Kenny CarterShowdown – The Complete 1966 RCA Recordings ... CD
RCA/Kent (UK), 1966. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The long-overdue release of the complete RCA recordings of Kenny Carter – a hell of a singer who should have been huge, but who only saw a few tracks issues as singles back in the day! This set corrects that fact, and brings together 22 titles that Kenny recorded for RCA – magnificent music that often rivals the best of the time from Walter Jackson or Jerry Butler – from the rich arrangements provided behind the vocals, to the fantastic reach that Carter brings to the lyrics – mature, expressive, and with a balance between pride, power, and honest emotion that's really stunning. Had Carter gotten to continue in this vein, he would have been instrumental in shaping the role of the male singer in soul music during the 60s – but at least he finally gets his due here, in a stunning set list that includes "I Still Love Her", "You'd Better Get Hip Girl", "Don't Go", "Showdown", "My Love", "Living In The Land Of Heartache", "Round In Circles", "Like A Big Bad Rain", "I Can't Stop Laughing", "Lights Out", "How Can You Say Goodbye", "I'll Know", and "I Believe In You". ExcitersSoul Motion – The Complete Bang, Shout, & RCA Recordings 1966 to 1969 ... CD
Bang/Shout/RCA/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Incredible work by The Exciters – material we totally love to death, most of which is a lot harder-hitting than the group's earlier hits in the 60s! The package pulls together their post-UA recordings for the Bang, Shout, and RCA labels – the first to of which are represented by singles, the last by a full LP and some great extra material from 45s – all of which is really incredible stuff that moves way past any pop soul expectations you may have! Production is by Bert Berns on the non-RCA material, and Larry Banks on the RCA sides – and both producers bring an incredibly hip sound to the recordings, mixing the unique deep soul lead of Brenda Reid with some very groovy backings – arranged by Artie Butler, George Patterson, and Teacho Wiltshire, all of whom bring something unique to the mix. The force of these sides is amazing – almost a revolution in female soul, captured in the history of one group – and the booklet features very full notes on the girls, culled from interviews, and telling the story of their legendary years in the 60s. CD contains all of the legendary Caviar & Chitlins LP, plus lots of singles – 21 tracks that include "Take One Step I'll Take Two", "Soul Motion", "Number One", "A Little Bit Of Soap", "Number One", "You Don't Know What You're Missing", "Blowing Up My Mind", "Movin Too Slow", "Turn Me On", "A Year Ago", "You Got Me", "Always", "Fight That Feelin", "Give It All", and "Weddings Make Me Cry". Carolyn FranklinSister Soul – The Best Of The RCA Years 1969 to 1976 ... CD
RCA/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Massive work from Aretha Franklin's ultra-hip sister – singer Carolyn Franklin, a soul artist that we'd gladly trade for Aretha any time! Carolyn got her start in deep soul modes that were somewhat similar to Aretha's work on Atlantic – but she also worked with production that was a bit looser, freer, and more open to righteous influences than some of her sister's hit-bound sessions – and over the course of 4 albums for RCA she recorded some tremendously hip and funky tunes! This package is one of the first times that Carolyn's material has ever officially made it into the reissue years – and it brings together some of the best cuts from her RCA albums, including work arranged by Horace Ott, Wade Marcus, Bert De Coteaux, and other soul legends. There's a good deal of funk in the mix here – heavy bottoms on the tunes that really make them snap alongside the righteous vocals – and the package is easily one of the hardest-hitting sets of female soul you could ever hope to buy! 22 tracks in all – including "If You Want Me", "There I Go", "Ain't That Groovy", "Boxer", "Reality", "Chain Reaction", "Don't Wake Me Up In The Morning Michael", "Not On The Outside", "Boy I Love You", "You Are Everything", "Shattered Pride", "I Can't Help My Feeling So Blue", "As Long As You Are There", and "You Can Have My Soul". ✨✧ Evelyn Champagne KingEvelyn Champagne King – The RCA Albums 1977 to 1985 (8CD set) ... CD
RCA/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 8CD ... Just Sold Out!
