Lester Bowie's Brass FantasyFire This Time ... LP
In & Out (Germany), 1992. Very Good 2LP ... $19.99
One of the hipper Lester Bowie sides from the 90s, but still cut very much in the horn-heavy groove of his Brass Fantasy years! The set's a live one, recorded in Switzerland in 1992 – and the group features Bowie at the head of an all-brass lineup of trumpets, French horn, tuba, and trombones – plus drums by Vinnie Johnson and percussion by Famoudou Don Moye. As with lots of the Bowie work of the time, there's a number of playful themes running through the set – as the Brass Fantasy sound is applied to a variety of stylistic settings. Titles include "Night Time", "For Louis", "Strange Fruit", "Remember The Time", "Black Or White", "Night Life", "Siesta For The Fiesta", and "The Great Pretender". LP, Vinyl record album

FantasySex & Material Possessions ... LP
Pavillion/CBS, 1982. Very Good+ ... $6.99
The second set from this early 80s disco trio – a Tony Valor side project, served up with all the soaringly soulful lines we love in his work from the 70s! Fantasy features two male singers and one female – trading back vocals nicely over catchy rhythms that sparkle with plenty of soul – and a surprising amount of warm instrumentation, much more so for clubby projects like this from the time. A few cuts get a bit mellower – almost going for a crossover soul feel, but in a nice way – and titles include "Believe Me", "Hold On Tight", "So Easy To Say", "Too Hot For Love", and "If It Don't Fit Don't Force It". A fantastic set of improvised material from the Japanese scene of the mid 90s – a performance that features visiting trumpeter Choi Sun Bae working with Junji Hirose on tenor and soprano, Motoharu Yoshizawa on electric five string bass, and Kim Dae Hwan on percussion! These three players may not be as well known to American audiences, but they sound wonderful next to Bae's incredible sounds on the trumpet – notes that have a range of shaping and inflection that matches the energy of Wadada Leo Smith at his best, but which also have a very individual character too. Hirose matches Choi for moodiness, but also keeps a bit more down to earth – creating a nice balance – and titles include "Korea Fantasy", "Remember Bird", "Blue Sky", "The Stream Of Time", and "Airang Fantasy". Patrick CowleyMechanical Fantasy Box ... LP
Dark Entries, 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99
Very early music from the great Patrick Cowley – all unreleased tracks, most of which are from a time before his huge rise to fame on the dancefloor scene! This work all represents early experiments with synthesizers – and while some of the tracks have an upbeat groove that foreshadows Cowley's club tracks in the 12" single years, there's also a wilder, weirder batch of music too – very moody moments that feel either like experimental sound library electronics, or even like some of the hipper German electronic work of the time! As with some of the posthumous releases of material by Arthur Russell, the collection really gets at the overlooked genius that Cowley brought to our world – another talent taken from us all too soon. Titles include "Moving Bodies 1", "Out Of Body", "Right Here Right Now", "Lumberjacks In Heat", "Broken Dishes", "Breakdown", "Before Original Sin", and "Sea Of China". LP, Vinyl record album

A re-edited dance track, which says "Inspired by Bits & Pieces III" on the a-side and "Inspired by Bits & Pieces IV" on the flip. More in the Stars On 45 medley vein which was popular at the time than a seminal cut and paste track, both sides lay quotes from a bunch of different songs over a disco beat, including bits of "Boogie Nights", A Hard Days Night", "Lady Bump", "Jimmy Mack", "Let's Do It", "Mississippi Queen", "Let's Spend The Night Together", "Dance fantasy" and more. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Verve, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
The great Lalo Schifrin plays piano and leads a crack group of studio players through some larger orchestral material with a nice jazzy feel! The overall approach is similar to Lalo's classic 60s soundtrack work – with nice solos arching out over sweeping strings and orchestral passages, and all tracks written with a good deal of punch, plus lots of little Latiny influences. Easily one of his most perfectly conceived albums of the 60s – and pretty darn tough to find. Tracks are long and titles include "El Salon Mexico", "New Fantasy", "Sabre Dance", and "Prelude #2". Roundtable (Australia), 1972. New Copy ... $29.99 31.98
