Fantasy 15Fame Or Life/The Menace ... 7-inch
Eraserhood Sound, 2020. New Copy ... $6.99
Two sweet electro grooves from a young Philly group! "Fame Or Life" has some great 80s keyboards in the mix – creating a nice theme-like vibe over the slinky midtempo groove, occasionally with nice washes of sound – all like you're watching a montage on the opening credits of some cop show from 1986! "The Menace" is harder and funkier – nice drums at the core, and keyboards that sound a bit spookier! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Lalo SchifrinNew Fantasy ... LP
Verve, 1964. Very Good Gatefold ... $11.99
The great Lalo Schifrin plays piano and leads a crack group of studio players through some larger orchestral material with a nice jazzy feel! The overall approach is similar to Lalo's classic 60s soundtrack work – with nice solos arching out over sweeping strings and orchestral passages, and all tracks written with a good deal of punch, plus lots of little Latiny influences. Easily one of his most perfectly conceived albums of the 60s – and pretty darn tough to find. Tracks are long and titles include "El Salon Mexico", "New Fantasy", "Sabre Dance", and "Prelude #2". Armando SciasciaSea Fantasy ... LP
Roundtable (Australia), 1972. New Copy ... $29.99 31.98
A beautiful underwater fantasy of sound library grooves – a set that's almost the Italian equivalent to the Inner Space soundtrack from Australia by Sven Libaek! Like that set, this one uses waves of instrumental energy to create an almost watery vibe – strings mixed with keyboards, often underlain by electric bass – all at a level that's occasionally funky, always dreamy, and plenty darn cool throughout! The style continues some of the Italian soundtrack modes of a few years before, but with more fluttering elements that emphasize the "sea" in the title – on tracks that include "Underwater Fantasy", "Tempest Force 8", "High Tide", "Surging Surf", "Calm Sea", and "In The Ocean Depths". 1984, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic book on a unique slice of soundtrack culture – the rise of the sci-fi soundtrack in the 60s and 70s, which also matched a real rise in new musical styles too! The book is filled with color images of vintage records, but is also way more than just an artwork book – as the authors have interviews with some key composers – including Stu Phillips and Laurence Rosenthal – and really provide a history of the genre through the 80s, which might have been its biggest decade on vinyl! These guys gave us a great book on horror soundtracks – Blood On Black Wax – and this book may well even top that one. 270 pages, full color, hardcover. Book

✨✧ Roy AyersLove Fantasy ... CD
Polydor/PTG (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Roy Ayers albums of all time – and an overlooked gem from Roy's late 70s years at Polydor! This set's a bit more laidback and less clubby than some other Ayers work of the period – which means it's got this wonderful jazzy groove throughout – a sweet mix of midtempo modern soul and the vibes-based style that Roy kept on perfecting at the time. Tracks are longer than usual, and they really open up in a way that fits the title – slinky and seductive, but never soppy or commercial at all – that really special blend of warmth and wisdom that's always made Roy Ayers so great. Titles include the sublime title track "Love Fantasy", which begins with Roy chatting up some girl in the intro, then sliding into a nice smooth jazz funk tip on the chorus – plus the great cut "Sigh", a sweet little bubbling number with a wonderfully breathy quality! Other titles include "Believe In Yourself", "Betcha Gonna", "Baby Bubba", and "Rock Your Roll". CD

