Sharon Mhati Chatam (Gianfranco Reberberi)Fantasy (with bonus download) ... LP
Cinedelic (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99
With a cover like that, it's easy to see where the fantasy in the title is going – certainly not into the musky world of swords and sorcery, and instead into the realm of slinky sounds that are right at home in the Italian sound library world of the 70s! The music here has all the warm erotic touches of some of the better-known soundtrack material from the time – put together by Gianfranco Reverberi, who you might know from some of his crossover prog classics – but delivered with a lean instrumental mode that often has a keyboard as the lead instrument, over slow-stepping basslines and some nice washes of strings used in just the right way. Some tunes have a gentle funk vibe, others are sweetly sexy – and the set also features versions of some bigger hits from the time, with titles that include "Daniel", "Sylvia's Mother", "Fire Shadows In The Sunset", "Vincent", "She Was Not An Angel", "E Poi", "Quel Che Non Saprei Dirti Mai A Parole", and "Closed In A Drugstore". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes download! Please Note – the shrink wrap on these copies have split along the openings, they are however still new and unplayed!)

Tom DisseveltFantasy In Orbit – An Astronaut's Impressions While Orbiting The Earth (mono & stereo pressing) ... LP
Philips/We Are Busy Bodies (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $30.99 32.99
A wonderful album of early analogue electronics – originally issued with a title that billed it as "an astronaut's reflections while visiting the earth"! The sound here is way more outside than that, though – almost more as if the astronaut was an alien – with weird, spooky sounds that are mindblowing, and years ahead of their time – a great example of the kind of forward-thinking music Dissevelt was making back in the 60s. Some tracks have stark bleeps and pings, others are more low-end and atmospheric, and together the whole thing feels much more like some serious electronic experiment than any sort of kiddie space age set! Titles include "Woomerangs", "Ignition", "Spearhead", "Zanzi", "Anchor Chains", "Re-Entry", "Mexican Mirror", and "Pacific Dawn". LP, Vinyl record album

Michael GingoldAd Astra – 20 Years of Newspaper Ads For Sci-Fi & Fantasy Films ... Book
1984, 2019. New Copy ... $24.99 34.95
A fascinating look at a world of cinema from the last 20 years of the past century – served up in a host of rare newspaper ads that were painstakingly collected by the author! Yet Michael Gingold isn't just some guy who snipped his way through the paper for decades – as he also presents these images with both information on the films, and examples of the best reviews that were written at the time – often laid out next to images from papers and press kits, in both color and black and white. There's plenty of classic 80s and 90s films in the book – but there's also plenty that we either didn't remember, or didn't know about at all – served up in a heavy, hardcover volume that runs for 268 pages, with an index of all the films at the back! ✨✧ Daniel GrauDisco Fantasy ... CD
Oom Dooby Dochas/Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Sweet clubby sounds from a very obscure source – the mighty Daniel Grau, an artist who was working on the Venezuelan scene at the end of the 70s – and hardly ever got the exposure of American or European disco artists at the time! The album's way more than a fantasy – as Grau is right on the money, right from the start – able to spin out these beautifully tight, funky grooves that are awash in warm keyboards, riffing guitar, and lots of romping rhythms at the bottom – a groove that almost reminds us of Cerrone or some of his French contemporaries of the period, but a bit warmer overall – touched with this more intimate approach that really makes the music great – and sounds a lot different than some of the more commercial strains of disco from the period. Titles include "Sonido Magico", "Atlantis", "Doopey", "Dulce Armonia", "Swing Rock", "Guitarra Y Amor", and "Disco Fantasy". CD

Sean Khan with Hermeto PascoalPalmares Fantasy ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
The deepest record we've heard so far from London's Sean Khan – and that's saying a lot, as we really loved his previous albums! Sean got his start on the broken beat scene a number of years back, and has slowly been evolving into more of a jazz-based artist – which he hits fantastically here in the company of the legendary Hermeto Pascoal, who plays Fender Rhodes and melodica on the record too! But honestly, even without Hermeto, Sean's pretty fantastic on his own – as his alto sax lines have this beautifully sharp edge, as does his work on flute and soprano – these soulful currents that almost rival recent work by Nat Birchall and some of his contemporaries. Other players include Ivan Conti on drums and Jim Mullin on electric guitar – and Heidi Vogel sings on two tracks, and Sabrina Mahleiros on one more. Titles include "Moment Of Collapse", "Waltz For Hermeto", "Palmares Fantasy", "Montreux", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "The Blonde", and "The Conversation". CD

