✨✧ Eddy ArnoldComplete RCA Victor Christmas Recordings ... CD
RCA/Real Gone, 1960s. New Copy ... $16.99 18.98
Warm sounds for the Holiday season – a double-length set of Christmas tunes, sung by the great Eddy Arnold! Eddy recorded most of these numbers at a time when he was at the height of his countrypolitan talents – able to croon a tune with a smooth, mellow approach that almost made him the Perry Como of the country world – although set up with more of a Nasvhille vibe, thanks to producer Chet Atkins! The match of Atkins and Arnold is one of the all-time greats in mid-century pop – and the duo seem to push themselves even more strongly on this seasonal material. The CD features the full 1961 Christmas album recorded by Eddie, plus loads more Holiday singles – most of which have never been collected before. 26 titles in all – with tracks that include "Christmas Can't Be Far Away", "White Christmas", "Up On The Housetop", "Will Santa Come To Shanty Town", "Jingle Bell Rock", "Christmas", "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day", "Silent Night", "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas", "Winter Wonderland", "The Angel & The Stranger", and "New Year's Greeting". Al Cohn & Zoot SimsFrom A to Z (RCA Masters) ... LP
RCA (France), 1956. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
A twin-tenor classic from the team of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims – one of the duo's best-remembered albums from their 50s years at RCA – and a perfect blend of their talent for individual improvisation and unified ensemble energy! The album boasts 2 different groups – one with Hank Jones on piano, Milt Hinton on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums; the other with Dick Sherman on trumpet, Dave McKenna on piano, and the rhythm team of Hinton and Johnson – but the main focus is on Al and Zoot throughout, both blowing these lines that are crisp and modern, yet filled with soul – especially on Sims' passages, which break free a bit more than some of the other RCA jazz sessions of the time. Titles include "My Blues", "More Bread", "Sherm's Terms", "From A To Z", "Crimea River", and "Mediolistic". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lou ReedRCA & Arista Albums Collection (16CD set) ... CD
Sony, 1970s/1980s. Used 16 CDs ... $109.99
An insanely wonderful legacy in music – almost all of the important solo albums by Lou Reed – packaged here in one fantastically-done deluxe set! The sounds alone are worth the price of admission – music that begins with early post-Velvet Underground material recorded for RCA – with Reed reinventing himself as a gender-twisting poet of the New York scene – to a run of overlooked albums for Arista, where Reed deepened his skills as a songwriter – to an 80s return to RCA, where the singer emerged with a new sort of mature, positive outlook! Lou's a genius at every step of the way – and continues that here with his supervision of all the albums, and this overall package – done before his passing away, and his last legacy on record. Hal Willner also helped put the project together, and contributes beautiful notes to the 80 page hardbound book – which is filled with rare photos, art and other items from Reed's personal collection – and the heavy LP-sized box also features five 8" x 10" prints, and a reproduction of a rare RCA promotional poster. Features the albums Lou Reed, Transformer, Berlin, Rock & Roll Animal, Sally Can't Dance, Metal Machine Music, Coney Island Baby, Rock & Roll Heart, Street Hassle, Take No Prisoners, The Bells, Growing Up In Public, Blue Mask, Legendary Hearts, New Sensations, and Mistrial. CD
(Includes all the extras! Box has some very light wear, but is pretty great overall. One sleeve, the 2LP live album, has a very small rip – but overall the set is in wonderful shape.)