✨✧ Heaven & EarthFantasy ... CD
Mercury/PTG (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A crowning moment from the Chicago scene of the late 70s – the second Mercury album from Heaven & Earth, and a stunner all the way through! The set's an undisputed groover right from the start – thanks to the massive arrangements from the great Floyd Morris – an artist who did some excellent work in the Chicago indie soul scene in the 60s, including some classic funky 45s – and whose work here definitely gives Heaven & Earth a sharper edge than most other acts of their type at the time! You can definitely hear Floyd's touch in the funky bottom of the two-part classic "I Feel A Groove Under My Feet", and in the riffing guitar of "Poetry In A Box" – and the group also show their warmer, mellower side nicely on cuts like "Let's Get It Together", "I'm In Love With Your Lady", "I Only Have Eyes For You", and "Whole Lot Of Love" – nice warm numbers with great harmonies and gentle stepping grooves! Along with Perfect Angel and Adventures In Paradise, this is one of the key albums of Minnie's career – recorded when she was at the height of her power, forging a whole new soul sound that mixed her incredible voice with jazzy modern arrangements that were a few years ahead of most of the other singers at her level. The album's subtitled "A Romantic Fantasy Set To Music", and it features a swirling mix of ballads and uptempo tunes – all with a sexy sound, and some of the most seductive vocals that Minnie ever recorded. Includes the club groover "Young Willing & Able", plus "Can You Feel What I'm Saying?", "Gettin' Ready for Your Love", "Could It Be I'm In Love", and the great "Stick Together", written with Stevie Wonder. Mercury, 1977. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Not as strong as Coke's earlier work on Mercury – but not a bad album overall, thanks to some tight production work by Pat Gleeson, who's also most likely playing the cool keyboards on the record. Most of the tunes are aimed at the dancefloor – not really disco numbers, but the sort of fast funk jazz-based tunes that showed up in the later years of CTI and Kudu, especially on albums arranged by David Matthews. There's a female vocalist on most of the tracks, although she's not named in the notes – and titles include "Soul Support", "Won't You Gimme The Funk", "Who Do You Want To Love", "Trash Man", "Something Special", and "Hot Soul Single". BlackbyrdsFlying Start ... LP
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
Not the band's first album – as you might think from the "start" in the title – but a classic batch of jazzy, funky, and soulful grooves from The Blackbyrds – one of those combos that few groups could match back in the 70s! The set's got a beautifully put-together feel – tight enough to crossover somewhat big with a larger audience than the group's previous effort – but still filled with the kind of righteous energy that first got them going, a sublime mix of jazzy rhythms and soulful elements, all held together tightly by production from Donald Byrd. Tracks include the big hit "Walking In Rhythm", which was an oft-spun 45 back in the day – plus some great funk moments, like the tasty "Spaced Out", the choppy "The Baby", and the captivating "Blackbyrds Theme". Other cuts include "Future Children Future Hopes", "I Need You", and "April Showers". LP, Vinyl record album

BlackbyrdsNight Grooves ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1978. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A great album of funky dancefloor tunes! Originally issued in 1978, and clearly for the New York dancefloor crowd – the record takes the earlier work of funk group The Blackbyrds, and remixes the tracks slightly to pump up the groove a bit for the dancers. While the approach might not sound good on paper, it actually works wonderfully on the record – as the tunes retain all of the jazz funk feel of the originals, without any of the cheap tricks you might expect! The album's as essential as any of the group's earlier albums – and it's filled with great versions of classics like "Supernatural Feeling", "Gut Level", "Walking In Rhythm", "Do It Fluid", "Rock Creek Park", and "Happy Music". Fantasy/OJC, 1953. Used ... $6.99
A classic album from Dave – recorded at Oberlin College, the mid-Ohio haven of bohemiana, and a growing hotbed of jazz activity centered around students in the college's conservatory of music. Dave and crew made the trip at the request of the kids – breaking from their mostly San Francisco-based recording career to cut what would end up becoming a very successful album in Dave's catalog, and begin a whole "at" or "goes to" series in his career. The group's the early quartet with Paul Desmond, Lloyd Davis, and Ron Crotty – and tunes include long and jamming versions of "The Way You Look Tonight", "How High The Moon", and "Stardust". CD

