Eddy ArnoldComplete RCA Victor Christmas Recordings ... CD
RCA/Real Gone, 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.98
Warm sounds for the Holiday season – a double-length set of Christmas tunes, sung by the great Eddy Arnold! Eddy recorded most of these numbers at a time when he was at the height of his countrypolitan talents – able to croon a tune with a smooth, mellow approach that almost made him the Perry Como of the country world – although set up with more of a Nasvhille vibe, thanks to producer Chet Atkins! The match of Atkins and Arnold is one of the all-time greats in mid-century pop – and the duo seem to push themselves even more strongly on this seasonal material. The CD features the full 1961 Christmas album recorded by Eddie, plus loads more Holiday singles – most of which have never been collected before. 26 titles in all – with tracks that include "Christmas Can't Be Far Away", "White Christmas", "Up On The Housetop", "Will Santa Come To Shanty Town", "Jingle Bell Rock", "Christmas", "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day", "Silent Night", "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas", "Winter Wonderland", "The Angel & The Stranger", and "New Year's Greeting". ✨✧ Chet AtkinsComplete RCA & Columbia Christmas Recordings (Christmas With Chet Atkins/East Tennessee Christmas/bonus tracks) ... CD
Sony/Real Gone, 1961/1983. New Copy 2CD ... $23.99 24.99
A pair of Holiday albums from Nashville guitar legend Chet Atkins – back to back in a 2CD set, complete with a huge amount of bonus material too! First up is the classic Christmas With Chet Atkins – a sweet strummy Christmas album from the great Chet – a set that's filled with guitar-based tunes that have a special Holiday feel – some of which have warm vocal passages from the Anita Kerr quartet! We always love Chet on RCA during the classic years, but his warm sound is especially nice for the Holidays – a sort of cozy, cuddly approach to guitar that sounds great on these familiar tunes – and which is recorded here with some of those perfect RCA country touches of the early 60s! Titles include "Jingle Bell Rock", "Jingle Bells", "Silver Bells", "White Christmas", "Blue Christmas", "Silent Night", and "Little Drummer Boy". Next is East Tennessee Christmas – an early 80s album from guitar great Chet Atkins – one that really updates his sound for a modern generation, yet still leaves plenty of room for his masterful work on the strings! The record has fuller backings on most tracks – gentle orchestrations that still have the guitar in the lead – and there's also some chorus vocals, in a mode that's kind of an 80s take on the older Anita Kerr Singers approach. Titles include "East Tennesse Christmas", "Let It Snow", "I'll Be Home For Christmas", "Away In A Manger", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "Jingle Bell Rock". CD set features LOTS of bonus tracks – including "Christmas Carols", "Jingle Bells", "Greensleeves", "Bells Of St Mary's", "Winter Wonderland (1976)", "White Christmas (1976)", "Jingle Bells (1976)", "Silver Bells (1976)", "Ave Maria", "Winter Walkin", "Sleighbells Reindeer & Snhow", and lots more. Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersBest Of The Columbia & RCA/Vik Years 1956 to 1959 ... CD
Sony/Real Gone, Late 50s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 19.99
A nice collection of overlooked work from Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – not the oft-reissued material from the group's years at Blue Note, but instead some slightly more obscure sides recorded for Columbia and RCA! The work here also represents a time when Blakey was experimenting a bit more with the group – a stretch right before he settled into some of the more-recorded groups with Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, and Bobby Timmons – but still had a great ear for important younger talent! Players here include Bill Hardman, Donald Byrd, and Lee Morgan on trumpets; Jackie McLean on alto; Johnny Griffin, Hank Mobley, and Benny Golson on tenor; and Horace Silver and Sam Dockery on piano! The set includes material from the albums Hard Bop, Drum Suite, Jazz Messengers, Night In Tunisia, and some of the French-only live recordings that Blakey did for RCA in the late 50s – and the set features 16 tracks that include "Nica's Dream", "Evidence", "Blues March For Europe No 1", "Along Came Manon", "Lester Left Town", "Night In Tunisia (live)", "Moanin With Hazel", "Night In Tunisia (take 3)", "Ecaroh", "Cubano Chant", "Almost Like Being In Love", "The Sacrifie", and "Couldn't It Be You (take 4)". Kenny CarterShowdown – The Complete 1966 RCA Recordings ... CD
