✨✧ Clifford BrownMemorial Album (Blue Note) ... LP
Blue Note, 1953. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
Clifford Brown only recorded a handful of sides for Blue Note – but all of the best ones are included in this excellent album – a full length set that culls together Brown's material from the 10" years, issued as a memorial to his early death in 1956! Side one features Brown with the modernist Gigi Gryce on flute and alto sax – plus Charlie Rouse on tenor, John Lewis on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – a lineup that has a strong sense of soul, balanced with a dose of modernism – on titles that include the classic "Hymn to the Orient" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Easy Living", "Cherokee", "Wail Bait", and "Minor Mood". Side two features an equally sharp group – with Lou Donaldson on some excellent alto, and the great Elmo Hope on piano – on titles that include "Brownie Speaks", "De Dah", "Cookin", "You Go To My Head", and "Carving The Rock". Blue Note, Early 50s. Very Good ... $29.99
Volume 2 of a pair of LPs that brought together Miles Davis' early recordings for Blue Note – some excellent sessions recorded in 1952, 1953, and 1954, featuring Miles' young trumpet blowing in a wonderful mix of cool, bop, lyrical, and modern jazz. The style's a bit rougher than later years, but in a good way – one that shows that Miles' ideas were not accidents, or studio magic, but the brilliant expressions of a musician who was years ahead of his time. Titles include "Weirdo", "Take Off", "Ray's Idea", "Tempus Fugit (alt)", "The Leap", and "Wouldn'You". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note (Japan), 2019. New Copy ... $29.99
A really fantastic 80th birthday tribute to Blue Note Records – one that has a host of younger Japanese jazz musicians banding together to deliver their own versions of Blue Note classics from back in the day! The lineup is wonderful, and very adept at changing up from track to track – Jun Miyakwawa on Hammond and piano, Takuya Kuroda on trumpet, Akihiro Nishiguchi on tenor, May Inoue on guitar, Ai Kuwabara on piano, Ryuta Tsunoda on bass, and both Tomo Kanno and Shun Ishiwaka on drums – players who not only understand the spirit of the music, but also very much rise with each other in a sense of fresh arrangements that moves the record way past just a sleepy remake of the past! Instead, we hear plenty of currents of the more contemporary Tokyo scene – on titles that include "Maiden Voyage", "Feel Like Makin Love", "Cleopatra's Dream", "Midnight Blue", "Song For My Father", "Sidewinder", and "Night In Tunisia". Ike QuebecComplete Blue Note 45 Sessions Of Ike Quebec (Mosaic) ... CD
Blue Note/Mosaic, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 2CDs ... $59.99
The "flipside" of Ike Quebec's legendary run of albums for Blue Note – a huge set of material recorded only as 45 singles during his same stretch at the label! Although Quebec's work as a soulful tenorist has been well documented and reissued over the years on albums like Blue & Sentimental and Heavy Soul, Ike also cut a fair number of singles aimed at the jukebox and radio crowds of the time – tunes that were more in the gutsy tenor and organ mode recorded by labels like Prestige or Chess, and which never made it onto any of the full-length sets for Blue Note! This great little package brings together all of Ike's 26 tracks recorded for 45s in the late 50s and early 60s – material that features organ on most numbers, played by either Ike Quebec, Sir Charles Thompson, or the enigmatic Edwin Swanston. Quebec's tone and phrasing is similar to his Blue Note LP work of the period, but there's also a more relaxed, and more punctuated feel to these recordings – one that's not as rough or raw as other jukebox tenor stars of the time, but which still steps out past the usual Blue Note poise, especially on the original numbers. Some tracks were briefly issued on the 80s collection With A Song In My Heart, and in a Mosaic box – but this is the first proper Blue Note album of the material. Titles include "Buzzard Lope", "Zonky", "Blue Monday", "Later For The Rock", "Dear John", "Blue Friday", "Ill Wind", "Mardis Gras", "Everything Happens To Me", "Me N Mabe", "All The Way", "Intermezzo", "All Of Me", and "Imagination". Christian Scott Atunde AdjuahAxiom – Live At The Blue Note ... LP
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... About November 6, 2020
