Paul Desmond with Jim HallComplete RCA Victor Recordings (5CD set) ... CD
RCA/Victor, Early/Mid 60s. Used 5 CDs ... $48.99
Genius in one of its purest forms! Paul Desmond's alto sax was honed to perfection by the time of these recordings – worked out through fame in the Dave Brubeck Quartet years of the late 50s and early 60s, but also relaxed in a confidence that makes these sides completely majestic, and utterly fantastic! Desmond's tone and approach are languid – but in a way that's incredibly compelling: notes just floating out of the horn, almost effortlessly, seeming not to come from Desmond himself, but to him, gathered together by his warmth and good wit, honed in further by the spare and gentle guitar work of the great Jim Hall. This package is the finest tribute we could think of to their brilliant work together – a wonderfully-done 5CD set, with a lovely slipcase and book, done in a way that retains the structure of the original albums, yet also adds in bonus tracks. There's a whopping 55 cuts in all – and every single one of them's a gem! CD

Faith Hope & CharityFaith Hope & Charity (RCA) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Soulmusic.com, 1975. Used ... $11.99
Sweet 70s soul from Faith Hope & Charity – a trio who had recorded previously, but who really burst out here at the start of the disco years with some strong studio help from the great Van McCoy! The style of the record isn't really disco, but isn't far off either – as McCoy mixes lively rhythms and soaring strings with the vocal interplay of the trio – who come off much more as a well-formed soul group than some of the other trios of the generation – who were often just doing chorus vocals for the grooves! Singer Brenda Hillard really soars at times – with a lead that sets fire to the tracks nicely – and titles include the classic "Find a Way", plus "Just One Look", "Disco Dan", "Rescue Me", "Little Bit Of Love", "Don't Go Looking For Love", and "To Each His Own". CD features bonus single mixes of "Find a Way", "Don't Go Looking For Love", and "To Each His Own". CD

Jon LucienBelieve In Me – The Essential Selection – Original RCA & Columbia Recordings 1970 to 1976 ... CD
Decision, 1970s. New Copy ... $6.99 7.99
A wonderful compilation of some of Virgin Islands-raised soul jazz great John Lucien's better material – culled from his ever-fresh records for RCA and Columbia throughout the 70s – really incredible stuff that works it's magic every time we hear it, yet has never been particularly easy to find in print over the years, especially in the US! Lucien's island upbringing is a distinctively great part of is charm, with a breezily melodic vibe, often with some lovely string accents – always with a spirtual soul resonance carried by his charismatic voice. This 17 track snapshot of his RCA and Columbia ouvre is very nicely selected – and the titles include ncludes "Dindi", "Find Yourself A Love", "Who Will Buy", "Lady Love", "Luella", "Esperanza", "Listen Love", "World Of Joy", "Creole Lady", "You Are My Love", "Maiden Voyage"., "Rashida", "Who Will Buy?", "Motherland", "Would You Believe me", "Hello Like Before" and "War Song". Peggy MarchIf You Loved Me – RCA Recordings From Around The World 1963 to 1969 ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $9.99
Peggy March is a singer with a surprisingly varied career – an artist that most folks know for only her early little girl pop fame – but one who went onto record a very unusual range of sounds as the 60s moved on! RCA was her label, and while she never hit the heights of the charts after her early hit, the company was more than committed to allowing Peggy's sound to grow and flourish – especially on the international scene, where she not only recorded tracks in other languages, but also picked up new non-American songs, and served up very cool English-language versions! This set really does a great job of moving past the early stuff, and looking at this lost later legacy of March's music – sounds that we'd easily compare to the hipper 60s material by Jackie DeShannon, even though Peggy didn't write her own material. The range of studio talents really keeps things interesting – there's even one track arranged by Ennio Morricone – and titles include "He's Back Again", "If You Loved Me", "He Couldn't Care Less", "Watch What You Do With My Baby", "Johnny Cool", "Kilindini Docks", "Eh Bravo", "Passo Su Passo", "Too Long Away", "Wasurenaiwa", "Ne Joue Pas Les Enfants", "He Couldn't Care Less", "This Heart Wasn't Made To Kick Around", "Can't Stop Thinkin About Him", and "Fool Fool Fool". Ames BrothersThere'll Always Be A Christmas (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Real Gone, 1957. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
The groovy harmony vocals of The Ames Brothers are a perfect fit for this Holiday classic from RCA – a record that features great orchestrations from Sid Ramin, the same arranger who worked with the group on their Destination Moon album! This set's maybe a bit more down to earth, but still has that nice punch that Ramin can bring to the music – and even when mellow, the Ames' still find a way to make the music their own – turning in a group harmony Christmas album years before the Swingle Singers or Beach Boys. Titles include "Santa Claus Is Comin To Down", "Christmas", "Go Tell it On The Mountain", "Jingle Bells", "The Christmas Song", "Deck The Halls", and "What Child Is This". CD features the original mono mix – and bonus tracks "I Got A Cold For Christmas" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm". CD

RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $8.99 11.98
An amazing bit of Brazilian funk – and the best album ever by this exciting soulful duo! The record's their first, and it's got a crackling intensity that you don't always find on their other albums – a groove that mixes hard samba with bass-heavy funk, with a sound that makes them one of the most important forces of the Samba Soul generation! There's lots here to love if you like the heavy grooves of Jorge Ben or Tim Maia – but the duo also have a really great approach of their own – especially in the way they'll trade voices back and forth, over grooves that also have plenty of back/forth action too! The record includes the amazing heavy piano/percussion jammer "Hipnose", plus the great cuts "Voce Abusou", "Kabaluere", "Se Quiser Valer", "Deus O Salve", "Nord West", and "Dalena". CD

Ataraxia (Mort Garson)Unexplained – Electronic Musical Impressions of the Occult ... CD
RCA/Fifth Dimension (Germany), 1975. Used ... $11.99
One of the spookiest albums we've ever heard from moog maestro Mort Garson – way darker and more complex than his Wozzard Of Id or moogy horoscope projects – with a feel that's much more like his legendary Black Mass album! Like that one, there's a fair current of supernatural running through the mix – an early use of the electronics to explore the darker corners of reality, served up with lots of cool 70s occult touches – in a way that's oddly more timeless than some of the later projects of this nature from the industrial generation. Garson's range of tones is wonderful – from fuzzy bassy bits, to sparkling keyboard lines, to lots of spacey sounds in between – and titles include "I Ching", "Tarot", "Deja Vu", "Seance", "Sorcerer", and "Astral Projection". RCA, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $6.99
Chet Atkins is groovin, but in a yesterday sort of way – hence the title of this sweet set from the start of the 70s! The record still has plenty of that excellent Atkins guitar work right up front in the mix – picking and strumming with the sublime sound that Chet created in the Nashville studios of RCA – in a mode that's maybe got some even jazzier currents on the guitar at times than some of his previous records – an upfront quality to the way the instrument steps up in the mix, especially on some of the more contemporary numbers. Titles include the slightly funky "Tennessee Pride", plus "Bring Me Sunshine", "Country Champagne", "Steeplechase Lane", "Yestergroovin", "Liberty", and "Gotta Travel On". LP, Vinyl record album

Gato BarbieriUnder Fire ... CD
RCA/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $13.99
An excellent set from the great Gato Barbieri – one of the gems from his earlier years on record, and an album that's very much in the best spirit of his sides for Impulse in the early 70s! There' definitely some Latin currents in the rhythm – not as strongly stated as on his Latin America series for that other label, but still there in the conception – and Gato blows with that sharp, soulful, spiritual tone that we love so much from this period – so different than the later sound of his smoother records. Lonnie Liston Smith is on piano in the group – getting pretty outside at times, as on his work with Pharoah Sanders – and the combo also features lots of great percussion from Airto and Mtume, too. All tracks are nice and long, and very searching – and titles include "El Parana", "Antonico", "El Sertao", and "Maria Domingas". CD

