✨✧ Sharon Mhati Chatam (Gianfranco Reberberi)Fantasy (with bonus download) ... LP
Cinedelic (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99
With a cover like that, it's easy to see where the fantasy in the title is going – certainly not into the musky world of swords and sorcery, and instead into the realm of slinky sounds that are right at home in the Italian sound library world of the 70s! The music here has all the warm erotic touches of some of the better-known soundtrack material from the time – put together by Gianfranco Reverberi, who you might know from some of his crossover prog classics – but delivered with a lean instrumental mode that often has a keyboard as the lead instrument, over slow-stepping basslines and some nice washes of strings used in just the right way. Some tunes have a gentle funk vibe, others are sweetly sexy – and the set also features versions of some bigger hits from the time, with titles that include "Daniel", "Sylvia's Mother", "Fire Shadows In The Sunset", "Vincent", "She Was Not An Angel", "E Poi", "Quel Che Non Saprei Dirti Mai A Parole", and "Closed In A Drugstore". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes download! Please Note – the shrink wrap on these copies have split along the openings, they are however still new and unplayed!)

✨✧ Coke EscovedoDisco Fantasy ... LP
Mercury, 1977. Sealed ... $9.99
Not as strong as Coke's earlier work on Mercury – but not a bad album overall, thanks to some tight production work by Pat Gleeson, who's also most likely playing the cool keyboards on the record. Most of the tunes are aimed at the dancefloor – not really disco numbers, but the sort of fast funk jazz-based tunes that showed up in the later years of CTI and Kudu, especially on albums arranged by David Matthews. There's a female vocalist on most of the tracks, although she's not named in the notes – and titles include "Soul Support", "Won't You Gimme The Funk", "Who Do You Want To Love", "Trash Man", "Something Special", and "Hot Soul Single". LP, Vinyl record album

Raphael GulazziReality & Fantasy ... CD
Sugar/WEA (Italy), 2011. Used ... $0.99
Heavy piano and raspy vocals from Raphael Gulazzi – an artist with a boldly jazz feel, and a classic sense of spirit we'd put right up there between the best recent work from Mario Biondi and Jamie Cullum! Like Mario, Raphael is Italian, but mostly sings in English – accenting the vocals nicely with a rich tone that's mighty nice – and like Cullum, some of his best grooves have these hard-driving piano lines that set things up wonderfully – grabbing us strongly even before the vocals come in! The set features a bonus Gilles Peterson remix of "Reality & Fantasy" – and other titles include "Icarus", "Tuesday", "A Three Second Breath", "Behind The Sunrise", "Scandalize Me", and "Lady O". CD

El (UK), Late 40s/1950s. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Most folks know Bernard Herrmann for his famous moody soundtracks for Alfred Hitchcock, or his late life genius on the Taxi Driver score – but Herrmann also had a great ear for more fantastic styles, too – and could turn his dark orchestrations into other cool spacey and watery styles too! This collection brings together the best of that music – work that had an undeniable impact on some of the Italian exotic scoring of the late 50s and early 60s, and which also has a bit more intimacy and character than the American soundtracks for bigger, more epic productions. CD features a total of 31 tracks, with a number of selections each from the films The Day The Earth Stood Still, 7th Voyage Of Sinbad, Ghost & Mrs Muir, Beneath The 12 Mile Reef, and Journey To The Center Of The Earth. Sean Khan with Hermeto PascoalPalmares Fantasy ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
The deepest record we've heard so far from London's Sean Khan – and that's saying a lot, as we really loved his previous albums! Sean got his start on the broken beat scene a number of years back, and has slowly been evolving into more of a jazz-based artist – which he hits fantastically here in the company of the legendary Hermeto Pascoal, who plays Fender Rhodes and melodica on the record too! But honestly, even without Hermeto, Sean's pretty fantastic on his own – as his alto sax lines have this beautifully sharp edge, as does his work on flute and soprano – these soulful currents that almost rival recent work by Nat Birchall and some of his contemporaries. Other players include Ivan Conti on drums and Jim Mullin on electric guitar – and Heidi Vogel sings on two tracks, and Sabrina Mahleiros on one more. Titles include "Moment Of Collapse", "Waltz For Hermeto", "Palmares Fantasy", "Montreux", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "The Blonde", and "The Conversation". CD