✨✧ CybotronEnter Cybotron (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Fantasy/Decision, 1983. Used ... $6.99
A mindblowing debut from Cybotron – one of the most unusual groups to ever hail from Detroit – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the musical legacy of the city! Cybotron have a sound that's starkly electronic, and a huge influence on later electro, hip hop, techno, and house – served up here as a spare, fuzzy approach to funk – but with lots of the colder touches you'd find from post-punk imports at the time! The blend is quite unique, and even more unusual given the fact that the trio were working in virtual obscurity on the Detroit scene – as an early project from the legendary Juan Atkins, with guitarist Jon-5, and the mysterious electronician 3070! There's more funk here than most of the group's electro contemporaries – but the sound is still nicely cold in all the right parts too – and titles include the seminal "Clear", which was years ahead of its time – plus "Cosmic Cars", "Cosmic Raindance", "Industrial Lies", "The Line", and "Alleys Of Your Mind". CD reissue also features some nice bonus cuts – including "Clear (Jose Animal Diaz rmx)", "Cosmic Cars (Detroit style mix)", "Techno City (voc)", "Techno City (inst)", "R-9 (inst)", and "Eden (voc)". Bill Evans' first album as a leader – and a well-titled set that went onto transform the sound of the piano in jazz! The session isn't as lyrically free as some of Evans' later classics, but already has an undeniably fresh approach to the keys – one that's modern, yet never academic – fluid, but never flowery – pure genius of economy and understatement, while also at the same time opening bold new worlds in sound. The trio features drummer Paul Motian and bassist Teddy Kotick, and titles include the classics "Five" and "Waltz For Debby", the latter of which is performed solo by Evans – plus tracks that include "Displacement", "I Love You", "My Romance", "No Cover, No Minimum", and "Our Delight". Great stuff by Betty – and light years away from her work at Vee Jay! Betty's lyrical stylings are in sort of a Nancy Wilson sophisticated soul mode – and they're made even better by Gene's slightly-funk warmly-smooth backings. A real sleeper, and with loads of great moments! Titles include "Bedroom Eyes", "Keep It Up", "Happy Endings", "Here's The Gift", "Just A Little Piece Of You", and a great little cover of Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows". LP, Vinyl record album

That's a beautifully trippy cover here on this album fro Tom Fogerty – maybe a bit more than the music, which often has more ties to his work in CCR! Not that that's a bad thing, though – as the album marks a strong solo effort by Tom, away from his brother. LP, Vinyl record album

Vince GuaraldiPeanuts Portraits – The Classic Character Themes ... LP
Fantasy/Craft, 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
Some of the grooviest tunes from the Peanuts cartoons – key character themes penned and played by the legendary Vince Guaraldi, in a set of recordings that features both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes! A few cuts get really funky, too – the electric numbers, which remind us that back when we were wee ones, watching these cartoons, Guaraldi was already shaping our consciousness with his great way with a groove. The package is one that really gets right to the heart of Guaraldi's genius – and shakes free of some of the holiday spirit of other Peanuts jazz packages, to get into some incredibly groovy numbers that include "Peppermint Patty", "Joe Cool", "Charlie's Blues (variation)", "Blue Charlie Brown (version 2)", "Frieda (alternate)", "Little Birdie", and "Schroeder (alternate)" – plus the famous "Linus & Lucy". Also features versions of "The Masked Marvel" and "Linus & Lucy" played solo by George Winston. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Vince GuaraldiVince Guaraldi Trio ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1956. Used ... $8.99
Early genius from pianist Vince Guaraldi – recorded years before his Peanuts fame, but proof that he was an extremely original talent even at the start! The setting is a trio one – and Vince is playing with longtime partner Eddie Duran on guitar, plus Dean Reilly on bass – and the lack of drums really unlocks the fluid, lyrical side of Guaraldi's playing – his great talent for pianistic colors, and strong ability to paint little scenes in sound. Even though most of the numbers are standards by other writers, Vince really takes off with the tunes – letting only the basic melody structure the tune's beginning, then really flying free on the keys. Duran's guitar work is nice too – hard and raspy one minute, but light and gentle the next – and titles include "Never Never Land", "Chelsea Bridge", "Sweet & Lovely", "Ossobucco", "3 Coins In A Fountain", and "Fenwyck Farfel". Vince Guaraldi TrioCharlie Brown Christmas (70th anniversary edition – with 3D cover) ... LP
Fantasy/Craft, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
An amazing record – one with a depth that goes way beyond its simple roots, and which has gone on to become one of the true Christmas classics of the 20th Century! Although a Christmas soundtrack, the album's more of a tapestry of sadness, longing, and loss – the best qualities that always emerge in true Christmas classics – underscoring the blue side of the season that's always lurking around corners from the happier moments. Vince Guaraldi penned this score back when he was a rising talent on the San Francisco scene – and in a way, it was almost his musical contribution to the cartoon that made it such a lasting favorite – even over and above the appeal of the famous animated characters. Most tunes are simple piano ones, but played with a phrasing that's beautifully timeless – and the few vocal numbers feature voices from the cartoon, singing softly with the music. Titles include the classic "Linus and Lucy" – plus "My Little Drum", "Christmas Is Coming", "Christmas Time Is Here", "Skating", and "Fur Elise". LP, Vinyl record album