A massive collection of music – eight full albums from Evelyn Champagne King, plus bonus tracks as well! King was a hell of a singer who came along at just the right time – as cool and classy enough to have sung jazz in decades before, but with a richness that also really fit the spirit of 70s soul – and was perfect for the new infusion of grooves that the music got during the disco generation! King could sing disco, but also hit a lot wider range too – which made for some really well-formed records during her years at RCA – all of which are collected here! Unlike some of her crossover contemporaries, Evelyn managed to grow with the years and stay strong as the 80s moved in – shifting styles a bit, but never losing her groove – and working here with production and arrangements from the likes of T Life, Kashif, Willie Lester, Morrie Brown, Andre Cymone, and Leon Sylvers – all of whom help shape the groove. The box features the full albums Smooth Talk, Music Box, Call On Me, I'm In Love, Get Loose, Face To Face, So Romantic, and A Long Time Coming – nearly all of which are presented with bonus tracks – all wrapped up in a box set, with a 40 page booklet of notes. Peggy MarchIf You Loved Me – RCA Recordings From Around The World 1963 to 1969 ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
Peggy March is a singer with a surprisingly varied career – an artist that most folks know for only her early little girl pop fame – but one who went onto record a very unusual range of sounds as the 60s moved on! RCA was her label, and while she never hit the heights of the charts after her early hit, the company was more than committed to allowing Peggy's sound to grow and flourish – especially on the international scene, where she not only recorded tracks in other languages, but also picked up new non-American songs, and served up very cool English-language versions! This set really does a great job of moving past the early stuff, and looking at this lost later legacy of March's music – sounds that we'd easily compare to the hipper 60s material by Jackie DeShannon, even though Peggy didn't write her own material. The range of studio talents really keeps things interesting – there's even one track arranged by Ennio Morricone – and titles include "He's Back Again", "If You Loved Me", "He Couldn't Care Less", "Watch What You Do With My Baby", "Johnny Cool", "Kilindini Docks", "Eh Bravo", "Passo Su Passo", "Too Long Away", "Wasurenaiwa", "Ne Joue Pas Les Enfants", "He Couldn't Care Less", "This Heart Wasn't Made To Kick Around", "Can't Stop Thinkin About Him", and "Fool Fool Fool". Mosaic, Late 40s/1950s/1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stunning overview of these two key slices of work from Louis Armstrong – material recorded for RCA Records in the mid 40s, and then his huge Columbia Records comeback sides in the 50s – the latter of which is presented here with a huge amount of unissued material and alternate tracks! The RCA work starts out the set – 78rpm material that includes both larger groups and small combos – including his All Stars and Hot Seven groups, as well as a 1946 Esquire Award Winners session. Columbia material begins in 1954 – and returns to some key all-star groups with some of Louie's best sidemen of the decade – on sessions supervised by George Avakian and Teo Macero, each of whom bring out a different quality in Armstrong's talents. In addition to all the 78rpm singles and unissued tracks, the sessions also feature material that appeared on the records Louis Armstrong Plays WC Handy, Satch Plays Fats, The Real Ambassadors, Louis Armstrong Plays The Blues, and the unusual Book Of The Month Club album set of Rare & Unreleased performances. The set features a massive 141 tracks in all – and one of the biggest booklets of notes we've ever seen with a Mosaic set! CD
(Includes box and book – and all CDs are still sealed! Hoever, box lid and box edge have a small crease – hence the discount in the price.)