Van McCoyMy Favorite Fantasy ... LP
MCA, 1978. Near Mint- ... $3.99
An excellent album of smooth soul tracks, and maybe Van's best record of the 70s! The record shows Van sitting at the piano in an intimate setting – ala Barry White – and it's got a similar Love Unlimited Orchestra approach, with much large backing behind Van's voice, and a very full instrumental sound. Van sings lead vocals, which aren't always that great – but he more than makes up for it with some great piano and keyboard work, and some wonderful soul songwriting and arranging that recall his best uptown moments of the late 60s. The record has a few uptempo hustle-type tracks, but they're all pretty darn great soul songs, and there's loads of great mellow soul moments woven in to make the record a nice album of ballads and groovers. Titles include "Before & After", "Wings Of Love", "My Favorite Fantasy", "That's The Story Of My Life", and "You're So Right For Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie ParkerBird At St Nicks (Fantasy) ... LP
Fantasy/Debut, 1950. Very Good+ ... $23.99
Posthumous issue of an early 50s live set by Charlier Parker – one of the many that were rushed to the public in the years after his early death. The set, like many of the other live ones from the time, isn't recorded that well – but the music is still pretty wonderful. There's a real focus on Bird in the way the microphone was set up – so although you hear the rest of the band comping in the background, the album almost works like a session of solo sax work by Parker – as his alto is right out front in the mix, playing with a faltering style at times – but in a way that only seems to deepen our vision of his genius. Players include Red Rodney on trumpet and Al Haig on piano – and titles include "Ornithology", "Star Eyes", "Visa", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", and "Confirmation". LP, Vinyl record album

Lalo SchifrinNew Fantasy ... LP
Verve, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $18.99
The great Lalo Schifrin plays piano and leads a crack group of studio players through some larger orchestral material with a nice jazzy feel! The overall approach is similar to Lalo's classic 60s soundtrack work – with nice solos arching out over sweeping strings and orchestral passages, and all tracks written with a good deal of punch, plus lots of little Latiny influences. Easily one of his most perfectly conceived albums of the 60s – and pretty darn tough to find. Tracks are long and titles include "El Salon Mexico", "New Fantasy", "Sabre Dance", and "Prelude #2". Roundtable (Australia), 1972. New Copy ... $18.99 31.98
A beautiful underwater fantasy of sound library grooves – a set that's almost the Italian equivalent to the Inner Space soundtrack from Australia by Sven Libaek! Like that set, this one uses waves of instrumental energy to create an almost watery vibe – strings mixed with keyboards, often underlain by electric bass – all at a level that's occasionally funky, always dreamy, and plenty darn cool throughout! The style continues some of the Italian soundtrack modes of a few years before, but with more fluttering elements that emphasize the "sea" in the title – on tracks that include "Underwater Fantasy", "Tempest Force 8", "High Tide", "Surging Surf", "Calm Sea", and "In The Ocean Depths". The record features Shaw working with a group that includes a number of like-minded players – Frank Strozier, Ronnie Matthews, and Stafford James – all of whom fit together perfectly with Shaw to craft some strident tunes with the same sort of modal groove and soulful spiritualism as his work on the Moontrane record. ✨✧ Roy AyersLove Fantasy ... CD
Polydor/PTG (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Roy Ayers albums of all time – and an overlooked gem from Roy's late 70s years at Polydor! This set's a bit more laidback and less clubby than some other Ayers work of the period – which means it's got this wonderful jazzy groove throughout – a sweet mix of midtempo modern soul and the vibes-based style that Roy kept on perfecting at the time. Tracks are longer than usual, and they really open up in a way that fits the title – slinky and seductive, but never soppy or commercial at all – that really special blend of warmth and wisdom that's always made Roy Ayers so great. Titles include the sublime title track "Love Fantasy", which begins with Roy chatting up some girl in the intro, then sliding into a nice smooth jazz funk tip on the chorus – plus the great cut "Sigh", a sweet little bubbling number with a wonderfully breathy quality! Other titles include "Believe In Yourself", "Betcha Gonna", "Baby Bubba", and "Rock Your Roll". CD

