Jimmy Smith — Any Number Can Win ... CD 6.99
Sessions like this are proof that Jimmy was one of the most fantastic organ players ever – as his work with large arrangements (supplied here by Claus Ogerman) always seems to groove better than his work with small combos. His sound is impeccable, and he soars ahead of the rest of the orchestra with hard biting soulful solos that are just amazing. Titles include "The Ape Woman", "Any Number Can Win", "G'Won Train", "Tubs", and "Ruby". Packaged in a nice groovy gatefold, too!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo MGM pressing. Cover has a name in pen.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jimmy Smith

Boss
Verve, 1968. Very Good
A great little small combo record that proves that Jimmy was still hitting strong in the late 60s! Although the bulk of the more famous Verve material featured Jimmy in larger settings or singing or playing pop material, there were also some nice stripped-down sides hidden in the catalog, which ... Jimmy Smith

Respect
Verve, 1967. Very Good Gatefold
Mad respect for Jimmy Smith – a cool small group record that's different than some of his bigger-concept, larger arrangement records for Verve! The groove here is tight and right on the money – and the tracks are a bit longer than other Verve sessions too – as the master really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Smith

Crazy! Baby
Blue Note, 1960. Very Good
One of Jimmy's most classic albums for Blue Note – and a key example of why his solo skills on the organ surpassed most of his contemporaries! Count Basie

April In Paris
Verve, 1955. Near Mint-
One of Basie's biggest albums – but still a work of pure genius! Bill Evans & Shelly Manne

Empathy
Verve, 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold
The cover co-credits Bill Evans and Shelly Manne as the leader of the set – and that distinction's an important one – as the record has a slightly different feel than some of Bill's other 60s work for Verve! The sound is often a bit stronger, somewhat bolder – and although Manne's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
Although Gil Evans is probably best remembered for his work behind Miles Davis, the albums he cut on his own are actually even more interesting, and feature a far-reaching conception of modern jazz, executed by Evans, and some of the top players of his day. This great album from 1964 features a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Teddy Wilson

Impeccable Mr Wilson
Verve, 1956. Near Mint-
The title's certainly right on this one – as Teddy Wilson's approach to the keys is as impeccable as his look on the cover of the record! The tunes are short, but they're filled with plenty of bright notes – a masterful illustration of economy on the keys of the piano – but one ... LP, Vinyl record album
