One that we heard way too much when it was out, but which we kind of love now! The album's part of H&O's great comeback years in the early 80s – a time when they were mixing their white boy soul with some nice 80s groove and electro touches, often going for a spare mix of groove and ... Nona Hendryx at the height of her 80s glory – looking mighty fierce in a fencing costume on the cover! As with her previous set, this one's done with heavy help from Material – who bring in a beat heavy sound that's kind of a mainstream variation on the underground New York groove they' ... A stone early winner from The Friends Of Distinction – featuring a great set of pop soul tunes that really let the group shine in the harmony department! Vocal arrangements are by Jerry Peters – who really pushes the structure of the vocals, taking the singing to a level only hinted at ... LP, Vinyl record album
An early classic from LaBelle – wonderful vocals mixed with both heavy funk and laidback spacey soul touches! The group had really hit their stride by this point – as the trio of Nona Hendryx/Sarah Dash/Patti Labelle push way past their girl group roots – and even some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
The debut album from Fonzi Thornton – a singer who didn't even need to cop a Happy Days name to get our attention! The style here is tight 80s groove at its best – lots of keyboards and basslines driving the tunes right from the start, and a sound that's pretty lean overall – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Music beyond description or definition – one of Jon Lucien's legendary albums for RCA – a true pinnacle in the generation of sophisticated 70s soul! The sound here is a unique blend that's never been heard before – and hardly ever since, even though many have tried – a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Early work by Baby Cortez – featuring his famous "Happy Organ" single, plus a number of other instrumental groovers that have a very similar feel. While Cortez may not be as hard and heavy here as on his later 70s sides, the album is noteworthy for the work that it did in trimming ... LP, Vinyl record album
A record that really has The Main Ingredient coming into their own – finding a new sort of righteous energy that really sets them apart from some of their contemporaries – even some of the other east coast soul groups recording for RCA at the time! The title track is a long-standing ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of the definitive Sam Cooke recordings of the 60s – never issued at the time, but one of the crucial sides that's provided a later look at his brilliance from the time. A great album filled with hard breaks, tight choppy guitars, and a deep funky sound. This is one of the best early albums by the Nite Liters, and it's filled with great grooves like "Funky-Doo", "Stinkin Charlie", and "K-Jee" – but just about every track is a ... LP, Vinyl record album