Mercury/PTG (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A crowning moment from the Chicago scene of the late 70s – the second Mercury album from Heaven & Earth, and a stunner all the way through! The set's an undisputed groover right from the start – thanks to the massive arrangements from the great Floyd Morris – an artist who did some excellent work in the Chicago indie soul scene in the 60s, including some classic funky 45s – and whose work here definitely gives Heaven & Earth a sharper edge than most other acts of their type at the time! You can definitely hear Floyd's touch in the funky bottom of the two-part classic "I Feel A Groove Under My Feet", and in the riffing guitar of "Poetry In A Box" – and the group also show their warmer, mellower side nicely on cuts like "Let's Get It Together", "I'm In Love With Your Lady", "I Only Have Eyes For You", and "Whole Lot Of Love" – nice warm numbers with great harmonies and gentle stepping grooves! ✨✧ TrafficMr Fantasy (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Island, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The incredible first album from Traffic – a record that was already way ahead of the pack, and would set the tone for so many other sounds and modes from others in years to come! At some level, the group were just coming off the big beat group years in the UK – that time of strong inspiration from American soul, jazz, and R&B – but they're already pushing all these elements in very different ways – certainly psychedelic, as you'd guess from the image on the cover – but also still holding onto a lot of the soul and jazz that first inspired them! To our ears, the reed work of Chris Woods is as important to the record as the Hammond from Steve Winwood, guitar from Dave Mason, and drums from Jim Capaldi – plus the vocals from all three – and in addition to the classic title cut "Mr Fantasy", other tunes include "Dealer", "House For Everyone", "Berkshire Poppies", "No Face No Name No Number", and "Coloured Rain". ✨✧ TransportDisco Fantasy Land ... LP
Albina Music Trust, 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Never-issued work from this obscure Portland group – a combo who definitely deliver the disco fantasy of the title, but in ways that are more funk-based overall! Transport has ties to the Gangsters and Nu Shooz, and the vibe here is more that of a local funk group picking up the pace a bit for the late 70s generation – but still keeping things lean with tight combo instrumentation that's heavy on basslines and keyboards – topped with playful vocals that give things a clubby vibe, but which also have a much deeper execution than the usual disco chorus mode! Maybe it's the lack of strings or commercial production, but the whole thing feels much hipper than you'd expect – nicely righteous currents running through tunes that include "Move Your Body To The Music", "Disco Fantasy Land", "Stay With Me", and a nice remake of "Always There". A classic from Cannoball and producer-partner David Axelrod – truly great stuff and maybe even better than the Zodiac set Cannonball did for Capitol! The formula is similar to that one – with David Axelrod producing, electric keyboards by Hal Galper and George Duke, spacey solos by Cannonball and Nat Adderley, and some very hip recitations by Rick Holmes on love, sex, and the zodiac! Holmes is best known as the chappie who cut "Remember To Remember" years later with Roy Ayers – but this album's got a similar "wisdom and knowledge" feel that's pretty wonderful. The 2 great albums by Big Star – back-to-back on CD! #1 Record is simply one of the best rock albums of the 70s – partly remembered as a defining moment in power pop, but to us there's a depth of emotion here that goes way beyond chords and choruses, and sinks into our very souls every time we listen to it! Indespensible Memphis rock, to say the very least. Titles include "Feel", "Ballad Of El Goodo", "In The Street", "The India Song", "When My Baby's Beside Me", "Give Me Another Chance", "Watch The Sunrise" and more. Radio City is also one of 70s rock's finest moments. With Chris Bell out of the picture, one could successfully argue the traits that it lacks from the first album, but this thing stands up as work of genius all its own – twith a raw, shambling immediacy to the songs that cut incredibly deep. Amazing stuff all around – totally indispensable! A pretty righteous album of soul tunes from Kimberly Briggs – aka Kim Tolliver – very down-home and rootsy, with a feel that's clearly picking up on the inroads made by Aretha Franklin in the late 60s, and pushing the envelope even farther with some of the cross-cultural excesses of the Bay Area scene. Arrangements are large and ambitious – ostensibly handled by Freddy Briggs, who also produced the album. A classic album from Dave – recorded at Oberlin College, the mid-Ohio haven of bohemiana, and a growing hotbed of jazz activity centered around students in the college's conservatory of music. Dave and crew made the trip at the request of the kids – breaking from their mostly San Francisco-based recording career to cut what would end up becoming a very successful album in Dave's catalog, and begin a whole "at" or "goes to" series in his career. The group's the early quartet with Paul Desmond, Lloyd Davis, and Ron Crotty – and tunes include long and jamming versions of "The Way You Look Tonight", "How High The Moon", and "Stardust". CD

Really early work from the team of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond – cut years before their hit fame at Columbia, when Brubeck was first cooking up his modernist combo, and recording for Fantasy Records on the west coast. This harder to find set's got Brubeck mostly working on turning out new versions of older standards, filtered through his modern take to time structures and phrasing. Titles include "Over The Rainbow", "Lady Be Good", "Give A Little Whistle", "Tea For Two","Crazy Chris", 'This Can't Be Love" and "You Go To My Head". LP, Vinyl record album