A beautiful underwater fantasy of sound library grooves – a set that's almost the Italian equivalent to the Inner Space soundtrack from Australia by Sven Libaek! Like that set, this one uses waves of instrumental energy to create an almost watery vibe – strings mixed with keyboards, often underlain by electric bass – all at a level that's occasionally funky, always dreamy, and plenty darn cool throughout! The style continues some of the Italian soundtrack modes of a few years before, but with more fluttering elements that emphasize the "sea" in the title – on tracks that include "Underwater Fantasy", "Tempest Force 8", "High Tide", "Surging Surf", "Calm Sea", and "In The Ocean Depths". ✨✧ Roy AyersLove Fantasy ... LP
Polydor, 1980. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Roy Ayers albums of all time – and an overlooked gem from Roy's late 70s years at Polydor! This set's a bit more laidback and less clubby than some other Ayers work of the period – which means it's got this wonderful jazzy groove throughout – a sweet mix of midtempo modern soul and the vibes-based style that Roy kept on perfecting at the time. Tracks are longer than usual, and they really open up in a way that fits the title – slinky and seductive, but never soppy or commercial at all – that really special blend of warmth and wisdom that's always made Roy Ayers so great. Titles include the sublime title track "Love Fantasy", which begins with Roy chatting up some girl in the intro, then sliding into a nice smooth jazz funk tip on the chorus – plus the great cut "Sigh", a sweet little bubbling number with a wonderfully breathy quality! Other titles include "Believe In Yourself", "Betcha Gonna", "Baby Bubba", and "Rock Your Roll". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Patrick CowleyMechanical Fantasy Box – The Homoerotic Journal Of Patrick Cowley (softcover) ... Book
Dark Entries, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A book that's very much what it's promised – the homoerotic journal of dance music and soundtrack composer Patrick Cowley – a key figure on the San Francisco scene before he left this planet in the early 80s! The book is pure sex, and nothing but – save, perhaps, for some essays that frame the work at the start, and about two dozen illustrations by artist Gwenael Rattke – although those are pretty sexy too. Yet the work is a wonderful look into a side of the San Francisco scene in the years before AIDS – penned with the sense of freedom and spontaneity that paint a very different picture of the city than you'll find in mainstream culture. The book offers up chronological accounts of Cowley's sexual encounters – but they're also penned with a sense of poetry in most entries, which prevents them from being pure pornography – more thoughtful erotica, with an increasing level of quality as the years go on – similar to the evolution in Cowley's music. In addition to the black and white images by Rattke, the book also features cards and posters from some of the older bathhouses and gay clubs in San Francisco – making for some nice historical framing of the work. ✨✧ DeodatoKnights Of Fantasy ... LP
Warner, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Smooth jazzy work from Deodato – a record that takes off from his electric keyboard work of the early 70s, and shows his growing interest in modern soul and R&B a the time! Deodato's still a few years way from some of his famous soul production work, but he's already got a great ear for a groove – and works in a style that's tight, but never too slick – the best Joe Sample or Crusaders territory, but even more groove oriented too. You can definitely hear Deodato's growing taste for modern soul here – especially on the seminal club jammer "Whistle Bump", which is a tight keyboard-driven groove, with some sweeping strings underneath wah wah guitar. The cut's the real standout on the album – although there's a few other nice moments, like "Space Dust" and "Lovely Lady", which has a great mellow Bob James-ish sound. LP, Vinyl record album

Two beautiful tracks from this early 70s Japanese soundtrack – back to back on a single 45! "Searching For Fantasy" is a trippy electric piano number from Toru Takemitsu – done with this snakey guitar line that almost feels like a sitar at times – evocatively dipping, turning, and weaving its way through the piano – which itself is watery and dream-like! ✨✧ VariousFor Discos Only – Indie Dance Music From Fantasy & Vanguard Records – 1976 to 1981 (3CD set) ... CD
