Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersBest Of The Columbia & RCA/Vik Years 1956 to 1959 ... CD
Sony/Real Gone, Late 50s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 19.99
A nice collection of overlooked work from Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – not the oft-reissued material from the group's years at Blue Note, but instead some slightly more obscure sides recorded for Columbia and RCA! The work here also represents a time when Blakey was experimenting a bit more with the group – a stretch right before he settled into some of the more-recorded groups with Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, and Bobby Timmons – but still had a great ear for important younger talent! Players here include Bill Hardman, Donald Byrd, and Lee Morgan on trumpets; Jackie McLean on alto; Johnny Griffin, Hank Mobley, and Benny Golson on tenor; and Horace Silver and Sam Dockery on piano! The set includes material from the albums Hard Bop, Drum Suite, Jazz Messengers, Night In Tunisia, and some of the French-only live recordings that Blakey did for RCA in the late 50s – and the set features 16 tracks that include "Nica's Dream", "Evidence", "Blues March For Europe No 1", "Along Came Manon", "Lester Left Town", "Night In Tunisia (live)", "Moanin With Hazel", "Night In Tunisia (take 3)", "Ecaroh", "Cubano Chant", "Almost Like Being In Love", "The Sacrifie", and "Couldn't It Be You (take 4)". RCA/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Early 60s. Used 8CD ... $39.99
A legendary run of music from the late, great Sam Cooke – almost all of his recordings for RCA Records, packaged here in one sweet little package! The scope of the set is wonderful – and almost something of a revelation, given that a number of these titles have never appeared on CD in the US before – making this collection a real discovery in soul music! Cooke first came out of the underground in the late 50s – and by the time he hit RCA, was really ready to take on new challenges – recording some key tracks that would help redefine the sound of soul for the 60s – and also working on some special album projects that expanded the range of work that he was handling – showing off some great sides of his talents. The set features the killer live album One Night Stand – recorded at the Harlem Square Club – plus the studio albums Cooke's Tour, Hits Of The 50s, Swing Low, My Kind Of Blues, Twistin The Night Away, Mr Soul, and Night Beat – all packaged in these cool little LP-styled sleeves! ExcitersSoul Motion – The Complete Bang, Shout, & RCA Recordings 1966 to 1969 ... CD
Bang/Shout/RCA/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Incredible work by The Exciters – material we totally love to death, most of which is a lot harder-hitting than the group's earlier hits in the 60s! The package pulls together their post-UA recordings for the Bang, Shout, and RCA labels – the first to of which are represented by singles, the last by a full LP and some great extra material from 45s – all of which is really incredible stuff that moves way past any pop soul expectations you may have! Production is by Bert Berns on the non-RCA material, and Larry Banks on the RCA sides – and both producers bring an incredibly hip sound to the recordings, mixing the unique deep soul lead of Brenda Reid with some very groovy backings – arranged by Artie Butler, George Patterson, and Teacho Wiltshire, all of whom bring something unique to the mix. The force of these sides is amazing – almost a revolution in female soul, captured in the history of one group – and the booklet features very full notes on the girls, culled from interviews, and telling the story of their legendary years in the 60s. CD contains all of the legendary Caviar & Chitlins LP, plus lots of singles – 21 tracks that include "Take One Step I'll Take Two", "Soul Motion", "Number One", "A Little Bit Of Soap", "Number One", "You Don't Know What You're Missing", "Blowing Up My Mind", "Movin Too Slow", "Turn Me On", "A Year Ago", "You Got Me", "Always", "Fight That Feelin", "Give It All", and "Weddings Make Me Cry". Evelyn Champagne KingEvelyn Champagne King – The RCA Albums 1977 to 1985 (8CD set) ... CD
RCA/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 8CD ... $44.99 65.98
A massive collection of music – eight full albums from Evelyn Champagne King, plus bonus tracks as well! King was a hell of a singer who came along at just the right time – as cool and classy enough to have sung jazz in decades before, but with a richness that also really fit the spirit of 70s soul – and was perfect for the new infusion of grooves that the music got during the disco generation! King could sing disco, but also hit a lot wider range too – which made for some really well-formed records during her years at RCA – all of which are collected here! Unlike some of her crossover contemporaries, Evelyn managed to grow with the years and stay strong as the 80s moved in – shifting styles a bit, but never losing her groove – and working here with production and arrangements from the likes of T Life, Kashif, Willie Lester, Morrie Brown, Andre Cymone, and Leon Sylvers – all of whom help shape the groove. The box features the full albums Smooth Talk, Music Box, Call On Me, I'm In Love, Get Loose, Face To Face, So Romantic, and A Long Time Coming – nearly all of which are presented with bonus tracks – all wrapped up in a box set, with a 40 page booklet of notes. Columbia, Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. Used 10 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Incredible music from Charles Mingus – a set that's pulled from a few different periods, yet features some of his greatest recordings ever! The package begins with a stunning 2CD version of Tijuana Moods – a true Mingus masterpiece, filled with amazing rhythms and mindblowing solos – presented here with loads of bonus tracks and alternates, too! Then, you hit Mingus' key Columbia years at the end of the 50s – the landmark albums Mingus Ah Uhm and Mingus Dynasty – supported here by an extra CD's worth of important alternate takes – which show the strong development of the music! Next is Mingus in the early 70s – some of his best recordings from this later stretch – the sublime Let My Children Hear Music, easily some of his most creative longform work at the time – and the brilliant 2CD Charles Mingus & Friends In Concert – which reminds us just how strongly Charles can spur on a soloist. The set's completed by the posthumous release of material titled Epitaph – another 2CD set – and the package features detailed notes, recollections from Sue Mingus, and rare photos too! CD

