We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Blue Note, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Classic Jimmy Smith trio material, and a savage bit of raw organ grooves from the late 50's. Jimmy's work on the keys is fierce, and filled with wild flourishes that you don't always hear in his later albums. The record includes a nice long version of Dizzy Gillespie's "The Champ", plus ... To Seek A New Home
Blue Note, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great little album that has McDuff soloing on Hammond, over larger funkier arrangements – very much in the manner of his sublime Moon Rapping set, also recorded for Blue Note. Arrangements are by JJ Jackson and Jerry Long – and McDuff will blow your mind as he navigates the mix of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Solid
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good
An excellent set by Grant Green – recorded in 1964, but not issued until close to 1980, when Blue Note first pulled it out of the vaults, and dropped it on the world! The session's a great one – with an unusual lineup that features Green's guitar in a sextet, with McCoy Tyner on piano, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Donald Byrd's Best
Blue Note, Early 70s/1975. Very Good-
A tasty collection of goodies that Donald recorded with the great Larry Mizell during the early 70s. Certainly not his all-inclusive best, but some of our favorite material by this legendary soul jazz trumpeter. The tracks have a sparkling electric jazz funk sound, with amazing production that ... Blue Note, 1974. Very Good
Fabulous stuff – one of the legendary albums that funky flute player Bobbi Humphrey cut with producer Larry Mizell! The record's a prime example of the Mizell genius at work – as Larry's arranged these fantastic backdrops for Bobbi's flute – soaring keyboard lines, layers and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Super Nova
Blue Note, 1969. Near Mint-
A bit of a hint of the 70's work by Shorter – as he plays here with a slightly larger group, and a bit of an electric sound. Sonny Sharrock and John McLaughlin play guitar, Airto plays percussion, and Maria Booker sings vocals on a rendition of "Dindi" – and this complicted ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note (Japan), 1959. Near Mint-
A beautiful session by Tommy Flanagan – recorded in 1959, but not issued at the time until it was pulled out for this great Blue Note "Lost Sessions" series from Japan! The set's incredible, and although it features all compositions from West Side Story, Flanagan's playing with a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ultimate Elvin Jones
Blue Note, 1968. Near Mint-
An incredible trio album – not just for the powerful drums of the great Elvin Jones, but also for amazing work on reeds by a young Joe Farrell! Farrell's in his pre-CTI years here, and really lets loose in the space of the album's open setting – a trio that just features Jones on drums ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sermon!
Blue Note, Early 60s. Very Good+
One of the Jimmy Smith "jam session" Blue Notes, with a large group that includes Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, George Coleman, Tina Brooks, and Art Blakey – nearly all of whom take long solos and dig deep to compete with each other. 3 long tracks, "The Sermon", "JOS&quo ... LP, Vinyl record album
Aladdin Sessions
Blue Note, Late 40s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Some of the best early work by Prez – all recorded in small combo sessions for Aladdin Records during the years 1945 through 1948. The album's one of the few chances you can get to hear Prez blowing clear and free from the time, in that amazing tone which inspired generations of players, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sidewinder
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good
A jazz classic if there ever was one – and the best-selling album ever by Lee Morgan, thanks to the use of the title track in a car commercial!