Fantasy/Craft, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Rare singles from the glory days of the American club music scene – most of which were only issued as promo release – hence the "for discos only" in the title! The package looks at the wealth of material issued by the Fantasy and Vanguard family of labels in the late 70s – imprints that have never fully gotten their due, in comparison to companies like Salsoul or Philadelphia International – even though they made an equally huge contribution to the world of funky grooves! In fact, given that Fantasy owned Prestige and other jazz labels at the time, they also had a longer heritage in soulful music – which often made some of their singles these real mini-masterpieces in sound. Vanguard was equally unusual, but in a different way – as disco and club were relatively new to their catalog – which almost seemed to give them a freedom to be a bit more experimental than some of the bigger companies working the dancefloors. The result is a great collection of really creative, really upbeat material – almost all of which is nice and extended, and presented here on the rare 12" single versions. Titles include "Til You Surrender (special rmx)" by Rainbow Brown, "Rock Creek Park (rmx)" by The Blackbyrds, "No One Can Do It Like You (12" special Shep Pettibone rmx)", "Chill Out (12" version)" by Free Expression, "I Don't Know What's On Your Mind (special 12" mix)" by Spiders Webb, "Over & Over (special 12" disco)" by Sylvester, "Turn The Music Up (12" disco)" by Players Association, "Beat Of The Night (special 12" disco)" by Fever, "Party Vibes (special 12" disco)" by Ike Turner & Home Grown Funk, "You've Got Me Dancing In My Sleep (special remaster)" by Frisky, "Boogie City (special 12" disco mix)" by Phil Hurtt, "Space Bass (special 12" disco)" by Slick, "Mondo Man (12" version)" by Roni Griffith, "It's Music (special 12" disco)" by Damon Harris, "Always There (special 12" disco)" by Side Effect, "For Your Love (special 12" disco)" by Idris Muhammad, "Straight To The Bank (special 12" disco)" by Bill Summers, "Boogie With Me (12" disco)" by Poussez, "Don't Know What To Say" by The Blackbyrds, "I'm The One" by Rainbow Brown, "I Got The Feeling (Patrick Cowley megamix)" by Two Tons O Fun, "Dance (special 12" disco)" by Paradise Express, and "Savage Lover (12" disco long vocal)" by The Ring. Cannonball AdderleyBig Man ... LP
Fantasy, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
One of the last albums ever issued by the great Cannonball Adderley – and one of the most ambitious, too! The set's a concept album – done in close collaboration with David Axelrod, in a similar spirit to some of Cannon's projects on the zodiac or the bible – but this time turned towards the legend of John Henry! The set's got some fuller orchestrations than some of the others – a bit of strings and a chorus, which sometimes gives the record the feel of a blacksploitation album, sometimes more of a Melvin Van Peebles project. Lead vocals are by Joe Williams, Randy Crawford, and Robert Guillaume – and the core combo features work from Cannonball on alto sax, Dawili Gonga on keyboards, Airto on percussion, and George Bohannon on trombone – on titles that include "Hundred an One Year", "Poundin", "The Steamdrill", "New Star Risin", "On His Bones", "Anybody Need A Big Man", "The Broomstick Song", and "Ten Mile Of Mountain". One of Cannonball Adderley's late funky sessions for Fantasy – and a record that still features some mighty heavy production from David Axelrod! The album's got that core groove that Axe and Cannon first crafted together at Capitol in the 60s – but the sound here has some definite 70s touches too – a bit more emphasis on electric piano, played here by Hal Galper – and rhythms that are even funkier than before! Other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Walter Booker on bass, Roy McCurdy on drums, and King Errison on percussion – and titles include the excellent "Snakin' the Grass", which is just ripe for samplin', plus some other good grooves like "Second Son", "Saudade", "Five Of A Kind", and "Inside Straight". Late stuff by Cannonball, with a dope spacey electric sound, no doubt due to some very nice keyboards on the session by George Duke. Brother Nat gives a helping hand on both cornet and production duties, and the group also features Airto, Alphonso Johnson, Jack DeJohnette, and Alvin batiste with guest spots by Flora Purim and Ron Carter. Fantasy, 1975. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! The album's actually Cannonball's last full studio set, but it's also one of his greatest too – a very hip little record that features arrangements that are slightly bigger than before – almost a CTI sort of mode, with a similar CTI sense of space, sound, and timing! There's some great keyboards on the set – courtesy of George Duke and Mike Wolff – and other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Airto on percussion, Sam Jones and Walter Booker on bass, and Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy on drums. The keyboards lead off most numbers, but they're followed strongly by Cannon and Nat – both of whom open up wonderfully in the magical setting of the record! Titles include great new takes on "Sack O Woe", "Work Song", "Jive Samba", "74 Miles Away", "Walk Tall/Mercy Mercy Mercy", "Country Preacher", "Domination", and "This Here" – plus "Hi Fly" and "Hamba Nami". Fantasy, Early 70s. Used ... $2.99
It's great to see that David Axelrod's finally getting his due – and this reissue of material from Fantasy is one of the first reissues of his work in the US! Most cuts here are much more jazz-based than Axelrod's higher-concept material under his own name for Capitol in the late 60s – and the music represents Axe's key move to Fantasy after bigger label fame – a move that he made with Cannonball Adderley, who also figures in on some of these tracks. The CD features 8 tracks from Axelrod's Full Axe album – a tasty bit of funky fusion that's one of his best jazz-oriented releases – plus a sampling of tracks from other albums he produced and/or arranged for Fantasy. Titles from Full Axe include "My Family", "Mucho Chupar", "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing", and "Everything Counts" – and other tracks include "Cantaro" and "Solitario" by Gene Ammons, "Bach" and "Sierra Morena" by Hampton Hawes, "Quit It" by Nat Adderley, "Goodbye So Long" by Funk Inc, and "Stayin Place" from the Big Man 2LP set. Tony Bennett/Bill EvansComplete Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Recordings (Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album/Together Again – plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Fantasy, 1975/1976. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
The complete recording of Tony Bennett and Bill Evans as a duo – the Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album from '75 and the '76 follow up Together Again – back to back, plus a bonus CD of alternate takes! If you've ever doubted the real jazz sensibility of Tony Bennett, the Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album is the one to change your mind – because Tony's working here in a marvelously unadorned setting – with only the piano of Bill Evans to back him up! The record's a rare gem from years after Bennett was cracking the pop charts, but was willing to pull back to the jazz of his roots – and the session's equally rare for Evans, who rarely worked with vocalists at this point in his career. The simplicity of the album is its strength – and together, the pair really sound tremendous – slightly faltering at times, but in a way that exposes a sense of humanity you might not find in other records, especially those by Bennett. Titles include "When In Rome", "Some Other Time", "The Touch Of Your Lips", "My Foolish Heart", "Waltz For Debby", and "Young & Foolish". Together Again is another gem, following the form of the first duos record exceptionally well, perhaps with Evan's piano a bit more prominent in the sound, and another fine batch of tunes, including "The Bad And The Beautiful", "Lucky To Be Me", "A Child Is Born", "Lonely Girl", "You Must Believe In Spring" and more. The bonus CD features alternate takes of material from the 2 albums, with versions of "You And Foolish", "The Touch Of Your Lips", "Some Other Time", "When In Rome", "Waltz For Debbie" and multiple versions of "The Bad And The Beautiful", "A Child Is Born", and more. BlackbyrdsBlackbyrds ... LP
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