Very nice 2LP set that brings together some of Lenny's best moments recorded for Fantasy – including many that aren't currently on CD. The album includes the classic "Thank You, Masked Man", plus "Lima Ohio", "Dijinni In the Candy Store", "Comic At The Palladium", "How To Relax Your Colored Friends At parties", and "The Sound". The material is fantastic, and there's a booklet with a great set of notes on Lenny by Ralph Gleason. LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy, Mid 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Issued after Lenny's death, but a record that contains some of his best bits ever! In fact, the later date of the album probably allowed Fantasy to get away with some rawer material, so you'll hear more of the "true" side of Lenny – especially on the album's live tracks. We think this stuff is pure genius, and it's more than just comedy – it's verbal improvisation on a scale that would match the best jazz soloist. As proof, listen to tracks like "Fat Boy", "The Sound", and "Thank You, Masked Man". LP, Vinyl record album

An overlooked album from Clover – a great Bay Area group from the start of the 70s – best known for later work with Elvis Costello and Huey Lewis! Clover is a great start for a very cool group – a set that definitely draws on some of the "out of the city" sounds of the post-Haight scene in SF – as you might guess from the cover – but which also has some funkier undercurrents too, and almost a garagey mix of soul amidst the rootsy elements – one that really shows the evolution of a group like this from the styles of a few years before! Fantasy/OJC, 1968/1970. Used ... $12.99
A killer album – one of Duke Ellington's best from the later years! The record features excellent writing from Duke – in a Latin mode, obviously, but touched with these incredible orchestrations that bring all sorts of weird twists and turns to the grooves, yet still manage to keep everything swinging nicely! The result is a rare album of brilliance – one that's vaguely similar to the Clarke Boland Big Band's Latin Kaleidoscope album, but with a genius that's all it's own. The album's got all the modernist touches of late Duke – but man, it also swings like a mofo, and with a really groovy sound – and the great Paul Gonsalves brings some wonderful solo work to the entire session. Obscure work by Betty Everett – but very nice! Both sides were arranged by Donny Hathaway, and produced by Betty's old boss at Vee Jay, Clarence Carter. "I Got To Tell Somebody" is a great little number – at about a midtempo pace, sung out proudly about Betty's new love, and set to arrangements by Donny that give the cut the right dose of honesty needed to carry it off. A killer record from the late 50s – and one that hints at all the sides Stan would take in later years – his bossa sides, his vibes quartet with Gary Burton, and the playful lyricism of his recordings with Chick Corea. The set was recorded in San Francisco, when Stan had that great bassist Scott LaFaro in his group, and when he was brought into the studio by Fantasy to meet with local talents like Cal Tjader, Eddie Duran, and Vince Guaraldi. Billy Higgins is also added on drums, giving the set a lively songlike sound that's just great. The group works incredibly well together, and it's a shame they only really gelled for this rare non-Verve session. Titles include "Big Bear", "Crow's Nest", "Liz-Anne", and "Ginza Samba". CD

Allen GinsbergAllen Ginsberg Reads Howl & Other Poems (70s pressing) ... LP
Fantasy, 1959. Sealed ... $24.99
Maybe one of the coolest albums of poetry ever recorded – a set that features a young, pre-hippie Allen Ginsberg – delivering his epic poem Howel, plus some other key works too. The young Ginsberg's voice is great – and really fills the works with a lot of bitterness and cynicism – with maybe more of a beat-era presentation than you'd know from his other later records, especially the music ones. This is one of the few albums that San Francisco-based Fantasy records cut of famous beat poets reading their own work – and it's probably one of the most enduring! Ginsberg reads "Howl", "Footnote To Howl", "Sunflower Sutra", "Supermarket In California", and other poems from the late 50s – and there's no musical accompaniment at all. LP, Vinyl record album