RCA/Kent (UK), 1966. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The long-overdue release of the complete RCA recordings of Kenny Carter – a hell of a singer who should have been huge, but who only saw a few tracks issues as singles back in the day! This set corrects that fact, and brings together 22 titles that Kenny recorded for RCA – magnificent music that often rivals the best of the time from Walter Jackson or Jerry Butler – from the rich arrangements provided behind the vocals, to the fantastic reach that Carter brings to the lyrics – mature, expressive, and with a balance between pride, power, and honest emotion that's really stunning. Had Carter gotten to continue in this vein, he would have been instrumental in shaping the role of the male singer in soul music during the 60s – but at least he finally gets his due here, in a stunning set list that includes "I Still Love Her", "You'd Better Get Hip Girl", "Don't Go", "Showdown", "My Love", "Living In The Land Of Heartache", "Round In Circles", "Like A Big Bad Rain", "I Can't Stop Laughing", "Lights Out", "How Can You Say Goodbye", "I'll Know", and "I Believe In You". ExcitersSoul Motion – The Complete Bang, Shout, & RCA Recordings 1966 to 1969 ... CD
Bang/Shout/RCA/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Incredible work by The Exciters – material we totally love to death, most of which is a lot harder-hitting than the group's earlier hits in the 60s! The package pulls together their post-UA recordings for the Bang, Shout, and RCA labels – the first to of which are represented by singles, the last by a full LP and some great extra material from 45s – all of which is really incredible stuff that moves way past any pop soul expectations you may have! Production is by Bert Berns on the non-RCA material, and Larry Banks on the RCA sides – and both producers bring an incredibly hip sound to the recordings, mixing the unique deep soul lead of Brenda Reid with some very groovy backings – arranged by Artie Butler, George Patterson, and Teacho Wiltshire, all of whom bring something unique to the mix. The force of these sides is amazing – almost a revolution in female soul, captured in the history of one group – and the booklet features very full notes on the girls, culled from interviews, and telling the story of their legendary years in the 60s. CD contains all of the legendary Caviar & Chitlins LP, plus lots of singles – 21 tracks that include "Take One Step I'll Take Two", "Soul Motion", "Number One", "A Little Bit Of Soap", "Number One", "You Don't Know What You're Missing", "Blowing Up My Mind", "Movin Too Slow", "Turn Me On", "A Year Ago", "You Got Me", "Always", "Fight That Feelin", "Give It All", and "Weddings Make Me Cry". RCA/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 8CD ... $44.99
A massive collection of music – eight full albums from Evelyn Champagne King, plus bonus tracks as well! King was a hell of a singer who came along at just the right time – as cool and classy enough to have sung jazz in decades before, but with a richness that also really fit the spirit of 70s soul – and was perfect for the new infusion of grooves that the music got during the disco generation! King could sing disco, but also hit a lot wider range too – which made for some really well-formed records during her years at RCA – all of which are collected here! Unlike some of her crossover contemporaries, Evelyn managed to grow with the years and stay strong as the 80s moved in – shifting styles a bit, but never losing her groove – and working here with production and arrangements from the likes of T Life, Kashif, Willie Lester, Morrie Brown, Andre Cymone, and Leon Sylvers – all of whom help shape the groove. The box features the full albums Smooth Talk, Music Box, Call On Me, I'm In Love, Get Loose, Face To Face, So Romantic, and A Long Time Coming – nearly all of which are presented with bonus tracks – all wrapped up in a box set, with a 40 page booklet of notes. RCA, 1980s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Post-Motown music from Diana Ross – cuts from the 80s years at RCA when she was really changing up her sound! The label offered Diana a lot of freedom in her music, and she used her time at the company to really try out a wide range of new sounds – some that recall her earlier years, some that lean more towards some of the more crossover soul RCA was doing at the time. Production and arrangements are by Lionel Richie, Tom Dowd, Barry Gibb, Ray Parker Jr, and others – and titles include "Muscles", "Chain Reaction", "Experience", "It's Never too Late", "Love Or Loneliness", "Missing You", "Selfish One", "Tell Me Again", "Endless Love", "It's Hard For Me To Say", "Being In Love With You", "In Your Arms", "Mirror Mirror", and "Let's Go Up". Toshiko AkiyoshiKogun (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $18.99