A funky jazz treasure – and the band's landmark first album! The Blackbyrds were a legendary 70s combo that were discovered by Donald Byrd while he was teaching at Howard University – and they had a tight style that mixed raw funk influences with smoother jazz playing, creating a sound that was different from many of their contemporaries, and which pushed funk and soul into a whole new level. Byrd's work with the band was as groundbreaking as Larry Mizell's work on his own Blue Note albums – and coincidentally, Larry Mizzell's Sky High Productions handles the studio chores for the set – but in a way that's much more sharply funky than his albums with Byrd! Titles include the tight choppy funk tracks "Do It, Fluid" and "Funky Junkie", plus other nice groovers like "Summer Love", "Gut Level", and "The Runaway". LP, Vinyl record album

2 incredible albums from The Blackbyrds – back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Blackbyrds record – a funky jazz treasure, and the band's landmark first album! Flying Start has a beautifully put-together feel – tight enough to crossover somewhat big with a larger audience than the group's previous effort – but still filled with the kind of righteous energy that first got them going, a sublime mix of jazzy rhythms and soulful elements, all held together tightly by production from Donald Byrd. Tracks include the big hit "Walking In Rhythm", which was an oft-spun 45 back in the day – plus some great funk moments, like the tasty "Spaced Out", the choppy "The Baby", and the captivating "Blackbyrds Theme". The funky freaky soundtrack to Ralph Bakshi's animated feature Fritz The Cat – a really messed-up little film based around the original character created by Robert Crumb! Like the movie, the album's got a very skittish kind of feel – leaping from one genre to the next with each different track – but mostly featuring some older numbers from the Fantasy catalog, plus some key newer tracks for the set that are nice and funky! Original tunes include the bad-rapping "Fritz The Cat", by Ed Bogas and The Watson Sisters – plus the instrumentals "Duke's Theme" and "Bertha's Theme" by Ray Shanklin, and "The Riot" and "Winston" by Ed Bogas. Incredible jazz material from one of the least-known and least-appreciated groups working on the east coast during the 50s. Dennis and Adolphe Sandole had an incredible talent for writing – and in the short time they recorded together, they served up some amazing tracks with a wonderful group sound that recalls some of the Mingus Jazz Workshop recordings with John La Porta. This is the rare full-length version of their album for Fantasy, and it includes the tracks "Drums", "Wings Over Persia", "Grenadine", "Boys From Istanbul", "Arabu", "The Tamaret", and "Magic Carpet". Smith's got a cool modern sound that's not unlike Jimmy Giuffre – icy but expressive too, and both a great fit for the band because and apart from their usual work with Paul Desmond! Eugene Wright's still on bass, and Joe Morello plays some wonderfully time-kept drums – on titles that include "The Piper", "Frisco Fog", "Lydian Line", "Ballade", "One For The Kids", "Catch Me If You Can", and "Peace Brother". Creedence Clearwater Revival may not have actually been born on the bayou – they were long-timers in the San Francisco scene of the 60s – but they do a hell of a job of reinventing swamp rock on this second stunning album! The quartet are a masterpiece of spare, unbridled power – the tremendous guitar and vocals of John Fogerty, strong rhythm guitar support of brother Tom, driving drums of Doug Clifford, and rolling bass of Stu Cook – all forged into a sound that's maybe more perfectly a summation of the blend of blues, funk, rock, and soul than some of the groups of the south were turning out at the time. Fantasy, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $9.99
The stunning debut of CCR – a record that still burns with an undeniable fire after all these years! Sure, all the elements here have been copped by many – the fuzzy guitar, lean bluesy groove, and raw soul-inspired vocals of John Fogerty – but the way the group puts them together is tremendous – and there's a lean, raw vibe to the whole record that instantly communicates the urgency the group's music had back in the second half of the 60s! Even the group's take on other artists' songs never sound dated at all – and taken together, the mix of material on the record is even greater than the sum of its parts – with a power that punches more than any of these songs on their own. The whole thing's also a great testament to Fogerty's guitar skills too – with some raw solos that blow away most of the blues rock pretenders of the period – on titles that include "Get Down Woman", "The Working Man", "Gloomy", "Walking On The Water", "Ninety Nine & A Half", "Porterville", and "Susie Q". Fantasy/Decision, 1983. Used ... $4.99
