Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersBest Of The Columbia & RCA/Vik Years 1956 to 1959 ... CD
Sony/Real Gone, Late 50s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 19.99
A nice collection of overlooked work from Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – not the oft-reissued material from the group's years at Blue Note, but instead some slightly more obscure sides recorded for Columbia and RCA! The work here also represents a time when Blakey was experimenting a bit more with the group – a stretch right before he settled into some of the more-recorded groups with Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, and Bobby Timmons – but still had a great ear for important younger talent! Players here include Bill Hardman, Donald Byrd, and Lee Morgan on trumpets; Jackie McLean on alto; Johnny Griffin, Hank Mobley, and Benny Golson on tenor; and Horace Silver and Sam Dockery on piano! The set includes material from the albums Hard Bop, Drum Suite, Jazz Messengers, Night In Tunisia, and some of the French-only live recordings that Blakey did for RCA in the late 50s – and the set features 16 tracks that include "Nica's Dream", "Evidence", "Blues March For Europe No 1", "Along Came Manon", "Lester Left Town", "Night In Tunisia (live)", "Moanin With Hazel", "Night In Tunisia (take 3)", "Ecaroh", "Cubano Chant", "Almost Like Being In Love", "The Sacrifie", and "Couldn't It Be You (take 4)". ✨✧ ExcitersSoul Motion – The Complete Bang, Shout, & RCA Recordings 1966 to 1969 ... CD
Bang/Shout/RCA/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Incredible work by The Exciters – material we totally love to death, most of which is a lot harder-hitting than the group's earlier hits in the 60s! The package pulls together their post-UA recordings for the Bang, Shout, and RCA labels – the first to of which are represented by singles, the last by a full LP and some great extra material from 45s – all of which is really incredible stuff that moves way past any pop soul expectations you may have! Production is by Bert Berns on the non-RCA material, and Larry Banks on the RCA sides – and both producers bring an incredibly hip sound to the recordings, mixing the unique deep soul lead of Brenda Reid with some very groovy backings – arranged by Artie Butler, George Patterson, and Teacho Wiltshire, all of whom bring something unique to the mix. The force of these sides is amazing – almost a revolution in female soul, captured in the history of one group – and the booklet features very full notes on the girls, culled from interviews, and telling the story of their legendary years in the 60s. CD contains all of the legendary Caviar & Chitlins LP, plus lots of singles – 21 tracks that include "Take One Step I'll Take Two", "Soul Motion", "Number One", "A Little Bit Of Soap", "Number One", "You Don't Know What You're Missing", "Blowing Up My Mind", "Movin Too Slow", "Turn Me On", "A Year Ago", "You Got Me", "Always", "Fight That Feelin", "Give It All", and "Weddings Make Me Cry". Johnny Griffith IncGrand Central Shuttle/My Love (RCA) ... 7-inch
RCA, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Funky work from this excellent Detroit keyboardist! "Grand Central" is a humming instrumental – one that begins with raw guitar licks and hi-hats, plucking out the groove before more guitar scratches on in, and Johnny comes over the top on some hard piano lines. Wah wah gets into the mix – and there's a funky breakdown that's right off a Lalo Schifrin 70s soundtrack. Very nice! The flip's a ballad – in case you were wondering – and pretty sleepy at that. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Toshiko AkiyoshiKogun (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $18.99
Brilliantly bold work from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi – an artist who's really coming into her own for the 70s – stepping out in a big band format that would win her a wide new audience on both sides of the Pacific! The album's one of the first to feature the ensemble co-led with husband Lew Tabackin – a group that features strong work from American players who include Dick Spencer and Gary Foster on alto saxes, Tabackin and Tom Peterson on tenor, Bill Perkins on baritone, Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets, and Charles Loper and Jim Sawyer on trombones. The horns are only part of the picture, though – as the inventive writing and arranging from Akiyoshi is what really makes the album great – a strong sense of painting with sound, while still keeping things swinging – really unlocking all the best elements that had been opened up for larger ensembles in the previous few years. The set features all original tracks that include "Kogun", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Elegy", and "Memory". CD
(Blu-spec CD 2 pressing!)