Van McCoyMy Favorite Fantasy ... LP
MCA, 1978. Near Mint- ... $0.99
An excellent album of smooth soul tracks, and maybe Van's best record of the 70s! The record shows Van sitting at the piano in an intimate setting – ala Barry White – and it's got a similar Love Unlimited Orchestra approach, with much large backing behind Van's voice, and a very full instrumental sound. Van sings lead vocals, which aren't always that great – but he more than makes up for it with some great piano and keyboard work, and some wonderful soul songwriting and arranging that recall his best uptown moments of the late 60s. The record has a few uptempo hustle-type tracks, but they're all pretty darn great soul songs, and there's loads of great mellow soul moments woven in to make the record a nice album of ballads and groovers. Titles include "Before & After", "Wings Of Love", "My Favorite Fantasy", "That's The Story Of My Life", and "You're So Right For Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Phil MooreFantasy For Girl & Orchestra (Verve) ... LP
Verve, Late 50s. Very Good ... $29.99
One of the strangest records ever on Verve! The album's a dreamy batch of easy tunes – composed by Phil Moore, and played by a group that includes Lucky Thompson, Marshall Royal, Snooky Young, Gerald Wilson, Calvin Jackson, and Harry Klee, plus added strings. The overall feel is similar to some of the mellower "with strings" albums on Verve – with a lead soloist stepping out on each track on the set. However, the real stunner is the extended "Fantasy For Girl & Orchestra", which features the voice of Annette Warren having an internal monologue to deal with her sadness. Crazy stuff! Other tracks include "Misty Moon Blues", "Cornucopia", "Fugue For Barroom Piano", and "125th Street Prophet". LP, Vinyl record album