A mindblowing debut from Cybotron – one of the most unusual groups to ever hail from Detroit – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the musical legacy of the city! Cybotron have a sound that's starkly electronic, and a huge influence on later electro, hip hop, techno, and house – served up here as a spare, fuzzy approach to funk – but with lots of the colder touches you'd find from post-punk imports at the time! The blend is quite unique, and even more unusual given the fact that the trio were working in virtual obscurity on the Detroit scene – as an early project from the legendary Juan Atkins, with guitarist Jon-5, and the mysterious electronician 3070! There's more funk here than most of the group's electro contemporaries – but the sound is still nicely cold in all the right parts too – and titles include the seminal "Clear", which was years ahead of its time – plus "Cosmic Cars", "Cosmic Raindance", "Industrial Lies", "The Line", and "Alleys Of Your Mind". CD reissue also features some nice bonus cuts – including "Clear (Jose Animal Diaz rmx)", "Cosmic Cars (Detroit style mix)", "Techno City (voc)", "Techno City (inst)", "R-9 (inst)", and "Eden (voc)". A great live date from Bill Evans – one of his essential sides of the 70s, even if you've already got a bunch of other Evans live material! We know what you're thinking: "Do I have this one? Seems to be a lot of tunes here that I've got on other Evans recordings." But take it from us, this set's a real winner – beautifully recorded despite a larger venue performance in Tokyo – and captured with all the grace, poise, and gentle-flowing genius of Evans in his best better-known live dates – a real antidote to some of the other 70s live albums that might have been better left unissued. Everyone's at the top of their game here – Eddie Gomez on bass with those round warm tones, Marty Morrell on drums with his simple spare rhythms, and Evans himself with a sound that's bold then quiet then bold then soft – beautiful throughout, and really setting fire. Fantasy, Late 50s. Used ... $1.99
Pretty amazing work from one of the greatest under-rated talents of 50s modern jazz! John LaPorta was a brilliant multi-instrumentalist who's probably best known for his work with Mingus in the mid 50s Jazz Workshop years, and for his earlier sides with Woody Herman – but it's on records under his own name that LaPorta really begins to shine. This great set features 14 tracks that were recorded in the 50s, but never issued before – and 9 more that were from the album Conceptions, issued briefly in the 50s by Fantasy Records. The first 14 tracks form a long suite of jazz-based compositions, handled with a modernist chamber-type approach – and based around some really great solo work on trumpet, baritone, tenor, and bass. The feel is almost like a 50s jazz soundtrack – with lots of moody moments paired with others that break out in a stronger swinging groove. The remaining tracks are equally nice – in a similar style, and showing LaPorta as a composer who could have handled just about any ambitious jazz project of the time. Titles include "Forward Motion", "Jazz Canon", "Images", "Lucidity", "Little Fantasy", "Ferme LaPorta", "En Rapport", and "Triplets You Say". CD

This sweet double-length package is a very well-chosen set of their gems for Fantasy records, and a few later tracks for RCA – a really expansive look at all that's great about the group – with classics mixed with overlooked album cuts and some great funky numbers you might have missed otherwise. Nearly everything Pleasure ever cut is fantastic, but this set is even more fantastic than the rest – and features 25 titles that include "Bouncy Lady", "Dust Yourself Off", "Joyous", "Ghettos Of The Mind", "Only You", "Sassafras Girl", "Glide", "Farewell Goodbye", "Special Things", "Thoughts Of Old Flames", "Give It Up", "Sending My Love", "Stone Love", "Glide (special disco rmx)", "Space Is The Place", "Living Without You", "Let's Dance", and a previously unreleased "Foxy Lady (disco version)". Private EyePrivate Eye ... CD
Fantasy/Boogie Times (France), 1983. Used ... $6.99
