✨✧ Sonny ClarkSonny Clark Trio (Blue Note RVG pressing) ... CD
Blue Note, Late 50s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Sublime trio material from Sonny – recorded with Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, and a crackling full-on approach that makes the album one of the best straight trio sessions ever cut for Blue Note! Tracks are longish, with a very hardbop groove – complicated in that way that Clark's modern edge could often bring to the piano, but never failing to swing, and always sticking right in the pocket! Titles include "Be Bop", "Two Bass Hit", "Tadd's Delight", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" – and the CD features 3 bonus alternate takes! CD

Takuya Kuroda, Akihiro Nishiguchi, & OthersBlue Note Voyage ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 2019. New Copy ... $29.99
A really fantastic 80th birthday tribute to Blue Note Records – one that has a host of younger Japanese jazz musicians banding together to deliver their own versions of Blue Note classics from back in the day! The lineup is wonderful, and very adept at changing up from track to track – Jun Miyakwawa on Hammond and piano, Takuya Kuroda on trumpet, Akihiro Nishiguchi on tenor, May Inoue on guitar, Ai Kuwabara on piano, Ryuta Tsunoda on bass, and both Tomo Kanno and Shun Ishiwaka on drums – players who not only understand the spirit of the music, but also very much rise with each other in a sense of fresh arrangements that moves the record way past just a sleepy remake of the past! Instead, we hear plenty of currents of the more contemporary Tokyo scene – on titles that include "Maiden Voyage", "Feel Like Makin Love", "Cleopatra's Dream", "Midnight Blue", "Song For My Father", "Sidewinder", and "Night In Tunisia". Blue Note, 1956. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.99
Amazing early work from Sonny Rollins – the first of his tremendous Blue Note albums – and a record that really shows him taking off at the time! The record captures Rollins at a key turning point – emerging from his firey bop years, moving into a much more complicated, introspective tenor style that was a perfect showcase for his developing genius for improvisation – not as far out as in a few years to come, but already awash in imagination and creativity. The group here includes Donald Byrd on trumpet, Wynton Kelly on piano, Gene Ramey on bass, and Max Roach on drums – but as with all Rollins Blue Note sessions, his tenor is the dominant force. Titles include "Bluesnote", "Plain Jane", "Sonnysphere", and "Decision". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John ScofieldSteady Groovin' – The Blue Note Groove Sides ... CD
Blue Note, Late 90s. Used ... $4.99
In one of the more surprising turns of the 90s, guitarist John Scofield has emerged as one of the better funky players of his generation. Scofield never set out to blow anyone's mind as a funkster – but recent underground live sets with groups like Medeski Martin & Wood and Soulive have proved to audiences that he's really picked up a groove – and scattered performances on Blue Note recordings of the past few years have showed him to be equally funky on CD. This 11 track set collects the best of these groove-oriented performances by Scofield, creating one funky CD out of scattered tracks from other albums. Titles include "Camp Out", "Kool", "Do Like Eddie", "Fat Lip", "Big Top", and "Twang". CD

A fantastic chapter in the continuing evolution of trumpeter Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – a set recorded at the Blue Note in New York, just days before the city had to shut down in 2020 – and a record that maybe carries with it some of the urgency of that moment! Scott's studio records in recent years have really blown us away – but it's maybe even more amazing here to hear him working with the group in this frenzy of colors, tones, and rhythms! In addition to conventional trumpet, Christian blows a reverse flugelhorn, which has an amazing sound – and his group features really intense work on drums from Cory Fonville, whose efforts on the kit seem to set everyone else on fire – a lineup taht features Lawrence Fields on piano and Rhodes, Kris Funn on bass, Weedie Braimah on percussion, and Elena Pinderhughes on flute. The music is tremendous – full of power, life, and message – on titles that include "Diaspora", "The Last Chieftain", "X Adjuah", "Huntress", "Incarnation", "Songs She Never Heard", "Guinnevere", and "Sunrise In Beijing". ✨✧ Wayne ShorterClassic Blue Note Recordings ... CD
Blue Note, 1960s. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
