Choi Sun Bae/Junji Hirose/Motoharu Yoshizawa/Kim Dae HwanArirang Fantasy ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 1995. New Copy ... $9.99
A fantastic set of improvised material from the Japanese scene of the mid 90s – a performance that features visiting trumpeter Choi Sun Bae working with Junji Hirose on tenor and soprano, Motoharu Yoshizawa on electric five string bass, and Kim Dae Hwan on percussion! These three players may not be as well known to American audiences, but they sound wonderful next to Bae's incredible sounds on the trumpet – notes that have a range of shaping and inflection that matches the energy of Wadada Leo Smith at his best, but which also have a very individual character too. Hirose matches Choi for moodiness, but also keeps a bit more down to earth – creating a nice balance – and titles include "Korea Fantasy", "Remember Bird", "Blue Sky", "The Stream Of Time", and "Airang Fantasy". Heaven & EarthFantasy ... LP
Mercury, 1979. Very Good ... $11.99
A crowning moment from the Chicago scene of the late 70s – the second Mercury album from Heaven & Earth, and a stunner all the way through! The set's an undisputed groover right from the start – thanks to the massive arrangements from the great Floyd Morris – an artist who did some excellent work in the Chicago indie soul scene in the 60s, including some classic funky 45s – and whose work here definitely gives Heaven & Earth a sharper edge than most other acts of their type at the time! You can definitely hear Floyd's touch in the funky bottom of the two-part classic "I Feel A Groove Under My Feet", and in the riffing guitar of "Poetry In A Box" – and the group also show their warmer, mellower side nicely on cuts like "Let's Get It Together", "I'm In Love With Your Lady", "I Only Have Eyes For You", and "Whole Lot Of Love" – nice warm numbers with great harmonies and gentle stepping grooves! ✨✧ Sean Khan with Hermeto PascoalPalmares Fantasy ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2018. Used ... $8.99
The deepest record we've heard so far from London's Sean Khan – and that's saying a lot, as we really loved his previous albums! Sean got his start on the broken beat scene a number of years back, and has slowly been evolving into more of a jazz-based artist – which he hits fantastically here in the company of the legendary Hermeto Pascoal, who plays Fender Rhodes and melodica on the record too! But honestly, even without Hermeto, Sean's pretty fantastic on his own – as his alto sax lines have this beautifully sharp edge, as does his work on flute and soprano – these soulful currents that almost rival recent work by Nat Birchall and some of his contemporaries. Other players include Ivan Conti on drums and Jim Mullin on electric guitar – and Heidi Vogel sings on two tracks, and Sabrina Mahleiros on one more. Titles include "Moment Of Collapse", "Waltz For Hermeto", "Palmares Fantasy", "Montreux", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "The Blonde", and "The Conversation". CD

One of Joe Loco's most haunting albums, and a moody mix of spare Latin percussion with haunting off-kilter piano solos, in a swirling blend of tracks that form Joe's Mambo Fantasy. Joe's work on the keys is as captivating as ever, and with the no-nonsense arrangements of the tracks, you can really get to hear him at his best on this album. Titles include "Mucho Swing", "Love For Sale", "Lover", "Cuban Nightingale", "Body & Soul", and "September In The Rain". Nice cover image, too! LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie ParkerBird On 52nd Street (Fantasy) ... LP
Jazz Workshop/Fantasy, 1948. Near Mint- ... $4.99
One of the more obscure Charlie Parker sessions of the 40s – at least in the original release! The material was recorded in 1948, on a home tape recorder, but not issued until after his death – part of a huge wave of Charlie Parker material that hit the market at the end of the 50s and start of the 60s! The sound here is quite raw – made even more so by the recording quality – but it also offers up a good illustration of the sheer power of Bird back in the day, the kind of bold, bracing energy that made even more than the regular jazz world sit up and take notice. The group's a quintet – with Miles Davis on trumpet, Duke Jordan on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Max Roach on drums – and there's been a few tape tricks in the mastering, in order to come up with a better version of some of the recordings. Tracks are short – in true bebop format – and titles include "Night In Tunisia", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "Out Of Nowhere", "My Old Flame", "How High The Moon", "This Time The Dream's On Me", "Hot House", and "Chasin The Bird". Fantasy, 1953. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A legendary concert – recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto, with a previously-unmatched quintet of superstar bop players – Charlie Parker on alto, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, and Max Roach on drums – all coming together in a performance that's a bit rough at times, but which more than makes up for that roughness in its own sense of history! A tasty bit of electric funk from this masterful MPS keyboardist! The cuts are lost sessions recorded in 1977 and 1978 – when Reith was working with electric piano, moog, and other keyboards – and the sound is stellar slow electric funk, a bit Herbie Hancock, a bit MPS, and all groovy! Includes "Love & Fantasy", a great spacey track that runs for 13 minutes – and which has a cool soundtrack sort of groove and loads of moogy keyboards. Also includes "Beams", a nice funker in the mid 70s MPS mode, and "Uschi", which is a slow slinky soulful number. LP, Vinyl record album

VariousFor Discos Only – Indie Dance Music From Fantasy & Vanguard Records – 1976 to 1981 (3CD set) ... CD
Fantasy/Craft, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99 35.99
Rare singles from the glory days of the American club music scene – most of which were only issued as promo release – hence the "for discos only" in the title! The package looks at the wealth of material issued by the Fantasy and Vanguard family of labels in the late 70s – imprints that have never fully gotten their due, in comparison to companies like Salsoul or Philadelphia International – even though they made an equally huge contribution to the world of funky grooves! In fact, given that Fantasy owned Prestige and other jazz labels at the time, they also had a longer heritage in soulful music – which often made some of their singles these real mini-masterpieces in sound. Vanguard was equally unusual, but in a different way – as disco and club were relatively new to their catalog – which almost seemed to give them a freedom to be a bit more experimental than some of the bigger companies working the dancefloors. The result is a great collection of really creative, really upbeat material – almost all of which is nice and extended, and presented here on the rare 12" single versions. Titles include "Til You Surrender (special rmx)" by Rainbow Brown, "Rock Creek Park (rmx)" by The Blackbyrds, "No One Can Do It Like You (12" special Shep Pettibone rmx)", "Chill Out (12" version)" by Free Expression, "I Don't Know What's On Your Mind (special 12" mix)" by Spiders Webb, "Over & Over (special 12" disco)" by Sylvester, "Turn The Music Up (12" disco)" by Players Association, "Beat Of The Night (special 12" disco)" by Fever, "Party Vibes (special 12" disco)" by Ike Turner & Home Grown Funk, "You've Got Me Dancing In My Sleep (special remaster)" by Frisky, "Boogie City (special 12" disco mix)" by Phil Hurtt, "Space Bass (special 12" disco)" by Slick, "Mondo Man (12" version)" by Roni Griffith, "It's Music (special 12" disco)" by Damon Harris, "Always There (special 12" disco)" by Side Effect, "For Your Love (special 12" disco)" by Idris Muhammad, "Straight To The Bank (special 12" disco)" by Bill Summers, "Boogie With Me (12" disco)" by Poussez, "Don't Know What To Say" by The Blackbyrds, "I'm The One" by Rainbow Brown, "I Got The Feeling (Patrick Cowley megamix)" by Two Tons O Fun, "Dance (special 12" disco)" by Paradise Express, and "Savage Lover (12" disco long vocal)" by The Ring. Cannonball AdderleyPhenix ... LP
Fantasy, 1975. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! The album's actually Cannonball's last full studio set, but it's also one of his greatest too – a very hip little record that features arrangements that are slightly bigger than before – almost a CTI sort of mode, with a similar CTI sense of space, sound, and timing! There's some great keyboards on the set – courtesy of George Duke and Mike Wolff – and other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Airto on percussion, Sam Jones and Walter Booker on bass, and Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy on drums. The keyboards lead off most numbers, but they're followed strongly by Cannon and Nat – both of whom open up wonderfully in the magical setting of the record! Titles include great new takes on "Sack O Woe", "Work Song", "Jive Samba", "74 Miles Away", "Walk Tall/Mercy Mercy Mercy", "Country Preacher", "Domination", and "This Here" – plus "Hi Fly" and "Hamba Nami". AllspiceAllspice ... CD