Vince GuaraldiCast Your Fate To The Wind – Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1962. Used ... $4.99
A beautiful record of light, lyrical piano jazz – and one of the best-selling jazz albums ever on Fantasy Records! Vince Guaraldi started the set as a tribute to the film Black Orpheus – and some of the album features his nice renditions of Jobim/Bonfa tunes like "Manha De Carnaval" and "Samba De Orpheus". However, Guaraldi also managed to pen his own amazing track – "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" – a lyrical romping piano instrumental that went onto become a huge charting instrumental hit during the 60s. The track's been heard a million times over the years, but it's still pretty darn great – and it's surrounded in a nice set with other tunes that have the same feel – including "O Nosso Amour", "Alma-Ville", "Since I Fell For You", and "Moon River". The music of Vince Guaraldi and Peanuts isn't just for Christmas – although Vince racked up plenty of fame over the years for his Christmas-themed tunes – and this collection's a great reminder that the Guaraldi genius graced a whole host of different Charlie Brown cartoons in the 60s and 70s – all with results that are completely sublime! The music here is from a host of different small combos, used in a number of different Holiday-themed cartoons over the years – and Vince plays piano with accompaniment that shifts from track to track, and includes a bit of trumpet from Tom Harrell, guitar from Eddie Duran, and timbales from Benny Velarde. The album may well be worth it alone for the classic "Joe Cool" – a tune that may well be our favorite from the Peanuts cartoons – and but the set includes lots of other greatness, with titles that include "Linus & Lucy", "Thanksgiving Theme", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", "Schroeder", "Charlie's Blues", "Charlie Brown Theme", "Surfin Snoopy", "Heartburn Waltz", and "Track Meet". Fantasy/Wounded Bird, 1974. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
An overlooked chapter of the 70s genius of Woody Herman – and the kind of album that shows him continuing to grow strongly, many years after his initial fame! The record takes off ambitiously from some of the funkier Herman sessions of the start of the 70s – and features the core group augmented by the Houston Symphony Orchestra on side one – offering up larger backings to color in the sophisticated sounds of the tunes "Variation On A Scene" and "Children Of Lima", both jazz suites penned by Alan Broadbent, who'd done great work with Herman's group. Side two is back to straighter big band numbers – tunes that burst out with a lot of life and energy, and which have a few of the soulful stylings of Herman's previous funk. Highlights include great covers of "25 Or 6 To 4" and "Where Is The Love", plus a version of Broadbent's driving "Far In". CD

Very righteous work from Esther Marrow – a soul sister who sings with a hell of a lot of power! The set's an overlooked gem in the Fantasy catalog of the 70s, and it's one of only two secular soul albums cut by Marrow – and quite possibly the best of the bunch, too! Esther's got some great help on the set from arrangers Richard Tee, Bernard Purdie, and Bobby Scott – each of whom set Marrow up with some small group backing that keeps things tight and soulful throughout – thanks in big part to the drum work, which is handled by Purdie, Jimmy Johnson, and Idris Muhammad. Other players include Tee on organ and piano, Cornell Dupree on guitar, and Ralph McDonald on congas – whose percussion really helps shape the sound of most of the grooves. There's a horn section too – used sparingly – and there's also a bit of backing vocals from The Reflections, although Esther's pretty much in the lead on all numbers. Quite possibly the funkiest album ever from Pleasure – and that's saying a heck of a lot! And yes, those records are great, but usually have a few standout cuts – while this one works together perfectly – leading us in right away, then holding us rapt through some wonderful cuts that never let up – massive energy that few other funky combos could match, produced to perfection by the legendary Wayne Henderson. Titles include the wicked sample cut "I'm Mad", the bouncy "Pleasure For Your Pleasure", the spacey "Ghettos Of The Mind", the bumping "Let's Dance", and the tracks "Jammin With Pleasure", "Theme For The Moonchild", "2 For 1", "We Have So Much", and "The Love Of My Life". A wonderful album from Pleasure – a group who were already great before, but who really seem to hit a great new level with this late 70s classic! Pleasure started out as a sweet jazz/funk combo with a great edge to their music – but by the time of this set, they'd actually gotten even tighter and better – but all without losing their depth at all! Most of the group's contemporaries just got slick and commercial – but instead, Pleasure found a way to hone their skills wonderfully – and take on some new spacey and electric touches in the process – definitely pointing towards the funky future promised in the title. The set's filled with some of the funkiest and most soulful moments of the group's career – including "Space is the Place", which has great funky drums on the intro; the mellow "Thoughts of Old Flames", a real stunner with a great moody feel; and the classic "Glide", a great dancefloor groover that still stands up well. Other tracks are all great too – and include "Universal", "Strong Love", "Nothin To It", and "Dedication To The Past". CD