A fantastic chapter in the continuing evolution of trumpeter Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – a set recorded at the Blue Note in New York, just days before the city had to shut down in 2020 – and a record that maybe carries with it some of the urgency of that moment! Scott's studio records in recent years have really blown us away – but it's maybe even more amazing here to hear him working with the group in this frenzy of colors, tones, and rhythms! In addition to conventional trumpet, Christian blows a reverse flugelhorn, which has an amazing sound – and his group features really intense work on drums from Cory Fonville, whose efforts on the kit seem to set everyone else on fire – a lineup taht features Lawrence Fields on piano and Rhodes, Kris Funn on bass, Weedie Braimah on percussion, and Elena Pinderhughes on flute. The music is tremendous – full of power, life, and message – on titles that include "Diaspora", "The Last Chieftain", "X Adjuah", "Huntress", "Incarnation", "Songs She Never Heard", "Guinnevere", and "Sunrise In Beijing". Victor (Japan), 2020. New Copy ... $23.99
We've loved saxophonist Sadao Watanabe for many years, through many different styles, and he's still sounding wonderful after all his decades in music – playing live in a laidback quartet setting, in a performance that's very heavy on his own compositions too! The backing is top-shelf, but nicely understated – Russell Ferrante on piano, John Patitucci on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums – moving with a gentle swing, but really letting Sadao take the lead on alto sax – blowing soulful, well-crafted solos of the sort that you'd maybe be more likely to hear on this sort of session from a tenor. Titles include "Warm Days Ahead", "Butterfly", "Plum Island", "Tembea", "Waiting Song", and "Early Spring". CD

VariousBlue Note Live At The Roxy ... LP
Blue Note, 1976. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $4.99
An overlooked gem from Blue Note – a special live performance that brings together some of the label's funkiest and most soulful artists of the 70s! The set's somewhat unusual for Blue Note at the time – especially given the label's increasingly studio-driven approach to jazz, with projects by the Mizell Brothers and others – yet given that bent, the whole thing's a great illustration of the vibrancy of all these artists always from the studio – playing live and extremely funky! As the title implies, the set was recorded live at the Roxy in LA – with players who include Donald Byrd, Ronnie Laws, Gene Harris, Bobby Hutcherson, and Alphonse Mouzon – all coming together in warm unity to show that the spacious sounds of Blue Note could also be crafted in a live setting, and not just under closely-watched studio help arrangers and producers. Carmen McRae sings on a number of tracks, and the album overall does a good job of presenting the material in concert-like setting – and some of the longer tracks feature some mighty nice jamming solos. Titles include "New York City", "Without A Reason", and "Just Like The Sun" by Alphonse Mouzon; "Them There Eyes", "Music" and "Paint Your Pretty Picture" by Carmen McRae; "Always There", "Captain Midnight", and "Night Breeze" by Ronnie Laws; "Blue Note 76" by Blue Note All-Stars; and "Places & Spaces" and "Dominoes" by Donald Byrd – both oddly recorded at Central Park! Blue Note, 2020. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 17.99
The sound of Blue Note Records – reimagined, but by a younger British group of musicians who don't record for the label at all! The sound here is more like recent work on Brownswood, A22, or Impulse Records – as the collection features lots of great contributions from artists who are really reinventing the sound of jazz – not in cheapo remix ways, or styles that are gimmicky – but modes that are deeply committed to the spirit of older music, yet expressing things in ways that are groundbreaking and completely unique! There's an equal balance of electric and acoustic elements here, and plenty of strong jazz solos throughout – very different than some of the Blue Note projects of this sort from previous decades. Titles include "Montara" by Blue Lab Beats, "Speak No Evil" by Emma Jean Thackray, "Wind Parade" by Jordan Rakel, "Galaxy" by Alfa Mist, "Search For Peace" by Ishmael Ensemble, "A Shade Of Jade" by Nubya Garcia, "Prints Tie" by Shabaka Hutchings, "Footprints" by Ezra Collective, "Watermelon Man" by Poppy Ajudha, "Illusion" by Skinny Pelembe, "I'll Never Stop Loving You" by Yazmin Lacey, "Etcetera" by Steam Down, and "Maiden Voyage" by Mr Jukes. Jazzman (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 28.98