Michael NesmithDifferent Drum – The Lost RCA Victor Recordings ... CD
RCA/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
That's a country-looking Mike Nesmith on the cover – which is no surprise, as these cuts were all recorded during Nesmith's great early 70s country rock years on RCA – although none of them were issued at the time! Those in the know love Mike's fantastic records with The First National Band – done after his time in The Monkees, at a time when he was really letting his hair down and his songwriting skills flow – to a point where he was joining the hipper country-inspired world of The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds! Those modes are in full flourish here – in a set that features 16 vocal numbers from the RCA years, including many rare alternates – and 8 more instrumentals, which show the wonderful use of pedal steel from Red Rhodes, and some of the other hip players on the sessions. Titles include "American Airman", "Six Days On The Road", and "Circle Sky" – plus rare alternates of "Some Of Shelly's Blues", "Marie's Theme", "Roll With The Flow", "Different Drum", "Tengo Amore", "Dedicated Friend", "Texas Morning", "Rene", "Listen To The Band", and other vocal tunes – some in very different arrangements. Instrumental tunes include "Hollywood", "Tan My Hide", "You Are My One", "Born To Love You", and "Magnolia Simms" – and the set also features a bonus "Loose Salute" radio spot too! CD

✨✧ Art Farmer & Hal McKusickComplete Studio Recordings [Hal McKusick Quintet (Coral)/Cross Section Saxes/Hal McKusick Quintet (RCA)] ... CD
Coral/Lonehill (Spain), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great chapter in the growth of Art Farmer during the 50s – his brief time spent in the studio blowing with Hal McKusick on a set of tightly-arranged albums that were some of the best in 50s modern jazz! Art had first come to prominence blowing with Quincy Jones in the earlier part of the decade, but his work with McKusick helped shape and discipline his tone even more – really opening up the love of space and soundshape that would surface even more strongly in Farmer recordings of the 60s and 70s, and providing a nice counterpoint to McKusick's more angular, sometimes academic approach to his own reed work. CD features a total of 19 tracks in all – all the Farmer-included titles on the Hal McKusick Quintet albums for RCA and Coral, plus others from the unique Cross Section Saxes album as well. Titles include "Down & Dirty", "Alone Together", "Criss Cross", "Pon Su", "Old Devil Moon", "For Art's Sake", "It Never Entered My Mind", and "Just Leave It Alone". CD