Fantasy, 1977. Very Good- ... $19.99
Joyous grooves indeed – the second album by this legendary 70s jazzy soul outfit – and a landmark album in the Fantasy Records Bay Area funk mode! The record will forever be remembered for the cut "Joyous" – a monster groover with a killer hook, strong funky playing, and a searing tenor solo that wails for about a minute before the vocals even come in! Wayne Henderson produced the record – and it's very much in the mode of work that he was doing for other groups at Fantasy, but also sounds a bit like later jazz funk groups, such as Breakwater or Smoke – tight, but never uptight – funky, but never with the kind of grit you'd find in the indie underground. The vocals are a bit in the Average White Band mode, and the instrumental playing is top-shelf all the way – a monster mix that's possibly carried off better here than on any other album by the group! The album includes 2 instrumentals, "Selim" and "Sassafras Girl", as well as the vocal tracks "Tune In", "Let Me Be The One", and "Can't Turn You Loose". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Quintet (Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, & OthersJazz At Massey Hall ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1953. Used ... $3.99
A legendary concert – recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto, with a previously-unmatched quintet of superstar bop players – Charlie Parker on alto, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, and Max Roach on drums – all coming together in a performance that's a bit rough at times, but which more than makes up for that roughness in its own sense of history! This single LP features the quintet performances from the date (others featured the trio of Powell, Mingus, and Roach) – on titles that include "Perdido", "Salt Peanuts", "All The Things You Are", "Wee", and "Hot House". Bola SeteBola Sete Trios – Tour De Force (Bossa Nova/Tour De Force) ... CD
Fantasy, 1962/1963. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Brazilian guitar genius galore – 2 rare Fantasy albums from guitarist Bola Sete! First up is Bossa Nova – a date that was issued in the 60s with a title to cash in on the growing bossa craze in the US – and which stands as one of Sete's best for Fantasy Records! The sound is very much in keeping with some of the guitar-driven bossa of the time – work by Luiz Bonfa or Charlie Byrd, particularly in the way that Sete's spare acoustic guitar is mixed in with some lively percussion, plus bass from Ben Tucker and drums from Dave Bailey. Those two players really help the album find a nice little groove – and the whole thing dances along nicely, with tracks that include "Wagging Along", "Ash Wednesday", "Samba In The Perrotaoquei", "Brazilian Bossa Galore", "Without You", "My Different World", "Sweet Thing", and "Dilemma". Tour De Force offers a great range of different modes from guitarist Bola Sete – not just bossa-styled groovers, but other tunes that show a deeper, more introspective side of his talents! Bola's not afraid to break away from familiar, mainstream modes here – and given the early 60s date of the record, his sensitivity on quieter numbers is quite groundbreaking – a bit more like work from other players that wouldn't show up until later in the decade. Rhythm is by Fred Schrieber on bass and John Rae on drums, but there's also some moments that are more heavily oriented towards Bola's solo guitar. Titles include "Tour De Force", "Bouree", "A Noite Do Meu Bem", "Samba De Orpheus", "Moon River", and "Asturias". CD

Bola SeteVoodoo Village (The Incomparable Bola Sete/Autentico!) ... CD
Fantasy, 1964/1966. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
Two classic albums of bossa guitar from the legendary Bola Sete – back to back on one CD! First up is 1964's The Incomparable Bola Sete – a groovy set of bossa and samba-tinged guitar tracks from Bola Sete – recorded in California with a small combo that includes Monte Budwig on bass and Johnnie Rae on percussion. The tracks are shortish and with a slightly folksy quality – filled with the kind of warm expression that Bola had on acoustic guitar, showcased especially on the album's strong original tunes. Titles include "Original Joe's", "Just Another Love", "Be Bossa", "Sarava", "Bolido", and "Lamento De Negro". Autentico is an excellent groover from Sete – definitely more "autentico" than on some other 60s albums grooving nicely with a bossa sound, and backing by a good rhythm combo that includes Sebastian Neto on bass and Paulinho on drums! Titles include "Soul Samba", "Consolacao", "Brejeiro", "Baion Blues", and "Coisa". 19 tracks in all – and first time on CD for both albums! CD

✨✧ Side EffectWhat You Need ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Quite possibly the greatest album ever from Side Effect – a wonderful set that mixes their soulful harmonies with some killer jazz funk from Wayne Henderson! The album may be the most perfect realization of the groove that Henderson was going for during his At Home Productions years – lots of funky fusion in the instrumentation, but all directed towards a tighter, more soul-based style – that perfect contribution that Fantasy Records made to the world in the 70s – after labels like Blue Note and Columbia first started setting things down. Whatever the chronology, though, this set's a standout no matter how you slice it – damn catchy tunes, incredible vocals, and a set of rhythms that are every bit as hip today as they were back when first recorded – really genre-defining grooves that you'll definitely recognize in the album's classics "Always There" and "Keep That Same Old Feeling" – and will go on to love in the cuts "Life Is What You Make It", "Changes", "I Know You Can", "SOS", "Time Has No Ending", "Finally Found Someone", and "Honky Tonk Scat". Three PiecesVibes Of Truth ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A great little album of jazz funk – and the only record we've ever seen by this group! The 3 Pieces may not have lasted long in the record business, but this rare album from 1975 has made them legends on the rare groove scene for years. The record was cut during the height of the jazz funk years at Fantasy Records – and it features Donald Byrd handling the production chores, in a similar manner to the style that he used with the more famous Blackbyrds, who were also recording for Fantasy the time. The record features loads of electric piano and ARP, plus some tight and smooth guitar, and a nice rolling groove that is very catchy. A number of tracks have vocals – in kind of a subdued soul mode – and tracks include the groove classics "Backed Up Against The Wall", "Shortnin Bread", "Concrete Jungle", and "Vibes Of Truth". And believe it or not, there aren't any vibes on the album! CD