A great look at a sometimes-forgotten side of the legendary Blue Note Records label – the company's strong wave of spiritual jazz material recorded during the 60s and early 70s – extremely fine music that's often eclipsed next to the company's better-known hardbop and funky jazz! As the 60s moved on, Blue Note became an even more open-minded label than before – and not only gave some of its key players the chance to stretch out and really spread their wings – but also brought some younger talents into the mix, who really expanded the vision of the Blue Note sound. Some of the tracks here are from the middle of the decade – and reflect more of the growing interest in modal jazz spurred on by Coltrane, Miles Davis, and others – while some of the later tracks are surprisingly righteous, sometimes political moments from players who would have sounded very different just a few years before. The package is done with the same amazing care and fantastic set list as previous Spiritual Jazz collections from Jazzman – and titles on this first volume include "Verse" by Bobby Hutcherson, "Footprints" by Wayne Shorter, "At This Point In Time" by Elvin Jones, "The Rain" by Eddie Gale, "Poinsettia" by Andrew Hill, "Searchin The Trane" by Bobby Hutcherson, "The Phantom" by Duke Pearson, and "Assunta" by Freddie Hubbard. Wicked early work from Milt Jackson – a record that's got a lot more of an edge than some of his later work with the Modern Jazz Quartet – a near-perfect modernist bop sound that's every bit the best side of Blue Note in the early 50s! The package brings together material from a few different sessions – some originally on 10" LPs – and the core of the material features Jackson in the company of pianist Thelonious Monk, on some tracks that also feature Sahib Shihab on alto sax! John Lewis plays piano on another batch of tracks that are essentially the early MJQ lineup, but with Lou Donaldson on alto too – so they swing with a bit more soul than you might expect. The group features Mobley on tenor, John Jenkins on alto, and Donald Byrd on trumpet – plus a crackling rhythm group with Bobby Timmons, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones. It's great to hear Timmons and Ware together, especially as both of them were at the height of their powers at this point in their careers – and Jenkins' soulful alto work is a key part of the set, and makes us wish he'd gotten in the studio more after this time. The setting here is a really warm and lyrical one – as Mobley's playing with Horace Silver on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, Art Blakey on drums, and the great Art Farmer on trumpet – making one of his rare (and appreciated!) Blue Note appearances on the set! The tracks have a good mixture of hardbop and more lyrical overtones – in a manner that's similar to Silver's work, but with a little more gutbucket soloing on tenor from Mobley. Blue Note, 1956/1957. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The rarest of all the Sonny Rollins Blue Note sessions – and possibly the best! The record captures Rollins at a key turning point – emerging from his firey bop years, moving into a much more complicated, introspective tenor style that was a perfect showcase for his developing genius for improvisation. He's playing here in a quintet with Wynton Kelly, Donald Byrd, Gene Ramey, and Max Roach – but as with all Rollins Blue Note sessions, his tenor is the dominant force. Titles include "Bluesnote", "Plain Jane", "How Are Things In Gocca Morra", and "Decision". As classic as it comes for late 50s Blue Note – and a key meeting between Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk! The group on the set features Rollins and Monk with JJ Johnson, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey – all of whom push things more in the direction of Blue Note's sound of the time, then Monk's own recordings of the period for Riverside. But the contrast of modes makes for a really startling sound – one that has Monk "monking" it up next to the straighter rhythm section, and bringing out some more modern tones in Rollins' tenor work, titles include "Why Don't I", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", "Misterioso", and "Reflections". Amy had a deep gutsy sound that was similar to other Texas tenors coming out of the state during the postwar years – and initially, his first recordings in LA were done in a spirited soul jazz mode – often teaming with organist Paul Bryant, in loose and free albums that had the feel of some of the east coast sides cut for Prestige at the time. As the early 60s wore on, though, Amy really opened up – and started working with some of the hipper younger players of the LA scene, to shift his groove from straight soul jazz into more of a modally-inspired sound. The 6 albums on this set document this incredible transformation – already tremendous at the start, but even more revolutionary as Amy moved onto work with players that included Carmell Jones, Bobby Hutcherson, Frank Strazzeri, Jimmy Bond, Jack Wilson, and Roy Ayers. Amy's never gotten his due on the reissue market before, and although one of these albums has seen the light of day on CD, most of the other material is showing up here for the first time on reissue – making the limited numbered set even more important than most of the other Mosaic sets! Tremendous work all the way through – and a release that's bound to finally get Amy the attention he deserves. 36 tracks in all – with a great set of notes! CD
(Out of print, limited to 5,000 numbered copies – in great shape!)