An amazing bit of Brazilian funk – and the best album ever by this exciting soulful duo! The record's their first, and it's got a crackling intensity that you don't always find on their other albums – a groove that mixes hard samba with bass-heavy funk, with a sound that makes them one of the most important forces of the Samba Soul generation! There's lots here to love if you like the heavy grooves of Jorge Ben or Tim Maia – but the duo also have a really great approach of their own – especially in the way they'll trade voices back and forth, over grooves that also have plenty of back/forth action too! The record includes the amazing heavy piano/percussion jammer "Hipnose", plus the great cuts "Voce Abusou", "Kabaluere", "Se Quiser Valer", "Deus O Salve", "Nord West", and "Dalena". CD

The third album from Brian Auger & The Trinity – and the first to feature the group recording without vocals from Julie Driscoll! The sound here is just as soulful as before – a tight take on American soul jazz and funky soul of the 60s – pushed along by Auger's mighty work on the Hammond organ, and featuring (this time around) some male lead vocals, which seem to give the album an even deeper feel than earlier work! Auger's included some great covers of American tunes like "I Want To Take You Higher", "Listen Here", and "Maiden Voyage" – all redone with some great Brit beat group touches – and the album also features a great take on Faure's "Pavane", and Auger's own "Just You Just Me". Chet BakerChet Baker Sings Italian Songs EP ... LP
RCA/Mono Jazz (Italy), 1962. New Copy Gatefold ... $29.99 34.99
A really unique package – one that offers up a full 12" presentation of four tracks that Chet Baker originally released in Italy as 7" singles – very obscure material done at a time when Baker had fled the west coast scene in which he started! The material is equally interesting for the presence of Ennio Morricone – working here a few years before his soundtrack fame, but already a master in the studio – blending light orchestrations and very light voices in a way that still has Baker upfront in the mix throughout – standing unadorned, and a level that's surprisingly powerful, given the Italian language of the songs. Chet's voice is wonderful – more mature than on his 50s sides, and not yet with the broken-down quality of later years – completely sublime on the cuts "Il Mio Domani", "Chetty's Lullaby", "So Che Ti Perdero", and "Motivo Su Raggio Di Luna". Bobby BareEnglish Countryside/Lincoln Park Inn/I Hate Goodbyes/Cowboys & Daddys ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 19.99
Four of the more obscure RCA albums from the great Bobby Bare – all brought together here in a single set! First up is the very unusual English Countryside album – a special set that has the vocals of Bobby Bare paired with a group from the UK – Liverpool's Hillsiders, who sing with a style that's a bit folk, and a bit rock – but which takes on a very distinct country vibe amidst the RCA production of Chet Atkins! Both Bare and The Hillsiders sing solo on the record – but most of the set has them paired together, and the presence of all those voices on the tracks create a nice sense of spontaneity – maybe a hint at the more relaxed recording approach that Bobby would use on his big albums of the mid 70s! Titles include "Sweet Dreams", "Six Days On The Road", "Find Out What's Happening", "Love's Gonna Live Here", "Goin Home", "Blue Is My Lonely Room", and "I Washed My Face In The Mountain Dew". Margie's At The Lincoln Park Inn is a seminal album in the career of Bobby Bare – and the record that really has him turning from a young smiling country singer to the kind of more adult, mature talent that would really send him over the top! The album's promise of "controversial country songs" is certainly apt – as in addition to the great Tom T Hall title cut, the album also features Bare taking on great material from Kris Kristoffersen, Mel Tillis, and even the team of Spooner Oldham and Dan Penn – all set to arrangements that are nicely more sophisticated than those used on the more pop productions of some of Bobby's earlier albums. Titles include "Margie's At The Lincoln Park Inn,", "The Law Is For The Protection Of The People", "Watching The Trains Go By", "Skip A Rope", "Rainy Day In Richmond", "Cincinnati Jail", "Wild As The Wind", and "Drink Up & Go Home". I Hate Goodbyes is the record that marked the return of Bobby Bare to RCA Records in the early 70s – and one that also marks the start of a very different phase in Bare's career! This time around, Bobby's handling the production himself – working with the kind of thoughtful, mature material that would really let him open up – songs from Billy Joe Shaver, Mickey Newbury, the team of Bill Rice and Jerry Foster, and even an early tune from Shel Silverstein – who would soon become one of the biggest contributors to Bobby's records. The vibe is very different than his RCA material of the mid 60s, and in a great way – on titles that include "I Hate Goodbyes", "Restless Wind", "Ride Me Down Easy", "Send Tomorrow To The Moon", "You Know Who", "An Offer She Couldn't Refuse", "What's Your Mama's Name Child", and "Poison Red Berries". Last up is Cowboys & Daddys – an overlooked gem in the mid 70s RCA years of the great Bobby Bare – and a set that really shows the dedication that Bare had during these years to finding the most sophisticated material of the new country generation! The list of songwriters alone is great – as the set features tracks from Terry Allen, Shel Silverstein, David Hickey, and Tom T Hall – plus an early contribution from Bob McDill, with whom Bare would soon record a lot more material on albums to come. There's a mature, laidback vibe to the whole set – different than some of the more playful Bobby Bare albums of the time – and titles include "Chester", "The Cowboy & The Poet", "Amarillo Highway", "Speckled Pony", "Calgary Snow", "Last Dance At The Old Texas Moon", "Pretty Painted Ladies", and "The Stranger". Bobby BareTravelin Bare/Constant Sorrow/Streets Of Baltimore ... CD
RCA/Morello (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A trio of early records from the great Bobby Bare – presented here in one 2CD set! First up is The Travelin Bare – on which the young Bobby Bare hits the road – taking on a whole host of travel-themed tunes on this gem of a record from 1964 – and although the approach is maybe a bit different than Bare's classics of the 70s, that amazing vocal approach can't help but make every song sound great! In other words, what should be a gimmicky set turns out to be a surprisingly strong vehicle for Bobby's talents – which really soar out, even amidst the full productions laid down by Chet Atkins – heartbreaking vocals on tunes that include "Long Way To Tennessee", "Down In Mexico", "Sittin & Thinkin", "Lonely Town", "I Was Coming Home To You", "Long Black Limousine", and "When I'm Gone". Constant Sorrow is an album that's a bit young in the career of Bobby Bare, but which already shows the singer taking on some of the newer, fresher modes that would make him a giant in the 70s – including some inspirations from folk music that really set the album apart from some of RCA's more pop-country material of the time! Bare's got this way of singing that's wonderful right from the start – heartbreaking even when he's sounding strong – and deeply personal, even in a way that some of the more serious folk singers of his generation couldn't hope to touch. Bobby mixes up country and folk tunes here, all with that classic RCA 60s production – on titles that include "Delia's Gone", "Don't Think Twice It's All Right", "Just To Satisfy You", "The Deepening Snow", "Times Are Gettin Hard", "I'm A Man Of Constant Sorrow", and "Countin The Hours Countin The Days". Streets Of Baltimore is a record that gave Bobby Bare one of his first great songs with the famous title track – but which also really opens up with pure greatness all the way through – showing a maturity in Bare's voice that's a real change from his music of a few years before! The album's got one of those RCA formulas to the song selection – most are city-based numbers, set around the US – but the approach also gives Bobby some great tunes to work with, especially the kind of double-edged lyrics that always opened up his sense of wit mixed with melancholy. In addition to the classic reading of "Streets Of Baltimore", other tunes include "Houston", "Memphis Tennessee", "Vincennes", "Cold & Lonely City", and "There Ain't No Fun In This Town". CD

The last album ever recorded by LA vocalist Jesse Belvin – a stupendous session that showed where he might have headed, if not for the tragic auto accident that took his voice from us far too soon! The album has Jesse moving from the smooth R&B of earlier albums into a more sophisticated style that's a bit like that of Nat King Cole, but which is done here with traces of Sam Cooke as well. Orchestrations are by Marty Paich, who's great at both the swinging and mellow tunes – and titles include "Imagination", "I'll Buy You A Star", "Let There Be Love", "Blues In The Night", "It's All Right With Me", and "The Best Is Yet To Come". LP, Vinyl record album