Fantasy/Dusty Groove, 1977. Used ... $7.99
The only album ever from Allspice – but a hell of an incredible soul record – and one that's kept the group's name strong with collectors and rare groove fanatics for years! The album's on of the best Fantasy Records productions by Wayne Henderson and his At Home team – and like some of the others, is handled with a groove that's tight, yet plenty sophisticated too – light years from mainstream disco or common club of the late 70s, and instead informed by plenty of jazz and deeper ideas as well! The vibe is perfect – as heavenly and righteous as some of the best Roy Ayers club tracks of the time – which proves to be a perfect foil for the Allspice style of mixing male and female vocals – which again is often done in an Ayers-like mode. The sound is sublime throughout – one of those real treasures that should have been a huge record in the 70s, but was barely pressed up at all – and quickly forgotten about by the record company. Yet even after all these years, the whole thing sounds amazing – one of those albums we'd never part with at all! Titles include the groovy "Slipped Away", the funky stepper "Hungry For Your Love" – and loads of other great tunes that include "Love Fire", "Destiny", "She's A Lady", "I Don't Know", and "Give It Time". A great back-to-basics solo album from the legendary David Axelrod – cut in the mid 70s for Fantasy Records, after higher-concept projects like The Auction and Messiah! This set gets right to the core – and focuses on the funk currents that were always part of Axelrod's larger arrangements, but which sometimes never got pulled to the forefront as strongly – and the approach is almost like some of the funky jazz albums that were issued by Fantasy/Prestige Records at the time – especially those that Axelrod produced for Cannonball Adderley. The whole thing has that great Axelrod sense of composition, with lots of space, and lots of spare cold bits that are nice nice nice for sample cuts – and titles include the classic track "Everything Counts", plus "Get Up Off Your Knees", "My Family", and "Mucho Chupar". Tony Bennett/Bill EvansComplete Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Recordings (Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album/Together Again – plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Fantasy, 1975/1976. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
The complete recording of Tony Bennett and Bill Evans as a duo – the Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album from '75 and the '76 follow up Together Again – back to back, plus a bonus CD of alternate takes! If you've ever doubted the real jazz sensibility of Tony Bennett, the Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album is the one to change your mind – because Tony's working here in a marvelously unadorned setting – with only the piano of Bill Evans to back him up! The record's a rare gem from years after Bennett was cracking the pop charts, but was willing to pull back to the jazz of his roots – and the session's equally rare for Evans, who rarely worked with vocalists at this point in his career. The simplicity of the album is its strength – and together, the pair really sound tremendous – slightly faltering at times, but in a way that exposes a sense of humanity you might not find in other records, especially those by Bennett. Titles include "When In Rome", "Some Other Time", "The Touch Of Your Lips", "My Foolish Heart", "Waltz For Debby", and "Young & Foolish". Together Again is another gem, following the form of the first duos record exceptionally well, perhaps with Evan's piano a bit more prominent in the sound, and another fine batch of tunes, including "The Bad And The Beautiful", "Lucky To Be Me", "A Child Is Born", "Lonely Girl", "You Must Believe In Spring" and more. The bonus CD features alternate takes of material from the 2 albums, with versions of "You And Foolish", "The Touch Of Your Lips", "Some Other Time", "When In Rome", "Waltz For Debbie" and multiple versions of "The Bad And The Beautiful", "A Child Is Born", and more. A great album of funky dancefloor tunes! Originally issued in 1978, and clearly for the New York dancefloor crowd – the record takes the earlier work of funk group The Blackbyrds, and remixes the tracks slightly to pump up the groove a bit for the dancers. While the approach might not sound good on paper, it actually works wonderfully on the record – as the tunes retain all of the jazz funk feel of the originals, without any of the cheap tricks you might expect! In