Faith Hope & CharityFaith Hope & Charity (RCA) ... LP
RCA, 1975. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Sweet 70s soul from Faith Hope & Charity – a trio who had recorded previously, but who really burst out here at the start of the disco years with some strong studio help from the great Van McCoy! The style of the record isn't really disco, but isn't far off either – as McCoy mixes lively rhythms and soaring strings with the vocal interplay of the trio – who come off much more as a well-formed soul group than some of the other trios of the generation – who were often just doing chorus vocals for the grooves! Singer Brenda Hillard really soars at times – with a lead that sets fire to the tracks nicely – and titles include the classic "Find a Way", plus "Just One Look", "Disco Dan", "Rescue Me", "Little Bit Of Love", "Don't Go Looking For Love", and "To Each His Own". Charlie RichToo Many Teardrops – The Complete Groove & RCA Recordings ... CD
RCA/Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 22.99
A great look at a really lost legacy in music from Charlie Rich – obscure sides recorded for RCA Records in the early 60s – done after his initial rush of genius on Sun Records, and before his later commercial success on Epic! Charlie's got one of the all-time great voices in pop music – a richness that easily rivals that of Memphis contemporary Elvis Presley, and which never fully got its due at the time – even though labels like RCA and Smash provided Rich with some fantastic material and production! Charlie's work for Smash has been picked up by the cognoscenti in recent years, and we'd honestly put these RCA tracks right up alongside them – with a similar Tennessee blend of soul and rock, rural and urban – all delivered by Charlie's incredibly charming vocal approach, and recorded with a depth that goes way beyond the usual RCA production modes of the time. There's plenty of currents of soul in the mix – even some New York-styled modes, which really work well with Rich – and this 40 track set is the first time this material has ever been pulled together – long-overdue, and a real treat to our ears! Titles include "Like Someone In Love", "Lady Love", "Nice & Easy", "Big Boss Man", "It's All Over Now", "The Grass Is Always Greener", "Now Everybody Knows", "My Mountain Dew", "The Big Build Up", "She Called Me Baby", "Gentleman Jim", "Christmas Greetings", "All Of My Friends Are Gonna Be Strangers", "Is Goodbye That Easy To Say", "Tragedy", "Ten Dollars & A Clean White Shirt", "Tomorrow Night", and "No Room To Dance". ZulemaJust Can't Say Goodbye – The Best Of The RCA Years ... CD
RCA/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
A killer overview of the RCA years of Zulema Cusseaux – a heck of a great singer, and one who worked with some excellent styles during her 70s years in soul! Zulema's got a slightly righteous approach to her music – a style schooled in the deep soul of her Floria roots, but focused on some tighter, groovier charts here – thanks to top-shelf work from studio talents like Bert DeCoteaux, Leon Pendarvis, and Van McCoy – all of whom bring a really special sort of magic to these sides! Zulema's got the kind of voice that might have faltered if given the wrong direction – but here, it really takes off – especially given the excellent choices in the collection, which nicely avoids some of the few mis-steps on Zulema's fuller albums. 19 tracks in all – including "Standing In The Back Row Of Your Heart", "I Love You Baby", "Pity For The Children", "You Had To Know", "Half Of Your Heart", "It Will Never Be The Same Again", "Why Did It Have To End This Way", and "Love To Last Forever". ✨✧ VariousRCA Groovy Songbirds ... CD
RCA (Japan), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $24.99
Sweet 60s pop from RCA Records – really special tracks that come from a time when the label was figuring out newer, groovier ways to work with some of its female vocalists – including some who'd scored bigger hits in the generation before! The package follows very strongly in the Columbia Groovy Songbirds mode – in that it firstly focuses on tunes that have a cool 60s sort of vibe – very different than the earlier pop RCA would use in the earlier part of the decade with gal singers, or in the 50s. And secondly, the package features very obscure tracks, even by big names – many of which are from 45-only releases on the label. The whole thing's overflowing with great surprises – and titles include "The Playground" by Barbara Cooper, "They Don't Know You" by Linda Scott, "I Was Only Kidding" by Ann Margaret, "Summer Sunshine" by Skeeter Davis, "Walking Down Broadway" by Betty Barnes, "But For Love" by The Angels, "If It Hadn't Been For You" by Tami Vincent, "Tell Him" by Suzi Wallis, "Thinking Through My Tears" by Peggy March, "I Can Hear The Rain" by Reparata & The Delrons, and "I Talk To Your Picture" by Lesley Miller. 26 tracks in all! VariousStill Groove Jumping – 16 Classic Rockin R&B Tracks From RCA's Groove Label ... LP
