✨✧ Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersBest Of The Columbia & RCA/Vik Years 1956 to 1959 ... CD
Sony/Real Gone, Late 50s. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
A nice collection of overlooked work from Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – not the oft-reissued material from the group's years at Blue Note, but instead some slightly more obscure sides recorded for Columbia and RCA! The work here also represents a time when Blakey was experimenting a bit more with the group – a stretch right before he settled into some of the more-recorded groups with Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, and Bobby Timmons – but still had a great ear for important younger talent! Players here include Bill Hardman, Donald Byrd, and Lee Morgan on trumpets; Jackie McLean on alto; Johnny Griffin, Hank Mobley, and Benny Golson on tenor; and Horace Silver and Sam Dockery on piano! The set includes material from the albums Hard Bop, Drum Suite, Jazz Messengers, Night In Tunisia, and some of the French-only live recordings that Blakey did for RCA in the late 50s – and the set features 16 tracks that include "Nica's Dream", "Evidence", "Blues March For Europe No 1", "Along Came Manon", "Lester Left Town", "Night In Tunisia (live)", "Moanin With Hazel", "Night In Tunisia (take 3)", "Ecaroh", "Cubano Chant", "Almost Like Being In Love", "The Sacrifie", and "Couldn't It Be You (take 4)". Kenny CarterShowdown – The Complete 1966 RCA Recordings ... CD
RCA/Kent (UK), 1966. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The long-overdue release of the complete RCA recordings of Kenny Carter – a hell of a singer who should have been huge, but who only saw a few tracks issues as singles back in the day! This set corrects that fact, and brings together 22 titles that Kenny recorded for RCA – magnificent music that often rivals the best of the time from Walter Jackson or Jerry Butler – from the rich arrangements provided behind the vocals, to the fantastic reach that Carter brings to the lyrics – mature, expressive, and with a balance between pride, power, and honest emotion that's really stunning. Had Carter gotten to continue in this vein, he would have been instrumental in shaping the role of the male singer in soul music during the 60s – but at least he finally gets his due here, in a stunning set list that includes "I Still Love Her", "You'd Better Get Hip Girl", "Don't Go", "Showdown", "My Love", "Living In The Land Of Heartache", "Round In Circles", "Like A Big Bad Rain", "I Can't Stop Laughing", "Lights Out", "How Can You Say Goodbye", "I'll Know", and "I Believe In You". RCA/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Early 60s. New Copy 8CD ... $44.99
A legendary run of music from the late, great Sam Cooke – almost all of his recordings for RCA Records, packaged here in one sweet little package! The scope of the set is wonderful – and almost something of a revelation, given that a number of these titles have never appeared on CD in the US before – making this collection a real discovery in soul music! Cooke first came out of the underground in the late 50s – and by the time he hit RCA, was really ready to take on new challenges – recording some key tracks that would help redefine the sound of soul for the 60s – and also working on some special album projects that expanded the range of work that he was handling – showing off some great sides of his talents. The set features the killer live album One Night Stand – recorded at the Harlem Square Club – plus the studio albums Cooke's Tour, Hits Of The 50s, Swing Low, My Kind Of Blues, Twistin The Night Away, Mr Soul, and Night Beat – all packaged in these cool little LP-styled sleeves! ExcitersSoul Motion – The Complete Bang, Shout, & RCA Recordings 1966 to 1969 ... CD
Bang/Shout/RCA/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Incredible work by The Exciters – material we totally love to death, most of which is a lot harder-hitting than the group's earlier hits in the 60s! The package pulls together their post-UA recordings for the Bang, Shout, and RCA labels – the first to of which are represented by singles, the last by a full LP and some great extra material from 45s – all of which is really incredible stuff that moves way past any pop soul expectations you may have! Production is by Bert Berns on the non-RCA material, and Larry Banks on the RCA sides – and both producers bring an incredibly hip sound to the recordings, mixing the unique deep soul lead of Brenda Reid