The great Lalo Schifrin plays piano and leads a crack group of studio players through some larger orchestral material with a nice jazzy feel! The overall approach is similar to Lalo's classic 60s soundtrack work – with nice solos arching out over sweeping strings and orchestral passages, and all tracks written with a good deal of punch, plus lots of little Latiny influences. Easily one of his most perfectly conceived albums of the 60s – and pretty darn tough to find. Tracks are long and titles include "El Salon Mexico", "New Fantasy", "Sabre Dance", and "Prelude #2". ✨✧ TrafficMr Fantasy ... LP
United Artists, 1967. Very Good- ... $9.99
The incredible first album from Traffic – a record that was already way ahead of the pack, and would set the tone for so many other sounds and modes from others in years to come! At some level, the group were just coming off the big beat group years in the UK – that time of strong inspiration from American soul, jazz, and R&B – but they're already pushing all these elements in very different ways – certainly psychedelic, as you'd guess from the image on the cover – but also still holding onto a lot of the soul and jazz that first inspired them! To our ears, the reed work of Chris Woods is as important to the record as the Hammond from Steve Winwood, guitar from Dave Mason, and drums from Jim Capaldi – plus the vocals from all three – and in addition to the classic title cut "Mr Fantasy", other tunes include "Dealer", "House For Everyone", "Berkshire Poppies", "No Face No Name No Number", and "Coloured Rain". TransportDisco Fantasy Land ... LP
Albina Music Trust, 1979. New Copy ... $19.99 21.99
Never-issued work from this obscure Portland group – a combo who definitely deliver the disco fantasy of the title, but in ways that are more funk-based overall! Transport has ties to the Gangsters and Nu Shooz, and the vibe here is more that of a local funk group picking up the pace a bit for the late 70s generation – but still keeping things lean with tight combo instrumentation that's heavy on basslines and keyboards – topped with playful vocals that give things a clubby vibe, but which also have a much deeper execution than the usual disco chorus mode! Maybe it's the lack of strings or commercial production, but the whole thing feels much hipper than you'd expect – nicely righteous currents running through tunes that include "Move Your Body To The Music", "Disco Fantasy Land", "Stay With Me", and a nice remake of "Always There". The set's an undisputed groover right from the start – thanks to the massive arrangements from the great Floyd Morris – an artist who did some excellent work in the Chicago indie soul scene in the 60s, including some classic funky 45s – and whose work here definitely gives Heaven & Earth a sharper edge than most other acts of their type at the time! You can definitely hear Floyd's touch in the funky bottom of the two-part classic "I Feel A Groove Under My Feet", and in the riffing guitar of "Poetry In A Box" – and the group also show their warmer, mellower side nicely on cuts like "Let's Get It Together", "I'm In Love With Your Lady", "I Only Have Eyes For You", and "Whole Lot Of Love" – nice warm numbers with great harmonies and gentle stepping grooves! One of our favorite Roy Ayers albums of all time – and an overlooked gem from Roy's late 70s years at Polydor! This set's a bit more laidback and less clubby than some other Ayers work of the period – which means it's got this wonderful jazzy groove throughout – a sweet mix of midtempo modern soul and the vibes-based style that Roy kept on perfecting at the time. Tracks are longer than usual, and they really open up in a way that fits the title – slinky and seductive, but never soppy or commercial at all – that really special blend of warmth and wisdom that's always made Roy Ayers so great. Titles include the sublime title track "Love Fantasy", which begins with Roy chatting up some girl in the intro, then sliding into a nice smooth jazz funk tip on the chorus – plus the great cut "Sigh", a sweet little bubbling number with a wonderfully breathy quality! Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! The album's actually Cannonball's last full studio set, but it's also one of his greatest too – a very hip little record that features arrangements that are slightly bigger than before – almost a CTI sort of mode, with a similar CTI sense of space, sound, and timing! There's some great keyboards on the set – courtesy of George Duke and Mike Wolff – and other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Airto on percussion, Sam Jones and Walter Booker on bass, and Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy on drums. The keyboards lead off most numbers, but they're followed strongly by Cannon and Nat – both of whom open up wonderfully in the magical setting of the record! Titles include great new takes on "Sack O Woe", "Work Song", "Jive Samba", "74 Miles Away", "Walk Tall/Mercy Mercy Mercy", "Country Preacher", "Domination", and "This Here" – plus "Hi Fly" and "Hamba Nami". Fantasy/OJC, 1975. Used ... $2.99
If you've ever doubted the real jazz sensibility of Tony Bennett, then this is an album to change your mind – because Tony's working here in a marvelously unadorned setting – with only the piano of Bill Evans to back him up! The record's a rare gem from years after Bennett was cracking the pop charts, but was willing to pull back to the jazz of his roots – and the session's equally rare for Evans, who rarely worked with vocalists at this point in his career. The simplicity of the album is its strength – and together, the pair really sound tremendous – slightly faltering at times, but in a way that exposes a sense of humanity you might not find in other records, especially those by Bennett. The 2 great albums by Big Star – back-to-back on CD! #1 Record is simply one of the best rock albums of the 70s – partly remembered as a defining moment in power pop, but to us there's a depth of emotion here that goes way beyond chords and choruses, and sinks into our very souls every time we listen to it! Indespensible Memphis rock, to say the very least. Titles include "Feel", "Ballad Of El Goodo", "In The Street", "The India Song", "When My Baby's Beside Me", "Give Me Another Chance", "Watch The Sunrise" and more. Radio City is also one of 70s rock's finest moments. With Chris Bell out of the picture, one could successfully argue the traits that it lacks from the first album, but this thing stands up as work of genius all its own – twith a raw, shambling immediacy to the songs that cut incredibly deep. Amazing stuff all around – totally indispensable! 2 classics from The Blackbyrds – back to back on a single CD! City Life is a fantastic album from the legendary jazz funk combo – a bit smoother than their first, but that's the great thing about it! The record has the band getting even tighter than before – coming up with an amazing jazz-inflected funk groove that still leaves us breathless after all these years – and which is the perfect fusion of jazz and soul that was going down with the best groups in the mid 70s. The best example of this sound can be heard on the massive cut "Rock Creek Park" – which begins with a wonderful bass on the intro, a killer moogy keyboard bit, and a super-catchy chorus that goes "doin' it in the park," which you should recognize in about 30 seconds! The rest of the album is great too – and titles include the classic sample track "Love So Fine" – plus "Happy Music", "Hash and Eggs", "Thankful Bout Yourself", and "All I Ask". Unfinished Business has The Blackbyrds are at the top of their game – working in a sweet blend of jazz, funk, and soul – all produced to perfection by their mentor Donald Byrd! The groove is quite similar to some of Byrd's best from the time – a bit fuller than the first few records by The Blackbyrds, thanks to the addition of larger horns – and put together in ways that really has them soaring towards the skies on waves or righteous soul! There's vocals on most tracks, but they really take equal place next to the group's wonderful instrumentation – especially the heady keyboards of the mighty Kevin Toney, still a key member of the combo at this point. Titles include "Party Land", "In Life", "Time Is Movin", "Lady", and "You've Got That Something". CD

