that rivals some of the greatest genius of the 20th century avant composition! The album's lead track "Ohnedaruth" builds slowly with a variety of percussion – ... LP, Vinyl record album
