Live In San Francisco

LP (Item 12303) Impulse, 1966 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold

Archie Shepp — Live In San Francisco ... CD 9.99
A great counterpart to some of Archie Shepp's studio albums for Impulse – a live date recorded in San Francisco, with a slightly freer, sharper edge! The sound is almost free at times, but always with that strong sense of focus that Archie brought to his brilliant work of the time – and the group's a well-honed ensemble who really understand each others motivations and inspirations – Roswell Rudd on trombone, Donald Garrett and Lewis Worrell on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums – all almost working at an ESP level together. Shepp plays a bit of piano on the record – in sharply angular tones that are almost more modern than his tenor – and titles include "The Wedding", "Wherever June Bugs Go", and "Keep Your Heart Right".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Orange and black label stereo pressing with Van Gelder stamp – a nice copy.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Arista Freedom, 1975. Near Mint-
There might be a trumpet in Archie Shepp's soul, but the album features him on tenor and soprano sax – working in a wonderfully spiritual vein that's almost in the same mode as his early 70s work on Impulse! The album features some very long, drawn out tracks – but ones that build ... LP, Vinyl record album

Archie Shepp

Montreux One
Arista Freedom, 1975. Very Good+
Great live material from Shepp – not out or crazy, but also not spiritual or hippy dippy, either. The record's kind of a perfectly soulful straight ahead set – in a mode that hints at the traditional direction Shepp would take at the time, but with a lot more interesting moments. The ... Archie Shepp

Yasmina, A Black Woman
BYG/Actuel (France), 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
Archie Shepp at his spiritual best – recording in Paris in 1969, and absorbing a heck of a lot pan-African influences! Shepp's in the lead on tenor – working with a great lineup of up-and coming avant geniuses – Clifford Thortnton on cornet, Lester Bowie on trumpet, Roscoe ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
A classic bit of avant Shepp for Impulse – recorded in the mid 60s, at the same time as the Live in San Francisco album, with the same quintet, but not issued until years later! The album is in a different vein than the San Francisco album – one that shows the band stretching out more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington & John Coltrane

Duke Ellington & John Coltrane
Impulse, 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold
A seminal meeting of the old and new generations of jazz in the 60s – put together in perfect Impulse fashion! At some level, this is actually an early 60s John Coltrane Quartet album – with Duke Ellington sitting in for McCoy Tyner on piano, as that's the lineup on about half of the ... Marion Brown

Vista
ABC/Impulse, 1975. Near Mint-
A strangely wonderful album from Marion Brown – quite different from his other work on Impulse, with a mellow electric edge that gives it a warm and laidback feel! The approach here is much more soulful than before – with finely crafted tunes that weave Brown's work on alto with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Evans

Out Of The Cool
Impulse, 1961. Sealed Gatefold
A pivotal session for Gil Evans – one that brought his genius to the American public strongly and successfully, without the help of Miles Davis! Sure, Gil had recorded albums as a leader before this one – but the sparkling quality of this set is right up there with the charts he ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
Soaring and soulful work from the legendary John Coltrane – a tremendous live set that's one of his best early 60s albums! The groove is open and free – filled with pulsating modal rhythms, and handled with a slightly more relaxed feeling than some of Trane's studio work from the same ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great little album – a lot better than you might think from the concept! After the death of JFK, Oliver Nelson penned this extremely strong tribute to the man – featuring snippets of speeches made by Kennedy during his time in office as president, used as bridges between jazz based ... Alice Coltrane

Lord Of Lords
Impulse, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
Beautifully high concept work from Alice Coltrane – the kind of record you'd use to announce the arrival of a new king – or lord, for that matter! The record features Coltrane at the head of a large group of string players – creating a full, rich sound that serves as the backdrop ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Ballads
Impulse, 1962. Very Good+ Gatefold
A perennial favorite in the John Coltrane catalog – a beautiful set of standards, handled in a warm laidback style – but which still has some of the depth of soul that John Coltrane brought to his more experimental work on Impulse Records! The album's a classic introduction to the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A great collection of Albert Ayler's late work for Impulse – some of his most unusual sides ever cut to wax, and very different from his work on labels like ESP. The general feel is one of searching – as Ayler works in a number of different modes to try to reach new audiences, and hit ... LP, Vinyl record album