RCA/Detour (UK), Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A cool collection of work from RCA's great Groove subsidiary in the 50s – home to some excellent R&B singles that were a far cry from the label's mainstream pop of the time! These cuts easily stand head to head with anything on labels like Atlantic or King at the time – and the collection unearths a whole host of tracks we'd never heard before – some rough and blusey, some with a tighter edge that's definitely at the best level of the pre-soul generation! The bluesy numbers are especially great – recorded at a level you'd never expect from RCA, at least not since the 30s – and often have these raw guitar lines that ring out like something you might hear from the Chess studios at the time. The set features great notes, with session details on the tracks – and titles include "High Low Jack" by Buddy Lucas, "Down To The Bottom" and "You Better Heed My Warning" by Larry Dale, "All My Life" by Roy Guitar Gaines, "Peek A Boo" by Mr Bear, "Rockin With Red" by Piano Red, "Drink Up" by The Du Droppers, "Country Boy" by Tiny Kennedy, "She's Got No Hair" by Arthur Crudup, and "When I Got Married" by Champion Jack Dupree. Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandMosaic Select (Kogun/Long Yellow Road/Tales Of A Courtesan/Insights/March Of The Tadpoles) (3CD set) ... CD
RCA/Mosaic, 1974/1975/1976/1977. Used 3CD ... $69.99
Seminal work from one of the hippest big bands of the 70s – the legendary ensemble led by pianist Toshiko Akioshi and reedman Lew Tabackin! The group marks a huge shift for Akiyoshi – a move away from the more bop-inflected small combo work of earlier years, into a rich new role as a composer and arranger – one who comes up with fantastic charts for the ensemble, filled with color, tone, and a great sense of swing! Tabackin's reeds are great too – always handled with bold lines, and a strongly visionary sound – and other players on the dates include Bill Perkins and Gary Foster on saxes, Bobby Shew and Ron Raider on trumpets, Britt Woodman and Charlie Loper on trombones, Don Baldwin on bass, and Peter Donald on drums. The 3CD set features 5 albums in all – Kogun, Long Yellow Road, Tales Of A Courtesan, Insights, and March Of The Tadpoles – and titles include "Elegy", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Opus Number Zero", "Since Perry/Yet Another Tear", "Strive For Jive", "Village", "Studio J", "Mobile", "Deracinated Flower", and "Notorious Tourist From The East". Swingin early work from Ann-Margret, always the vivacious one – and we're not even talking about her voice! The album follows in the style of work that Ann was recording for films at the time – punched-up and feisty, with that growling and almost unbridled sexuality oozing forth from most of the numbers. Arrangements are by Bob Florence and HB Barnum, and the album features a nice version of "Senor Blues", plus the tracks "Begin The Beguine", "Thirteen Men", "I Was Only Kidding", "Tell Me Tell Me", and "Make Love To Me". Brian Auger & The TrinityBefour ... LP
RCA, 1970. Very Good+ ... $5.99
The third album from Brian Auger & The Trinity – and the first to feature the group recording without vocals from Julie Driscoll! The sound here is just as soulful as before – a tight take on American soul jazz and funky soul of the 60s – pushed along by Auger's mighty work on the Hammond organ, and featuring (this time around) some male lead vocals, which seem to give the album an even deeper feel than earlier work! Auger's included some great covers of American tunes like "I Want To Take You Higher", "Listen Here", and "Maiden Voyage" – all redone with some great Brit beat group touches – and the album also features a great take on Faure's "Pavane", and Auger's own "Just You Just Me". One of the lost treasures from the late 60s RCA catalog – a very strange, and very hippy-dippy mix of hard rock, blues, and slight folksy touches – recorded with lots of nice production twists and turns, and plenty of tripped out guitar work! There's kind of a messed-up New York scene feel to the set – not exactly ESP rock, but somewhere in the neighborhood of The Fugs, or maybe Beefheart at times. Titles include "Parahighway", "Ancestral Wants", "A Hundred Days", "Auto Salvage", "Burglar Song", and "Rampant Generalities". LP, Vinyl record album

David Axelrod/Cannonball AdderleyMessiah ... LP
RCA, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $28.99
David Axelrod takes on Handel's Messiah – and the result is an amazingly complex set of music – very similar to his earlier albums on Capitol Records, and his Warner work with the Electric Prunes! If you love the Axe, you'll find plenty to love here – spare, dark orchestrations, often with a subtle hint of funk in the rhythms, some jazzy flourishes, and this bold sense of studio majesty that marks Axelrod as one of the most inventive producers of his time! The sound's one that gave birth to a whole generation of hip hoppers and beatheads – and the proceedings are conducted by Cannonball Adderley, with a feel that's similar to other Adderley/Axelrod high-concept sets – like Soul Of The Bible or Soul Zodiac. Titles include "Overture", "Worthy Is the Lamb", "Behold Recitative", "Comfort Ye My People", and "And The Angel Said Unto Them". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/Bear Family (Germany), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
