LP, Vinyl record album

70s work from Evans, caught not in his typical solo or trio setting, but in an all star quintet that recalls his excellent Interplay sides. Evans is joined by Harold Land, Kenny Burrell, Ray Brown and Philly Joe Jones who offset Evans' contemplative approach beautifully here. 5 numbers in all, including 'Sweet Dulcinea", "Martina", "Second Time Around", "A Child Is Born" and "Bass Face".  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

MPS, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
Fantastic stuff – and one of our favorite lost sessions from the 70s! The album's a completely unique work by pianist Bill Evans album – one that features him playing both electric and acoustic piano over stunning arrangements by Claus Ogerman! The sound is indescribably beautiful, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Debut/Fantasy, 1964. Very Good+
Charles Mingus caught live is a totally different experience from Mingus in the studio – as this crack album from 1964 will testify! The album features a stripped-down quartet that includes Clifford Jordan on tenor, Jane Getz on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums – plus a guest ... LP, Vinyl record album
West Side Highway
Fantasy, 1977. Very Good+
Full funky work from the great Stanley Turrentine – an album that has him blowing beautifully over larger backings arranged and conducted by Claus Ogerman! Claus is a bit more fluid here than usual – still using a fairly orchestral approach to the record, but also bringing in some of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1955. Very Good
One of the best records ever by this unique bop trumpeter – and one that catches him with a strong comeback group that includes Chicagoans Ira Sullivan on trumpet and tenor, Vic Sproles on bass, and Norman Simmons on piano. Roy Haynes rounds out the group on drums – giving the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Debut/Fantasy, Mid 50s. Very Good
Seminal early work from Charles Mingus – a session that really shows him beginning to work in tightly arranged, deeply resonant styles – pushing much more deeply towards the brilliance of the late 50s! The set was originally issued on Debut, and was recorded with a great lineup that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader Quintet
Fantasy, Late 50s. Very Good-
A great little Latin session from Cal – recorded with extra percussion from Benny Velarde and Luis Miranda, plus rhythm from the Duran brothers, Manuel (piano) and Carlos (bass). The groove's nice and heavy, pretty driving on most cuts, a perfect foil for Cal's jazzy vibes. Titles include ... LP, Vinyl record album
Here 'Tis
Blue Note, 1961. Very Good
Classic 60s soul jazz from Lou Donaldson – and one of the first albums that has him working with Grant Green on guitar and Baby Face Willette on organ! Both players were discovered by Lou and brought to New York for Blue Note – a move that not only helped give the Donaldson sound a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Truckin & Trakin
Beehive, 1984. Sealed
An overlooked gem from pianist Junior Mance – and maybe one of the most old school records he cut in the 80s! The set's a no-nonsense, soul-drenched session that maybe feels more like Prestige Records' soul jazz years than you might expect, given the date – with Mance on piano in a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ascension (Version 1)
Impulse, 1965. Very Good Gatefold
This is the rare first take of Ascension, and it differs greatly from the second take, which is the more widely available one. It's designated by the fact that the recording doesn't say "Version II" on the runoff groove. One of the freest, most exploratory albums ever recorded by ... LP, Vinyl record album
Time Is Now!
Tribe, 1973. Very Good+
One of the more "out" sessions on the legendary Tribe label from Detroit – and one that features many of the label's great players, like Wendell Harrison, Marcus Belgrave, Charles Moore, and Ranelin himself. The tracks are long and progressive, with distinct political overtones ... LP, Vinyl record album

BYG/Actuel (France), 1969. Very Good- Gatefold
Excellent work from trombonist Grachan Moncur III – famous for his 60s work on Blue Note and with Archie Shepp, sounding as great here as he did on those recordings! The session features Moncur hitting an Archie Shepp-ish, spiritual vein in his playing – recorded in Paris with a group ... LP, Vinyl record album