Trad swinging from Connee Boswell – working here outside of her famous group with her sisters, and getting some pretty nice small combo backing from the Original Memphis Five! The overall style hearkens back to a jazz mode a few decades before the late 50s date of the set – and the group recreates the mood nicely with clarinet from leader James Lytell, plus trumpet from Billy Butterfield, trombone from Miff Mole, and piano from Frank Signorelli. Titles include "All Of Me", "Singin The Blues", "Pagan Love Song", "When My Sugar Walks Down The Street", "Make Love To Me", and "My Honey's Loving Arms". LP, Vinyl record album

The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! Oscar Brown's score for a hip play that he wrote (one of his many plays!) – performed by him, Sivuca, and Jean Pace. Despite the "show" quality of the material, this actually stands simply as a great Oscar Brown Jr. LP, and the production is nice and intimate, and sounds just like an ordinary studio album. Sivuca's great, and his breathy voice and playing really open up Oscar Brown with some great Brazilian touches. And as usual, the writing's great, especially on tracks like "Brown Baby", "Mother Africa's Day", "Funky World", and the great version of "Afro Blue", featuring Oscar's classic lyrics. Also features a wonderful version of Johnny Alf's "Sky & Sea" – done by Sivuca with an incredible lilting groove! LP, Vinyl record album

There's some slight traces of RCA production, but in keeping with the title, things are nicely and folksy – very up-close, which makes the vocals even more stunning – on titles that include "My Pretty Quadroon", "Pretty Wildwood Flower", "Columbus Stockade Blues", "John B Sails", "In The Pines", and "Down In The Valley". Hemsey arranged, and there's a gritty vibe to the record that's like some of the best RCA label funk of the time – such as work by the Nite Liters – mixed with some other touches that show Buari's roots on the West African scene – served up in a hybrid that's arguably more successful here than most overseas projects of this nature! Chico Buarque & Ennio MorriconePer Un Pugno Di Samba (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA/Sony (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $38.99 39.99
An amazing record – one that stands as one of Chico Buarque's greatest from the 70s! The set was recorded in Italy in 1970 – and features Chico singing lead vocals over backings handled by Ennio Morricone – all in a style that's a perfect blend of MPB with the best elements of the Italian scene of the time! The songs are all originals written by Chico – and have a light and dreamy samba/bossa feel, one that's inflected by the off-beat orchestral style of Morricone, and supported by vocals from I Cantori Moderni. The feel is halfway between Chico's work on RGE and some of the dreamier Morricone soundtracks of the time – and it's a wonderful thing to have a strong male lead vocal over backings from Morricone – a really rare thing for the time, with results that are tremendous. Titles include "Rotativa", "Samba E Amore", "Nicanor", "Tu Sei Una Di Noi", "In Te", "Ed Ora Dico Sul Serio", and "Quete E Quelle". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary BurtonGenuine Tong Funeral ... LP
RCA, 1968. Very Good+ ... $13.99 16.99
One of the most ambitious projects ever from vibist Gary Burton – an extended piece written by Carla Bley – and billed as "A Dark Opera Without Words"! The work has a feel that's much more fluid than opera, though – and is a great instrumental outing that not only features Gary's vibes at their youthful best, with support from his quartet – but which also includes extra work from Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Gato Barbieri on tenor, and Carla Bley herself on piano. The music is never too far out, but with angular tones and strange time changes that mark the record as being quite different from Gary's other sides for RCA. It also makes the record one of his best, too – as the set has that wonderfully fresh sound that you get from early work by Bley – never too silly, and with a serious approach to composition that also never loses sight of its roots in jazz. Titles include "The New Funeral March", "Silent Spring", "Mother Of The Dead Man", "Death Rolls", and "The New National Anthem". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary ByrdPresenting The Gary Byrd Experience (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Get On Down, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