2CDs worth of Wayne Shorter's Blue Note recordings – what more could a jazz fan ask for? Without a doubt, Shorter ranks among the most significant jazz composers for small ensembles of the modern era, and it's easy to see why on these recordings, where his vision was fully formed, but that doesn't take away from appreciation of his skill as a soloist, weaving beautiful, intricate lines. As you might imagine, the sidemen here reads like a roster of the most important jazzmen of the age, and their playing here is stellar, including Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones and Tony Williams, with the tracks pulled from LPs like Speak No Evil, Night Dreamer and Adam's Apple among others. The second disc of the set focuses on his playing as a in others' groups, with a nice chunk devoted to the Jazz Messengers. 22 trcks in all, including 'Black Nile", "Yes Or No", "Speak No Evil", "Infant Eyes", "Angola", "Etcetera", "Adam's Apple", "Footprints", "The Chess Players", "Ping Pong", "Children Of The Night" and "Nefertiti". Sadao WatanabeSadao 2019 – Live At Blue Note Tokyo ... CD
Victor (Japan), 2020. New Copy ... $23.99
We've loved saxophonist Sadao Watanabe for many years, through many different styles, and he's still sounding wonderful after all his decades in music – playing live in a laidback quartet setting, in a performance that's very heavy on his own compositions too! The backing is top-shelf, but nicely understated – Russell Ferrante on piano, John Patitucci on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums – moving with a gentle swing, but really letting Sadao take the lead on alto sax – blowing soulful, well-crafted solos of the sort that you'd maybe be more likely to hear on this sort of session from a tenor. Titles include "Warm Days Ahead", "Butterfly", "Plum Island", "Tembea", "Waiting Song", and "Early Spring". CD

Blue Note (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $24.99
A great look at the way that the Blue Note record label renewed its commitment to jazz guitar in the 70s – finding some of the best new talents of the decade, and recording the instrument in a variety of different ways! The Blue Note jazz funk sides of the time are very well-known, but the music here is nicely expanded past those modes – to include some great mellow moments, fusion tracks, and even some numbers that completely defy easy description! There's a heck of a lot of great guitarists on the set – Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Robby Krieger, Dom Minasi, Ray Gomez, Reggie Lucas, Earl Klugh, John Rowin, Tommy Bolin, and Joe Beck – and CD2 is made entirely of tracks that feature David T Walker on guitar. Titles include "Night Whistler", "Sister Love", "Dance Band", and "Makin It" by Donald Byrd – plus "Some Neck" by Ronnie Foster, "Beginnings" and "Soft Cycles" by Gene Harris, "New York City" and "Golden Rainbows" by Alphonse Mouzon, "Baby's Gone" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Sitting Here All Alone" by The Waters, "New Day" and "Fever" by Ronnie Laws, "Only Women Bleed" by Carmen McRae, "RK Bossa" by Dom Minasi, "Gum Popper" by Robbie Krieger, "Andy's Walk" by Chico Hamilton, and the killer cuts "Mango Sunrise" and "Rise On" by John Lee & Gerry Brown. Blue Note (Holland), 1960s/1970s/2005. Used 2CD ... $9.99
If there's anyone we'd trust with a trip through the Blue Note catalog, it's Jazzanova – as the group have been a key force in the jazz-inspired sound of the global dancefloor for many years! This set's the 4th in Blue Note's "Trip" series – and it may well be the best, as Jazzanova really know their way around a groove – and manage to get way past the obvious in their selection of tracks from the Blue Note catalog of the 60s and 70s. The hits are pushed aside for some lesser-known gems that stretch out with a wonderfully fluid approach to a jazzy groove – mixing together fusion, Latin, and soul jazz influences with ease – all in a double-length set of tracks that features one mixed batch on each CD! 2CD version features the tracks "You Make Me Feel So Good" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Yu Yo" by Bobby Hutcherson, "Afreaka" by Lee Morgan, "Beatrice" by Sam Rivers, "A Time For Spring" by Nicola Conte, "Tin Tin Deo" by James Moody, "Congalegra" by Horace Parlan, "Song Of Will" by Eddie Gale, "Hello To The Wind" by Bobby Hutcherson, "Morning Side Of Love" by Chico Hamilton, "Sitting Here All Alone" by Waters, "Quantrale" by Curtis Fuller, and "Baltimore Oriole" by Sheila Jordan. Volume 2 of a pair of LPs that brought together Miles Davis' early recordings for Blue Note – some excellent sessions recorded in 1952, 1953, and 1954, featuring Miles' young trumpet blowing in a wonderful mix of cool, bop, lyrical, and modern jazz. The style's a bit rougher than later years, but in a good way – one that shows that Miles' ideas were not accidents, or studio magic, but the brilliant