Toshiko AkiyoshiTen Gallon Shuffle (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Baystate/RCA (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $24.99
A hokey title and cover, but a great little record – a lesser-known gem from the Toshiko Akioshi big band, recorded in the mid 80s for Japanese release! Toshiko's still working strongly with reedman Lew Tabackin here – and as always, the sound of the reeds really make the record – not only on the bold ensemble passages, but also on the snakey, well-crafted solos that slide out of the fuller arrangements – letting Lew, Frank Wess, and Jim Snidero contribute some really great work on the longer tracks. Titles include "Ten Gallon Shuffle", "Fading Beauty", "Blue Dream", and "Happy Hoofer" – and in case you're wondering, that's a young Monday Michiru on the cover! CD

Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandFrom Toshiko With Love (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the lesser-known albums in the great run of big band records cut by pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and reedman Lew Tabackin – and a set with a bit of a difference, too – as this time out, Tabackin wrote all the tunes, although Toshiko still handles all the arrangements and orchestrations! Some of the numbers are a bit shorter than on some of the other TALT group recordings – and it might be our imagination, but they also seem to have some more pronounced reed solos – moments that really remind us what a great saxophonist Tabackin can be, and a master of the powerful, yet understated emotional moment. Titles include "Tanuki's Night Out", "Falling Petal", "Yet Another Tear", and "A Bit Byas'd". CD
(Blu-spec CD 2 pressing!)

RCA (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $18.99
A 70s classic from the team of Toshiko Akioshi and Lew Tabackin – a duo who did for the jazz ensemble mode in their generation what Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland did in the 60s! The material here is wonderfully inventive – the kind of compositions that Toshiko wouldn't have even written in her smaller combo years – fleshed out here by a fantastic group that includes Lew Tabackin and Gary Foster on reeds, and Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets – all in a setting where the voices of the individual members really get a lot of space to shine! Titles include "Since Perry", "Opus No Zero", "Long Yellow Road", "First Night", "Children In The Temple Ground", and "Yet Another Tear". CD

Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandMarch Of The Tadpoles (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $18.99
It's hard to get at the brilliance of the 70s albums from Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin in words – but we'll try just a bit! The records are almost an anomaly – creative big band records at a time when most folks were leaving the format behind – put together by a duo who weren't really stars in the years before, at least on the American market – but who really found a way to shine in this new setting! Toshiko composed and arranged all the material – opening up a whole new depth in her songwriting – and she also delivers superb piano solos that have the dexterity of her earlier work, but also a new level of complexity too. Tabackin is wonderful as well – fantastic on flute and tenor – and also providing strong inspiration to reed soloists Dick Spencer and Gary Foster too. Emil Richards does a nice percussion solo on one track – and titles include "Notorious Tourist From East", "Deracinated Flower", "Yellow Is Mellow", and "Mobile". CD