Great great stuff – and for some folks, THE album by Kenny Burrell! This classic set features the guitarist in a quintet with Stanley Turrentine on tenor, Major Holly on bass, Bill English on drums, and the great Ray Barretto on conga – a really great lineup that sparkles with soulful imagination, and moves with a very rhythmic groove – thanks to Ray's extra percussion contribution on the bottom! Burrell's guitar somehow seems a bit harder and grittier than ever – and titles include the classic groover "Chittlins Con Carne", an early jazz dance classic – plus "Soul Lament", "Wavy Gravy", and "Mule". Grant GreenSunday Mornin' (180 gram pressing red, white & blue marbled vinyl pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Slow Down Sounds, 1961. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
A beautiful little session from one of the greatest guitarists ever! The album's part of Blue Note's tendency to "churchify" Grant Green on some albums – giving his guitar a gospelly groove that has some nicely soulful connotations – but it's also a record that's maybe the strongest of that bunch, as it's got this approach that's loose and open – and which has this fantastic flow that's aided by the piano of Kenny Drew! Drew is the equal star on this set – and the longer tunes on the record really allow for plenty of open solo space – and the whole thing shines with Drew's piano matching lines with Green's strung-out single-note solos. The groove is pretty hard, and the recording quality keeps the whole thing nice and lively – thanks also to work from Ben Tucker on bass and Ben Dixon on drums. Titles include "Sunday Mornin", "Come Sunrise", "Exodus", and "Freedom March". LP, Vinyl record album

Moody late night tenor musings by one of Blue Note's greatest talents of the early 60s! The album's a classic through and through – and the tenor of the mighty Ike Quebec is set up nicely in a solid quartet with Grant Green on guitar, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. There's no piano on the album, which really opens things up a lot, and lets the guitar/tenor lines get all snakey and introspective – with just the right dose of "blue" and "sentimental" to sweeten things up without getting all gooey! A seminal bit of Ike Quebec – and proof that he was one of Blue Note's greatest discoveries ever! Titles include "Minor Impulse", "Blues For Charlie", and "Like". CD

Stanley Turrentine with the Three SoundsBlue Hour – The Complete Sessions ... CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used 2 CDs ... $13.99
During the early 60s, Blue Note wisely cut a number of sessions that took advantage of their soulful in-house rhythm trio The Three Sounds. The group recorded more than a few successful albums under their own name – but they also did a few great records that feature them backing up a more famous soloist. Such is the case with this one, in which Gene Harris and crew back up Stanley Turrentine for a beautifully mellow set of late nite tracks, played with an easy rolling groove missing from some of Turrentine's other, more full-on sessions at the time. At the time, Blue Note recorded enough material for 2 albums – but only one was ever issued in the US (although a second has recently come out from Japan.) Now, all the tracks are combined on a very nice 2CD set that includes all the original material – with tracks that include "Alone Together", "There Is No Greater Love", "Blue Hour", "I Want A Little Girl", and "Blue Riff". Blue Note (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $29.99
Two legendary Japanese DJs take on the Blue Note catalog – and come up with some amazing results in the process! Both DJ Krush and Muro serve up a non-stop mix in this collection – one each per disc – and the music is really transformed by their magical talents on the decks, at a level that takes us back to the sorts of cool projects that Japanese Blue Note was handling at the start of the century – when they were really inviting some younger talents to breathe new life into their catalog! Neither Muro nor Krush are spring chickens, but they definitely give a strong 21st Century vibe to this music – really expanding on a range of tracks that are mostly pulled from the late 60s/early 70s run of Blue Note. Krush mixes tunes that include "Feeling You Feeling Me Too" by Gene Harris, "Before You Leave" by Alphonse Mouzon, "I'm On My Way" by Candido, "Oblighetto" by Jack McDuff, "Move Your Hand" by Lonnie Smith, "Blue Juice" by Jimmy McGriff, "Mestizo Eyes" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Little Green Apples" by Monk Higgins, and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" by Lou Donaldson – and Muro mixes up tunes that include "Acid Pot Or Pills" by Horace Silver, "Classic Funke" by Jack McDuff, "New York Times" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Trying Hard To Look Inside" by Waters, "Cristo Redentor (part 2)" by Gene Harris, "Down Here On The Ground" by Grant Green, "Summer Song" by Ronnie Foster, "Alias" by Jeremy Steig, "Pot Belly" by Lou Donaldson, "Time After Time" by Willie Bobo, and "Mercy Mercy Me" by Reuben Wilson. You know, we can remember a time when Michael Cuscuna used to say that Grant Green's late sessions for Blue Note were just a bunch of throwaway funk records. Now, though, the label seems to be doing everything it can to get behind Green's late 60s/early 70s jazz output – and this compilation of rare breakbeat tracks is total proof of that! The set's got 6 funky guitar groovers, including Grant's version of James Brown's "Ain't It Funky Now", plus "The Final Comedown", "Ease Back", "Sookie Sookie", and "Cataloupe Woman". CD