with some very groovy backings – arranged by Artie Butler, George Patterson, and Teacho Wiltshire, all of whom bring something unique to the mix. The force of these sides is amazing – almost a revolution in female soul, captured in the history of one group – and the booklet features very full notes on the girls, culled from interviews, and telling the story of their legendary years in the 60s. CD contains all of the legendary Caviar & Chitlins LP, plus lots of singles – 21 tracks that include "Take One Step I'll Take Two", "Soul Motion", "Number One", "A Little Bit Of Soap", "Number One", "You Don't Know What You're Missing", "Blowing Up My Mind", "Movin Too Slow", "Turn Me On", "A Year Ago", "You Got Me", "Always", "Fight That Feelin", "Give It All", and "Weddings Make Me Cry". ✨✧ Evelyn Champagne KingEvelyn Champagne King – The RCA Albums 1977 to 1985 (8CD set) ... CD
RCA/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 8CD ... $44.99 65.98
A massive collection of music – eight full albums from Evelyn Champagne King, plus bonus tracks as well! King was a hell of a singer who came along at just the right time – as cool and classy enough to have sung jazz in decades before, but with a richness that also really fit the spirit of 70s soul – and was perfect for the new infusion of grooves that the music got during the disco generation! King could sing disco, but also hit a lot wider range too – which made for some really well-formed records during her years at RCA – all of which are collected here! Unlike some of her crossover contemporaries, Evelyn managed to grow with the years and stay strong as the 80s moved in – shifting styles a bit, but never losing her groove – and working here with production and arrangements from the likes of T Life, Kashif, Willie Lester, Morrie Brown, Andre Cymone, and Leon Sylvers – all of whom help shape the groove. The box features the full albums Smooth Talk, Music Box, Call On Me, I'm In Love, Get Loose, Face To Face, So Romantic, and A Long Time Coming – nearly all of which are presented with bonus tracks – all wrapped up in a box set, with a 40 page booklet of notes. ✨✧ Michael NesmithDifferent Drum – The Lost RCA Victor Recordings ... CD
RCA/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
That's a country-looking Mike Nesmith on the cover – which is no surprise, as these cuts were all recorded during Nesmith's great early 70s country rock years on RCA – although none of them were issued at the time! Those in the know love Mike's fantastic records with The First National Band – done after his time in The Monkees, at a time when he was really letting his hair down and his songwriting skills flow – to a point where he was joining the hipper country-inspired world of The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds! Those modes are in full flourish here – in a set that features 16 vocal numbers from the RCA years, including many rare alternates – and 8 more instrumentals, which show the wonderful use of pedal steel from Red Rhodes, and some of the other hip players on the sessions. Titles include "American Airman", "Six Days On The Road", and "Circle Sky" – plus rare alternates of "Some Of Shelly's Blues", "Marie's Theme", "Roll With The Flow", "Different Drum", "Tengo Amore", "Dedicated Friend", "Texas Morning", "Rene", "Listen To The Band", and other vocal tunes – some in very different arrangements. Instrumental tunes include "Hollywood", "Tan My Hide", "You Are My One", "Born To Love You", and "Magnolia Simms" – and the set also features a bonus "Loose Salute" radio spot too! CD

Holy cow! Tito recorded a heck of a lot of great music for the RCA label during the 50s – and you'll get plenty of it on this amazing set that features a total of 108 tracks on 6CDs! The package has a logic that seems to be historical – except for the fact that the historical progression of music is repeated in a similar direction on both volumes of the set, meaning that they both include work from the years 1949 to 1959, although packaged separately. Titles on this first volume include "Ran Kan Kan", "Guayaba", "Chang", "Mi Chiquita Quiere", "Black Pearl", "Brazil", "Camellia", "Happy Land Of Hunza", "Hong Kong Mambo", "Flying Down To Rio", "Lotus Land", "Mama Inez", "Elegua Chango", "Kiss Of Fire", "Una Mujer", "Philadelphia Mambo", and "Miramar". CD
(Out of print. Includes 6 discs, each in an LP style, but is missing the booklet. Outer box is unfortunately a little flimsy, and has some wear and creases. Still a ton of great music for the price!)