fact, the later date of the album probably allowed Fantasy to get away with some rawer material, so you'll hear more of the "true" side of Lenny – especially on the album's live tracks. We think this stuff is pure genius, and it's more than just comedy – it's verbal improvisation on a scale that would match the best jazz soloist. The stunning debut of CCR – a record that still burns with an undeniable fire after all these years! Sure, all the elements here have been copped by many – the fuzzy guitar, lean bluesy groove, and raw soul-inspired vocals of John Fogerty – but the way the group puts them together is tremendous – and there's a lean, raw vibe to the whole record that instantly communicates the urgency the group's music had back in the second half of the 60s! Even the group's take on other artists' songs never sound dated at all – and taken together, the mix of material on the record is even greater than the sum of its parts – with a power that punches more than any of these songs on their own. The whole thing's also a great testament to Fogerty's guitar skills too – with some raw solos that blow away most of the blues rock pretenders of the period – on titles that include "Get Down Woman", "The Working Man", "Gloomy", "Walking On The Water", "Ninety Nine & A Half", "Porterville", and "Susie Q". Early work from Detroit techno legend Juan Atkins! The single features some rare pre-Fantasy work from Atkins – an early take on "Cosmic Cars", and the more grooving "The Line". "Cars" has a cold, stark electronic feel – and "The Line" still has electronics, but also percolates with more of a European dancefloor groove. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Duke EllingtonIntimacy Of The Blues ... LP
Fantasy, 1967/1970. Sealed ... $6.99
A slightly smaller take on the Ellington sound – but one that's still a bit fuller than you might guess from the "Small Bands" on the cover! There's definitely a more intimate feel here than usual – especially given the size of ensembles Duke was working with in the 60s – but the approach is more like some of the earliest Ellington combos, a full feel as most of the group works tightly together, while one soloist snakes out with some deeply soulful lines on his own! The first six tracks here feature "The Combo Suite" – recorded in 1967, with some especially nice horn work from Johnny Hodges on alto, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Cat Anderson on trumpet, and Lawrence Brown on trombone. Remaining tracks were recorded in 1970, in New York and Las Vegas – and include "Noon Mooning", "Rockochet", "All Too Soon", and "Tippy Toeing Through The Jungle Garden". LP, Vinyl record album

Spare magic from Bill Evans – an album recorded at the Montreux Jazz Fest in 1975, as a set of sensitive duets with Eddie Gomez – on cuts that feature Bill playing both acoustic and electric piano! Acoustic piano dominates – spun out in spare space that's completely wonderful – ringing tones and that lyrical pulse that always makes Evans' music so inspiring, even at its darkest – and Eddie's round, warm basslines are completely brilliant – even more full of feeling and more deeply developed than his earliest work with Bill. Plus, the set list features lots of under-recorded tunes by Evans, not so many of the oft-heard tunes that always show up on other live albums. The title track to Fat Larry's album of the same name – and easily one of the greatest club tracks ever recorded by the group! Allen GinsbergAllen Ginsberg Reads Howl & Other Poems (180 gram red vinyl box set – with book) ... LP
Fantasy/Craft, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 49.99
Maybe one of the coolest albums of poetry ever recorded – a set that features a young, pre-hippie Allen Ginsberg – delivering his epic poem Howel, plus some other key works too. The young Ginsberg's voice is great – and really fills the works with a lot of bitterness and cynicism – with maybe more of a beat-era presentation than you'd know from his other later records, especially the music ones. This is one of the few albums that San Francisco-based Fantasy records cut of famous beat poets reading their own work – and it's probably one of the most enduring! Ginsberg reads "Howl", "Footnote To Howl", "Sunflower Sutra", "Supermarket In California", and other poems from the late 50s – and there's no musical accompaniment at all. LP, Vinyl record album
(Deluxe edition box set – 180 gram red vinyl pressing in tip-on jacket – packaged with a book of new liner notes, a copy of the original City Lights book Howl & Other Poems, a postcard, and 8x10 photo of Ginsberg!)