A wicked lost album of righteous funk and poetic knowledge from the great Gary Byrd! Gary began his life as a soul DJ in New York, but by the early 70s, he was using his rich voice to create recordings designed to educate as much as entertain. That said, the album is as funky as it is strident, and innovatively soulful – it's got raw and heavy drums and horns the burst in, but there's also roomier, slinkier grooves created to frame Byrd's voice and mood. The arrangements are by Chico O'Farrill and he really delivers. Gary Byrd's storytelling and spoken delivery leads the way, though – righteousness without bitterness, angry yet agreeable – truly brilliant and unique work! Titles include "To You Beautiful Black Sister", "If The People Only Knew (Power To The People)", "Shining Black Prince", "Country Preacher", and "How Long My People" and more. This great 2011 CD edition from Get On Down includes the bonus "Soul Travelin' Pt I (The GBE)" and "Soul Travelin' Pt I (The GBE)". CD

Beth Carvalho was one of the leading lights of the new samba generation of the 70s – and this great little album is a good illustration of the lady at her best! Beth can hit a lively groove with the best of them, but also bring a bit more expression to her voice as well – sometimes almost reaching territory of her more sophisticated partners in the MPB generation – but never losing sight of the lightly tripping qualities that make her samba so great! RCA, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
Three-dimensional magic from the great Jimmy Castor – an artist who'd already conquered the worlds of sweet soul, heavy funk, and Latin by the time of this release! Jimmy draws on all his rich background in the soul underground, and also seems to move with a new sort of sophistication, too – not in a way that's slick or commercial, but which shows Jimmy only deepening his ideas in the era of Marvin Gaye and Isaac Hayes – going for some bigger arrangements and ambitious production, while still staying true to his groovy self! There's a vibe to the record that almost reminds us of some of the creative productions that Harvey Fuqua was doing for RCA at the same time – with New Birth and The Nite-Liters – and Jimmy's maestro seems to be Gerald Thomas, who knows how to spin just the right mood for each different track. There's even a few instrumentals, which showcase Castor's great skills on tenor – ala Stanley Turrentine in a similar mode – and tracks include "How Beautiful You Are", "Helpless", "I'm Not A Child Anymore", "The Lone Ranger", "Revelation", "Whiter Shade of Pale", and the tasty "The Last Ole", which is sort of a rumbling sinister slow funk track. One of Nana Caymmi's strongest records from the 70s – an album that allows Nana to sing with that rich, emotive style that she does so well – but in a way that never gets too dark or overdone! That balance is Caymmi's real contribution to the sound of MPB – as, at some level, she brings back that pre-bossa style of expression, but also works in a leaner way that really reflects her family's legacy – especially in the great arrangements from brother Dory Caymmi! The album also features piano by Joao Donato, guitar by Toninho Horta, and guest appearances from Ivan Lins, Novelli, and Nelson Angelo – on titles that include "Dona Olimpia", "Soneto A Mama", "Falam De Mim", "Milagre", "Fingidor", "Cais", and "Meu Menino". A landmark session that gathered together just about every hip British jazz and jazz/rock musician of the time – and brought them together into one super-cool orchestra of sound! Robert Fripp produced the record, and Keith Tippett is the overall music director – but the album's got a feel that's much more in the avant side of the UK jazz spectrum – particularly the trippier side of the Deram/Decca label of the late 60s – like work by Mike Westbrook or Mike Gibbs! The lineup is huge – with Elton Dean and Dudu Pukwana on alto sax, Alan Skidmore and Gary Windo on tenor, Ian Carr and Mongesi Fesa on trumpets, Mark Charig on cornet, Nick Evans and Paul Rutherford on trombone, Keith Tippett on piano, Brian Godding on guitar, Robert Wyatt and John Marshall on drums, and Maggie Nicholls, Julie Tippett, Mike Patto, and Zoot Money on vocals – plus lots of strings as well! Good news galore from the great Sam Cooke – maybe THE album in which he fully shows off his unique contribution to soul music in the 60s – that mix of raw and sweet, easygoing and progressive – a mode that had a huge impact at the time, and went onto become a strong influence for years to come! Key proof of this approach is the landmark track "A Change is Gonna Come" – a slyly righteous track that became a huge Civil Rights anthem and has continued to have social