Brilliantly bold work from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi – an artist who's really coming into her own for the 70s – stepping out in a big band format that would win her a wide new audience on both sides of the Pacific! The album's one of the first to feature the ensemble co-led with husband Lew Tabackin – a group that features strong work from American players who include Dick Spencer and Gary Foster on alto saxes, Tabackin and Tom Peterson on tenor, Bill Perkins on baritone, Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets, and Charles Loper and Jim Sawyer on trombones. The horns are only part of the picture, though – as the inventive writing and arranging from Akiyoshi is what really makes the album great – a strong sense of painting with sound, while still keeping things swinging – really unlocking all the best elements that had been opened up for larger ensembles in the previous few years. The set features all original tracks that include "Kogun", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Elegy", and "Memory". CD

A hokey title and cover, but a great little record – a lesser-known gem from the Toshiko Akioshi big band, recorded in the mid 80s for Japanese release! Toshiko's still working strongly with reedman Lew Tabackin here – and as always, the sound of the reeds really make the record – not only on the bold ensemble passages, but also on the snakey, well-crafted solos that slide out of the fuller arrangements – letting Lew, Frank Wess, and Jim Snidero contribute some really great work on the longer tracks. Titles include "Ten Gallon Shuffle", "Fading Beauty", "Blue Dream", and "Happy Hoofer" – and in case you're wondering, that's a young Monday Michiru on the cover! CD

Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandFrom Toshiko With Love (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the lesser-known albums in the great run of big band records cut by pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and reedman Lew Tabackin – and a set with a bit of a difference, too – as this time out, Tabackin wrote all the tunes, although Toshiko still handles all the arrangements and orchestrations! Some of the numbers are a bit shorter than on some of the other TALT group recordings – and it might be our imagination, but they also seem to have some more pronounced reed solos – moments that really remind us what a great saxophonist Tabackin can be, and a master of the powerful, yet understated emotional moment. Titles include "Tanuki's Night Out", "Falling Petal", "Yet Another Tear", and "A Bit Byas'd". CD

A 70s classic from the team of Toshiko Akioshi and Lew Tabackin – a duo who did for the jazz ensemble mode in their generation what Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland did in the 60s! The material here is wonderfully inventive – the kind of compositions that Toshiko wouldn't have even written in her smaller combo years – fleshed out here by a fantastic group that includes Lew Tabackin and Gary Foster on reeds, and Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets – all in a setting where the voices of the individual members really get a lot of space to shine! RCA (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $18.99
It's hard to get at the brilliance of the 70s albums from Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin in words – but we'll try just a bit! The records are almost an anomaly – creative big band records at a time when most folks were leaving the format behind – put together by a duo who weren't really stars in the years before, at least on the American market – but who really found a way to shine in this new setting! Toshiko composed and arranged all the material – opening up a whole new depth in her songwriting – and she also delivers superb piano solos that have the dexterity of her earlier work, but also a new level of complexity too. Tabackin is wonderful as well – fantastic on flute and tenor – and also providing strong inspiration to reed soloists Dick Spencer and Gary Foster too. Emil Richards does a nice percussion solo on one track – and titles include "Notorious Tourist From East", "Deracinated Flower", "Yellow Is Mellow", and "Mobile". CD