Charlie RichToo Many Teardrops – The Complete Groove & RCA Recordings ... CD
RCA/Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 22.99
A great look at a really lost legacy in music from Charlie Rich – obscure sides recorded for RCA Records in the early 60s – done after his initial rush of genius on Sun Records, and before his later commercial success on Epic! Charlie's got one of the all-time great voices in pop music – a richness that easily rivals that of Memphis contemporary Elvis Presley, and which never fully got its due at the time – even though labels like RCA and Smash provided Rich with some fantastic material and production! Charlie's work for Smash has been picked up by the cognoscenti in recent years, and we'd honestly put these RCA tracks right up alongside them – with a similar Tennessee blend of soul and rock, rural and urban – all delivered by Charlie's incredibly charming vocal approach, and recorded with a depth that goes way beyond the usual RCA production modes of the time. There's plenty of currents of soul in the mix – even some New York-styled modes, which really work well with Rich – and this 40 track set is the first time this material has ever been pulled together – long-overdue, and a real treat to our ears! Titles include "Like Someone In Love", "Lady Love", "Nice & Easy", "Big Boss Man", "It's All Over Now", "The Grass Is Always Greener", "Now Everybody Knows", "My Mountain Dew", "The Big Build Up", "She Called Me Baby", "Gentleman Jim", "Christmas Greetings", "All Of My Friends Are Gonna Be Strangers", "Is Goodbye That Easy To Say", "Tragedy", "Ten Dollars & A Clean White Shirt", "Tomorrow Night", and "No Room To Dance". George RussellEzz-Thetic (RCA) ... LP
RCA, 1956. Very Good- Gatefold ... $7.99
French reissue of a nice little set from Russell – not to be confused with the Riverside LP with a similar title. Not as arch-modern as some of his later work, with strong playing in kind of that east coast chamber jazz mode that you'd find in some of the other RCA sides of the time. Players include Art Farmer, Hal McKusick, Bill Evans, Barry Galbraith, and Joe Harris – and the tracks are mostly originals, written with slight touches of whimsy, but less of the indulgence on that front as you'd hear on west coast material. Titles include "Witch Hunt", "The Sad Sargeant", "Ballad Of Hix Blewitt", "Knights of The Steamtable", "Jack's Blues", and "Night Sound". LP, Vinyl record album

ZulemaJust Can't Say Goodbye – The Best Of The RCA Years ... CD
RCA/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
A killer overview of the RCA years of Zulema Cusseaux – a heck of a great singer, and one who worked with some excellent styles during her 70s years in soul! Zulema's got a slightly righteous approach to her music – a style schooled in the deep soul of her Floria roots, but focused on some tighter, groovier charts here – thanks to top-shelf work from studio talents like Bert DeCoteaux, Leon Pendarvis, and Van McCoy – all of whom bring a really special sort of magic to these sides! Zulema's got the kind of voice that might have faltered if given the wrong direction – but here, it really takes off – especially given the excellent choices in the collection, which nicely avoids some of the few mis-steps on Zulema's fuller albums. 19 tracks in all – including "Standing In The Back Row Of Your Heart", "I Love You Baby", "Pity For The Children", "You Had To Know", "Half Of Your Heart", "It Will Never Be The Same Again", "Why Did It Have To End This Way", and "Love To Last Forever". ✨✧ Ames BrothersThere'll Always Be A Christmas (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Real Gone, 1957. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
The groovy harmony vocals of The Ames Brothers are a perfect fit for this Holiday classic from RCA – a record that features great orchestrations from Sid Ramin, the same arranger who worked with the group on their Destination Moon album! This set's maybe a bit more down to earth, but still has that nice punch that Ramin can bring to the music – and even when mellow, the Ames' still find a way to make the music their own – turning in a group harmony Christmas album years before the Swingle Singers or Beach Boys. Titles include "Santa Claus Is Comin To Down", "Christmas", "Go Tell it On The Mountain", "Jingle Bells", "The Christmas Song", "Deck The Halls", and "What Child Is This". CD features the original mono mix – and bonus tracks "I Got A Cold For Christmas" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm". CD

A pretty darn cool record – almost an audio cartoon, of sorts, as Jim Backus talks his way through some Mister Magoo routines, with musical backings by Dennis Farnon. The record's actually more entertaining than most of the Magoo cartoons – as the use of voice and music is pretty dynamic, very much in keeping with the RCA hi-fi standards of the time. Chet Baker SextetChet Is Back! ... LP
RCA, 1962. Sealed ... $19.99
One of Chet Baker's rarest albums – and a great one! The session was recorded in Rome in 1962, at a time when Chet's star had fallen quite a bit on the American scene, and it features him working with some of the hippest European players at the time – like Rene Thomas on guitar, Bobby Jaspar on tenor and flute, Amadeo Tomassi on piano, and Daniel Humair on drums. The tracks are longer than those on some of Chet's earlier albums – with an angularity that brings out new modes of blowing on some of his solos. Titles include "Blues In The Closet", "Barbados", "Star Eyes", "Pent Up House", and "Ballata In Forma Di Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby BareAll American Boy (4CD set) ... CD
RCA/Bear Family (Germany), Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... $92.99 129.99