power for many years. And even the more mundane titles have a fresh approach too – like the hit "Another Saturday Night", and a host of other gems that include "Home", "No Second Time", "The Riddle Song", "Good Times", "Meet Me At Mary's Place", and "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day". A classic set of soulful vocals – one in which Sam Cooke sings hits of the 50s (as you'd guess from the title) – but not necessarily his own hits, more a selection of work by other artists – all given a really unique spin by Sam! And while other soul artists occasionally faltered with this sort of crossover project, the set only seems to help Cooke hit new heights – a mature sort of sound that really unlocks the whole power of his amazing voice – one that's got power not just on the soul and gospel fronts, but towards more sophisticated jazz and vocal ends too! Arrangements are by Glenn Osser, and the album's got a sweet approach that makes the tunes sound fresh again – as Sam lends his lovely vocals to tracks that include "Hey There", "Mona Lisa", "You You You", "The Great Pretender", and "Secret Love". Gal Costa gets some great help here from Celso Fonseca – who produced the album, and gives Costa a fresh sound that makes the album one of her best from the 90s! The music's a bit in Fonseca's own mode on his recordings – currents of bossa that bring a classic feel at times, but also modernized a bit in the arrangements, and creative use of contemporary instrumentation – at levels that keep the whole thing from just being a back-to-bossa session! Gal's voice is wonderful – able to turn a line with such subtle power, she grabs us even when we can't understand the lyrics – and the instrumentation is right in there to underscore all the best elements, with the right touches on piano or guitar. Titles include "A Voz Do Tambor", "Imunizacao Racional", "Qui Nem Gilo", "Sertao", "Calling You", "Habib", and "Aguarte Agora". CD

Dando ShaftDando Shaft ... LP
RCA/Trading Places (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 28.99
A self-titled set from Dando Shaft, but actually the group's second album – a set that's as noteworthy for the addition of female singer Polly Bolton as it is for the continued genius of Martin Jenkins! There's a bit more stripped-down style here than the group's first record – almost as if they've mastered their acoustic instruments so well, they can come across with a sound that's wider than you might expect from the lineup – balancing the voices of Bolton and Jenkins to create a really magical sound – and, as with so many of their acid folk contemporaries, coming across with a sound that's complete transcends time throughout. Titles include "Railway", "Riverboat", "Waves Upon The Ether", "Whispering Ned", "Pass It On", "Coming Home To Me", and "Sometimes". LP, Vinyl record album

Dando ShaftLantaloon (with bonus track) ... LP
RCA/Trading Places (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 28.99
Totally wonderful work from one of the most striking groups of the UK acid folk generation – a wonderful combination of acoustic and electric elements, all delivered with a nicely sinister edge! Singer Martin Jenkins is still in the mix here – and his voice has that wonderful edge we always love – balanced by the warmer tones of Polly Bolton, who's really finding her way in the group. Instrumentation mixes guitars with fiddle, mandolin, and some especially nice use of flute and tablas – on titles that include "The Magnetic Beggar/Don't Forget The Animal", "The Black Prince Of Paradise", "The Harp Lady I Bombed", "Melancholic Fervor", "Is It Me", "Road Song", and "It Was Good". Reissue features the bonus track "Spring Clog Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

John DankworthMovies N Me ... LP
RCA, 1974. Near Mint- ... $9.99 11.99
Totally groovy work from John Dankworth – a 70s album that features slightly electrified versions of some of his older film and TV themes! The approach is quite different than the originals at times – with horn passages that are even quirkier, and some cool use of electric piano by Tony Hymas, which really sets the mood of the best tracks. The album's best known for its funky break version of "Modesty Blaise" – made famous by a sample from Del – but the whole thing's pretty great, both if you dig soundtrack work, and if you like the cooler big band styles of the British scene. Titles include "Modesty Blaise", "Long John", "Look Stranger", "Whirly Birly", "Round Table Round", "Herbie Walks Again", "All Gone", and "Morgan". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout notch.)