✨✧ Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big BandKogun ... LP
RCA, 1974. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Brilliantly bold work from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi – an artist who's really coming into her own for the 70s – stepping out in a big band format that would win her a wide new audience on both sides of the Pacific! The album's one of the first to feature the ensemble co-led with husband Lew Tabackin – a group that features strong work from American players who include Dick Spencer and Gary Foster on alto saxes, Tabackin and Tom Peterson on tenor, Bill Perkins on baritone, Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets, and Charles Loper and Jim Sawyer on trombones. The horns are only part of the picture, though – as the inventive writing and arranging from Akiyoshi is what really makes the album great – a strong sense of painting with sound, while still keeping things swinging – really unlocking all the best elements that had been opened up for larger ensembles in the previous few years. The set features all original tracks that include "Kogun", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Elegy", and "Memory". LP, Vinyl record album

A 70s classic from the team of Toshiko Akioshi and Lew Tabackin – a duo who did for the jazz ensemble mode in their generation what Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland did in the 60s! The material here is wonderfully inventive – the kind of compositions that Toshiko wouldn't have even written in her smaller combo years – fleshed out here by a fantastic group that includes Lew Tabackin and Gary Foster on reeds, and Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets – all in a setting where the voices of the individual members really get a lot of space to shine! Titles include "Since Perry", "Opus No Zero", "Long Yellow Road", "First Night", "Children In The Temple Ground", and "Yet Another Tear". LP, Vinyl record album

Hard-swinging big band material – with a heavy emphasis on drums! The album is a suite of six tracks – all written by either Manny Albam or Ernie Wilkins, both of whom arrange the groups on the set – really letting them open up nicely on the album's longish tracks. Manny and Ernie were two of the more soulful arrangers of their day – and they get some strong performances out of the groups, letting players like Conte Candoli on trumpet, Hal McKusick on alto, Al Cohn on tenor, and Freddie Green on guitar open up in longer tracks driven to intensity by some great drum work handled by the lesser-known (but excellent) Ted Sommer. Titles include "Skinning The Valves", "Dancers On Drums", "Bristling", and "The Octopus". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 27.98
An amazing bit of Brazilian funk – and the best album ever by this exciting soulful duo! The record's their first, and it's got a crackling intensity that you don't always find on their other albums – a groove that mixes hard samba with bass-heavy funk, with a sound that makes them one of the most important forces of the Samba Soul generation! There's lots here to love if you like the heavy grooves of Jorge Ben or Tim Maia – but the duo also have a really great approach of their own – especially in the way they'll trade voices back and forth, over grooves that also have plenty of back/forth action too! The record includes the amazing heavy piano/percussion jammer "Hipnose", plus the great cuts "Voce Abusou", "Kabaluere", "Se Quiser Valer", "Deus O Salve", "Nord West", and "Dalena". Ataraxia (Mort Garson)Unexplained – Electronic Musical Impressions of the Occult (orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
RCA/Sacred Bones, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 22.98
One of the spookiest albums we've ever heard from moog maestro Mort Garson – way darker and more complex than his Wozzard Of Id or moogy horoscope projects – with a feel that's much more like his legendary Black Mass album! Like that one, there's a fair current of supernatural running through the mix – an early use of the electronics to explore the darker corners of reality, served up with lots of cool 70s occult touches – in a way that's oddly more timeless than some of the later projects of this nature from the industrial generation. Garson's range of tones is wonderful – from fuzzy bassy bits, to sparkling keyboard lines, to lots of spacey sounds in between – and titles include "I Ching", "Tarot", "Deja Vu", "Seance", "Sorcerer", and "Astral Projection". Brian AugerStraight Ahead ... LP
RCA, 1974. Very Good ... $11.99
Long lean groovers from Brian Auger and the Oblivion Express group – recorded with a slightly freer feel than some of the group's earlier albums, and an approach that has them stretching out nicely! Brian still sings a bit on some tracks, but there seems to be more of a focus than before on the keyboards – that nicely compressed Auger use of Hammond and electric piano that actually went onto influence a fair bit of American players at the time, in the way that Auger himself had been influenced before by their own earlier work. Rhythms are great throughout – making all tracks funky, in a laidback sort of way – and titles include a remake of "Bumpin' On Sunset", one of the band's best tracks, plus "Change", "Beginning Again", "You'll Stay In My Heart", and "Straight Ahead". Bobby BareDetroit City & Other Hits/500 Miles From Home/Talk Me Some Sense/Bird Named Yesterday (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Four gems from the early RCA years of Bobby Bare – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Detroit City – a classic early album from the great Bobby Bare – proof that the man had plenty of charms in the years before he started working with hip singer/songwriter material! The set kicks off with the huge title cut – a track that Bobby does better than just about anyone else – and it follows with a host of well-chosen cuts and some surprisingly great originals – showing an early songwriting side of Bare that didn't always get exposure in later years! Bobby's got a great edge in his vocals, even young – less of the pop modes that you'd hear on some of his singles – on titles that include "Shame On Me", "Detroit City", "Is It Wrong", "Dear Wastebasket", "The Gods Were Angry With Me", "Book Of Love", and "I Don't Believe I'll Fall In Love Today". 500 Miles is early genius from Bobby Bare – a set that shows just how great he was at the start – able to bring a special spin to a country tune, even amidst some of the fuller Chet Atkins production at RCA! Bobby's got a very unique style – maybe more urban than you might expect, but still with a twang – a quality that always made him perfect for songs of moving and longing, as in the title cut. There's plenty of other numbers in that mode, too – including a few penned by Bobby himself – in a lineup that includes "Let Me Tell You about Mary", "Abilene", "Worried Man Blues", "Sailor Man", "Homestead On The Farm", "Gotta Travel On", "500 Miles From Home", and "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight". Talk Me Some Sense is wonderful work from Bobby Bare – a record that already shows the young singer reaching for hip material, and coming up with a mature way of putting over a tune that's unlike anyone else! There's some slight currents of folk in the music – but as with the early John Hartford records on RCA, the style is more country overall – but also in a very different space too – inheriting some of the hipper inflections of the changing 60s, even amidst familiar RCA production – which puts a really special spin on all the tunes. Titles include "A Little Bit Later On Down The Line", "Got Leavin On Her Mind", "Long Black Veil", "All The Good Times Are Past & Gone", "You Can't Stop The Wind From Blowing", "Heaven Help My Soul", "It Ain't Me Babe", and the great original "Passin Through". Bird Named Yesterday is one of the coolest Bobby Bare albums of the 60s – a precursor to some of his concept albums of the 70s, but done in a bit of a different mode too! Bobby delivers these little recitations between most of the tunes – speaking in different characters, but in a way that evokes some of the larger spirit that Lee Hazlewood brought to his projects of the period – a quality that's also echoed in the way that Bare puts over a tune – mature, and with a nice sense of distance that brings about a slight current of wit – quite unusual for RCA country at the time! The set includes some great tunes by a young Jack Clement – and titles include "Somebody Bought My Old Hometown", "The Air Conditioner Song", "The Day The Saw Mill Closed Down", "Bird Named Yesterday", "The Old Gang's Gone", and "They Covered Up The Old Swimmin Hole". Bonus tracks include "The Town That Broke My Heart", "Don't Do Like I Done Son", "Sandy's Crying Again", and "When Am I Ever Gonna Settle Down". CD