RCA, 1973. Very Good- ... $4.99
Funky rocking sounds from this hip Spanish group – with a bit of a tribal sound that's pretty sweet! The bass is pretty thundering, the drums are strong, and there's some cool piano and flute in the mix that give the cuts a bit of a Latin flourish. Most cuts have vocals, kind of in a rock-sounding mode – but the instrumentation is mostly funky all the way, and the album fits in well next to early 70s records by groups like War or some of their LA cronies. Titles include "The Horse", "Keep On Moving", "You Know", "Casanova", "Mr Money", and "Children". LP, Vinyl record album

Beat BoysBeat Boys (with bonus track) ... CD
RCA/Lion, 1968. New Copy ... $2.99 14.99
A hip little set from The Beat Boys – an Argetine group working in late 60s Brazil, supposedly with a bit of an influence on the sound of Tropicalia! The sound here is a bit straighter than the work of Caetano Veloso or Os Mutantes – a bit in the Jovem Guarda sound of more mainstream Brazilian rock, but with some hipper influences too – including a strong Beatles influence that makes for some great harmonies on the vocals, and instrumentation that really pushes beyond the standard straight Anglo rock modes of the time. Instrumentation features some fuzzy guitars, which are occasionally a bit tripped-out – plus organ, bass, and drums – all topped by echoey vocals from the group. Titles include "O Meu Tamborim", "A Time For Remembrance", "A Felicidade", "Wake Me Shake Me", "Sempre Esperando", "Aria Para A Corda Sol", and "Era Uma Menina". CD reissue features some great notes on the band, plus some vintage photos – and also includes the bonus track "Canudinho". CD

✨✧ David BowieAladdin Sane ... LP
RCA, 1973. Very Good ... $19.99
One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". Almost a "greatest hit" of "greatest hits" collection – given the importance of this album to the David Bowie catalog! Sure, it compiles tracks from other releases – but it also was the album that gave the world the killer cut "John I'm Only Dancing" – one of the key cuts in Bowie's gender revision in the 70s – and a title that was previously only out as a single! Alongside that gem, you also get a fantastic run of greatness from Bowie's first chapter of recording – the kind of cuts that would make other singers weep – including "Space Oddity", "Changes", "Ziggy Stardust", "Suffragette City", "Jean Genie", "Diamond Dogs", "Rebel Rebel", "Young Americans", "Fame", and "Golden Years". RCA, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
Less of a full-on soundtrack by Bowie than a collection of work from some of his best albums of the mid and late 70s – pulled together to provide a musical backdrop for the film Christiane F! The versions here are supposedly alternate ones, but we're thinking that's just hype – because they sound pretty darn close to the album versions. But that's ok with us, because the tunes are all great – well-chosen work pulled from the incredible stretch that includes Bowie's legendary Berlin trilogy. Titles include "TVC 15", "Heroes", "Boys Keep Swinging", "Sense Of Doubt", "Station To Station", "Warsawza", "Stay", and "V2 Schneider". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
One of the three great collaborations between David Bowie and Brian Eno – and possibly the ultimate statement from his years in Berlin! The album's got some tunes that still show some of the guitar power of the early 70s Bowie – but it's also got some of the beautiful spacier moments brought forward on Low – and which are every bit the Brian Eno of Another Green World. The balance is beautiful – stark and dark on one half, then airy and spacious on the next – handled without any sense of gimmickry, and a bold mainstream experiment that still resonates strongly today. Titles include "Beauty & The Beast", "Joe The Lion", "Heroes", "Sons Of The Silent Age", "Blackout", "V-2 Schneider", "Sense Of Doubt", "Moss Garden", "Neukoln", and "The Secret Life Of Arabia". The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! Titles include "Red Sails", "Look Back In Anger", "Repetition", "Boys Keep Swinging", "Red Money", "Yassassin", and "DJ". LP, Vinyl record album