expressions of a musician who was years ahead of his time. Madlib invades Blue Note! He gets free reign of the catalog for this mix of sampler genius and live band interpretations, too, as/with Ahmad Miller, Yesterdays New Quintet, Malcolm Catto, Medaphoar, and others from the Stones Throw camp. This one's truly a conceptual triumph, if there ever was such a thing – one of the greatest hip hop producers alive, given carte blanche with the source beats of the century! Madlib's Blue Note crates are heavily weighed in the mid 60s through mid 70s electric beats that often get the shaft in mainstream jazz round-ups, but floor the beathead world into overdrive. Re-interpretations, remixes, and revisions are spliced seamlessly with the source samples, creating a whole new world where hip hop and late model live funk not only co-exists with classic Blue Note jazz, but it actually draws a linear transition between the 2 genius art forms. Beautiful stuff – if the album isn't the most original idea to come along all of these years into the hip hop & jazz underground, it's certainly one of the most perfectly realized projects of its kind, ever! It's one for the time capsule – easily one of Madlib's masterpieces, and pure funky sample wizardry by any standard! Includes Monk Higgins' "Slim's Return" interpreted by Ahmad Miller and DJ Lord Such on cuts, "Donald Byrd's "Distant Land", "Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Bounce", Yesterday's New Quintet's adaptation of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", Madlib Invazion's "Funky Blue Note", the Joe McDuphrey Experience take on Horace Silver's/Herbie Hancock's "Peace/Dolphin Dance" and lots more. The sound of Blue Note Records – reimagined, but by a younger British group of musicians who don't record for the label at all! The sound here is more like recent work on Brownswood, A22, or Impulse Records – as the collection features lots of great contributions from artists who are really reinventing the sound of jazz – not in cheapo remix ways, or styles that are gimmicky – but modes that are deeply committed to the spirit of older music, yet expressing things in ways that are groundbreaking and completely unique! A fantastic run of work from pianist Mal Waldron – an artist who was already years ahead of his time when he broke on the scene in the 50s, but never got a chance to fully explore all of his many musical ideas until he formed a strong partnership with the Black Saint/Soul Note label in the 80s! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really cooking at full strength! The groove here is a bit harder, heavier, and hardbop-inflected than some of Trane's late 50s sides with Red Garland – thanks to a lineup that features Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. There's a crisp modern edge to the record that really holds up beautifully – even after years of play – and titles include "Blue Train, "Locomotion", "Moment's Notice", and "Lazy Bird". CD

Grant GreenAm I Blue (RVG Remaster) ... CD
Blue Note, 1963. Used ... $12.99
One of Grant Green's mellowest albums – a haunting set of intimate ballads and blues, played with a quintet that includes John Patton on organ, Joe Henderson on tenor, and Johnny Coles on trumpet. Henderson and Coles give the album a very different feel than the usual Grant Green soul bop session – and Green proves himself to be a sensitive soloist more than capable of opening up new moods and colors of old standards like "For All We Know", "Am I Blue", and "I Wanna Be Loved". You know, we can remember a time when Michael Cuscuna used to say that Grant Green's late sessions for Blue Note were just a bunch of throwaway funk records. Now, though, the label seems to be doing everything it can to get behind Green's late 60s/early 70s jazz output – and this compilation of rare breakbeat tracks is total proof of that! The set's got 6 funky guitar groovers, including Grant's version of James Brown's "Ain't It Funky Now", plus "The Final Comedown", "Ease Back", "Sookie Sookie", and "Cataloupe Woman". CD

Blue Note, Late 60s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Lyrical beauty from the great Blue Mitchell – a really soulful set of tunes that has him exploring all the lessons he learned from Horace Silver! A young Chick Corea is on the set on piano, shading the tunes with some slightly Latin touches – and fitting in surprisingly well with a quintet lineup that also includes Junior Cook on tenor, Gene Taylor on bass, and Al Foster on drums. The set's excellent throughout, and includes some great material like "Alone, Alone, and Alone" (written by a young Terumasa Hino), "March On Selma", and "Samba De Stacy". A tough one to find, and a real high point in mid 60's jazz! CD