Sublime work by a singer who should have dominated the 60s – had he not left this planet in an auto accident early in his short career! Jesse is wonderful here – getting even more coolness and class on RCA than he did in an indie setting – with help from the groups of Shorty Rogers and Dennis Farnon! Most numbers are standards, but done in a nicely soulful style – with titles that include "Witchcraft", "Guess Who", "Alright OK You Win", "Secret Love", "Love Is Here To Stay", "Now You Know", "Take Me Back To The Island", and "Funny". RCA/Get On Down, 1989. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
The rare, late 80s gem from Black Rock & Ron – dedicated to and featuring production by the late, great Paul C McKasty – along with some production by Jazzy Jay and Skeff Anselm. You can hear Paul C's influence in the edits, the tightness of the beats and the layering and chopping of the samples, which definitely pushes this set to higher level. The rhymes are impressive, too – especially in the heavier, rawer and harder hitting tracks. Solid duo rap and tight production from the Hollis, Queens crew. Titles include 'You Can't Do Me None", "Black Is The Word", "That's How I'm Livin'", "Getting Large", "I'm Tired", "3 Brothers And Yvonne", "Rap Life", "Act Like You Know" and "Black, Rock & Ron (video mix)". 15 tracks in all. Luiz BonfaNew Face Of Luiz Bonfa ... CD
RCA (Brazil), 1970. Used ... $9.99
A wickedly wonderful record from Luiz Bonfa – one that has his bossa-inflected guitar style supported by larger arrangements by Marty Manning. The feel is kind of bossa meets 60s easy meets early CTI – as Manning's work reminds us a lot of the larger orchestrations penned by Don Sebesky or Claus Ogerman at the end of the 60s, a perfect foil for the tighter guitar work of Bonfa – making the album one of the best showcases of his style from the time! Tracks include "Helicopter 274", "Window Girl", "Peixe Bom", "Salvador", and "Africana" – and the record sounds like a lost 70s Italian soundtrack! CD