A great album of funky dancefloor tunes! Originally issued in 1978, and clearly for the New York dancefloor crowd – the record takes the earlier work of funk group The Blackbyrds, and remixes the tracks slightly to pump up the groove a bit for the dancers. While the approach might not sound good on paper, it actually works wonderfully on the record – as the tunes retain all of the jazz funk feel of the originals, without any of the cheap tricks you might expect. The album's as essential as any of the group's earlier albums – and it's filled with great versions of classics like "Supernatural Feeling", "Gut Level", "Walking In Rhythm", "Do It Fluid", "Rock Creek Park", and "Happy Music". Great stuff from the early days of the Brubeck/Desmond alliance – when Dave's piano had first met up with Paul's alto, with incredible results that would soon transform the face of popular jazz. The set's mostly standards – but it does include 2 strong originals, "Crazy Chris" and "Lyons Busy", as well as some Brubeck-ized versions of tunes like "Frenesi", "Mamselle", and "At A Perfume Counter". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover is lightly stained at the bottom 3 inches, with some gloss wrinkles in front, some stuck on paper in back, and a small split in the top seam.)

Fantasy/OJC, Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... $6.99
A full LP that combines early work by Dave Brubeck – pulled together from a few 10" LPs, and packaged in a nice cartoony cover. The record features the work of his octet – a group that gives a rare opportunity to hear Brubeck in a large group setting, and one that also features work by Cal Tjader on drums (!), plus Dick Collins and Paul Desmond on their usual instruments. Titles include "The Prisoner's Song", "Prelude", "IPCA", "Fugue On Bop Themes", "Schizophrenic Scherzo", "Playland At The Beach", and "Serenade Suite". CD

Dave BrubeckJazz At Oberlin ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1953. Used ... $4.99
A classic album from Dave – recorded at Oberlin College, the mid-Ohio haven of bohemiana, and a growing hotbed of jazz activity centered around students in the college's conservatory of music. Dave and crew made the trip at the request of the kids – breaking from their mostly San Francisco-based recording career to cut what would end up becoming a very successful album in Dave's catalog, and begin a whole "at" or "goes to" series in his career. The group's the early quartet with Paul Desmond, Lloyd Davis, and Ron Crotty – and tunes include long and jamming versions of "The Way You Look Tonight", "How High The Moon", and "Stardust". CD

Classic early live material from the Dave Brubeck Quartet – already humming along nicely with some great alto sax from Paul Desmond! The group's in fine form here – a bit more relaxed and open than on their Columbia recordings – with plenty of creative piano lines from Dave, showing just a slight dose of modernism, and lots more of that cool, icy alto sax work that made Desmond a standout right from the start. Rhythm is by Ron Crotty on bass and Joe Dodge on drums – and titles include "Laura", "Lullaby In Rhythm", "For All We Know", "All The Things You Are", and "I'll Never Smile Again". CD