The thing to do – is jam! Blue's sounding wonderful in this classic set for Blue Note – one of his best small group albums – recorded with a sound that's solidly in keeping with his lyrically melodic work in the Horace Silver group! The quintet features Chick Corea on piano – sounding incredibly subtle, and making us wish he'd recorded more sides like this – plus Junior Cook on tenor, nicely matching Blue as he did on so many albums from the time – and bass by Gene Taylor and drums by Al Foster. Titles include the hit soul jazzer "Fungii Mama", plus more introspective numbers like "Mona's Mood", "Chick's Tune", "Step Lightly", and "The Thing To Do". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $29.99
Two legendary Japanese DJs take on the Blue Note catalog – and come up with some amazing results in the process! Both DJ Krush and Muro serve up a non-stop mix in this collection – one each per disc – and the music is really transformed by their magical talents on the decks, at a level that takes us back to the sorts of cool projects that Japanese Blue Note was handling at the start of the century – when they were really inviting some younger talents to breathe new life into their catalog! Neither Muro nor Krush are spring chickens, but they definitely give a strong 21st Century vibe to this music – really expanding on a range of tracks that are mostly pulled from the late 60s/early 70s run of Blue Note. Krush mixes tunes that include "Feeling You Feeling Me Too" by Gene Harris, "Before You Leave" by Alphonse Mouzon, "I'm On My Way" by Candido, "Oblighetto" by Jack McDuff, "Move Your Hand" by Lonnie Smith, "Blue Juice" by Jimmy McGriff, "Mestizo Eyes" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Little Green Apples" by Monk Higgins, and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" by Lou Donaldson – and Muro mixes up tunes that include "Acid Pot Or Pills" by Horace Silver, "Classic Funke" by Jack McDuff, "New York Times" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Trying Hard To Look Inside" by Waters, "Cristo Redentor (part 2)" by Gene Harris, "Down Here On The Ground" by Grant Green, "Summer Song" by Ronnie Foster, "Alias" by Jeremy Steig, "Pot Belly" by Lou Donaldson, "Time After Time" by Willie Bobo, and "Mercy Mercy Me" by Reuben Wilson. The long-overdue release of an unissued Blue Note session from 1959 – one that features a version of the Jazz Messengers right before Wayne Shorter joined the group, with the mighty Hank Mobley on the quintet lineup on tenor! The Messengers in 1959 and 1960 were really at the top of their game – and here feature the fantastic newcomers, Lee Morgan on trumpet and Bobby Timmons on piano, both of whom were helping drummer Blakey to form a new, evolved version of the sound he'd been crafting with other lineups in previous years – aided here by the rock-solid Jymie Merritt on bass! Before Byrd hooked up with Larry Mizell and started recording his smooth fusion grooves of the mid 70s – on records like Blackbyrd and Street Lady – he recorded this gem, kind of a "lost" album that has Donald working in an open-ended electric sound – one that's clearly inspired by the experiments of Miles Davis, but which has a generally funkier feel overall! Although best known for his solid rhythm work on late 50s hardbop recordings, Chambers breaks out here with a more introspective, more exploratory style on the bass – using the instrument "on top", as a lead solo force in a group with Kenny Burrell on guitar, Hank Jones on piano, and Art Taylor on drums. The sound is surprisingly soulful, and modern yet swinging – in the manner of Oscar Pettiford's best sides of this style. Titles include "Yesterdays", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Confessin", and "The Theme". LP, Vinyl record album

Gerald ClaytonHappening – Live At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Pianist Gerald Clayton live at the Village Vanguard, presented here in two different modes – two tracks in trio formation, with Joe Sanders on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums – the rest with a really wonderful quintet that draws a lot from the work of Logan Richardson on alto and Walter Smith III on tenor! Clayton's piano work has just gotten deeper and more complex over the years – and here, he's a master of moods, especially on the darker side of the spectrum – which can be really balanced in a great way by the hand-in-glove interplay between Richardson and Smith, both players show seem to share that way of swelling up in sound that Gerald brings to the piano. The approach isn't easy to put in words instantly – but we might say that the whole thing has a very resonant quality, something really special and stirring – on titles that include "Envisionings", "Rejuvenation Agenda", "Take The Coltrane", "A Light", "Celia", and "Patience Patients". ✨✧ Nicola ConteOther Directions ... CD