Lyrical beauty from the great Blue Mitchell – a really soulful set of tunes that has him exploring all the lessons he learned from Horace Silver! A young Chick Corea is on the set on piano, shading the tunes with some slightly Latin touches – and fitting in surprisingly well with a quintet lineup that also includes Junior Cook on tenor, Gene Taylor on bass, and Al Foster on drums. The set's excellent throughout, and includes some great material like "Alone, Alone, and Alone" (written by a young Terumasa Hino), "March On Selma", and "Samba De Stacy". A tough one to find, and a real high point in mid 60's jazz! LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest Donald Byrd albums ever – a smoking live performance spread out over two different records – all with some of the tightest, most grooving work that Byrd ever recorded in his early years on Blue Note! Part of the strength of the set is the group – as Don's trumpet is alongside the brilliant baritone of Pepper Adams – who plays with the deftness of a tenor, but with a richer, fuller sound – and the group also includes the great Duke Pearson on piano, who has this way of comping out tunes that are soulful, but richly lyrical too. The group's completed by Lex Humphries on drums and Laymon Jackson on bass – and titles on this second volume include a stunning long version of Pearson's "Jeanine", plus the tracks "Pure D. Beautiful work from reedman George Adams – a set that has him blowing some great tenor, plus a bit of flute and soprano sax too – on a set of laidback tracks served up with a great quartet! George's horn is definitely the star attraction here – but the combo's got just the right sort of sensitive swing to bring out his best – Hugh Lawson on piano, Sirone on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – all sparking their own sense of creativity throughout, yet never overwhelming George's lead. A few tunes pick up a great groove, which leads to some especially wonderful lines from Adams – those bolder moments that we love from the early years, recast here in the space of a familiar song – on titles that include "Cry Me A River", "Moon River", "A Nightingale Sang In Berkely Square", "Going Home", and "Bridge Over Troubled Water". A fantastic album from trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire – a set that really kicks his career up to the next level, and which is easily the most powerful record he's ever given us! The music finds Ambrose in many moods, all of them righteous – sometimes blowing hard and fierce in a small combo, sometimes issuing out more personal statements in a more stripped-down setting – working with players that include Harish Raghavan on bass, Justin Brown on drums, and Sam Harris on piano – plus vocalist Genevieve Artadi on one especially beautiful number that features Akinmusire on Fender Rhodes! We've loved the music of Ambrose for many years – and this is one of those faith-rewarding sets that always makes it so wonderful to follow the career of any key jazz musician – as we hope you'll also find on titles that include "Roy", "4623", "Moon", "Tide Of Hyacinth", "Cynical Sideliners", and "Mr Roscoe". One of the coolest records in years from the legendary Tony Allen – and that's saying a lot, given that his legacy includes famous work as a drummer with Fela Kuti, and a much more recent run of very experimental recordings! This set has Tony soaring out on Blue Note – and working with more of the jazz currents you'd expect from the label – while still, in the Allen legacy, really going for something fresh and unique – as spontaneously creative as it is outright funky! There's definitely some Afro Funk rhythms on the album, but there's also a fuller brace of horns, dedicated to painting sound in rich colors and tones – alongside riffing guitar, organ and keyboard lines, and Tony's own mighty drums – which keep things moving in a straight ahead way, while also filling in the rhythms with wonderfully complicated bits too. The album's as rich and beautiful as you might hope – with titles that include "Cool Cats", "On Fire", "Wolf Eats Wolf", "Life Is Beautiful", "Ewajo", "Moody Boy", "Bad Roads", and "Woro Dance". A landmark recording by a whole new chapter in Art Blakey's career! During the early 60s, Blakey expanded the Jazz Messengers from a quintet to an incredibly tight sextet – adding in the trombone of Curtis Fuller for an extra-punched up frontline that also included Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Wayne Shorter on tenor, who had returned to the group after a short departure. The band was augmented by the wonderfully lyrical and soulful piano of a young Cedar Walton – who brought a strong degree of sophistication, and who was a perfect interpreter of Shorter's rich writing talents. Maybe one of the most famous records ever from master drummer Art Blakey – in part because of the cover, which has come to stand