The Thin White Duke turns to the east – and gets a whole new sound with help from Brian Eno! The album is an amazing departure from some of David Bowie's previous work – a set that's sparer, more spacious, and which is often instrumental – quite a statement, given Bowie's reputation as a songwriter at the time! It's almost like Bowie's shaking off all the confused stardom of the previous parts of the 70s – and is stepping forward as a new being from a new space – cleaner, leaner, and simpler than before – but hardly evacuated of soul at all, certainly not as much as you might guess from the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. David BowieSpace Oddity ... LP
RCA, 1969. Very Good+ ... $34.99
An amazing departure for David Bowie – hardly the kind of record you would expect from his oboe-filled tunes of a few years before – and really the start of the groundbreaking, earthshaking, reinventionist era of his genius! There's a spacious, soaring quality to Space Oddity that's every bit the kind of magical music you might hope for in a set recorded at the close of the 60s – a shift into new modes, new sounds that seem to suck up all the best influences in rock from the previous few years, but fuse it into a new cosmic vision for the next decade. And while others might stumble on cliche with the weight of such a task, Bowie pulls it off brilliantly – mixing his fuzzier feelings with some of his more personal leanings – and showcasing a newly deep sense of songwriting here that's really amazing. Some tunes have the sensitivity of work on Hunky Dory, while others burn with the fire of Man Who Sold The World – all in a balance that never sounds schizophrenic at all. Titles include"Space Oddity", "Memory Of A Free Festival", "God Knows I'm Good", "Cygnet Committee", and "Unwashed & Somewhat Slightly Dazed". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1975. Very Good+ ... $29.99
A brilliant soul album! That's right, we said SOUL album! Bowie was at the height of his Ziggy Stardust fame when this one was recorded – a drastic left-turn in styles, forged during a point in his American tour when he could take a break, head to Philly, plug in at the Sigma Sound Studios, and come up with some fantastic little soul tunes, thanks to help from Luther Vandross! The album sparkles with the best sound of Luther's early work – and you'll hear more than a bit of Luther's work on his own, and his tunes with Gregg Diamond on the set. Features the sublime tracks "Win", "Fascination", "Right", "Somebody Up There Likes Me", and "Can You Hear Me" – as well as the hits "Young Americans" and "Fame". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Arguably one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time – and the key flowering of the partnership between David Bowie and Mick Ronson! The guitars here are heavy – so much so that the record's always crossed over big with crowds who are always suspicious of Bowie's artier work of the 70s – and represented a crucial moment when his groundbreaking music also found a large mainstream audience as well. And despite the fact that Ziggy's an androgynous space rocker with a spurious pedigree, the manufactured posturing of the album's come to be taken quite literally over the years – a vivid text of alienation, expression, and redemption – served up beautifully over a host of classic tracks that include "Five Years", "Soul Love", "Moonage Daydream", "Suffragette City", and "Ziggy Stardust" – all further proof of Bowie's 70s ability to slide in wherever he wanted with ease! RCA, 1972. Very Good+ ... $16.99
A great early record from guitarist Lenny Breau – done in a really spacious style that showcases both his subtle talents and his strong inspiration from Bill Evans! The format here is relatively lean – and most numbers have Lenny playing virtually solo, but with a bit of bass on the bottom to come in and give the tunes a bit of a groove – nothing funky or over the top, just a gentle glide that frees up Breau's guitar even more strongly from rhythm work, and lets him concentrate on the warmly chromatic hues that are his greatest strength. Titles include "Cold Cold Heart", "Hard Day's Night", "Monday Monday", "Taranta", "King Of The Road", and "Music To Watch Girls By". CD features the bonus track "Call Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Legendary violinist Jascha Heifetz performs here on a TV special for NBC – but don't expect the music to be too simplistic or commercial – because the set is a real standout in the later years of Heifetz on record! The performances are beautifully recorded – especially the initial solo on Bach's "Chaconne" from Partita No 2, and the selections of "Rondo" by Mozart, "March" by Prokifieff, "La Fille Aux Cheveaux De Lin" by Debussy, and "It Ain't Necessarily So" by Gershwin – all done as duets with pianist Brooks Smith, recorded at ORTF in Paris. Side two features Heifetz revisiting Bruch's "Scottish Fantasy" with the New Symphony Orchestra Of London, conducted by Malcolm Sargent – a full reading from an earlier date, presented here – in contrast to the abbreviated one that appeared on the television program. One of the biggest releases of the 70s from the underground dancefloor team of Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael – a duo best known for their cutting-edge work on their own P&P label – but who still sound equally great here on a much bigger label! As with the P&P grooves, the tracks here are long and space – and filled with cool touches on keyboards and electronics – way different than most major label vocals, and hipper than you might guess from the cover! The grooves get nice and funky at points, and in addition to keyboards from Adams and Carmichael, the set also features vocals from Donna Green and Leroy Burgess. Nice all the way through – and tracks include "Lady Bug", "I Love You", "Honey Bun", "Space Shuttle Ride", and "I Got A Big Bee". CD