Blue Note (France), 2004. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Incredible work from Nicola Conte – Schema records maestro making his Blue Note debut with this set – and giving the label one of their best new albums of the 21st Century! The record's quite different than Nicola's programmed dancefloor work for Schema – and is much more of an organic jazz-based session – with instrumentation by a wide arrangement of hip European jazzers (including Till Bronner and Rosario Giuliani!), plus sweet vocals from a variety of different singers! The groove is still very much in the Conte/Schema spirit – often in a loping modal approach to jazz, with a strong inspiration from the best European scenes of the late 60s and early 70s. The sound is wonderful – with players from the larger lineup playing in differing groups from track to track – showcasing instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, trombone, tenor, alto, and even a bit of guitar from Nicola himself. Vocalists include Bembe Segue, Lucia Minetti, Cristina Zavalloni, and Till Bronner – and titles include "Sea & Sand", "Nefertiti", "Wanin Moon", "A Time For Spring", "Kind Of Sunshine", "Aphrodite's Dream", "The Dharma Bums", "All Gone", "Le Depart", "The In Between", and "Several Shades Of Dawn". Imagine the best work of Schema or Compost done in an all-organic, all-natural mode – and you've got the beautiful sound of this set! CD

Fantastic work from one of the most overlooked alto talents of all-time! This beautiful CD features tracks from Sonny's 3 rare albums on Imperial – Jazz USA, Go Man, and Plays Cole Porter. The records were all recorded in 1956 – and they feature some of the strongest bop playing to ever come out of LA, total proof that that city wasn't always noodling around with cool jazz during the 50s! Sonny plays alto so well you want to cry – and every note is perfectly placed, with just the right mix of technical skill and warm soulful humanity. Most of this material has only ever been reissued in Japan – and the CD includes wealth of excellent cuts like "If I Had You", "I Love You", "Wailin With Joe", "West Coast Blues", "Criss Cross", "Ham's Blues", and "Blue Friday" – but the whole thing's great! The title's no lie – because the album is one of the shining jewels of Lou Donaldson's legendary funk years for Blue Note – that second period when he returned to the label at the end of the 60s, and really helped redefine the sound of soul jazz at the time! The format here is very much the same as other Donaldson classics from the time – like Hot Dog or Possum Head – in that the tracks are long, open, and plenty darn grooving – locked in some funky rhythms that feature Idris Muhammad on some very heavy drums! Other players are great too – and include Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Melvin Sparks on guitar, and Lonnie Smith on Hammond – all cooking things up nicely on tracks that include "West Indian Daddy", "Donkey Walk", "Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky", and "Hamp's Hump". A pivotal record from Lou Donaldson – one that has him forging out some of his first funky soul jazz sounds, moving from his bop roots, and working with a hip young group that includes Grant Green and John Patton, both of whom he discovered and brought to Blue Note (thanks Lou!) The tracks have a tight jaunty feel – very much like those on Patton's mid 60s sides for Blue Note, with lots of room for each player to solo intently – but still a strong focus on the overall groove of the ensemble. Cover's very nice – and tracks include "Funky Mama", "Spaceman Twist", and "Nice n Greasy". CD features one bonus track too – "People Will Say We're In Love". CD

Great early material from Lou Donaldson – with a hard-hitting bop sound missing from his later work! The tracks are short, raw, and lively – and filled with the kind of pre-hardbop soul that Donaldson was infusing into jazz, along with other players on the material – like Horace Silver on piano, Art Blakey on drums, and Blue Mitchell on trumpet – all of whom make key early appearances here. The material is from rare 10" LPs – originally recorded in the early 50s, but packaged in a full album by Blue Note for the legendary 1500 series! Recorded live at the Cadillac Club in Newark, New Jersey, this set's a perfect document of what a funky lounge gig was like in the era of the organ/tenor combos. Maybe one of the greatest albums ever from trumpeter Kenny Dorham – a set that has him really stretching out as a musician – not just showing off that impeccable sense of tone that marked his important records of the 50s, but also coming up with new ways of