Big Band Sessions

LP (Item 545876) Verve, Late 50s/Early 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold
With arrangements and accompaniment by the bands of Gary McFarland, Jimmy Guiffre, Johnny Mandel, and Billy May.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Live At Mingos
Emily, 1979. Near Mint-
This is the sort of work we love the most from Anita O'Day – not her big band years, or her tight 50s albums on Verve – but instead the intimate small club recordings that dominated her later career, which showcase a singer with more craft, more maturity than ever before! Anita had ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1956/1963. Near Mint-
An early 60s repackaging of the album Anita – one of the strongest of Anita's mid 50s outings for Verve – and a tightly-crafted set that benefits from some good arrangements from Buddy Bregman! The format is perfect for Anita – giving her little space to have to make decisions, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1959. Near Mint-
Something of an addition to the Verve "songbook" mode of the 50s – but it's also one that's a lot more dynamic than the others, thanks to some very jazzy arrangements from Billy May! The groove here is very upbeat and jazzy – hard-swinging in the manner that May forged with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Small combo work – with Ben Webster on tenor sax, Oscar Peterson on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, and even a bit of jazz violin from Stuff Smith! LP, Vinyl record album
Verve/Mobile Fidelity, 1957. Near Mint- Gatefold
Late work from the great Billie Holiday – the kind of mature set that made Verve Records such a perfect home for the singer in the 50s! Where other labels might have pushed too much to try to get Billie into more commercial, or more straightforward modes – Verve just relaxes into the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 50s. Very Good+ 4LP Box Set
Ella's performing songs written by or associated with Duke–what could be better? Here she's backed by two different Ellington groups–-one a big band, the other a small group, whose members included Stuff Smith, Barney Kessel, and Ben Webster. Titles include "Rockin' In ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1958. Very Good
A nice one from Ella – and a good move past the Songbooks mode that sometimes dogged her years on Verve a bit too much! This set has Ella singing to light arrangements by Frank DeVol – nothing fancy, but a good set of tunes that are perfect for the lovely style that Ella was hitting ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1961. Near Mint-
A great small combo set from Ella Fitzgerald – and a record that maybe has a bit more bite than some of her Songbook sessions from the time! The combo's a great one – with excellent piano from Lou Levy, balanced with guitar work from Herb Ellis – a pair whose chromatic ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 50s. Very Good
A classic vocal set from Ella – filled with standards from the Rodgers & Hart songbook! LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1963. Very Good+
A later entry in Ella's Songbook series for Verve – but a great one too, thanks to some strong arrangements from Nelson Riddle! Riddle's working here at a level that he brought to his earlier sessions with Frank Sinatra – one that colors in the tunes with just the right amount of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 50s. Very Good+
An excellent album of vocals by the great Joe Williams! Joe's always been a fine singer, but with Basie, he really gets the backing he needs to do his work the best. And although this album isn't as authenico as it might be, it still comes from a time when Verve really knew how to handle singers ... LP, Vinyl record album
