LP, Vinyl record album

One of the key records in Mel Brown's legendary run for Impulse Records – a set that's grittier than most other sides recorded for the label in the 60s, but which also has the tight funky undercurrent we've come to expect from groovy Impulse too! Brown's got a strong blues lineage in his instrument, but he plays it here with a lean, mean style that's mighty nice – no cliches at all, and some of the funky jazz vibe you'd hear from Melvin Sparks or Grant Green on their late 60s work for Blue Note. The group's small, too – which helps keep things tight – and other players include Terry Evans on rhythm guitar, Mack Johnson on trumpet, Clifford Solomon on tenor, Ronald Brown on bass, and Paul Humphrey on drums. Titles include a monster version of "Ode to Billie Joe", plus "Swamp Fever", "African Sweets", "Stop", "Miss An", "W2 Withholding", and "Chunk a Funk". (Rainbow label pressing. Cover has a small cutout hole.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Blues For We
Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
A record that's a lot more jazz than you'd guess from the title – a seminal set from the mighty Mel Brown! The "blues" here are hardly the familiar kind – and instead, the album really stresses the more soul-based sound of Mel Brown's work – thanks to some very groovy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pharoah Sanders is working here with some excellent horn players in the frontline – Woody Shaw on trumpet and Gary Bartz on alto sax – both of whom really bring a lot of power to the record! Jazz 'Round The World
Impulse, 1963. Very Good- Gatefold
Yusef Lateef explores a number of different world music rhythms on a mix of woodwind instruments that includes tenor, basoon, flute, oboe, and shanas. He's joined here by the great Richard Williams on trumpet, whose playing with Lateef is always excellent. The rest of the group's made up of some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Ayler's last album ever – and an incredibly strange batch of tracks that shows perfectly the kind of stylistic and emotional struggle he was going through in the final years of his life. Like the albums New Grass and Love Cry, this one shows Ayler toying with influences from other genres ... LP, Vinyl record album
World Galaxy
Impulse, 1972. Very Good- Gatefold
One of Alice Coltrane's most ambitious albums of the early years – recorded with a full set of heavenly orchestrations! A surprisingly enchanting album of piano work from Charles Mingus – one of a few he cut on the instrument, and quite different than his regular work on bass! Unlike the bold, angry role that Mingus would take on as a leader, the approach here is very personal and introspective – long ... LP, Vinyl record album
Everybody Loves A Lover
Impulse, 1964. Good+ Gatefold
A simple formula, but one of Shirley's best records from the mid 60s, and a tight batch of quartet tracks that also features Stanley Turrentine on tenor. The title cut's a classic jazz stepper in Chicago, with a subtly loping groove that works pretty darn well. Other tracks include "Blue ... LP, Vinyl record album
Americans In Europe Volume 1
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
If you read these pages often enough, you'll know that we're big fans of recordings made by American expatriot players while living in Europe during the 60's. A tremendous little album from Sonny Rollins – one of his most sharp-edged sessions of the mid 60s, and a bold departure from some of his previous work for RCA! Impulse, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Sam Rivers' most striking albums for Impulse, a record that has him leading a fairly large group – working in an "orchestral context", as the notes on the cover say, but not really a jazz orchestra – more of a freewheeling avant ensemble, in the tradition of work by ... Impulse, 1969. Very Good- Gatefold
Quite possibly the best-remembered album from Pharoah Sanders' legendary run at Impulse Records – a set that crossed over big, and sold to countless folks who might not have bought a jazz album this hip otherwise!