RCA, 1980s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Post-Motown music from Diana Ross – cuts from the 80s years at RCA when she was really changing up her sound! The label offered Diana a lot of freedom in her music, and she used her time at the company to really try out a wide range of new sounds – some that recall her earlier years, some that lean more towards some of the more crossover soul RCA was doing at the time. Production and arrangements are by Lionel Richie, Tom Dowd, Barry Gibb, Ray Parker Jr, and others – and titles include "Muscles", "Chain Reaction", "Experience", "It's Never too Late", "Love Or Loneliness", "Missing You", "Selfish One", "Tell Me Again", "Endless Love", "It's Hard For Me To Say", "Being In Love With You", "In Your Arms", "Mirror Mirror", and "Let's Go Up". ✨✧ Chet BakerChet Is Back! (RCA Masters) ... LP
RCA (France), 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of Chet Baker's rarest albums – and a great one! The session was recorded in Rome in 1962, at a time when Chet's star had fallen quite a bit on the American scene, and it features him working with some of the hippest European players at the time – like Rene Thomas on guitar, Bobby Jaspar on tenor and flute, Amadeo Tomassi on piano, and Daniel Humair on drums. The tracks are longer than those on some of Chet's earlier albums – with an angularity that brings out new modes of blowing on some of his solos. Titles include "Blues In The Closet", "Barbados", "Star Eyes", "Pent Up House", and "Ballata In Forma Di Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Toshiko AkiyoshiKogun (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $18.99
Brilliantly bold work from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi – an artist who's really coming into her own for the 70s – stepping out in a big band format that would win her a wide new audience on both sides of the Pacific! The album's one of the first to feature the ensemble co-led with husband Lew Tabackin – a group that features strong work from American players who include Dick Spencer and Gary Foster on alto saxes, Tabackin and Tom Peterson on tenor, Bill Perkins on baritone, Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets, and Charles Loper and Jim Sawyer on trombones. The horns are only part of the picture, though – as the inventive writing and arranging from Akiyoshi is what really makes the album great – a strong sense of painting with sound, while still keeping things swinging – really unlocking all the best elements that had been opened up for larger ensembles in the previous few years. The set features all original tracks that include "Kogun", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Elegy", and "Memory". CD

An amazing bit of Brazilian funk – and the best album ever by this exciting soulful duo! The record's their first, and it's got a crackling intensity that you don't always find on their other albums – a groove that mixes hard samba with bass-heavy funk, with a sound that makes them one of the most important forces of the Samba Soul generation! There's lots here to love if you like the heavy grooves of Jorge Ben or Tim Maia – but the duo also have a really great approach of their own – especially in the way they'll trade voices back and forth, over grooves that also have plenty of back/forth action too! The record includes the amazing heavy piano/percussion jammer "Hipnose", plus the great cuts "Voce Abusou", "Kabaluere", "Se Quiser Valer", "Deus O Salve", "Nord West", and "Dalena". CD

A really special sort of album from the great Bobby Bare – a set that's a collaborative effort with songwriter Bob McDill, as you can probably guess from the title! Bob gives Bobby tunes that are nicely different than some of the mid 70s material he was recording for RCA – maybe a bit more down to earth, with less easy attempts at wit – and at a level that show a maturing Bare, in styles that are similar to some of the shifts that Merle Haggard was taking at the time. Titles include "If You Think I'm Crazy Now", "Look Who I'm Cheating On Tonight", "The Woman In Every Man's Life", "Tired Of The Road Joe", "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", and "Till I Get On Feet". The rare, late 80s gem from Black Rock & Ron – dedicated to and featuring production by the late, great Paul C McKasty – along with some production by Jazzy Jay and Skeff Anselm. You can hear Paul C's influence in the edits, the tightness of the beats and the layering and chopping of the samples, which definitely pushes this set to higher level. The rhymes are impressive, too – especially in the heavier, rawer and harder hitting tracks. Solid duo rap and tight production from the Hollis, Queens crew. Titles include 'You Can't Do Me None", "Black Is The Word", "That's How I'm Livin'", "Getting Large", "I'm Tired", "3 Brothers And Yvonne", "Rap Life", "Act Like You Know" and "Black, Rock & Ron (video mix)". 