Dave BrubeckPlays & Plays & Plays (with bonus track) ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1957. Used ... $3.99
Dave Brubeck plays and plays and plays – but not in the repetitive way you'd guess from the title, given that this solo album is easily one of his most inventive from the Fantasy years! Solo styles aren't usually what we'd expect from Brubeck at this point, but Dave handles them very well – and sometimes with a lot more warmth than some of the music by his famous quartet! There's a nice sense of historicity in his playing here – proof that Brubeck wasn't always such an arch modernist, even though there's plenty of modern moments that leap out nicely, even among familiar tunes. More than anything, though, it's great to hear Dave really stretch out on the keys – with this fluid, relaxed approach that's really beautiful. Titles include "Imagination", "Sweet Cleo Brown", "Indian Summer", "I'm Old Fashioned", "Love Is Here To Stay", and "In Search Of A Time". CD features the bonus track "Two Sleepy People". CD

A Dave Brubeck/Paul Desmond double header – two vintage albums in a single package! Stardust is great stuff from the early days of the Brubeck/Desmond alliance – when Dave's piano had first met up with Paul's alto, with incredible results that would soon transform the face of popular jazz. The set's mostly standards – but it does include 2 strong originals, "Crazy Chris" and "Lyons Busy", as well as some Brubeck-ized versions of tunes like "Frenesi", "Mamselle", and "At A Perfume Counter". Dave Brubeck Quartet is sublime early work from pianist Dave Brubeck – already recording here with the amazing Paul Desmond on alto sax – in the kind of magical blend that would bring both players great fame by the end of the 50s! Even at this early point, the subtle modern touches are perfectly in place – that blend of space, sound, color, and tone that made the Brubeck/Desmond team so unique – recorded here without any other gimmicks or trappings to get in the way. The set mostly features shorter versions of standards – including "Stardust", "Just One Of Those Things", "Alice In Wonderland", and "All The Things You Are" – but it also features an amazing 14 minute take on "At A Perfume Counter", with really extended solo lines from Desmond! Really early work from the team of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond – cut years before their hit fame at Columbia, when Brubeck was first cooking up his modernist combo, and recording for Fantasy Records on the west coast. The set brings together a few early albums – Jazz At The Blackhawk and Jazz At Storyville – both harder to find sets that show Brubeck mostly working on turning out new versions of older standards, filtered through his modern take to time structures and phrasing. Titles include "Jeepers Creepers", "Let's Fall In Love", "I May Be Wrong", "Over The Rainbow", "Tea For Two", and "This Can't Be Love". CD

The stunning debut of CCR – a record that still burns with an undeniable fire after all these years! Sure, all the elements here have been copped by many – the fuzzy guitar, lean bluesy groove, and raw soul-inspired vocals of John Fogerty – but the way the group puts them together is tremendous – and there's a lean, raw vibe to the whole record that instantly communicates the urgency the group's music had back in the second half of the 60s! Even the group's take on other artists' songs never sound dated at all – and taken together, the mix of material on the record is even greater than the sum of its parts – with a power that punches more than any of these songs on their own. The whole thing's also a great testament to Fogerty's guitar skills too – with some raw solos that blow away most of the blues rock pretenders of the period – on titles that include "Get Down Woman", "The Working Man", "Gloomy", "Walking On The Water", "Ninety Nine & A Half", "Porterville", and "Susie Q". A great lost chapter in the Larry Mizell story – a record that's not nearly as well known as Mizell-produced jams for Bobbi Humphrey or Johnny Hammond, but which is every bit as great! Roger Glenn's a funky flute player with a really great groove – California groovy, with just a touch of Latin – served up here with some great Mizell-infused touches – that rolling rhythm on the bottom, soaring instrumentation on the top, and some great Latin elements that are wrapped up warmly in the fusion! There's plenty of great keyboards, too – played both by Larry Mizell, and also by Mark Soskin – a range of Fender Rhodes, Arp, mini-moog, and more – all adding in the right sort of warmth to Roger's flute, and the album's rich array of percussion. Fantasy, Early 60s. Used ... $3.99
An amazing record – one with a depth that goes way beyond its simple roots, and which has gone on to become one of the true Christmas classics of the 20th Century! Although a Christmas soundtrack, the album's more of a tapestry of sadness, longing, and loss – the best qualities that always emerge in true Christmas classics – underscoring the blue side of the season that's always lurking around corners from the happier moments. Vince Guaraldi penned this score back when he was a rising talent on the San Francisco scene – and in a way, it was almost his musical contribution to the cartoon that made it such a lasting favorite – even over and above the appeal of the famous animated characters. Most tunes are simple piano ones, but played with a phrasing that's beautifully timeless – and the few vocal numbers feature voices from the cartoon, singing softly with the music. Titles include the classic "Linus and Lucy" – plus "My Little Drum", "Christmas Is Coming", "Christmas Time Is Here", "Skating", and "Fur Elise". CD