for the Blue Note aesthetic of the 60s! But despite that famous image, the music is more than worthy of attention – as the group features that unusual sextet lineup of the Jazz Messengers that made some amazing sounds in the mid 60s – Blakey on drums, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Cedar Walton on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass! Morgan and Shorter are really growing and pushing themselves in different ways than their work with Blakey at the start of the 60s – and the addition of Fuller, and especially Walton, really gives the group this rounded warmth that shows a new level of maturity – a quality that comes through both in the playing, and the writing – as songs are all originals by Walton, Fuller, Morgan, and Shorter. A landmark album that had one of the best versions of the Jazz Messengers taking a big step forward – thanks to some increased songwriting by the group's young tenor genius – Wayne Shorter! Shorter's tunes take up all of the second half of the record, and all of them have gone onto become classics – "Giantis", "Sleeping Dancer Sleep On", and "Noise In The Attic" – all tunes that hint at the modernism that was to come in Wayne's music, and which especially seem to push his tenor and the trumpet of Lee Morgan into the range of more mature colors and tones that would grace their music as the 60s moved on. Meanwhile, there's a rock-solid rhythm drive at the core – Art Blakey on drums, Jymie Merritt on bass, and the great Bobby Timmons on piano – still making a strong contribution to the group. Lee Morgan wrote the nine minute tune "Johnny's Blue" on side one – which also includes a beautiful version of "Like Someone In Love" – a masterpiece in soulful lyricism! LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, recording in the very familiar territory of the Birdland nightclub – in a format that was handled previously by the Blue Note label, but maybe never with a lineup this great! The performance features the sublime frontline trio of Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, and Bobby Timmons on piano – all players that are their youthful best, and completely on fire with creative imagination under Blakey's leadership – the start of a great run for all of them as solo stars too. The tracks are long, and even if the tunes are sometimes familiar, the performances are spectacular – that special Jazz Messengers energy that makes records like this so great. ✨✧ Art BlakeyMoanin' ... LP
Blue Note, 1958. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
One of Art Blakey's first true moments of genius! This transitional version of the Jazz Messengers included two parts – Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons – of the holy Morgan/Shorter/Timmons trilogy, and it's also got the added bonus of Benny Golson on tenor, who was at the height of his power at this point. The record really shines in ways that few Blakey albums shone since his days with Horace Silver – in that it's a forum for fresh new writing, most importantly Golson's landmark compositions "Blues March" and "Along Came Betty", and Timmons' instant classic "Moanin". The whole album's wonderful, though, and Golson's edgey modernism adds a strong dimension to the group's usual soulful romping groove! (And in fact, as a tribute to the group's success, the album was initially named Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but quickly retitled Moanin in this version, after the big hit single!) Flavio BoltroRoad Runner ... CD
Blue Note (France), 1999. Used ... $8.99
Great stuff from one of the new European "funky young lions" of Blue Note France! Italian trumpeter Flavio Boltro lays down a killer set of modern funk grooves here – clearly played with one foot in the past, but the other firmly in a present that's filled with tight snapping drum breaks and round warm basslines. The record has a very strong 70s feel to it, but with a style that's hard to place – and which is more a combination of a lot of different elements than it is that of any one player. There's lots of nice keyboard riffing away under Boltro's horn, and the band has a tight funky feel in the manner of some of the best Italian combos from the golden days of the early 90s acid jazz boom. Titles include "Duo", "Little Room", "Matteo", "Hey Papa!", "Vucciria", and "Tea In The Sahara". CD

Grover Washington Jr on Blue Note – but sounding really great here in the company of guitarist Kenny Burrell – very much back to the more basic reed work of his roots, and away from some of the smoother settings of his bigger dates from a few years before! Kenny's well-crafted guitar lines really direct the set – spinning out with energy and soul, and shaping the sound in tones that work especially well with Washington's soprano sax lines. The rest of the group features Ron Carter on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Ralph MacDonald on percussion – and titles include "Togethering", "Daydream", "Sails Of Your Soul", "Soulero", and "What Am I Here For". Blue Note, 1976. Very Good ... $11.99