Vince GuaraldiCast Your Fate To The Wind – Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus ... LP
Fantasy, 1962. Very Good ... $7.99
A beautiful record of light, lyrical piano jazz – and one of the best-selling jazz albums ever on Fantasy Records! Vince Guaraldi started the set as a tribute to the film Black Orpheus – and some of the album features his nice renditions of Jobim/Bonfa tunes like "Manha De Carnaval" and "Samba De Orpheus". However, Guaraldi also managed to pen his own amazing track – "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" – a lyrical romping piano instrumental that went onto become a huge charting instrumental hit during the 60s. The track's been heard a million times over the years, but it's still pretty darn great – and it's surrounded in a nice set with other tunes that have the same feel – including "O Nosso Amour", "Alma-Ville", "Since I Fell For You", and "Moon River". Fantasy, 1965. Very Good ... $5.99
One of the most ambitious recordings ever undertaken by Vince Guaraldi – a set recorded at San Francisco's Grace Cathedral, and one that augments Vince's usual trio format with a choir of voices – in a way that gives the whole album a wonderfully spiritual sound! The approach is a bit like some of the "jazz mass" albums of the 60s, but also has echoes of the Donald Byrd and Max Roach "jazz with voices" sessions – and alongside Vince's beautiful piano work, the use of the vocals sounds especially wonderful. Titles include "Agnus Dei", "Come Holy Ghost", "Nicene Creed", "Humbly I Adore Thee", and "Holy Communion Blues". And for some strange reason, the San Francisco Diocese is listed as the co-writer of all tunes – which leads us to wonder if they were shaking down Vince for cash! LP, Vinyl record album

An overlooked chapter of the 70s genius of Woody Herman – and the kind of album that shows him continuing to grow strongly, many years after his initial fame! The record takes off ambitiously from some of the funkier Herman sessions of the start of the 70s – and features the core group augmented by the Houston Symphony Orchestra on side one – offering up larger backings to color in the sophisticated sounds of the tunes "Variation On A Scene" and "Children Of Lima", both jazz suites penned by Alan Broadbent, who'd done great work with Herman's group. Side two is back to straighter big band numbers – tunes that burst out with a lot of life and energy, and which have a few of the soulful stylings of Herman's previous funk. Highlights include great covers of "25 Or 6 To 4" and "Where Is The Love", plus a version of Broadbent's driving "Far In". CD

Rhythm players include Joe Beck and Ray Barretto – and the whole album's great throughout. John La PortaTheme & Variations (Conceptions plus previously unreleased material) ... CD
Fantasy, Late 50s. Used ... $2.99
Pretty amazing work from one of the greatest under-rated talents of 50s modern jazz! John LaPorta was a brilliant multi-instrumentalist who's probably best known for his work with Mingus in the mid 50s Jazz Workshop years, and for his earlier sides with Woody Herman – but it's on records under his own name that LaPorta really begins to shine. This great set features 14 tracks that were recorded in the 50s, but never issued before – and 9 more that were from the album Conceptions, issued briefly in the 50s by Fantasy Records. The first 14 tracks form a long suite of jazz-based compositions, handled with a modernist chamber-type approach – and based around some really great solo work on trumpet, baritone, tenor, and bass. The feel is almost like a 50s jazz soundtrack – with lots of moody moments paired with others that break out in a stronger swinging groove. The remaining tracks are equally nice – in a similar style, and showing LaPorta as a composer who could have handled just about any ambitious jazz project of the time. Titles include "Forward Motion", "Jazz Canon", "Images", "Lucidity", "Little Fantasy", "Ferme LaPorta", "En Rapport", and "Triplets You Say". CD

Fantasy, 1958/1962. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