An overlooked gem from the early 80s groove scene – the only album we've ever seen from Private Eye, a tightly funky trio that features drummer Will Kennedy of the Yellowjackets! The sound here is definitely funky soul, but with an undercurrent of jazz – given the strength of the players' instrumentation – and there's a leaner feel to the record than most other 80s funk efforts of this nature. There's plenty of keyboards in the mix – played by Larry Batiste and Claytoven Richardson – who also handle most of the singing – and titles include "Hot Girl", "I'll Keep On Loving You", "No One Can Love You Like Me", and "Totally Convinced". ✨✧ Quintet (Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, & OthersJazz At Massey Hall (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1953. Used ... $3.99
A legendary concert – recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto, with a previously-unmatched quintet of superstar bop players – Charlie Parker on alto, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, and Max Roach on drums – all coming together in a performance that's a bit rough at times, but which more than makes up for that roughness in its own sense of history! This single LP features the quintet performances from the date (others featured the trio of Powell, Mingus, and Roach) – on titles that include "Perdido", "Salt Peanuts", "All The Things You Are", "Wee", and "Hot House". Fantasy, 1977. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A lost bit of jazzy soul from the late 70s – produced by Wayne Henderson with the same great style as his other Fantasy Records sets at the time! There's some uptempo numbers, but our favorite cuts are the mellower ones – and the great Bobby Lyle plays some nice keyboard lines on the set as well. Tracks include "Love Is Such a Lovely Sound", "For You to Lose Your Love", and "For You". LP, Vinyl record album

LJ ReynoldsTell Me You Will ... CD
Fantasy/Expansion (UK), 1987. New Copy ... $8.99
The strong late 80s release from soul veteran LJ Reynolds for Fantasy! At this point, the ex-member of The Dramatics had been proving for years that he's a pretty great modern soul singer in his own right – having delivered a string of solid solo efforts throughout the 80s – and Tell Me You Will is a real gem! It's got a good modern soul feel to it, and a small combo backs LJ up on most of the tracks. It's got a tight synth soul backdrop and timelessly soulful vocals from LJ. Titles include "I Will Always Love You", "Tell Me You Will", "Olivia", "Got To Give My Love", "He Can't Love You", and "Magic Love". CD

Max RoachConversations (Speak, Brother, Speak/Deeds, Not Words) ... LP
Fantasy, 1958/1962. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
Nice Prestige 2-fer from the 70s that brings together 2 great albums. Speak, Brother, Speak is solid righteous jazz from the Max Roach of the 60s – recorded at a time when the player was really breaking away from his straighter hardbop roots, and delving deeper into more freely soulful jazz expression! It features 2 long tracks – each a side apiece – played by Max with a quartet that includes Clifford Jordan on tenor, Eddie Khan on bass, and Mal Waldron on piano. Jordan really takes off on the album – demonstrating a great ability for long blowing and creative exploration that was only hinted at on his other studio sessions at the time, and which really points the way towards some of his freer-thinking records of the 70s. Waldron is great too – bringing in some nicely darker colors that really help to round out the sound. Titles include "Speak Brother Speak" and "A Variation". Deeds, Not Words is another classic Max Roach session, from a bit earlier in 1958, with Booker Little, George Coleman, Art Davis, and Ray Draper. The album's got a couple of great originals by Bill Lee – "Jodie's Cha Cha" and "Deeds, Not Words" – plus Draper's classic "Filide", which is one of those tracks that you know you've heard, but can never recognize. Also included is "Conversation", a very cool solo by Roach on the drums! LP, Vinyl record album

Mongo SantamariaOur Man In Havana ... LP
Fantasy, 1960. Very Good ... $29.99
One of Mongo's rarest sides for Fantasy! Recorded in Cuba during Mongo's brief return to his homeland in 1960, with a much rootsier feel than any of his other albums from the time. Willie Bobo joined Mongo in Havana for the sessions, and most of the other instrumentation is percussion, with some vocals, and a bit of trumpet, flute, and piano. Includes "Manila", "He Guapacha", "Miss Patti Cha Cha", "Vamos A Gozar", "Barandanga", "Cha Cha Rock", "Linda Guajira", and "Vengan Pollos". LP, Vinyl record album
(Teal label pressing in a black & white cover.)