This 50th Anniversary edition features the core album, a replica of the 1965 book by Charles Schultz, and four double-sided postcards – similar to those from the early Fantasy Records version! Also includes the bonus CD Peanuts Portraits – key character themes penned and played by the legendary Vince Guaraldi, in a set of recordings that features both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes! A few cuts get really funky, too – the electric numbers, which remind us that back when we were wee ones, watching these cartoons, Guaraldi was already shaping our consciousness with his great way with a groove. The package is one that really gets right to the heart of Guaraldi's genius – and shakes free of some of the holiday spirit of other Peanuts jazz packages, to get into some incredibly groovy numbers that include "Peppermint Patty", "Joe Cool", "Charlie's Blues (variation)", "Blue Charlie Brown (version 2)", "Frieda (alternate)", "Little Birdie", and "Schroeder (alternate)" – plus the famous "Linus & Lucy". An overlooked chapter of the 70s genius of Woody Herman – and the kind of album that shows him continuing to grow strongly, many years after his initial fame! The record takes off ambitiously from some of the funkier Herman sessions of the start of the 70s – and features the core group augmented by the Houston Symphony Orchestra on side one – offering up larger backings to color in the sophisticated sounds of the tunes "Variation On A Scene" and "Children Of Lima", both jazz suites penned by Alan Broadbent, who'd done great work with Herman's group. Side two is back to straighter big band numbers – tunes that burst out with a lot of life and energy, and which have a few of the soulful stylings of Herman's previous funk. Highlights include great covers of "25 Or 6 To 4" and "Where Is The Love", plus a version of Broadbent's driving "Far In". CD

Freddie Hubbard makes a sweet splash for the 80s in this great little set – one of his last electric outings before a return to more acoustic modes! The vibe's a bit leaner than some of his late 70s albums, with most of the electricity coming from the bass, and from the keyboards by Chester Thompson or Louis Small – but the record's definitely got that soaring sense of flow that Freddie brought to his best work of this nature – that new sound he unlocked during the 70s, which finally seemed to find the right voice for that mighty horn of his! Jeanne Tracy sings a bit of vocals on the set, bringing in a touch of soul to the album – and titles include the stepping classic "Touchdown" – plus "Splash", "Mystic Lady", "I'm Yours", "Jarri", "You're Gonna Lose Me", and "Sister Stine". A wonderful album from Pleasure – a group who were already great before, but who really seem to hit a great new level with this late 70s classic! Pleasure started out as a sweet jazz/funk combo with a great edge to their music – but by the time of this set, they'd actually gotten even tighter and better – but all without losing their depth at all! Most of the group's contemporaries just got slick and commercial – but instead, Pleasure found a way to hone their skills wonderfully – and take on some new spacey and electric touches in the process – definitely pointing towards the funky future promised in the title. The set's filled with some of the funkiest and most soulful moments of the group's career – including "Space is the Place", which has great funky drums on the intro; the mellow "Thoughts of Old Flames", a real stunner with a great moody feel; and the classic "Glide", a great dancefloor groover that still stands up well. Other tracks are all great too – and include "Universal", "Strong Love", "Nothin To It", and "Dedication To The Past". CD

Fantasy, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Massive Bay Area sounds from the 70s – a mighty meeting of organist Merl Saunders and Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia – both coming together in a setting that offers up a wicked blend of jazz, funk, blues, and rock! Jerry definitely sings a bit, but the longer tracks show a stronger focus on his legendary guitar work – and Saunders handles a few different keyboards, all with equally deft touches – as he and Garcia really open up as the set rolls on. Titles include "Keepers", "Positively 4th Street", "Someday Baby", "Like A Road", "It Ain't No Use", "That's All Right Mama", "Space", and "It Takes A Lot To Laugh". LP, Vinyl record album

