Lorraine Ellison

LP (Item 2357) Warner, 1974 — Condition: Very Good+
Fantastic vocals from the legendary Lorraine Ellison – a hell of a singer, and one who never fully got her due – despite the top-shelf treatment she got here from Warner Brothers! Arrangements are by Mark Jordan and Nick DeCaro, production is by Ted Templeman – and the set is a mix of spiritual and secular soul, with titles that include "Walk Around Heaven", "No Relief", "Country Woman's Prayer", "Do Better Than You're Doin", "If Only I Could See Him", and "I'll Fly Away".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has wide clear tape on all seams, some surface & edge wear, tiny star stickers on the back.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Roger (Roger Troutman)

Many Facets Of Roger
Warner, 1981. Near Mint-
There's many facets of Roger – and they're all pretty darn funky! From this vantage point, all we can think of is that Roger Troutman must have had some sort of crystal ball to see into the hip hop sampling future – either that, or he was busy cooking up west coast gangster funk drones ... Prince

Controversy
Warner, 1981. Near Mint-
A key moment of transition for Prince – a set that's got him toning down the longer-haired look of previous records, and going for the new wave sense of style that would help him cross into many audiences in years to come! Controversy still has Prince singing to the already-converted, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Curtom/Warner, 1973. Very Good-
Killer early soul by Leroy Hutson – and a record that really shows him opening up as a vocalist and songwriter! Leroy's got a sound here that's pivotal in terms of Chicago soul – still some of the down-to-earth vibes of the city's indie scene in the 60s, but with that growing sense of ... Prince

Prince
Warner, 1979. Very Good+
An overlooked record in the grand scheme – which is unforgivable in our book! This self-titled album is Prince's second album, and already his vision is becoming a little more focused, and you can really hear the seeds of his later efforts – a really remarkable, unique, and fascinating ... Dionne Warwick

Dionne (Warner)
Warner, 1972. Very Good+
A great post-Scepter album by Dionne Warwick – one that still has her working with Burt Bacharach, but at a level that's somehow more mature, more adult than even before! There's a gentle quality here that gets beyond the straighter pop of Warwick's 60s hits, and moves into the realm ... LP, Vinyl record album

David Ruffin

So Soon We Change
Warner, 1979. Very Good+
Warm and wonderful soul from David Ruffin – key proof that the singer could keep on going strong, long after his earlier fame at Motown! The record's got a new sense of sophistication that really breaks David into new territory – a style that's nicely different than the backings Ruffin ... LP, Vinyl record album
Warner, 1995. Near Mint- 2LP
A great return to form for Prince – even though at the time, we all had to refer to him with an unpronounceable symbol! There's a lean, funky vibe to most of the record – almost a step back to the unified group approach of his mid 80s classics – and even though a few sonic ... LP, Vinyl record album
Paisley Park/Warner, 1987. Sealed 2LP
A fantastic record from Prince – a double-length set that came out at a time when the purple one was brimming over with energy and new ideas – and a step slightly in the direction of more socially conscious material! Everything that was great about Prince before the record is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Zapp

Zapp II
Warner, 1982. Near Mint-
Seminal work from Roger Troutman and Zapp – a killer batch of cuts that forever changed the sound of funk! The group's "wheeeeeeet/whomp!" sound is very firmly in place by the time of this release – and the sound here is even more electric than their debut – a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Westbound, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold
An insane classic from one of the wildest funk bands ever! According to reports, George Clinton and the band cut this set in a marathon 48-hour stretch in the studio – working like mad all night and day long, after dropping a motherlode of some mighty fine acid! We don't know if that story's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Avco, 1972. Very Good+
Landmark harmony soul from The Stylistics – a set that's every bit as wonderful as their debut, with the kind of sweet, soulful sound that got played over and over and over and over again back in the day! The album's got a subtle sort of power, though – one that lies not only in its ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sussex, 1973. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A brilliant double live album by Bill Withers – different than his studio work, and every bit as essential!