Hard-swinging big band material – with a heavy emphasis on drums! The album is a suite of six tracks – all written by either Manny Albam or Ernie Wilkins, both of whom arrange the groups on the set – really letting them open up nicely on the album's longish tracks. Manny and Ernie were two of the more soulful arrangers of their day – and they get some strong performances out of the groups, letting players like Conte Candoli on trumpet, Hal McKusick on alto, Al Cohn on tenor, and Freddie Green on guitar open up in longer tracks driven to intensity by some great drum work handled by the lesser-known (but excellent) Ted Sommer. Early American work from Julie Andrews – recorded right at the start of her big fame on the stage, but with styles that almost hearken back more to the sound of her homeland! Many titles have musical elements or themes that echo the British Isles – a few traditional folk tunes here, or more sentimental styles there – all arranged by Irwin Kostal in ways that are not as swinging or bold as some of her more dynamic Broadway material. There's a sense of subtlety to some of the tunes, and a bit of sadness too – and titles on the set include "Canterbury Fair", "To A Wild Rose", "Where'er You Walk", "These Precious Things", "The Floral Dance", and "London Pride". A fantastic collection of work from those years when singer Ann-Margret first popped up on the American market – young, fresh, and sexy – and willing to do whatever it took to make her music stand out from the pack! Ann-Margret's got a vocal range that's maybe deeper than most of her contemporaries – a lusty growl that makes you feel like she's singing from way down in her toes – with odd bluesy currents mixed with jazzier backings – all in a mode that has really blows away the sultry tones of previous singers like Peggy Lee or Julie London. If you love the Axe, you'll find plenty to love here – spare, dark orchestrations, often with a subtle hint of funk in the rhythms, some jazzy flourishes, and this bold sense of studio majesty that marks Axelrod as one of the most inventive producers of his time! The sound's one that gave birth to a whole generation of hip hoppers and beatheads – and the proceedings are conducted by Cannonball Adderley, with a feel that's similar to other Adderley/Axelrod high-concept sets – like Soul Of The Bible or Soul Zodiac. Titles include "Overture", "Worthy Is the Lamb", "Behold Recitative", "Comfort Ye My People", and "And The Angel Said Unto Them". CD

✨✧ Bobby BareBobby Bare Sings Shel Silverstein Plus (8CD set) ... CD
RCA/Bear Family (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 8CD ... $216.99 249.99
A huge tribute to one of the most important partnerships in country music during the 70s – the vocal talents of Bobby Bare and the offbeat songwriting skills of Shel Silverstein – one that helped both artists really hit their heights during the decade! Bare had cut some great work for RCA during the 60s, but was floundering a bit after a brief stop at Mercury Records at the end of the decade – and Silverstein was a multi-voiced artist who was part of the Chicago folk world, a member of Hugh Hefner's inner circle, and both a cartoonist and a clever wordsmith – but one who never had the right showcase for his own songs. Johnny Cash and a few others sung Silverstein songs – but it was really Bobby Bare who found the right platform for Shel's music – taking the hip Midwestern words into more of a down-home spirit in Nashville – blending things perfectly as Bare really started to explore the format of album-length expression in the 70s. This huge set brings together all the remnants of that partnership – and includes 25 unreleased tracks, plus the full albums Lullabys Legends & Lies, Hard Time Hungrys, Singin In The Kitchen, Great American Saturday Night , Down &Y Dirty, Drink & Crazy, and lots more material – plus a huge 128 page hardcover book that has a look at the career of both artists, lots of photos, lyrics, and session details too! 137 tracks on 8CDs – and a stunning collection! Bobby BareDetroit City & Other Hits/500 Miles From Home/Talk Me Some Sense/Bird Named Yesterday (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Four gems from the early RCA years of Bobby Bare – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Detroit City – a classic early album from the great Bobby Bare – proof that the man had plenty of charms in the years before he started working with hip singer/songwriter material! The set kicks off with the huge title cut – a track that Bobby does better than just about anyone else – and it follows with a host of well-chosen cuts and some surprisingly great originals – showing an early songwriting side of Bare that didn't always get exposure in later years! Bobby's got a great edge in his vocals, even young – less of the pop modes that you'd hear on some of his singles – on titles that include "Shame On Me", "Detroit City", "Is It Wrong", "Dear Wastebasket", "The Gods Were Angry With Me", "Book Of Love", and "I Don't Believe I'll Fall In Love Today". 