RCA, 1981. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A standout solo moment from the amazing Keni Burke – an artist who's come a long way from his youthful start in the 5 Stairsteps! Keni had recorded other adult work by the time of this early 80s set, but Changes is easily his best-remembered album – a masterpiece of 80s groove, all arranged and produced by Burke – who also played a fair bit of the music on the set as well! The tunes are upbeat and grooving – often with a rhythm that goes nicely right down the middle, and never tries to be too funky or clubby. This groove is epitomized by Burke's classic "Risin' To The Top" – a tune that's been sampled heavily over the years, to great fame – and which is probably the lasting legacy of this set. But the whole album's totally great – sophisticated 80s groove at its best – with other cuts that include "Who Do You Love", "Shakin", "Can't Get Enough", "Changes", "All Night", and "Hang Tight". One of the few albums ever cut by the team of Octavio Burnier and Claudio Cartier – a mid 70s Brazilian duo with a sweet and soulful finish! Both Burnier and Cartier play guitar – but not in a spare, Baden Powell-like way. Instead, they've got a sound that's very full – touched with much of the Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s, and given a smooth electric finish that makes for some very nice grooves. The guitar work is excellent – jamming away on tracks that also sport keyboards, electric bass, and vocals by a variety of singers – including Roberto Quartin, Alberto Arantes, Sonia Burnier, and Jaime Luiz. RCA/Vocalion (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $16.99
Three-dimensional magic from the great Jimmy Castor – an artist who'd already conquered the worlds of sweet soul, heavy funk, and Latin by the time of this release! Jimmy draws on all his rich background in the soul underground, and also seems to move with a new sort of sophistication, too – not in a way that's slick or commercial, but which shows Jimmy only deepening his ideas in the era of Marvin Gaye and Isaac Hayes – going for some bigger arrangements and ambitious production, while still staying true to his groovy self! There's a vibe to the record that almost reminds us of some of the creative productions that Harvey Fuqua was doing for RCA at the same time – with New Birth and The Nite-Liters – and Jimmy's maestro seems to be Gerald Thomas, who knows how to spin just the right mood for each different track. There's even a few instrumentals, which showcase Castor's great skills on tenor – ala Stanley Turrentine in a similar mode – and tracks include "How Beautiful You Are", "Helpless", "I'm Not A Child Anymore", "The Lone Ranger", "Revelation", "Whiter Shade of Pale", and the tasty "The Last Ole", which is sort of a rumbling sinister slow funk track.
