So Delicious

LP (Item 32125) Columbia, 1979 — Condition: Very Good+

An oh so tasty batch of jazzy modern soul from the Baltimore combo Pockets – one of the loose assemblage of groups to be directed at the time by Verdine White's Kalimba Productions – and with all the joyful vibes that association implies! There's some nice touches of Earth Wind & Fire on the record – but the group also has a lot of similarity to other jazzy harmony groups at the time, like Side Effect or Creative Source – with super memorable tunes with catchy hooks without ever compromising the deeper soul touches. Wonderful stuff! Tracks include "Catch Me", "So Delicious", "How Do You Think It Feels?", "Charisma", and "Baby, Are You Coming Home With Me?".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the lyric sleeve.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Success
Columbia, 1982. Near Mint-
Before Martha Wash went on to success cutting vocals on soulful house numbers, she was one half of the Paul Jabara produced pop disco duo the Weather Girls. Freddie Scott

Lonely Man
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good+
An excellent album of uptown soul from Freddie – recorded after his work for Colpix, with arrangements by Belford Hendricks and Garry Sherman, in a sweet 60s New York mode! Freddie's vocals are great – much more mature than before, with a mixture of deep and sophisticated soul that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+
Righteous soul from The Free Movement – a mixed male/female harmony group with a feel that's similar to The Fifth Dimension or The Friends Of Distinction, but a bit hipper! Bonnie Bramlett

Sweet Bonnie Bramlett
Columbia, 1973. Very Good+
Blue eyed southern soul from Bonnie Bramlett – recorded in LA, but with a sound that's much more in keeping with Muscle Shoals! There's no real reason for this sound – no hidden producer or arranger from the southern indie scene who helped make the record hipper than usual – but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maurice White

Maurice White
Columbia, 1984. Sealed
The only solo album ever recorded by Maurice White – an upbeat and soulful set that's right up there with his best 80s work in Earth Wind & Fire! Like that group at the time, White's hitting a rhythmic side that's more electronic at points – letting beats and keyboard bits stand in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Edwin Starr

War & Peace
Gordy, 1970. Very Good+
A real breakout album for Edwin Starr – and the kind of full-on set that really helped give his music a bold new focus! Starr had already scored nicely on some playful tracks from the Motor City scene of the late 60s – but here, he emerges as a singer with a lot more depth than before ... LP, Vinyl record album

Young Hearts

Sweet Soul Shakin'
Minit, Late 60s. Very Good+
A rare early album by The Young Hearts – the group who later went onto cut more modern soul sounding tracks for 20th Century, but who are operating here in a nice tight northern soul style! The record's got plenty of nice harmonies, and features arrangements by Artie Freeman and a host of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Drennon & BBS

Collage
Friends & Co, 1975. Very Good+
A 70s New York classic – the first and best album by Eddie Drennon! Charles Brimmer

Expression Of Soul
Chelsea, 1975. Very Good+
A great album of southern soul tracks – oddly placed on the Chelsea label, which mostly did disco and pop soul records at the time – but who come through strong for Charles, making the record sparkle like some indie effort from below the Mason/Dixon line! Senator Jones did the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles

Genius + Soul = Jazz
Impulse, 1960. Sealed Gatefold
A wonderful chapter in the career of Ray Charles – and a key album in helping raise his respect level a notch or two in the early 60s! We might argue with the mathematics in the title – or at least joke that Ray was using equations as titles years before Anthony Braxton – but you ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Donaldson

Sweet Lou
Blue Note, 1974. Sealed
Sweet Lou, but funky Lou too – a perfect blend of modes that makes for one of Donaldson's last great albums for Blue Note! The set's got some fuller arrangements from Horace Ott – but given Ott's work in the indie soul world during the 60s, there's still a nice edge to the record too ... LP, Vinyl record album