Cal TjaderExtremes (Cal Tjader Trio/Breathe Easy) ... CD
Fantasy, 1951/1977. Used ... $8.99
2 generations of work from vibist Cal Tjader – a session recorded in the 50s, and a session from the 70s – back to back on a single CD! First up is the landmark Cal Tjader Trio album from 1951 – one of Cal's first dates ever, and a sublime little set with piano from Vince Guaraldi! Even though the work is early for Cal, it's got an inherently rhythmic quality that really points towards his later Latin years – a quality that comes through on the first track, which features Tjader on bongos – and which keeps on strongly through the set, as Cal's vibes and Vince's piano really have a lively, percussive sense of interplay. The group's completed by Jack Weeks on bass – and titles include "Chopsticks Mambo", "Vibra Tharpe", "Lullaby Of The Leaves", and "Ivy". Breathe Easy is an overlooked 70s session from Cal Tjader – one that's definitely in the mellower mode of the spectrum, but in a way that's still plenty darn nice! The style here is part of Cal's move away from funkier work at the end of the decade – almost a return to tradition, but not a tradition that Cal ever had – as the overall approach is more spacious than before. The group features Allen Smith on trumpet, Monte Budwig on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – plus Hank Jones on piano, playing electric keys on about half the record, with a slow, spun-out quality that's really great! Titles include "Just Friends", "Goodbye", "Tangerine", "If You Could See Me Now", and "When Lights Are Low" – all in long takes! CD