Woody HermanChildren Of Lima ... CD
Fantasy/Wounded Bird, 1974. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
An overlooked chapter of the 70s genius of Woody Herman – and the kind of album that shows him continuing to grow strongly, many years after his initial fame! The record takes off ambitiously from some of the funkier Herman sessions of the start of the 70s – and features the core group augmented by the Houston Symphony Orchestra on side one – offering up larger backings to color in the sophisticated sounds of the tunes "Variation On A Scene" and "Children Of Lima", both jazz suites penned by Alan Broadbent, who'd done great work with Herman's group. Side two is back to straighter big band numbers – tunes that burst out with a lot of life and energy, and which have a few of the soulful stylings of Herman's previous funk. Highlights include great covers of "25 Or 6 To 4" and "Where Is The Love", plus a version of Broadbent's driving "Far In". CD

Genius 70s work from Woody Herman – funky big band with electric touches, served up on a range of wonderful tunes! Woody's still at the helm of the group on saxes and clarinet – but as with other Fantasy and Cadet albums, the real thanks here goes to arrangers – who include Bill Stapleton, Alan Broadbent, Tony Klatka, and Richard Evans – who's making a brief post-Cadet appearance here to serve up a fierce version of his classic "First Thing I Do" – a jazzy reworking of the Joyce Williams tune, done here with a nice break, wah-wah guitar, and a real badass soundtrack style! Rhythm players include Joe Beck and Ray Barretto – and the whole album's great throughout. Titles include "Think On Me", "A Child Is Born", "Freedom Jazz Dance", "First Thing I Do", "Giant Steps", and a great take on Chick Corea's "La Fiesta", complete with electric piano! A really great step forward for Nate Fox and Nico Segal – who you might know from the Chicago collective The Social Experiment – set here to transform the world of contemporary soul on their own! The album's got this really fantastic, yet sensitive blend of modes – tunes that are often gentle on the rhythms, yet sparkle with light touches on keyboards, horns, guitar, and a bit of percussion – all used in ways that are maybe as open as the image on the front cover – a kind of more-is-less mode that really balances with the vocals! The record's got some big names as guests – including Esperanza Spaulding and Vic Mensa – but trust us, these guys on their own are already headed in a great direction. Titles include "Boca", "Overthinking", "Popstar", "Money", "Sing It Louder", "Over The Hill", "Coincidence", "Friction", "Like I Feel", and "Shotty". LP, Vinyl record album

Elliot Lawrence Big BandSwings Cohn & Kahn ... CD
Fantasy, Mid 50s. Used ... $9.99
Bold work from Elliot Lawrence – one of the groovier big band leaders on the west coast of the 50s – and one of the few who really found a way to mix older modes and some of the modern changes going on at the time! Lawrence's music almost always has a groove – his audience were often dancers at some of the bigger spots on the coast – but he also finds a way to fold in some strong solo work too, but all without some of the more academic tones that would come from a group like Stan Kenton's. Key soloists here include Al Cohn and Zoot Sims on tenor, Hal McKusick on alto, Nick Travis and Ernie Royal on trumpets, and Eddie Bert and Urbie Green on trombone – and the set features material from the albums Plays Tiny Kahn & Johnny Mandel Arrangements, Swinging At The Steel Pier, and Plays For Swinging Dancers. Titles include "Blue Room", "Who Fard That Shot", "Blues Alley", "Ponce", "Tenderly", "Walkin My Baby Back Home", "Hackin Around", "Cupcake", "Ivy Walk", "Handmade", "Nightfall", "Jazz Lullaby", and "Mood Midnight". A completely different album than some of the earlier work from funky drummer Idris Muhammad – but a set that's completely wonderful in its own sort of way! Muhammad's drums are still right on the money, and able to move with even more quick-stepping power than before – set up in these fantastic larger elements that are really given great shape from producer William Fischer – who almost acts here in a Larry Mizell sort of mode! There's a host of great jazzy players in the mix – including work from Cliff Carter on keyboards and Hiram Bullock on guitar. Some cuts have vocals, but there's still a strong instrumental focus on the record overall – and tracks include "See Saw", "The Doc", "Big Foot", "Disco Man", "You Ain't No Friend Of Mine", and "Tell Me Where Did We Go Wrong". Fantasy/OJC, 1954. Used ... $5.99
Great lean grooves from vibist Red Norvo – exactly the kind or record that shows why he was such an amazing talent on his instrument in the 50s! The album has Red working without piano or drums – just the guitar of Jimmy Raney and bass of Red Mitchell – both players who are hipper than the usual cats to handle their instruments too, especially Raney, whose sharp tone is a great match for Norvo's vibes. Red's vibes are way up front on most of the tracks, but leave plenty of space for the other players to shine, especially Raney's guitar work on "J9 Hate K9" and "Out Of Nowhere". Other tracks include "Crazy Rhythm", "Puby La Keg", "Just One Of Those Things", "Everything I've Got", and "Prelude To A Kiss". CD