phrasing, and a sometimes-unique approach to rhythm as well! The set's about as all-star as you can get for a Blue Note date of the time – and that's really saying a lot – with the mighty Hank Mobley on tenor, whose work here is as important as Dorham's – and the rock-solid rhythm trio of Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – who perfectly echo Kenny's new sense of changes in his music. Bill plays both acoustic and electric guitar – and the latter instrument often has this nice rasp on the edges, and a quality that shimmers with a sense of darkness that really deepens the vibe of the set – some of the same carefully-chosen notes that Frisell's brought to other recent projects, but more pointed and powerful – really set up nicely by the drums and bass, which are superb! Mindblowing work from Robert Glasper – a set that makes us fall in love with his music even more than before – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given that we've loved him for years! Glasper's working here in his collaborative Black Radio format – but at a level that's even more perfected than the initial album of this project – a really groundbreaking blend of live jazz instrumentation and underground soul inspiration – served up by Robert's core quartet, with help from a whole host of wonderful guest singers! Glasper alone is worth the price of admission – Fender Rhodes and piano lines that are completely sublime, in that flowing groove that's only gotten better with age – and the combo also features wicked bass from Derrick Hodge, sax and flute from Casey Benjamin, and some damn funky drums from Mark Colenburg – who proves that you don't need any drum loops or samples to make music this great. The singers are the icing on the cake – a lineup that includes Faith Evans, Dwele, Jill Scott, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Lalah Hathaway, Norah Jones, and others – on titles that include "Calls", "Worries", "I Stand Alone", "What Are We Doing", "Trust", "Yet To Find", "You Own Me", "Somebody Else", "Persevere", and "Let It Ride". Great work from Robert Glasper – one of our favorite new artists on Blue Note in years – a hell of a great piano player, with a fluid groove that just gets better and better with each new record! Glasper has a way of warming us up right away – sliding into a compelling piano line that holds us rapt, and really takes us on a journey – a bit like the best work of Bheki Mseleku back in the 90s, but with an undercurrent of funkier New York modes too! Half the record features Robert in trio format – playing both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes – and the rest of the set moves into "experiment" tracks that bring in Casey Benjamin on saxes, plus some electric bass, and very funky drums from Chris Dave, who also plays on the trio numbers. Mos Def makes a vocal appearance on one track, and Bilal appears on two more – but our favorite grooves are always from Glasper's keyboards, especially his acoustic piano. The album's got an understated cover, but the set more than lives up to the sort of crackling sounds we've been loving from Gogo Penguin in recent years – that UK trio with a way of really remaking the interplay between piano, bass, and drums! If anything, the bass and drums seem a lot more upfront in the mix than on old school piano records – sometimes driving the sound of the group with a very chunky rhythm, sometimes still crafting this more subtle soundshaping – but at a level that really sets the piano free on these long, lyrical runs! Yet the piano can also be pretty darn rhythmic, but in ways that are maybe more cyclical, especially when compared to the drums – all of which makes for a very unique sound on titles that include "Signal In The Noise", "Atomised", "Embers", "Totem", "Kora", "Don't Go", and "F Maj Pixie". An amazing early bop session from Germany! During the 50s, pianist Jutta Hipp cut a number of straighter sides for Blue Note that were recorded in the US – but this first album has her working with German contemporaries like Joki Freund on tenor sax and Emil Mangelsdorff on alto, carving out a dark little batch of tracks with a sharper edge than you'd expect! Although Hipp's the leader, it's the amazing horn interplay that really makes the record shine – as Mangelsdorff and Freund work in unison on many of the intros to the songs, cutting back and forth like a double-edged sword, then breaking out into wonderfully compact solos. About 3 tracks feature Hipp in a trio, but the remaining 5 feature this quintet – and it's just great! Titles include "Cleopatra", "Mon Petit", "What's New", and "Variations". 2015 Blue Note Authorized Dealer pressing – in celebration of Blue Note's 75th Anniversary – and the indie retailers that support them!