500 Miles is early genius from Bobby Bare – a set that shows just how great he was at the start – able to bring a special spin to a country tune, even amidst some of the fuller Chet Atkins production at RCA! Bobby's got a very unique style – maybe more urban than you might expect, but still with a twang – a quality that always made him perfect for songs of moving and longing, as in the title cut. There's plenty of other numbers in that mode, too – including a few penned by Bobby himself – in a lineup that includes "Let Me Tell You about Mary", "Abilene", "Worried Man Blues", "Sailor Man", "Homestead On The Farm", "Gotta Travel On", "500 Miles From Home", and "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight". Talk Me Some Sense is wonderful work from Bobby Bare – a record that already shows the young singer reaching for hip material, and coming up with a mature way of putting over a tune that's unlike anyone else! There's some slight currents of folk in the music – but as with the early John Hartford records on RCA, the style is more country overall – but also in a very different space too – inheriting some of the hipper inflections of the changing 60s, even amidst familiar RCA production – which puts a really special spin on all the tunes. Titles include "A Little Bit Later On Down The Line", "Got Leavin On Her Mind", "Long Black Veil", "All The Good Times Are Past & Gone", "You Can't Stop The Wind From Blowing", "Heaven Help My Soul", "It Ain't Me Babe", and the great original "Passin Through". Bird Named Yesterday is one of the coolest Bobby Bare albums of the 60s – a precursor to some of his concept albums of the 70s, but done in a bit of a different mode too! Bobby delivers these little recitations between most of the tunes – speaking in different characters, but in a way that evokes some of the larger spirit that Lee Hazlewood brought to his projects of the period – a quality that's also echoed in the way that Bare puts over a tune – mature, and with a nice sense of distance that brings about a slight current of wit – quite unusual for RCA country at the time! The set includes some great tunes by a young Jack Clement – and titles include "Somebody Bought My Old Hometown", "The Air Conditioner Song", "The Day The Saw Mill Closed Down", "Bird Named Yesterday", "The Old Gang's Gone", and "They Covered Up The Old Swimmin Hole". Bonus tracks include "The Town That Broke My Heart", "Don't Do Like I Done Son", "Sandy's Crying Again", and "When Am I Ever Gonna Settle Down". CD

Kathy, we'd follow you anywhere – not just for your sultry look on the cover of this album, but for your warm and wonderful vocals throughout the set! The notes describe Barr as "vibrant, vivacious, vital, and full of volcanic tenderness too" – and given the presentation of the tunes here, we'd certainly find it hard to disagree. Kathy's got a great way with a torchy mellow tune, but shines even better on some of the more uptempo numbers – scored nicely by Jerry Fielding with a slightly jazzy undercurrent that really pushes the dynamic edge in Barr's vocals. Titles include "Love Is Here To Stay", "Cuddle Up A Little Closer", "How Long Has This Been Going On", "I'm Just Wild About Harry", "Bye Bye Blackbird", "Day In Day Out", and "Fine & Dandy". Funky rocking sounds from this hip Spanish group – with a bit of a tribal sound that's pretty sweet! The bass is pretty thundering, the drums are strong, and there's some cool piano and flute in the mix that give the cuts a bit of a Latin flourish. Most cuts have vocals, kind of in a rock-sounding mode – but the instrumentation is mostly funky all the way, and the album fits in well next to early 70s records by groups like War or some of their LA cronies. The rare, late 80s gem from Black Rock & Ron – dedicated to and featuring production by the late, great Paul C McKasty – along with some production by Jazzy Jay and Skeff Anselm. You can hear Paul C's influence in the edits, the tightness of the beats and the layering and chopping of the samples, which definitely pushes this set to higher level. The rhymes are impressive, too – especially in the heavier, rawer and harder hitting tracks. Solid duo rap and tight production from the Hollis, Queens crew. ✨✧ David BowieAladdin Sane ... LP
RCA, 1973. Very Good- Gatefold ... $19.99
One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". ✨✧ David BowieHunky Dory ... LP
RCA, 1971. Very Good ... $39.99