Posthumous issue of an early 50s live set by Charlier Parker – one of the many that were rushed to the public in the years after his early death. The set, like many of the other live ones from the time, isn't recorded that well – but the music is still pretty wonderful. There's a real focus on Bird in the way the microphone was set up – so although you hear the rest of the band comping in the background, the album almost works like a session of solo sax work by Parker – as his alto is right out front in the mix, playing with a faltering style at times – but in a way that only seems to deepen our vision of his genius. Players include Red Rodney on trumpet and Al Haig on piano – and titles include "Ornithology", "Star Eyes", "Visa", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", and "Confirmation". CD

✨✧ Nat Pierce-Dick Collins/Charlie MarianoNat Pierce-Dick Collins Nonet/Charlie Mariano Sextet ... LP
Fantasy, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
An incredible set of tracks – featuring some of the best early work by a young Charlie Mariano! Side one of the album features a nonet led by the team of Nat Pierce and Dick Collins – larger arrangements in a Woody Herman-esque style, played by a group that includes Jerry Coker, Jack Nimetz, and Cy Touff – on titles that include "Some of These Days", "Easy Living", "Blue Lester", and "The King". But the real charmer here is side two – fantastic material by a sextet led by Charlie Mariano, recorded in San Francisco with a wonderful focus on Charlie's edgey early tone! The Mariano sides are tremendous – really incredible, with a sense of soul and depth that grabs you right away – and which even surpasses Charlie's excellent 50s work on Bethlehem. PleasureFuture Now ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A wonderful album from Pleasure – a group who were already great before, but who really seem to hit a great new level with this late 70s classic! Pleasure started out as a sweet jazz/funk combo with a great edge to their music – but by the time of this set, they'd actually gotten even tighter and better – but all without losing their depth at all! Most of the group's contemporaries just got slick and commercial – but instead, Pleasure found a way to hone their skills wonderfully – and take on some new spacey and electric touches in the process – definitely pointing towards the funky future promised in the title. The set's filled with some of the funkiest and most soulful moments of the group's career – including "Space is the Place", which has great funky drums on the intro; the mellow "Thoughts of Old Flames", a real stunner with a great moody feel; and the classic "Glide", a great dancefloor groover that still stands up well. Other tracks are all great too – and include "Universal", "Strong Love", "Nothin To It", and "Dedication To The Past". CD

Side EffectWhat You Need ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Quite possibly the greatest album ever from Side Effect – a wonderful set that mixes their soulful harmonies with some killer jazz funk from Wayne Henderson! The album may be the most perfect realization of the groove that Henderson was going for during his At Home Productions years – lots of funky fusion in the instrumentation, but all directed towards a tighter, more soul-based style – that perfect contribution that Fantasy Records made to the world in the 70s – after labels like Blue Note and Columbia first started setting things down. Whatever the chronology, though, this set's a standout no matter how you slice it – damn catchy tunes, incredible vocals, and a set of rhythms that are every bit as hip today as they were back when first recorded – really genre-defining grooves that you'll definitely recognize in the album's classics "Always There" and "Keep That Same Old Feeling" – and will go on to love in the cuts "Life Is What You Make It", "Changes", "I Know You Can", "SOS", "Time Has No Ending", "Finally Found Someone", and "Honky Tonk Scat".
