Kulu Se Mama

LP (Item 16258) Impulse, 1966 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
One of our favorite albums ever from John Coltrane – but a record that's sometimes eclipsed by the genius of A Love Supreme! The feel here is very similar to that one – long tracks that introduce a new mode of searching, spiritual jazz for the 60s – one that's performed by a core quintet with Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones – but which also features added players on the side-long title track! "Kulu Se Mama" is a tremendously bold statement in music – one that features a bit of spiritual vocals from Juno Lewis, plus added bass clarinet from Donald Garrett, tenor from Pharoah Sanders, and drums from Frank Butler. The two other tracks – "Vigil" and "Welcome" – are performed by a quartet, but are still equally great!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Orange and black label stereo Capitol Record Club pressing. Cover has light surface wear, some edge wear, half split top seam, and a thin stain and some heavy wear at the bottom edge.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
John Coltrane's classic – and only – recording as a leader for Blue Note! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Double LP set that brings together two Coltrane sides for Prestige from the late 50's – Black Pearls and The Believer. Love Supreme
Impulse, 1964. Sealed Gatefold

Impulse, 1963. Very Good+
Soaring and soulful work from the legendary John Coltrane – a tremendous live set that's one of his best early 60s albums! Ballads
Impulse, 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold
A perennial favorite in the John Coltrane catalog – a beautiful set of standards, handled in a warm laidback style – but which still has some of the depth of soul that John Coltrane brought to his more experimental work on Impulse Records! The album's a classic introduction to the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Intensity
Impulse, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Fantastic work from John Klemmer – hard-edged, exploratory, with a mix of spiritualism and soulfulness, and a few touches of easy soloing. Todd Cochran (Bayete) plays Fender Rhodes, Woody Theus is on drums, and Klemmer's got an echoplex hooked up to his tenor on a few cuts. The tracks were ... LP, Vinyl record album