Nice Prestige 2-fer from the 70s that brings together 2 great albums. Speak, Brother, Speak is solid righteous jazz from the Max Roach of the 60s – recorded at a time when the player was really breaking away from his straighter hardbop roots, and delving deeper into more freely soulful jazz expression! It features 2 long tracks – each a side apiece – played by Max with a quartet that includes Clifford Jordan on tenor, Eddie Khan on bass, and Mal Waldron on piano. Jordan really takes off on the album – demonstrating a great ability for long blowing and creative exploration that was only hinted at on his other studio sessions at the time, and which really points the way towards some of his freer-thinking records of the 70s. Waldron is great too – bringing in some nicely darker colors that really help to round out the sound. Titles include "Speak Brother Speak" and "A Variation". Deeds, Not Words is another classic Max Roach session, from a bit earlier in 1958, with Booker Little, George Coleman, Art Davis, and Ray Draper. The album's got a couple of great originals by Bill Lee – "Jodie's Cha Cha" and "Deeds, Not Words" – plus Draper's classic "Filide", which is one of those tracks that you know you've heard, but can never recognize. Also included is "Conversation", a very cool solo by Roach on the drums! LP, Vinyl record album

Lonnie Hewitt's at the keyboards here – and he's got a sly, slinky groove that's totally great – a sound that's even more spacious than Tjaders' vibes, and which seems to push Cal into a whole new space in sound. The rest of the group includes Rob Fisher on acoustic bass, Pete Riso on drums, and the great Pancho Sanchez on congas – who further helps hold down the Latin side of the sound. Titles include a stellar 12 minute reading of Cal's "I Showed Them", which is pure funk all the way through – plus "Bluesology", "Body & Soul", and the extended "Black Orpheus Medley". Cal TjaderConcert By The Sea ... LP
Fantasy, 1959. Very Good+ ... $11.99
The crashing waves of the Pacific coast hardly seem like the serene setting you might want for the vibes of Cal Tjader – but this album works surprisingly well, and offers up Cal's combo in a Monterey live date, before the jazz festival really got going strong! The group's one that matches his best early albums for Fantasy – piano from Lonnie Hewitt, soulful bass from Al McKibbon, and some great Latin percussion from Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo! Paul Horn also joins the group on flute – blowing with lyrical lines that fit the sound wonderfully, adding a whole new dimension to the music. Many tracks are longer than usual for the Fantasy years – and titles include "Walkin With Wally", "Doxie", and "Afro Blue". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cal TjaderJazz At The Blackhawk ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1957. Used ... $4.99
A real standout session from Cal Tjader – a straight jazz side from the late 50s, recorded with a hip group that includes Vince Guaraldi on piano, Gene Wright on bass, and Al Torre on drums. Although Cal's possibly better-remembered for his Latin work of the time, the record is a good reminder that the Tjader approach to vibes worked equally well in a more standard jazz setting – especially when paired with the lightly lyrical piano genius of a young Vince Guaraldi! The set was captured live at the Blackhawk in San Francisco – practically home turf for Cal and the group – with a sound that's easy, laidback, and very nicely grooving! Titles include "Lover Come Back To Me", "Bill B", "Land's End", "Thinking Of You MJQ", and "Two For Blues Suite". CD
(Please note the disc has a few marks but plays fine.)

Cal TjaderLatin Kick ... LP
Fantasy, 1956. Good+ ... $11.99
Excellent 50s Latin work from Cal Tjader – and a set that boasts some especially nice tenor from the legendary Brew Moore! Moore's sound here anchors the date nicely – bringing in a bit more of a bottom sound than usual for a Cal Tjader Latin date – really rooting the record with a strong sense of soul has he blows with that wonderful tone he had in the 50s. Other players include Manuel Duran on piano, Carlos Duran on bass, Beny Velarde on timbales, and Luis Miranda on congas – and titles include "Invitation", "Tropicana", "Manuel's Mambo", and "All the Things You Are". Cal TjaderLos Ritmos Calientes (Ritmo Caliente/Mas Ritmo Caliente) ... LP
Fantasy, 1955/1957. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99