15 tracks in all. One of the few albums ever cut by the team of Octavio Burnier and Claudio Cartier – a mid 70s Brazilian duo with a sweet and soulful finish! Both Burnier and Cartier play guitar – but not in a spare, Baden Powell-like way. Instead, they've got a sound that's very full – touched with much of the Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s, and given a smooth electric finish that makes for some very nice grooves. The guitar work is excellent – jamming away on tracks that also sport keyboards, electric bass, and vocals by a variety of singers – including Roberto Quartin, Alberto Arantes, Sonia Burnier, and Jaime Luiz. Titles include "Marcante", "Europanema", "Lembrando Ed Kleiger", "Lejos De Mi", "Aldeia Global", and "So Tem Lugar Pra Voce". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA (France), 1967/1968. Near Mint- 3LPs ... $24.99
A pretty great 3LP set that documents one of Gary Burton's greatest groups – the quartet he formed with Larry Coryell on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums. The group recorded these 3 albums for RCA in 1967 and 1968 – and really pushed Gary's style past the straight jazz approach of earlier albums, into the open-ended style that made him one of the freer vibists of the 70s. Haynes is especially great, as his free touch on the drum kit is perfect for Burton's modal wanderings on the vibes. Titles include "One Two 1234", "Response", "Ballet", "Sweet Rain", "General Mojo Cuts Up", I'm Your Pal", "Lines", "Blue Comedy", "Walter L", and "Wrong Is Right". LP, Vinyl record album

Quite an unusual session from Gary Burton – recorded in Nashville, with a mix of jazz and country session players – coming together in an open-ended sound that's got lots of complicated touches. Gary's jazz side is represented by Roy Haynes on drums, Steve Swallow on bass, and Steve Marcus on sax – and the Nashville side of things is handled by players that include Buddy Emmons, Ray Edenton, Charlie McCoy, and Chet Atkins, who duets with Burton on two spare tracks. The sound is hard to describe, but quite different from, and equally striking as, Burton's 60s albums for RCA. Titles include "Epilogue", "Alone & Forsaken", "Walter L", "I Want You", "Just Like A Woman", "Gone", "Tennessee Firebird", "Beauty Contest", and "Born To Lose". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary ByrdPresenting The Gary Byrd Experience (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Get On Down, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
A wicked lost album of righteous funk and poetic knowledge from the great Gary Byrd! Gary began his life as a soul DJ in New York, but by the early 70s, he was using his rich voice to create recordings designed to educate as much as entertain. That said, the album is as funky as it is strident, and innovatively soulful – it's got raw and heavy drums and horns the burst in, but there's also roomier, slinkier grooves created to frame Byrd's voice and mood. The arrangements are by Chico O'Farrill and he really delivers. Gary Byrd's storytelling and spoken delivery leads the way, though – righteousness without bitterness, angry yet agreeable – truly brilliant and unique work! Titles include "To You Beautiful Black Sister", "If The People Only Knew (Power To The People)", "Shining Black Prince", "Country Preacher", and "How Long My People" and more. This great 2011 CD edition from Get On Down includes the bonus "Soul Travelin' Pt I (The GBE)" and "Soul Travelin' Pt I (The GBE)". CD

Our Brazilian section just got a whole lot groovier! This 1967 album by Mario Castro-Neves and his Samba SA group is a real gem – a breezy vocal group set with an approach that's clearly influenced by the Sergio Mendes Brasil 66 style, but which also has touches of European 60s jazz – in a cool modal scatting mode that really makes the songs dance around nicely! There's a sparkling sound here that's strongly influenced by bossa, but which also has some sunnier 60s touches too – and Mario's arranging skills are at an all-time high on the lightly dancing rhythms of the tunes. Jessi Colter with Waylon JenningsCountry Star Is Born/Leather & Lace ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), 1970/1981. New Copy ... $13.99
