❔
Something of an addition to the Verve "songbook" mode of the 50s – but it's also one that's a lot more dynamic than the others, thanks to some very jazzy arrangements from Billy May! The groove here is very upbeat and jazzy – hard-swinging in the manner that May forged with Sinatra over at Capitol, with lots of twists and turns in the backings that really help transform the tunes! Anita's dynamic vocals really match the spirit of the arrangements – and soar out with a quality that's some of her best and boldest at Verve. Titles include "I Love You", "Get Out Of Town", "Just One Of Those Things", "Easy To Love", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", and "Love For Sale".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono MGM pressing. Cover has a cutout hole, light wear, ink stamp.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Clef, 1952. Very Good
One of Anita's first albums for Norman Granz – a beautiful 10" LP that features a great cover by David Stone Martin, and some strong sides that take her out of the swing years, into the 50s! Most of the tracks on the set were previously issued as singles, and collected here as an LP ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ella Fitzgerald

Ella At Duke's Place
Verve, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
A beautiful classic from mid 60s Verve – and the kind of a session that we wouldn't have expected to come off so well! In a style they were using with older artists at the time, Verve brought Ella and Duke into the studio together – with Duke's band and compositions providing the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1958. Near Mint-
A nice one from Ella – and a good move past the Songbooks mode that sometimes dogged her years on Verve a bit too much! This set has Ella singing to light arrangements by Frank DeVol – nothing fancy, but a good set of tunes that are perfect for the lovely style that Ella was hitting ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve/Book Of The Month, Early 1950s. Near Mint- 3LP Box Set

Late work from the great Billie Holiday – the kind of mature set that made Verve Records such a perfect home for the singer in the 50s! Verve, Late 50s. Very Good+
An excellent album of vocals by the great Joe Williams! Joe's always been a fine singer, but with Basie, he really gets the backing he needs to do his work the best. And although this album isn't as authenico as it might be, it still comes from a time when Verve really knew how to handle singers ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billie Holiday

Music For Torching
Verve, 1955. Very Good
About as classic as you can get for Billie Holiday on Verve – a wonderfully intimate small group session, recorded with top-shelf players and a smokey torchy mood! Hello Dolly! (2nd cover)
Verve, 1964. Near Mint-
LP...$6.99 11.99
A definite shot at the pop market by Ella Fitzgerald – quite possibly recorded as a follow-up to the 60s success of former singing partner Louis Armstrong, who's referenced nicely in Ella's rendition of the title hit! The first 4 tracks on the set were done in the UK, under the leadership of ... LP, Vinyl record album

A unique Verve album from this very hip trio – recorded in Hollywood, with a very playful feel as the group mixes it up on vocals! LP, Vinyl record album

Sing Baby Sing
Storyville, 1956. Very Good+
Sublime work from the duo of Jackie & Roy – a guy/gal vocal team, but one with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of!