Quite possibly David Bowie's first complete moment of genius – an incredibly-formed album that's filled with tunes beyond definition and description! There's still some traces of the earlier madman in the mix, but the overall sound is much more rock-heavy – although not without the fuzzed-up and full-on guitars of Space Oddity or Man Who Sold the World – and often augmented with a bit of strings and softer touches that really bring out the humanity in the songs. The balance here is amazing – as is the fact that a few short years before, Bowie was singing "The Laughing Gnome", but is here one of the most sensitive songwriters of his generation. Tunes are quirky and personal, and titles include "Changes", "Oh You Pretty Things", "Andy Warhol", "Life On Mars", "Kooks", and "Queen Bitch". LP, Vinyl record album

The Thin White Duke turns to the east – and gets a whole new sound with help from Brian Eno! The album is an amazing departure from some of David Bowie's previous work – a set that's sparer, more spacious, and which is often instrumental – quite a statement, given Bowie's reputation as a songwriter at the time! It's almost like Bowie's shaking off all the confused stardom of the previous parts of the 70s – and is stepping forward as a new being from a new space – cleaner, leaner, and simpler than before – but hardly evacuated of soul at all, certainly not as much as you might guess from the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. RCA, 1973. Very Good ... $24.99
A key blend of two chapters in David Bowie's career – his guitar-heavy groove with the Spiders From Mars, and his 60s roots in mod London! The tracks here all date from the mid 60s, and are Bowie's homage to that period in his life – but they're all played with a glammish 70s sensibility, and some definite Ziggy Stardust elements in the way the guitars come into the mix. Given Bowie's rise as a key songwriter of his time, the step back to an album of all covers is a surprising, but genius move – and the execution of the tunes here comes off brilliantly – with plenty of personal spirit that keeps them from being simple rehashes of hits! Tracks include "See Emily Play", "Friday On My Mind", "I Can't Explain", "Everything's Alright", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Shapes Of Things", and "Here Comes The Night". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1980. Near Mint- ... $34.99
David Bowie back in costume at the end of the 70s – but informed enough from his Berlin trilogy that he's coming at things quite differently here! The album's a great summation of the sounds on Low, Heroes, and Lodger – taken almost back to some Ziggy Stardust and Space Oddity territory, but in ways that are a bit leaner, and more focused. Even more impressive, though, is the near-complete absence of other 1980 elements in the set – hardly any influences from punk or new wave, no post-disco dancefloor elements – just deeply unique Bowie all the way through, and proof that he could always find his own space in music when he wanted! Titles include "Up The Hill Backwards", "Teenage Wildlife", "Scream Like A Baby", "Because You're Young", "Scary Monsters", "Ashes to Ashes", "Fashion", and "Kingdom Come". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/Ryko, 1969. Used ... $9.99
An amazing departure for David Bowie – hardly the kind of record you would expect from his oboe-filled tunes of a few years before – and really the start of the groundbreaking, earthshaking, reinventionist era of his genius! There's a spacious, soaring quality to Space Oddity that's every bit the kind of magical music you might hope for in a set recorded at the close of the 60s – a shift into new modes, new sounds that seem to suck up all the best influences in rock from the previous few years, but fuse it into a new cosmic vision for the next decade. And while others might stumble on cliche with the weight of such a task, Bowie pulls it off brilliantly – mixing his fuzzier feelings with some of his more personal leanings – and showcasing a newly deep sense of songwriting here that's really amazing. Some tunes have the sensitivity of work on Hunky Dory, while others burn with the fire of Man Who Sold The World – all in a balance that never sounds schizophrenic at all. Titles include"Space Oddity", "Memory Of A Free Festival", "God Knows I'm Good", "Cygnet Committee", and "Unwashed & Somewhat Slightly Dazed". A brilliant soul album! That's right, we said SOUL album! Bowie was at the height of his Ziggy Stardust fame when this one was recorded – a drastic left-turn in styles, forged during a point in his American tour when he could take a break, head to Philly, plug in at the Sigma Sound Studios, and come up with some fantastic little soul tunes, thanks to help from Luther Vandross! The album sparkles with the best sound of Luther's early work – and you'll hear more than a bit of Luther's work on his own, and his tunes with Gregg Diamond on the set.