The first truly great David Bowie electric guitar album – an all-out, power-driven set of tracks played by a group that included Mick Ronson and Tony Visconti! Bowie's in prime pre-Ziggy mode here – ripping into tunes that blister with dark energy that are some of the first truly dangerous songs he ever recorded – with this strong undercurrent of mania that follows some of the darker whimsy of his earliest records – set to searing sounds that would forever help Bowie cross over to audiences who might previously have thought him an arty wimp. The set includes classics like "Saviour Machine", "The Width Of The Circle", "All The Madmen", "Black Country Rock", "The Supermen", and the title track, "The Man Who Sold The World". Chico BuarqueChico Buarque Ao Vivo Paris – Le Zenith ... CD
BMG/RCA (Brazil), 1990. Used ... $5.99
Live work by Chico Buarque – a surprisingly nice set overall, and a great demonstration of the way the energy of his live albums almost took over force from his studio sets at this point in his career! The double-length performance features some great musical direction from Cristovao Bastos – and mixes together some of Chico's more upbeat modes with other tunes that have a moodier feel, quite spare, dark, and somber – touching on a side of Chico that's not always heard in studio work from the time! Titles include "Vai Passar", "O Que Sera", "Joao E Maria", "Rio 42", "Todo O Sentimento", "Partido Alto", "Desalento", and "A Rita". Amazing package, too – comes in a hardcover book-style jacket, with a bonus 42 page book that also includes full color images, with lots of vintage photos, plus notes on the record in Portuguese! The whole thing's sort of an update of the old Abril Cultural style of the 70s – brought into the CD generation. CD

Chico Buarque & Ennio MorriconePer Un Pugno Di Samba ... CD
RCA/Sony (Italy), 1970. New Copy ... $25.99 30.99
An amazing record – one that stands as one of Chico Buarque's greatest from the 70s! The set was recorded in Italy in 1970 – and features Chico singing lead vocals over backings handled by Ennio Morricone – all in a style that's a perfect blend of MPB with the best elements of the Italian scene of the time! The songs are all originals written by Chico – and have a light and dreamy samba/bossa feel, one that's inflected by the off-beat orchestral style of Morricone, and supported by vocals from I Cantori Moderni. The feel is halfway between Chico's work on RGE and some of the dreamier Morricone soundtracks of the time – and it's a wonderful thing to have a strong male lead vocal over backings from Morricone – a really rare thing for the time, with results that are tremendous. Titles include "Rotativa", "Samba E Amore", "Nicanor", "Tu Sei Una Di Noi", "In Te", "Ed Ora Dico Sul Serio", and "Quete E Quelle". CD

RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 27.98
One of the few albums ever cut by the team of Octavio Burnier and Claudio Cartier – a mid 70s Brazilian duo with a sweet and soulful finish! Both Burnier and Cartier play guitar – but not in a spare, Baden Powell-like way. Instead, they've got a sound that's very full – touched with much of the Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s, and given a smooth electric finish that makes for some very nice grooves. The guitar work is excellent – jamming away on tracks that also sport keyboards, electric bass, and vocals by a variety of singers – including Roberto Quartin, Alberto Arantes, Sonia Burnier, and Jaime Luiz. Titles include "Marcante", "Europanema", "Lembrando Ed Kleiger", "Lejos De Mi", "Aldeia Global", and "So Tem Lugar Pra Voce". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary Burton, Hank Garland, & OthersAfter The Riot At Newport ... LP
RCA, 1960. Very Good- ... $6.99
It's a little known fact that Nashville, although best remembered as a center of country music, has also given the world some pretty great jazz players – some of whom easily skirt the line between jazz and country studio work. This set's a great summation of that tradition – featuring jam session tracks by some of the city's best jazzmen at the turn of the 60s – Gary Burton, Hank Garland, Chet Atkins, Floyd Cramer, Bob Moore, Brenton Banks, and Boots Randolph. Some of the players are best known as pop instrumentalists, but open up here nicely in the album's more relaxed setting – summed up well by the tune "Relaxin", and heard over other tracks that include "Opus De Funk", "Nashville To Newport", "Round Midnight", and "Riot Chorus". Gary ByrdPresenting The Gary Byrd Experience (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Get On Down, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
A wicked lost album of righteous funk and poetic knowledge from the great Gary Byrd! Gary began his life as a soul DJ in New York, but by the early 70s, he was using his rich voice to create recordings designed to educate as much as entertain. That said, the album is as funky as it is strident, and innovatively soulful – it's got raw and heavy drums and horns the burst in, but there's also roomier, slinkier grooves created to frame Byrd's voice and mood. The arrangements are by Chico O'Farrill and he really delivers. Gary Byrd's storytelling and spoken delivery leads the way, though – righteousness without bitterness, angry yet agreeable – truly brilliant and unique work! Titles include "To You Beautiful Black Sister", "If The People Only Knew (Power To The People)", "Shining Black Prince", "Country Preacher", and "How Long My People" and more. This great 2011 CD edition from Get On Down includes the bonus "Soul Travelin' Pt I (The GBE)" and "Soul Travelin' Pt I (The GBE)". CD

A little bit funk, a little bit disco – these guys were typical of the fate of the small funky combo at the end of the 70s. A few years earlier, and they might have had a rougher edge – but here, they're working with slap bass, tightly produced drums, and a full style of production that has all the elements working together in a polished form. The record's not that bad overall, though – it's just that it's not nearly as exciting as you'd expect from the kind of ghetto cover and sinister name of the project. Titles include "Get It Up Get It In", "Love Monster", "Plastic Saddle", "Layin Too Low Too Long", and "Speed Of Sound". LP, Vinyl record album

Al Cohn & Shorty RogersEast Coast – West Coast Scene ... LP
RCA, 1954. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A classic session in the tried and true marketing style of "East Coast vs West Coast" jazz, with one side of tracks by a group led by Al Cohn, and featuring Gene Quill, Hal McKusick, and Joe Newman. The other side's got Shorty Rogers representin' on the West Coast, with Jimmy Giuffre, Zoot Sims, Bud Shank, and Shelly Manne. The album's a nice batch of tracks, in the tightly arranged style that characterizes many of these mid-50's RCA jazz sessions. However, since Cohn's measured playing could never really be taken for New York Hot, and since his longtime partner Zoot Sims is part of Rogers' West Coast group, it's hard to say that these sides are really any sort of true battle between the coasts. Instead, though, the tracks are nice and long, with more room for solos than usual, and titles that include "Loki", "Cool Sunshine", and "Inside Out". LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette ColemanFriends and Neighbors – Ornette Live At Prince Street ... CD
Flying Dutchman/RCA (France), 1970. Used ... $14.99
One of the most compelling albums we've ever heard from Ornette Coleman – and a set that's very different than some of his other work for different labels – particularly his better-known material for Blue Note and Atlantic! The album's got a righteous feel that's right up there in the best spirit of the Flying Dutchman label of the early 70s – a mode that's still on the far reaches of avant jazz that Ornette explored on earlier sessions – but which also has a warmer, almost more spiritual quality at times too. The core group features legendary partners Charlie Haden on bass, Dewey Redman on tenor, and Ed Blackwell on drums – but part of the record features an unnamed group of "Friends & Neighbors", who join in on the title cut with this collaborative spirit that really sets the tone for the whole record. Coleman plays trumpet and violin in addition to his usual alto sax – and titles include the mindblowing two part "Friends & Neighbors", plus "Let's Play", "Long Time No See", "Forgotten Songs", and "Tomorrow". There were plenty of prog groups with a strong classical influence, but Continuum maybe wear that influence on their sleeve more than most – given that the whole first half of the record features really jamming interpretations of classical themes, before the group deliver a suite of their own on side two – billed as "a ritualistic invocation"! Don't let the "classical" put you off, though – as these guys are hardly academic or staid, and really open up in a lineup that includes guitar, harmonica, recorder, and saxes from Yoel Schwarcz, next to some great organ from Tim Rice – both great players who get plenty of bass and drums to drive them forward strongly! Side two features the group's own beautiful "Autumn Grass", which runs for over 26 minutes – and the whole album's instrumental, and features the other tracks "Byrd Pavan", "Vivaldi Synthesis Two", and "Overdraft". RCA, 2014. New Copy 2 LPs Gatefold ... $24.99
D'Angelo comes back after many years awol from the studio – and the result is a stunning new step in his music! We've loved the man from day one – and some folks could well say that he really helped reinvigorate soul back in the 90s – and all his time away from the studio has definitely been formative, as he comes back here with a righteous power that really blows away all his previous work! D'Angelo still loves the slow beat and mellow approach to funk – but he's also picked up a lot more fuzz and freak, too – righteous energy that more than lives up to the Black Messiah promised by the title, as do the lyrics. Instrumentation includes work by Questlove on drums, Roy Hargrove on trumpet, and Jesse Johnson on guitar – and the grooves have these tripping, slow-percolating elements that really give the lyrics a great sort of crackle. More than worth the wait – as you'll hear on titles that include "Back To The Future (parts 1 & 2)", "Sugah Daddy", "Really Love", "1000 Deaths", "Ain't That Easy", "Betray My Heart", "The Door", and "Till It's Done (Tutu)". RCA, 1962. Used ... $5.99
A reunion of sorts for Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan – given that the pair had played together on record 5 years before, in a similar session for Verve! This album's almost lighter and more airy than the previous one – as it's done in a mode that echoes strongly with Desmond's own genius at RCA at the time – using a piano-less quartet format that has both horns carving out their own subtle space in sound, hanging together, but each occupying a different range of tonal color. The tracks are relatively longish, and the pair dart around each other nicely on tracks like "All The Things You Are", "Out Of Nowhere", "Blight Of The Fumble Bee", and "Two Of A Mind". CD