The first-ever album from Jessi Colter – paired here with a famous duet set with husband Waylon Jennings! First up is A Country Star Is Born – the fantastic debut of Jessi Colter – done at a time when the lady had already hitched up with Waylon Jennings at a personal level, and was also sharing some of his nascent outlaw qualities in her music! In fact, we might make an argument that this album predates some of Jennings' bigger outlaw moments – and also has a similar sort of quality in the early years – with qualities in Colter's voice that are very different than the Nashville mainstream, almost as if she's equally aware of phrasing from female folk singers – set to a very hip batch of tunes from Colter herself (as Miriam Eddy), Harlan Howard, Willie Nelson, and Mickey Newbury. The set includes a duet with Waylon Jennings on "I Ain't The One" – and other titles include "It's Not Easy", "He Called Me Baby", "Too Many Rivers", "Cry Softly", and "If She's Where You Like Livin". Leather & Lace is the first full album of duets between Jessi Colter and Waylon Jennings – two romantic partners who'd been crossing paths on records a few times during the 70s, and finally got the chance to step out in an album of their own! The approach is a bit like some of the other RCA pairings of stars during the 70s, in that sometimes Waylon is mostly in the lead, sometimes Jessi – but you can definitely hear the sympathy that both feel for each other, and the album's most special moments really come when they share the lead together. Titles include "Pastels & Harmony", "You Never Can Tell", "Rainy Seasons", "I'll Be Alright", "You're Not My Same Sweet Baby", "Storms Never Last", and "What's Happened To Blue Eyes". CD

Good news galore from the great Sam Cooke – maybe THE album in which he fully shows off his unique contribution to soul music in the 60s – that mix of raw and sweet, easygoing and progressive – a mode that had a huge impact at the time, and went onto become a strong influence for years to come! Key proof of this approach is the landmark track "A Change is Gonna Come" – a slyly righteous track that became a huge Civil Rights anthem and has continued to have social power for many years. And even the more mundane titles have a fresh approach too – like the hit "Another Saturday Night", and a host of other gems that include "Home", "No Second Time", "The Riddle Song", "Good Times", "Meet Me At Mary's Place", and "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day". A brilliant overview of Sam's best secular soul from the 60s – a well-done collection that contains tracks from Sam's early sessions for RCA, and which presents the material with a full set of notes by Peter Guaralnick, and complete details on all the sessions! Some of the tunes on here were hits, but there's a lot more here that are less familiar, including a few unreleased numbers – such that hearing the CD together is like finding that great, lost, no-nonsense Sam Cooke album that never really came out at the time! Titles include "Shake", "Yeah Man", "Good Times", "Falling In Love", "Meet Me At Mary's Place", "Rome (Wasn't Built In A Day)", "The Riddle Song", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "I'm Just A Country Boy", "Keep Movin On", and "There'll Be No Second Time". 23 tracks in all. Wonderful mellow work from Sam Cooke – and a set that's recorded with a sound that's very much in keeping with the "night beat" that you might expect from the title! In fact, there's not so much a "beat" as a simple easy groove – a gentle sort of "night" feeling, with some piano in the lead on many tracks, and backing by a larger group conducted by Rene Hall – a great setting that lets Cooke hit some of his most soulful moments on record from the time! Sam CookeSam Cooke At The Copa ... LP
RCA, 1964. Sealed ... $29.99
A classic live album – one of the first in soul music, and a beautiful set of smooth soul tunes from Sam Cooke! Sam's singing at the high-end nitespot The Copacabana – and like many live sets performed there, this one's tailored a bit to the classy crowd at the show – but that doesn't stop him from using his voice to perfection, sweetly crafting beautiful lines on a batch of standards given the soul treatment, plus a few of Sam's own hits. And sure, it's easy to criticize this album after the release of the Live At The Harlem Square album in the mid 80s – which was recorded a year earlier, but rejected by RCA in favor of this album's crossover potential – but keep in mind that for most folks who didn't grow up with the hindsight of reissues, this album was all they had, and it still had quite an impact in the soul market. Titles include "The Best Things In Life Are Free", "Try A Little Tenderness", "If I Had A Hammer", "Twistin The Night Away", "You Send Me", and "This Little Light Of Mine". LP, Vinyl record album

Totally groovy work from John Dankworth – a 70s album that features slightly electrified versions of some of his older film and TV themes! The approach is quite different than the originals at times – with horn passages that are even quirkier, and some cool use of electric piano by Tony Hymas, which really sets the mood of the best tracks. The album's best known for its funky break version of "Modesty Blaise" – made famous by a sample from Del – but the whole thing's pretty great, both if you dig soundtrack work, and if you like the cooler big band styles of the British scene. A reunion of sorts for Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan – given that the pair had played together on record 5 years before, in a similar session for Verve! This album's almost lighter and more airy than the previous one – as it's done in a mode that echoes strongly with Desmond's own genius at RCA at the time – using a piano-less quartet format that has both horns carving out their own subtle space in sound, hanging together, but each occupying a different range of tonal color. The tracks are relatively longish, and the pair dart around each other nicely on tracks like "All The Things You Are", "Out Of Nowhere", "Blight Of The Fumble Bee", and "Two Of A Mind". CD