The great start of the legendary Bobby Bare – a singer who'd move onto rich new territory in the 70s, but who was also pretty darn fantastic in his early years too! Bobby's a hell of a singer – and here, he makes some real magic with songs that run the gamut – in a package that features some very obscure early work for Capitol, Challenge, and Fraternity Records – singles that most folks don't know about at all – before then moving into all the early RCA Records material that really helped put Bobby on the map in the mid 60s! The whole thing's done in the usual strong Bear Family style – and in addition to hits like "500 Miles Away From Home", "Detroit City", and "Miller's Cave" – the package also includes lots of obscure album cuts that are long out of print, and even some unusual German recordings too. RCA, 1966. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A lesser-known swinger on the RCA label from the 60s – a vocalist who hearkens back to the imprint's female sessions of the 50s, but who brings in some groovier touches as well! Backings are by Marion Evans, who helps Susan's full vocals find some nice spaces in the tunes – sometimes bold and dynamic, like Marion Montgomery – other times a bit more warm and flowing up from the bottom, in the mode of some of the more mature 60s jazz singers. There's a great hint of sadness on most numbers – and titles include "My Man", "Walking Happy", "The Carnival Is Closed Today", "Bewitched", "Mas Que Nada", "It Had To Be You", and "You'd Better Love Me". RCA/FTG, 1981. Used ... $8.99
The great first album from Beggar & Co – a sweet UK soul trio from the early 80s, and one who grew from the ashes of the equally great Light Of The World! The style here is similar to LOTW's variation on American funk of the time – particularly the tight blend of jazz and funk they shared with Earth Wind & Fire and Kool & The Gang – but as a trio, the sound here is leaner, too – more focused on the rhythms, with a snapping, catchy sound that's mighty nice – and which makes for great music all the way through! There's still plenty of live instrumentation and a very warm feel throughout – no tinny 80s modes here – and titles include "Break It Up", "You Need Love", "Bahia De Palma", "I Tried To Write A Song", "Keep On Running", "That's Life", and "Laughing On". A record that has some of the more modern echoes of Milt Bernhart's work with Stan Kenton, but which also shows the warmer sound of his horn too – making for a nice interplay between modes that goes deeper than the usual RCA set from the time. David BowieAladdin Sane ... LP
RCA, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". David BowieDiamond Dogs ... LP
RCA, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
David Bowie at his most sinister for the 70s – a landmark set that combines the harder rocking sound of the Ziggy Stardust years with the more sophisticated theatrics of Aladdin Sane – in a style that features some of the darkest, most political work of Bowie's career! There's a depth to the record that goes way beyond the silly, sensational cover image – and there's also a sonic complexity that's wonderful too – a songs slide into each other with a deftness that never fails to amaze us! The album grew out of a failed project based around George Orwell's famous book 1984 – but the rights to that story were denied by the family – so Bowie went in his own directly, and honestly came up with work that was far better than if he'd done any sort of slavish reading of the novel (Rick Wakeman famously failed in that territory – and the Eurhythmics fared just slightly better.) The whole thing's great, and titles include "Diamond Dogs", "1984", "Sweet Thing", "Candidate", "Rebel Rebel", and "Big Brother". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
One of the three great collaborations between David Bowie and Brian Eno – and possibly the ultimate statement from his years in Berlin! The album's got some tunes that still show some of the guitar power of the early 70s Bowie – but it's also got some of the beautiful spacier moments brought forward on Low – and which are every bit the Brian Eno of Another Green World. The balance is beautiful – stark and dark on one half, then airy and spacious on the next – handled without any sense of gimmickry, and a bold mainstream experiment that still resonates strongly today. Titles include "Beauty & The Beast", "Joe The Lion", "Heroes", "Sons Of The Silent Age", "Blackout", "V-2 Schneider", "Sense Of Doubt", "Moss Garden", "Neukoln", and "The Secret Life Of Arabia". The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! The Thin White Duke turns to the east – and gets a whole new sound with help from Brian Eno! The album is an amazing departure from some of David Bowie's previous work – a set that's sparer, more spacious, and which is often instrumental – quite a statement, given Bowie's reputation as a songwriter at the time! It's almost like Bowie's shaking off all the confused stardom of the previous parts of the 70s – and is stepping forward as a new being from a new space – cleaner, leaner, and simpler than before – but hardly evacuated of soul at all, certainly not as much as you might guess from the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. RCA, 1976. Very Good- ... $19.99
The second half of Bowie's Thin White Duke years in the studio – a record that's more cool and condense than his Young American album – but equally sublime in its own sort of way! The format here is much more compact – with a small group working alongside Bowie, still with some currents of Philly soul – but also some of the darker tones that would come to the forefront during the Berlin years after this album's release – a mode that's maybe hinted at by the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. A few tracks are long, and build up beautifully – showing a new sort of subtlety from Bowie – and titles include the classic "Station To Station", plus "Golden Years", "Word On A Wing", "TVC 15", "Stay", and "Wild Is The Wind". The first album ever from The Brotherhood – an offshoot of Paul Revere & The Raiders, filled with some of that group's greatest early players! The core of the group features Drake Levin on guitar, Phil Volk on bass, and Mike Smith on drums – romping with the kind of raw, party-styled energy they brought to their work with their previous group – but at a level here that's way more heady, and definitely shows a stronger influence from psych! Tunes are still plenty catchy, but have some weird undercurrents too – in a cool Sunshine Pop sort of style – and the range of instrumentation is nicely fresh, and even a bit richer than usual for this sort of record. An even tighter set than the first album from The Brotherhood – and one that has the group really finding a way to tap into their older garagey roots, while still keeping plenty of fuzz and psych intact! The drums are great – that powerful punch that Mike Smitty Smith always brought to his earlier pop work – but the themes are moodier, and the guitar nicely trippy, while still staying tight – sometimes with a bit more strut than we ever would have expected from these guys. BrothersDon't Stop Now ... LP