Paul Desmond doesn't get any better than this – blowing his icy cool alto next to warm guitar lines from the mighty Jim Hall – a classic RCA Records pairing in jazz, heard to great effect on this classic album! There's a slight bossa groove to some of the rhythms, which is great for Desmond's sound – and the backing is also free of piano, so the guitar and alto hang together wonderfully by themselves – suspended in space, dipping and turning around each other beautifully! The pair get some very light rhythmic accompaniment from Connie Kay on drums, and either Percy Heath or Gene Wright on bass – on titles that include "That Old Feeling", "Easy Living", "Blues For Fun", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", and "When Joanna Loved Me". Duke EllingtonFar East Suite – Special Mix (Bluebird) ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, 1966. Used ... $5.99
One of Ellington's greatest albums of the 60s – and a record tinged with Eastern themes and darkly angular modern arrangements. The group here features Ellington stalwarts Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Harry Carney, Cootie Williams, Mercer Ellington, and Rufus Jones – and the players work together tightly to craft the suite of tracks based on Ellington's impressions of recent travels through the Mid and Far East during the 60s. Titles include "Tourist Point Of View", "Isfahan", "Depk", "Mount Harissa", "Amad", "Agra", and "Blue Pepper". Plus, the CD reissue features 4 alternate takes not on the LP! CD

EnchantmentSoft Lights Sweet Music (with bonus track) ... CD
RCA/FTG, 1980. Used ... $9.99
The only RCA album from Enchantment – and a great little set that has the group stretching out from their earlier records on United Artists! The groove here is still awash in the great harmonies we've always loved from the group – and production is by Don Davis, who always has a great ear for preserving the core soul of any act like this – while also helping them focus their sound as well! The mix is quite similar to excellent work Don did with the Dramatics at the end of the 70s – and Enchantment really benefit with a similar ear for a bouncy groove, and that great Davis way of knowing just the right point when to slow things down on an album, too. Titles include "Settin It Out", "I Believe In You", "Moment Of Weakness", "You & Me", "I Can't Be The One", "Soft Lights Sweet Music", and "I Can't Fake It". CD features a bonus 12" mix of "Settin It Out". CD