Donald Byrd's last Blue Note album with fusion genius Larry Mizell – and a doozy! The record builds off the style of previous Byrd/Mizell outings – like Places & Spaces, Street Lady, and Black Byrd – mixing together a similar blend of heavy rhythms, keyboards, and sweet funky trumpet licks from Donald. The sound here's a bit tighter than on some of the previous records – showing Mizell as an emerging soul genius, soon to click big on some very important R&B outings of the late 70s. Donald's working with a great group – and gets help from the likes of Patrice Rushen, Gary Bartz, David T. Walker, and Alphonze Mouzon – all of whom fit in with the funky program to really kick out some nice grooves! Titles include "Return Of the King", "Dance Band", "Wild Life", "Science Funktion", and "Onward Til Morning". LP, Vinyl record album

A Donald Byrd treasure – and an album that was almost left in the vaults by Blue Note, until they briefly released it at the end of the 70s! The cover and title are a bit unfamiliar, but the music is right up there with Byrd's classic sessions with baritonist Pepper Adams – a great player here, with a deftness on his horn that's incredible – matching all the sharp changes and soulful undercurrents of Byrd's sparkling trumpet! There's a nice hard sound to the whole thing – almost the raw power of the pair's albums for the Warwick label – and as with those, Herbie Hancock is on piano – giving the whole thing an excellent soul jazz groove that really kicks the main soloists into action! Titles include "Great God", "I'm An Old Cowhand", "That's All", "You're Next", and "Chant". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note (Japan), 1972. Used ... $19.99
Sweet electric funk – in a very trippy style, and very different than the later funky fusion from trumpeter Donald Byrd! Before Byrd hooked up with Larry Mizell and started recording his smooth fusion grooves of the mid 70s – on records like Blackbyrd and Street Lady – he recorded this gem, kind of a "lost" album that has Donald working in an open-ended electric sound – one that's clearly inspired by the experiments of Miles Davis, but which has a generally funkier feel overall! The tracks are very long – with lots of spiraling keyboard and trumpet solos – and the hip players on the set include Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, David T Walker on guitar, Harold Land on tenor, and Joe Sample on organ – a very cool combo that's got a cross between The Crusaders and the Hutcherson/Land quintet! We love the tracks on this set – especially "The Emperor" and "The Little Rasti", which are both over 15 minutes long, and have a haunting spacey sound that's a departure from Donald's usual work! CD

✨✧ Donald ByrdMustang! (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1966. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of Donald Byrd's most fantastic records for Blue Note – and one of three gems that he recorded with the great Sonny Red on alto sax! Byrd and Red work magnificently together – and the two of them play with a tightness and funkiness that's missing from a lot of their other records as leaders – this really sharp edge that makes Sonny sound even better than ever, and a slight funkiness in Byrd's trumpet – which really seems to point the way towards his groove of the 70s! Hank Mobley joins the group on tenor, Walter Booker is on bass, McCoy Tyner's on piano, and Freddie Waits is on drums – and the groove is tight and funky, with a mix of hard bop soloing and funkier Blue Note rhythm playing. Red burns throughout, especially on his own "Mustang", and on the cut "Dixie Lee". Other tracks include "Fly Little Bird Fly", "On The Trail", and "I'm So Excited By You". Plus, this CD reissue also includes 2 non-LP bonus cuts – "Gingerbread Boy" and "I'm So Excited By You". CD

Donald ByrdNew Perspective ... LP
Blue Note, 1963. Very Good ... $19.99
A classic album that mixes trumpet and voices in a swirling soulful sound that worked very well for Byrd's career! Byrd's sparkling trumpet fronts a tight septet that includes Hank Mobley, Herbie Hancock, and Kenny Burrell – and which is backed by arrangements by Coleridge Perkinson and Duke Pearson. The sound is beautiful and spiritual, with a sound that mixes Blue Note hardbop with a style that would later show up on labels like Strata East, or in the experiments of Max Roach and Billy Harper. The tracks are long and moody, and the vocal group never gets in the way, but instead backs Byrd in a way that lets him hit new heights, and which gives him a stronger sense of voice. Includes the classic "Christo Redentor", plus "Chant", "The Black Disciple", and "Elijah". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1975. New Copy ... $9.99 11.98
An incredible record that was one of the highest points of Donald Byrd's career! The album's the third one he cut with producer/arranger Larry Mizell – and of all Byrd's work with Mizell, this one's the funkiest, the tightest, the most soulful, and the most perfectly realized vision of the smooth jazz funk sound that the team were aiming at. Every track is a winner – and the album glides along with a slippery sinewy groove, never pausing for a weak moment or a misplaced note, shimmering with pride in its own genius. Byrd's trumpet soars over the top, banking gracefully over waves of funky drums, spacey keyboards, and extremely well-placed vocals – all brought together perfectly by Mizell, with a tightly fused style that few people have ever been able to match in the studio since! Tracks include "Change (Makes You Want To Hustle)", "Dominoes", "Wind Parade", "Places & Spaces", and "Night Whistler". CD