Hard-swinging big band material – with a heavy emphasis on drums! The album is a suite of six tracks – all written by either Manny Albam or Ernie Wilkins, both of whom arrange the groups on the set – really letting them open up nicely on the album's longish tracks. Manny and Ernie were two of the more soulful arrangers of their day – and they get some strong performances out of the groups, letting players like Conte Candoli on trumpet, Hal McKusick on alto, Al Cohn on tenor, and Freddie Green on guitar open up in longer tracks driven to intensity by some great drum work handled by the lesser-known (but excellent) Ted Sommer. Titles include "Skinning The Valves", "Dancers On Drums", "Bristling", and "The Octopus". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1957. Very Good ... $4.99
Early American work from Julie Andrews – recorded right at the start of her big fame on the stage, but with styles that almost hearken back more to the sound of her homeland! Many titles have musical elements or themes that echo the British Isles – a few traditional folk tunes here, or more sentimental styles there – all arranged by Irwin Kostal in ways that are not as swinging or bold as some of her more dynamic Broadway material. There's a sense of subtlety to some of the tunes, and a bit of sadness too – and titles on the set include "Canterbury Fair", "To A Wild Rose", "Where'er You Walk", "These Precious Things", "The Floral Dance", and "London Pride". RCA/Real Gone, Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $20.99 22.99
A fantastic collection of work from those years when singer Ann-Margret first popped up on the American market – young, fresh, and sexy – and willing to do whatever it took to make her music stand out from the pack! Ann-Margret's got a vocal range that's maybe deeper than most of her contemporaries – a lusty growl that makes you feel like she's singing from way down in her toes – with odd bluesy currents mixed with jazzier backings – all in a mode that has really blows away the sultry tones of previous singers like Peggy Lee or Julie London. This 30 track package is a very well-chosen array of tunes from the early RCA years – and includes lots of solo numbers, plus work with Elvis Presley and Al Hirt – on titles that include "Man's Favorite Sport", "Next Time", "Madrid/The Pleasure Seekers", "Mack The Knife", "My Baby Just Cares For Me", "Teach Me Tonight", "The Lady Loves Me", "You're The Boss", "Mr Wonderful", "That Old Black Magic", "Everything Makes Music When You're In Love", "Let Me Entertain You", "Take All The Kisses", "Something To Think About", and "Mister Kiss Kiss Bang Bang". The record's their first, and it's got a crackling intensity that you don't always find on their other albums – a groove that mixes hard samba with bass-heavy funk, with a sound that makes them one of the most important forces of the Samba Soul generation! There's lots here to love if you like the heavy grooves of Jorge Ben or Tim Maia – but the duo also have a really great approach of their own – especially in the way they'll trade voices back and forth, over grooves that also have plenty of back/forth action too! Burt BacharachTogether? ... LP
RCA, 1979. Very Good+ ... $5.99
A lost Burt Bacharach treasure – a bit later than classic vintage, but a wonderful album from the mature maestro – and sometimes overlooked, due to its status as a soundtrack! The work here is totally great – that mellow, easy-flowing style that Burt really perfected around the time of Living Together – served up here in a batch of sweet instrumental tracks, plus a few key vocal numbers with lyrics sung by Jackie DeShannon, Libby Titus, and Michael McDonald – all of whom slide down more into the Bacharach ethos than stand out as their usual selves – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "I Don't Need You Any More", "In Tune", "If We Ever Get Out Of Here", "On The Beach", "I've Got My Mind Made Up", "Find Love", "Luisa", and "I Think I'm Gonna Fall In Love". Kathy, we'd follow you anywhere – not just for your sultry look on the cover of this album, but for your warm and wonderful vocals throughout the set! The notes describe Barr as "vibrant, vivacious, vital, and full of volcanic tenderness too" – and given the presentation of the tunes here, we'd certainly find it hard to disagree. Kathy's got a great way with a torchy mellow tune, but shines even better on some of the more uptempo numbers – scored nicely by Jerry Fielding with a slightly jazzy undercurrent that really pushes the dynamic edge in Barr's vocals. Elmer Bernstein/Vikki CarrSilencers ... LP
RCA, 1966. Very Good ... $4.99
The groovy groovy soundtrack to the first Matt Helm film – starring Dean Martin as a 60s master of intrigue! Elmer Bernstein handled the soundtrack with a really great approach – jazz, swinging, and with plenty of mod 60s bits – very much in some of the same territory as Lalo Schifrin or Hugo Montenegro at the time! And equally great, the record also includes a few great vocal tracks by Vikki Carr – "The Silencers" and "Santiago" – both of which are very groovy numbers that swing with a wonderfully cheesy sort of sound! Other tracks are instrumentals, and titles include include "Tun Tzee", "Tina's Waltz", "Matt Helm's Blues", and "Early To Bed". LP, Vinyl record album

Black Rock & RonStop The World ... CD
RCA/Get On Down, 1989. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
The rare, late 80s gem from Black Rock & Ron – dedicated to and featuring production by the late, great Paul C McKasty – along with some production by Jazzy Jay and Skeff Anselm. You can hear Paul C's influence in the edits, the tightness of the beats and the layering and chopping of the samples, which definitely pushes this set to higher level. The rhymes are impressive, too – especially in the heavier, rawer and harder hitting tracks. Solid duo rap and tight production from the Hollis, Queens crew. Titles include 'You Can't Do Me None", "Black Is The Word", "That's How I'm Livin'", "Getting Large", "I'm Tired", "3 Brothers And Yvonne", "Rap Life", "Act Like You Know" and "Black, Rock & Ron (video mix)". 15 tracks in all. RCA, 1981. Near Mint- ... $7.99
"I'm a rock n' roll puppet, in a band called Bow Wow Wow." What a weird, defiantly appealing moment in pop music it was when Malcolm McClaren assembled members of The Ants and 15-year-old Annabella Lwin – who then paired bratty lyrics with African-inspired drums & rhythms. What should have been an affront to good taste (you can legitimately argue that it it was) just sounds like a bunch of thumping, boisterous fun to us. David BowieChristiane F – Original Soundtrack ... LP
RCA, Late 70s. Very Good- ... $8.99
Less of a full-on soundtrack by Bowie than a collection of work from some of his best albums of the mid and late 70s – pulled together to provide a musical backdrop for the film Christiane F! The versions here are supposedly alternate ones, but we're thinking that's just hype – because they sound pretty darn close to the album versions. But that's ok with us, because the tunes are all great – well-chosen work pulled from the incredible stretch that includes Bowie's legendary Berlin trilogy. Titles include "TVC 15", "Heroes", "Boys Keep Swinging", "Sense Of Doubt", "Station To Station", "Warsawza", "Stay", and "V2 Schneider". LP, Vinyl record album