Paul Desmond doesn't get any better than this – blowing his icy cool alto next to warm guitar lines from the mighty Jim Hall – a classic RCA Records pairing in jazz, heard to great effect on this classic album! There's a slight bossa groove to some of the rhythms, which is great for Desmond's sound – and the backing is also free of piano, so the guitar and alto hang together wonderfully by themselves – suspended in space, dipping and turning around each other beautifully! The pair get some very light rhythmic accompaniment from Connie Kay on drums, and either Percy Heath or Gene Wright on bass – on titles that include "That Old Feeling", "Easy Living", "Blues For Fun", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", and "When Joanna Loved Me". George DuningWorld Of Suzie Wong ... LP
RCA, 1960. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A strange film, but a great soundtrack! George Duning came up with an excellent batch of jazzy tracks for the film – and most of them swing hard and tightly, with strong jazzy solos, in a manner that's similar to some of Mancini's best scores of the late 50s. A number of tracks have odd "Eastern" touches in the melody – mostly through the use of percussion – and this makes the jazzy tracks even nicer, and gives them a strange feel that's similar to some of the "east meets jazz" albums on Verve during the 60s. Titles include "Aberdeen Caper", "Gwenny Lee", "At The Namcock", "Groove For Suzie", and "Hit The Road To Dreamland". Towards the end of the soundtrack, some cuts have a more orchestral feel, and this is in keeping with the change of mood in the film. LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/FTG, 1980. Used ... $11.99
The only RCA album from Enchantment – and a great little set that has the group stretching out from their earlier records on United Artists! The groove here is still awash in the great harmonies we've always loved from the group – and production is by Don Davis, who always has a great ear for preserving the core soul of any act like this – while also helping them focus their sound as well! The mix is quite similar to excellent work Don did with the Dramatics at the end of the 70s – and Enchantment really benefit with a similar ear for a bouncy groove, and that great Davis way of knowing just the right point when to slow things down on an album, too. Titles include "Settin It Out", "I Believe In You", "Moment Of Weakness", "You & Me", "I Can't Be The One", "Soft Lights Sweet Music", and "I Can't Fake It". Life goes on for Faith, Hope, & Charity – and goes on pretty darn strongly, too – thanks to some wonderful work from the great Van McCoy, served up at a level that really goes beyond his stock sound of the time! The group's blend of one male and two female singers really works well in the context – shifting leads well from track to track to suit the mood of the set – and almost coming across like some sort of extended "suite" of killer 70s soul. This fact is further enforced by the album's great "live spiral" tracks – short cuts under 30 seconds that link together the longer tunes on the set. Titles include "You've Gotta Tell Her", "Just Wanted To Say I Love You", "You're My Peace Of Mind", "Life Goes On", "Gradually", and "Positive Thinking". RCA, Late 60s. Used ... $6.99
An amazing record! By all rights, this shouldn't be so good – but it's an incredible album of haunting tracks that really has us coming back again and again over the years. The formula is simple: Jose plays late 60s pop tunes on acoustic guitar, and sings them in his spacey soulful voice. Backings are by George Tipton, plus a jazz combo made up of Jim Horn, Ray Brown, and Milt Holland – but it's Jose that really makes the whole thing amazing! His style of presentation is like anything else we can describe – filled with sadness and soul, but enough joy to keep moving forward. He takes tracks like "Light My Fire", "In My Life", "Sunny", and "California Dreamin", and transforms them into an amazing document of the darkness hidden behind the sun of southern California. "California Dreamin" is especially amazing – and Jose's version is one of the best soul songs of all time! CD

Sock-hard soul from Aretha Franklin's funky sister! This album shines with the best of Aretha's late 60s work for Atlantic – with a hard soul approach that shares both elements of Aretha's mellow southern soulful numbers, plus an added bonus of a good Northern soul groove on the best tracks!