Spiders WebbI Don't Know What's On Your Mind ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A real treasure from the Cali scene of the 70s – the one and only album from drummer Spider Webb – and a wicked batch of bass-heavy grooves throughout! Spider's drums are definitely great, and his offbeat vocals are completely charming, too – but the basslines are what really drive the record – often with a slightly skittish quality that seems to hint at the more dynamic dancefloor modes to come on the New York scene of the early 80s – yet still fused nicely here onto a Fantasy Records blend of jazz, funk, and soul! Carol Kaye plays some mighty nice guitar on the record – and titles include the classic groover "I've Learned From My Burns" – plus "Carry Me Through", "Good Thing", "Reggae Bump", "I Don't Know What's On Your Mind", "Soft Wind", and "Spider's Webb". Cal TjaderCal Tjader/Stan Getz Sextet (remastered) ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1958. Used ... $5.99
A killer record from the late 50s – and one that hints at all the sides Stan Getz would take in later years – his bossa sessions, his vibes quartet with Gary Burton, and the playful lyricism of his recordings with Chick Corea! The set was recorded in San Francisco, when Stan had that great bassist Scott LaFaro in his group, and when he was brought into the studio by Fantasy to meet with local talents like Cal Tjader, Eddie Duran, and Vince Guaraldi. Billy Higgins is also added on drums, giving the set a lively songlike sound that's just great. The group works incredibly well together, and it's a shame they only really gelled for this rare non-Verve session. Titles include "Big Bear", "Crow's Nest", and "Ginza Samba". CD

✨✧ Cal TjaderConcert On The Campus ... LP
Fantasy, Early 60s. Very Good ... $14.99
A nice early Cal Tjader set for Fantasy – featuring Cal's vibes set up in a piano and percussion mode – a bit like work by the George Shearing group, but with a hipper sound, and more of a firey Latin finish, thanks to percussion by the likes of Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria. Lonnie Hewitt's the pianist on the set keeping things in a nice soulful vein, and titles include "Cuban Fantasy", "SS Groove", "Love For Sale", "Rezo", "Moment In Madrid", "Goodbye", "Then I'll Be Tired Of You" and "Theme For Duke". ✨✧ Cal TjaderJazz At The Blackhawk ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1957. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A real standout session from Cal Tjader – a straight jazz side from the late 50s, recorded with a hip group that includes Vince Guaraldi on piano, Gene Wright on bass, and Al Torre on drums. Although Cal's possibly better-remembered for his Latin work of the time, the record is a good reminder that the Tjader approach to vibes worked equally well in a more standard jazz setting – especially when paired with the lightly lyrical piano genius of a young Vince Guaraldi! The set was captured live at the Blackhawk in San Francisco – practically home turf for Cal and the group – with a sound that's easy, laidback, and very nicely grooving! Titles include "Lover Come Back To Me", "Bill B", "Land's End", "Thinking Of You MJQ", and "Two For Blues Suite". CD

Johnny Guitar WatsonListen (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Fantasy/Culture Factory, 1973. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
Quite possibly the rarest of all Johnny Guitar Watson albums – and his first from the 70s – a mindblowing batch of trippy soul tunes that sounds far different than much of his later work! Johnny's not yet in the funky mode here – and he's working in a very cool flanged-out approach that has his vocals tripping lightly with his guitar – in a spacious soul mode that captures some of the energy of Shuggie Otis at the time. The overall sound is incredibly righteous – and the album's a delight throughout! Titles include "Lovin You", "If I Had The Power", "You Bring Love", "I Get A Feeling", and "You're The Sweetest Thing I've Ever Had". CD