David BowieHunky Dory ... LP
RCA, 1971. Very Good ... $49.99
Quite possibly David Bowie's first complete moment of genius – an incredibly-formed album that's filled with tunes beyond definition and description! There's still some traces of the earlier madman in the mix, but the overall sound is much more rock-heavy – although not without the fuzzed-up and full-on guitars of Space Oddity or Man Who Sold the World – and often augmented with a bit of strings and softer touches that really bring out the humanity in the songs. The balance here is amazing – as is the fact that a few short years before, Bowie was singing "The Laughing Gnome", but is here one of the most sensitive songwriters of his generation. Tunes are quirky and personal, and titles include "Changes", "Oh You Pretty Things", "Andy Warhol", "Life On Mars", "Kooks", and "Queen Bitch". LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label pressing with 1S/1S matrix including the lyric sleeve. Cover has some edge wear and a name in pen on the back.)

David BowieLodger (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Ryko, 1979. Used ... $6.99
The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! Titles include "Red Sails", "Look Back In Anger", "Repetition", "Boys Keep Swinging", "Red Money", "Yassassin", and "DJ". Includes the bonus tracks "I Pray Ole" and "Look Back In Anger (1988 version)". CD

David BowieLow (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
The Thin White Duke turns to the east – and gets a whole new sound with help from Brian Eno! The album is an amazing departure from some of David Bowie's previous work – a set that's sparer, more spacious, and which is often instrumental – quite a statement, given Bowie's reputation as a songwriter at the time! It's almost like Bowie's shaking off all the confused stardom of the previous parts of the 70s – and is stepping forward as a new being from a new space – cleaner, leaner, and simpler than before – but hardly evacuated of soul at all, certainly not as much as you might guess from the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. Titles include "Speed Of Life", "Be My Wife", "A New Career In A New Town", "Warsawza", "Art Decade", "Weeping Wall", and "Sound & Vision". LP, Vinyl record album

David BowieSpace Oddity (picture disc) ... LP
RCA, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
An amazing departure for David Bowie – hardly the kind of record you would expect from his oboe-filled tunes of a few years before – and really the start of the groundbreaking, earthshaking, reinventionist era of his genius! There's a spacious, soaring quality to Space Oddity that's every bit the kind of magical music you might hope for in a set recorded at the close of the 60s – a shift into new modes, new sounds that seem to suck up all the best influences in rock from the previous few years, but fuse it into a new cosmic vision for the next decade. And while others might stumble on cliche with the weight of such a task, Bowie pulls it off brilliantly – mixing his fuzzier feelings with some of his more personal leanings – and showcasing a newly deep sense of songwriting here that's really amazing. Some tunes have the sensitivity of work on Hunky Dory, while others burn with the fire of Man Who Sold The World – all in a balance that never sounds schizophrenic at all. Titles include"Space Oddity", "Memory Of A Free Festival", "God Knows I'm Good", "Cygnet Committee", and "Unwashed & Somewhat Slightly Dazed". LP, Vinyl record album

David BowieStation To Station (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA/Parlophone, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
The second half of Bowie's Thin White Duke years in the studio – a record that's more cool and condense than his Young American album – but equally sublime in its own sort of way! The format here is much more compact – with a small group working alongside Bowie, still with some currents of Philly soul – but also some of the darker tones that would come to the forefront during the Berlin years after this album's release – a mode that's maybe hinted at by the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. A few tracks are long, and build up beautifully – showing a new sort of subtlety from Bowie – and titles include the classic "Station To Station", plus "Golden Years", "Word On A Wing", "TVC 15", "Stay", and "Wild Is The Wind".