A real rarity in West Coast jazz – originally issued as a very obscure Blue Note session recorded on the west coast in the mid 50s – released as a "blindfold test" under the supervision of Leonard Feather, but featuring some of Blue Note's only west coast jazz sessions of the 50s! The musicians on the original record were not named – probably because of contractual reasons – but artists include Conte Candoli, Jimmy Giuffre, Charlie Mariano, Howard Roberts, Marty Paich, and others – all coming together with a fresh, clean sound that's very much in the spirit of some of the best west coast work for labels like Pacific Jazz or Capitol at the time! This Fresh Sounds gatefold reissue includes both of the original 10" albums on one 12" LP – and titles include "Santa Anita", "Culver City", "Burbank Bounce", "Arcadia", "Here's Pete", "Santa Monica", and "Blindfold Test No 1". A cool little set from pianist Barbara Carroll – a player who got her start in the New York scene of the 50s, and served up some excellent work in later years – but who also comes across surprisingly well in this overlooked 70s session for Blue Note! The album's not nearly as electric as others on the label at the time – and instead, Carroll really demonstrates her warm touch on acoustic piano – working with just a bit of bass from Chuck Domanico and drums from Colin Bailey – but often driving the rhythms herself, with her own fluid work on piano! The set also features guest guitar from Dennis Budimir on one track – and titles include "Baubles Bangles & Beads", "Blues For Artie", "At Seventeen", "In Some Other World", and "It Never Entered My Mind". One of the most legendary albums on Blue Note – or maybe THE most legendary albums on Blue Note – a stunning session that shows what the label was capable of when it was really hitting on all burners – from the lineup to the music to the production – and even the classic cover art on the front! The album's a crowning achievement for pianist Sonny Clark – a player who'd already brought greatness to the world before the record, but really knocks it out of the park during the session – leading a razor sharp lineup that includes Art Farmer on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all coming together with some magic in the studio, crafting a sound that forever put Blue Note on the map! Tracks are long, open-ended, and almost effortlessly soulful – and titles include Clark's classics "Cool Struttin" and "Blue Minor", plus versions of "Sippin At Bells" and "Deep Night". Blue Note, 1957/1959. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Beautiful hardbop – and one of Sonny Clark's best albums! The My Conception session was originally recorded in 1959, when Clark was at the height of his powers – but it was never issued until 1980, and even then, only in Japan, where it soon went out of print. The set's got Clark at his most lyrical – playing with a lot of hardbop fire, but also some touches of Horace Silver soulfulness, a perfect match for session-mates Donald Byrd and Hank Mobley. Mobley's in particularly fine form at this point, and the whole set's a real winner – even more so since it's paired here with another lost session, one from 1957 that features Clifford Jordan on tenor and Kenny Burrell on guitar. There's a total of 9 brilliantly remastered tracks on the CD – and the set's one of the best bunch of tracks we've ever heard from the great lost piano talent of Sonny Clark. The CD reissues a previous Japanese-only set of unreleased material – called Sonny Clark Quintets – but some of the tracks have since come out on other CDs. 2 tracks – "Royal Flush" and "Lover" – feature Clark with a group that includes Art Farmer and Jackie McLean, recorded in 1957. The other 3 tracks – "Minor Meeting", "Eastern Incident", and "Little Sonny" – are from a 1958 session that was cut with Clifford Jordan and Kenny Burrell. Both sets of tracks are great – and although Clark recorded some of these tunes in other versions, the quality on this CD's still extremely high, and is proof that Clark was one of Blue Note's greatest players, worthy of all the extra sessions that were cut in the old days! Pianist Gerald Clayton live at the Village Vanguard, presented here in two different modes – two tracks in trio formation, with Joe Sanders on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums – the rest with a really wonderful quintet that draws a lot from the work of Logan Richardson on alto and Walter Smith III on tenor! Clayton's piano work has just gotten deeper and more complex over the years – and here, he's a master of moods, especially on the darker side of the spectrum – which can be really balanced in a great way by the hand-in-glove interplay between Richardson and Smith, both players show seem to share that way of swelling up in sound that Gerald brings to the piano. The approach isn't easy to put in words instantly – but we might say that the whole thing has a very resonant quality, something really special and stirring – on titles that include "Envisionings", "Rejuvenation Agenda", "Take The Coltrane", "A Light", "Celia", and "Patience Patients".