RCA, 1976. Very Good- ... $6.99
Great stuff – and the kind of group that would be easy to overlook if the tracks weren't so good! The Brothers were clearly some sort of a studio project designed to cash in on the disco craze – and they included Bhen Lanzaroni on keyboards, who'd also recorded a bit on his own as a studio player. The record's not hard-hitting funk, but it does have a smooth instrumental disco sound that's got a lot of nice jazzy touches, and which never lapses into the cliches you'd expect. The band were hip enough to cover Antonio Carlos & Jocafi's classic Brazilian groover "Voce Abousou", done here with vocals on the chorus only – and they come up with some nice numbers on their own, like "Make Love", "Brothers Theme", "Don't Stop Now", and "Under The Skin". Oscar Brown's score for a hip play that he wrote (one of his many plays!) – performed by him, Sivuca, and Jean Pace. Despite the "show" quality of the material, this actually stands simply as a great Oscar Brown Jr. LP, and the production is nice and intimate, and sounds just like an ordinary studio album. Sivuca's great, and his breathy voice and playing really open up Oscar Brown with some great Brazilian touches. And as usual, the writing's great, especially on tracks like "Brown Baby", "Mother Africa's Day", "Funky World", and the great version of "Afro Blue", featuring Oscar's classic lyrics. Also features a wonderful version of Johnny Alf's "Sky & Sea" – done by Sivuca with an incredible lilting groove! LP, Vinyl record album

Burke's hitting a rare space that we'd only allow to a few – like Leroy Hutson or Webster Lewis. Keni's come a long long way from the 5 Stairsteps by this point – and he's never sounded so great! A really incredible record from the great Gary Burton – a key 60s set that definitely has him finding a musical voice that's all his own – a way of using the vibes that nobody else had ever attempted before! The instrument is a flurry of chromatic beauty – tones and light exploding at each new twist and turn – mixed here with superb work from a quartet that includes Larry Coryell on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums! The names of the players alone might be enough to give you a picture of the sound – but let us go onto say that the overall approach is amazing – angular, jagged, and more rhythmic than melodic – but equally swinging, in sort of a modal way. RCA, 1968. Near Mint- ... $14.99
One of the most ambitious projects ever from vibist Gary Burton – an extended piece written by Carla Bley – and billed as "A Dark Opera Without Words"! The work has a feel that's much more fluid than opera, though – and is a great instrumental outing that not only features Gary's vibes at their youthful best, with support from his quartet – but which also includes extra work from Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Gato Barbieri on tenor, and Carla Bley herself on piano. The music is never too far out, but with angular tones and strange time changes that mark the record as being quite different from Gary's other sides for RCA. It also makes the record one of his best, too – as the set has that wonderfully fresh sound that you get from early work by Bley – never too silly, and with a serious approach to composition that also never loses sight of its roots in jazz. Titles include "The New Funeral March", "Silent Spring", "Mother Of The Dead Man", "Death Rolls", and "The New National Anthem". LP, Vinyl record album

Hardly the kind of country roads you'd find traveled by other musicians – as Gary Burton's sound here is incredibly fresh – still as groundbreaking now as it was back in the 60s! The title might be a reference to Burton's Nashville roots, and the music does have a slightly pastoral vibe – but the overall execution is extremely modern, and filled with the kind of bold tones and sharp turns that always made Burton so wonderful at the start! The first-ever album from vibist Gary Burton – a very young player at the time of recording, but one who's definitely worth the "new vibe man" promised in the title! The style here is maybe a bit more conventionally swinging than some of Burton's records from later years – a trio setting with Gene Cherico on bass and the great Joe Morello on drums – but both rhythm players are already pretty hip with their timings, and really push Burton into spacious, chromatic territory that's completely sublime – a sound that already marks the musician as really bringing something fresh to his instrument. Rare work from the team of Gigi Gryce and Donald Byrd – material recorded during their Jazz Lab sessions for Columbia Records in the 50s, but unissued at the time! The duo are pure genius together – able to open up with all the modern jazz currents that altoist Gryce was bringing to his writing and arranging, yet still swing with all the sense of soul that you'd know from later work from the famous trumpeter Byrd! The blend is great – kind of like all the best 50s modern jazz ideas rolled into one – a record with plenty of new ideas, but a rock-solid swing to match the best on Blue Note or Prestige – driven strongly by the rhythm trio of Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Gryce is especially nice – maybe a bit more biting than on some of his earlier records with Art Farmer, and a hell of a soloist throughout.