A 2-in-1 Latin jazz spectacular from the mighty Cal Tjader! First up is the album Ritmo Caliente – one of Tjader's first Latin-tinged sessions for Fantasy Records – and a really wonderful batch of tracks recorded with a shifting array of very hip players! In addition to Cal's vibes, and expected Latin percussion – handled by Armando Peraza on congas and bongos – the set also features some totally slamming piano work from Eddie Cano, Manuel Duran, and Richard Wyands – each of whom get a chance at the keys on the set, really helping to bring in a range of different colors and tones. An added bonus is Jerome Richardson on flute – who plays on about half of the album's tracks – in that soulfully snaking way he virtually owned back in the 50s. Tracks are short, and filled with plenty of energy – and titles include "Ritmo Caliente", "Mambo Moderno", "Alegres Timbales", "Buhutu (Nanigo 6/8)", "Cubano Chant", "Goza", "Lamento De Hodi", "Mueve La Cintura", and "Afro Corolombo". On Mas Ritmo Caliente, Cal Tjader's working in a smoking Latin vibe throughout – and has managed to get some great extra help in his efforts! The album was mostly recorded in Chicago and New York, and these different locals seem to give the record a slightly different flavor than some of Tjader's other west coast dates from the 50s – a slightly harder Latin groove, thanks to the presence of players like Jose Chombo Silva on tenor sax, Gerald Sanfino on flute and alto, Bobby Rodriguez on bass, Mongo Santamaria on congas, Willie Bobo on timbales, and Luis Kant on percussion. Vince Guaraldi's on piano on all tracks – bringing in a nice dose of warmth next to Cal's vibes – and titles include "Mongorama", "Ritmo Africano", "Ritmo Rumba", "Tumbao", "Perdido", and "Cuco On Timbales". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some wear and splitting with some marker in the top left.)

✨✧ Cal TjaderPrimo ... LP
Fantasy, 1973. Very Good ... $16.99
A really hard-hitting set from Cal Tjader – and one that's done with a good dose of 60s Latin Soul as well! The album was recorded in the early 70s, but it's really got a late 60s New York flavor – thanks to arrangers Charlie Palmieri and Tito Puente – who cook up a groove that's sockingly soulful, and much more outta site than some of Tjader's other work from the time! The style here is more Fania than Fantasy Records – and Cal jumps right in with some great work on vibes – ringing out in a tight, Joe Cuba-esque mode on cuts that include great covers of "El Watusi" and "Bang Bang" – plus "Gringo City", "Vibe Mambo", and "Mambo Show". Proof that Latin Soul was alive and well in the 70s – if you knew where to look! LP, Vinyl record album

Cal TjaderTjader ... LP
Fantasy, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $16.99
An excellent album from legendary vibist Cal Tjader – and one of his truly electric albums! A key factor to the greatness of this one is keyboardist Al Zulaica – who plays some amazing Fender Rhodes on the album, really unlocking a whole new sound of Cal's vibes in the process! The blend of keys and vibes is amazing – a sound that sets a new standard for the 70s – and the rest of the group here features a range of percussion players, a bit of flute, and three trumpets that buoy up the grooves nicely from the bottom! Titles include Cal's classic "I Showed Them", a great reading of "Evil Ways", and the cuts "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", "Fresh Air", "She's Leaving Home", and "Mambero". LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley TurrentineEverybody Come On Out ... LP
Fantasy, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Sweet, smooth, and soulful – a heck of a great album from Stanley Turrentine, and one that's recorded in a mode that steps off nicely from his best work at CTI! The sound's a bit tighter than most of his sides as Mister T, but the groove is still quite similar – a warm approach to electric soul jazz, played by the best in the business, and topped off by some great lead solo work from Stan – all in that impeccable tone, and with some surprisingly creative solo flourishes that seem to pop out of nowhere and keep the record interesting! Wade Marcus arranged, and players include Paul Jackson, Harvey Mason, Bill Summers, and Joe Sample – on tunes that include "I'm Not In Love", "There Is A Place", "Stairway To Heaven", "Everybody Come On Out", "Hope That We Can Be Together Soon", and "Airport Love Theme". One of the nice records made by Joe during his funky comeback of the late 60s/early 70s. He's singing here in a setting that's decidedly hipper than on earlier albums – with the early 70s Nat/Cannonball Adderley collective that includes George Duke on piano, Carol Kaye on bass, and production work by David Axelrod. Titles include "Heritage", "Sad Song", "Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow", and "Who She Do". CD