✨✧ David Axelrod & OthersAxelrod Chronicles ... CD
Fantasy, Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
It's great to see that David Axelrod's finally getting his due – and this reissue of material from Fantasy is one of the first reissues of his work in the US! Most cuts here are much more jazz-based than Axelrod's higher-concept material under his own name for Capitol in the late 60s – and the music represents Axe's key move to Fantasy after bigger label fame – a move that he made with Cannonball Adderley, who also figures in on some of these tracks. The CD features 8 tracks from Axelrod's Full Axe album – a tasty bit of funky fusion that's one of his best jazz-oriented releases – plus a sampling of tracks from other albums he produced and/or arranged for Fantasy. Titles from Full Axe include "My Family", "Mucho Chupar", "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing", and "Everything Counts" – and other tracks include "Cantaro" and "Solitario" by Gene Ammons, "Bach" and "Sierra Morena" by Hampton Hawes, "Quit It" by Nat Adderley, "Goodbye So Long" by Funk Inc, and "Stayin Place" from the Big Man 2LP set. ✨✧ Tony Bennett/Bill EvansTony Bennett/Bill Evans Album ... LP
Fantasy, 1975. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Titles include "When In Rome", "Some Other Time", "The Touch Of Your Lips", "My Foolish Heart", "Waltz For Debby", and "Young & Foolish". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ BlackbyrdsBlackbyrds/Flying Start ... CD
Fantasy, 1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 incredible albums from The Blackbyrds – back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Blackbyrds record – a funky jazz treasure, and the band's landmark first album! The Blackbyrds were a legendary 70s combo that were discovered by Donald Byrd while he was teaching at Howard University – and they had a tight style that mixed raw funk influences with smoother jazz playing, creating a sound that was different from many of their contemporaries, and which pushed funk and soul into a whole new level. Byrd's work with the band was as groundbreaking as Larry Mizell's work on his own Blue Note albums – and coincidentally, Larry Mizzell's Sky High Productions handles the studio chores for the set – but in a way that's much more sharply funky than his albums with Byrd! Titles include the tight choppy funk tracks "Do It, Fluid" and "Funky Junkie", plus other nice groovers like "Summer Love", "Gut Level", and "The Runaway". Flying Start has a beautifully put-together feel – tight enough to crossover somewhat big with a larger audience than the group's previous effort – but still filled with the kind of righteous energy that first got them going, a sublime mix of jazzy rhythms and soulful elements, all held together tightly by production from Donald Byrd. Tracks include the big hit "Walking In Rhythm", which was an oft-spun 45 back in the day – plus some great funk moments, like the tasty "Spaced Out", the choppy "The Baby", and the captivating "Blackbyrds Theme". Other cuts include "Future Children Future Hopes", "I Need You", and "April Showers". CD

Fantasy/Decision, 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the sharpest, jazziest funk you'll ever hope to hear – a smoking collection of the legendary 70s work by The Blackbyrds on Fantasy Records! The group started as a jazz combo under Donald Byrd's supervision – right at a time when Byrd was making his own fantastic funky records in the 70s – but working for the Bay Area Fantasy label, they really took off into an amazing groove that was all their own – still informed by jazz, but free to open up to lots of funk and soul elements too – sometimes with vocals in the lead, sometimes more focus on the kinds of solos that always set them apart from all their contemporaries! The cuts have some wonderful keyboard work from a young Kevin Toney – who's gone onto a lot of fame over the years – and production on all cuts is either by Larry Mizell, Donald Byrd, or George Duke – key 70s jazz funk forces who keep things mighty tight in the studio! The package features work from all Blackbyrds albums of the 70s – including the Cornbread Earl & Me soundtrack, and the Night Grooves remix set – and the package features 25 titles that include "Enter In", "Party Land", "Do It Fluid", "Gut Level", "Summer Love", "I Need You", "The Baby", "Blackbyrds' Theme", "City Life", "Rock Creek Park", "Walking In Rhythm", "A Hot Day Today", "Wilford's Gone", "One Gun Salute", "Supernatural Feeling", "Mysterious Vibes", and "Soft & Easy". Fantasy, 1953. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
CD

Rare small combo work from Duke Ellington – just the sort of excellent later-years material that follows nicely in the spirit of his Money Jungle and Live At The Whitney albums! As with those records, you'll hear an Ellington here who's a hell of a modernist – a wonderful talent in a piano trio setting, which gives him lots of space to open up and try out new ideas he might never have reached in some of his larger group dates. The material here is from two different sessions – one in 1966, with John Lamb on bass and Sam Woodyard on drums – the other from 1970, with Victor Gaskin and Paul Kondziela on bass, and Rufus Jones on drums.