✨✧ Stanley TurrentineHave You Ever Seen The Rain ... LP
Fantasy, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $8.99
Stanley blows it sweet, mellow, and soulfully – in this wonderful post-CTI session from the 70s! The set features some swirling larger arrangements from Gene Page – done with a bit of the CTI sound lurking in the mix, but also a more complicated groove that almost takes on soundtrack-like proportions at times – a warmly-flowing groove that's lush without being soppy, and which really sets Turrentine up nicely for some sophisticated, mature solos on tenor. Stan's got some great company on the record – including Patrice Rushen on keyboards, David T Walker on guitar, and Freddie Hubbard on trumpet – and although the set's laidback, it's a lot more soulful than you might think – almost like a hip mellow soul set from the time, but with tenor instead of vocals. Includes covers of the Earth Wind & Fire tunes "Reasons" and "That's The Way Of The World", plus the tracks "Touching You", "T's Dream", and "Have You Ever Seen The Rain". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy, Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $29.99
A cool collection of funky tracks from the Fantasy Records catalog of the 70s – the kind of hip cuts that were often better than mainstream disco – and which sometimes used a bit of jazz in the instrumentation as well! There's a few spacey themes here, but maybe not as much as you'd guess from the cover and title – but that's OK with us, because we can totally dig these down to earth grooves! Titles include "Let's Get Crackin" by Shock, "I Like It" by Players Association, "Funky Force" by Larry Williams, "Space Is The Place" by Pleasure, "Close Encounters Of A Funky Kind" by Fat Larry's Band, "Space Bass" by Slick, "Messages From The Stars (long wave mix)" by Rah Band, "Do It 4 U" by Starship Connection, and "Sparkle (single edit)" by Fat Larry's Band. Fantasy, 1975. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! The album's actually Cannonball's last full studio set, but it's also one of his greatest too – a very hip little record that features arrangements that are slightly bigger than before – almost a CTI sort of mode, with a similar CTI sense of space, sound, and timing! There's some great keyboards on the set – courtesy of George Duke and Mike Wolff – and other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Airto on percussion, Sam Jones and Walter Booker on bass, and Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy on drums. The keyboards lead off most numbers, but they're followed strongly by Cannon and Nat – both of whom open up wonderfully in the magical setting of the record! Titles include great new takes on "Sack O Woe", "Work Song", "Jive Samba", "74 Miles Away", "Walk Tall/Mercy Mercy Mercy", "Country Preacher", "Domination", and "This Here" – plus "Hi Fly" and "Hamba Nami". ✨✧ Tony Bennett/Bill EvansTony Bennett/Bill Evans Album ... LP
Fantasy, 1975. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
If you've ever doubted the real jazz sensibility of Tony Bennett, then this is an album to change your mind – because Tony's working here in a marvelously unadorned setting – with only the piano of Bill Evans to back him up! The record's a rare gem from years after Bennett was cracking the pop charts, but was willing to pull back to the jazz of his roots – and the session's equally rare for Evans, who rarely worked with vocalists at this point in his career. The simplicity of the album is its strength – and together, the pair really sound tremendous – slightly faltering at times, but in a way that exposes a sense of humanity you might not find in other records, especially those by Bennett. Titles include "When In Rome", "Some Other Time", "The Touch Of Your Lips", "My Foolish Heart", "Waltz For Debby", and "Young & Foolish". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic album from this legendary jazz funk combo – a bit smoother than their first, but that's the great thing about it! The record has the band getting even tighter than before – coming up with an amazing jazz-inflected funk groove that still leaves us breathless after all these years – and which is the perfect fusion of jazz and soul that was going down with the best groups in the mid 70s. The best example of this sound can be heard on the massive cut "Rock Creek Park" – which begins with a wonderful bass on the intro, a killer moogy keyboard bit, and a super-catchy chorus that goes "doin' it in the park," which you should recognize in about 30 seconds! The rest of the album is great too – and titles include the classic sample track "Love So Fine" – plus "Happy Music", "Hash and Eggs", "Thankful Bout Yourself", and "All I Ask". ✨✧ Ed Bogas/Sonny Stitt/Merl SaundersBlack Girl – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1972. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer little soundtrack – and one that's quite different than the usual blacksploitation set, but still pretty funky overall! The film Black Girl was a surprisingly sensitive movie directed by Ossie Davis in the early 70s – not as much about action as it was about the everyday life, and the hopes and dreams of the lead characters – all of which made for some really well-rounded music, of the sort you'd find on some of the other great Fantasy Records soundtracks of the time, especially the classic Cornbread Earl & Me score. Ed Bogas and Ray Shanklin put together the whole thing, and the album's a mix of hip instrumental tracks with some other vocal ones – a really nice range that draws from singers like Betty Everett, Rodger Collins, and JJ Malone – and jazz players like Sonny Stitt and John Hunt (plus organ from Merl Saunders on one cut.) Titles include "BJ's Step", "Black Girl", "Sister", "Earl (Still A Pearl)", "Mothers Day Song", "Power", "Get Me To The Bridge", "Chock-lite Puddin", and "Black Girl Cue". CD

Classic early live material from the Dave Brubeck Quartet – already humming along nicely with some great alto sax from Paul Desmond! The group's in fine form here – a bit more relaxed and open than on their Columbia recordings – with plenty of creative piano lines from Dave, showing just a slight dose of modernism, and lots more of that cool, icy alto sax work that made Desmond a standout right from the start. Rhythm is by Ron Crotty on bass and Joe Dodge on drums – and titles include "Laura", "Lullaby In Rhythm", "For All We Know", "All The Things You Are", and "I'll Never Smile Again". One of Duke's last albums – and a great one! The session is right up there with some of Ellington's best late "suites" – an extended work that features writing around exotic themes, played by stalwarts like Paul Gonsalves, Harold Ashby, Rufus Jones, Cootie Williams, and Harry Carney – all coming together with more energy and imagination than you'd expect after all these years! The writing is fantastic, and the moods change strongly with each tune – running through numbers like "Afrique", "Chinoiserie", "Didjeridoo", "Gong", "Tang", and "Hard Way" – all of which sound as great as their titles might imply! ✨✧ Pete & Sheila EscovedoSolo Two ... LP
Fantasy, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Funky Latin grooves from Sheila Escovedo – recorded in the decade before she hooked up with Prince and dropped the "scovedo" from her last name – when she was part of a hip Bay Area scene that also included her brother Pete! The album's got a great blend of funky fusion and Latin styles – served up with a sound that's right up there with the best on Fantasy Records from the time – a really unique fusion of modes that shows just how much trading of styles was going on in that scene during the 70s. Billy Cobham produced, with a definite ear for the percussion in the group – and the rest of the group features Mark Soskin on keyboards, Ray Obiedo on guitar, and some added horns to flesh out the sound nicely. Pete plays timbales, Sheila's on congas, and titles include "Bittersweet", "Clean Air", "Solo Tu", and "Fantasy Junction" – plus a nice version of Milton Nascimento's "Vera Cruz".