Groundbreaking work from the great Mickey Baker – a postwar electric guitarist who maybe took the music from the bluesy territory of T Bone Walker, and helped push it forward to the earliest roots of rock and soul! Mickey recorded these searing singles for RCA subsidiaries Vik and Groove, plus labels that include Savoy and MGM – all in the years before he was paired with singer Sylvia Robinson in the duo Mickey & Sylvia – who would hit much greater fame later on in the decade! These tracks are heavy on hard twang from Mickey, and often feature his unbridled vocals really taking over the microphone too – all in the company of endlessly hip combo players who include King Curtis on tenor, Ray Crawford on guitar, Ray Barretto on congas, Sam Taylor on tenor, Champion Jack Dupree on piano, and Panama Francis on drums. The set ends with a few recordings with Sylvia, too – and features 28 tracks in all, with very detailed session notes and writings on Baker's career. Titles include "Guitar Mambo", "Bobi", "Guitarambo", "Please Tell Me", "Greasy Spoon", "Shake Walkin", "Rock With A Sock", "Chloe", "Woe Woe Is Me", "Hello Stranger", "I'm Tired", "Oh Happy Day", "Love Me Baby", and "Down To The Bottom". The great start of the legendary Bobby Bare – a singer who'd move onto rich new territory in the 70s, but who was also pretty darn fantastic in his early years too! Bobby's a hell of a singer – and here, he makes some real magic with songs that run the gamut – in a package that features some very obscure early work for Capitol, Challenge, and Fraternity Records – singles that most folks don't know about at all – before then moving into all the early RCA Records material that really helped put Bobby on the map in the mid 60s! The whole thing's done in the usual strong Bear Family style – and in addition to hits like "500 Miles Away From Home", "Detroit City", and "Miller's Cave" – the package also includes lots of obscure album cuts that are long out of print, and even some unusual German recordings too. Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersArt Blakey & The Jazz Messengers Au Club St. Germain 1958 ... CD
RCA (France), 1958. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Seminal work from Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers – recorded at a time when that group was really coming together! After a slightly wayward year of 1957, when the Messengers had a different lineup away from Blue Note, Art re-forged the group for the end of the 50s with a rock-solid array of players – including a young Lee Morgan on trumpet and Bobby Timmons on piano, plus Benny Golson on tenor, with a sense of arrangement that really helps give the group some focus – while still letting the solos open up in a live setting like this! All tracks are long, and played with lots of fire – and the kind of amazing open-ended solos that the group could cook up whenever they were working in a live environment. The tracks are great too – as Benny Golson rewrote "Blues March" into "Blues March For Europe No 1", and Bobby Timmons contributed "Moanin With Hazel", a new version of "Moanin". Other titles include Bill Hardman's "Politely", Benny Golson's "Along Came Manon" and "Out Of The Past", Monk's "We Named It Justice", and the perennial Jazz Messenger favorite, "Like Someone In Love", a track that Blakey always manages to make come alive with new energy that you'd never expect! 2CDs, featuring all the tracks from the initial 3 LP series! David BowieAladdin Sane ... LP
RCA, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". Almost a "greatest hit" of "greatest hits" collection – given the importance of this album to the David Bowie catalog! Sure, it compiles tracks from other releases – but it also was the album that gave the world the killer cut "John I'm Only Dancing" – one of the key cuts in Bowie's gender revision in the 70s – and a title that was previously only out as a single! Alongside that gem, you also get a fantastic run of greatness from Bowie's first chapter of recording – the kind of cuts that would make other singers weep – including "Space Oddity", "Changes", "Ziggy Stardust", "Suffragette City", "Jean Genie", "Diamond Dogs", "Rebel Rebel", "Young Americans", "Fame", and "Golden Years". RCA/Parlophone, 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99 21.98
The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! Titles include "Red Sails", "Look Back In Anger", "Repetition", "Boys Keep Swinging", "Red Money", "Yassassin", and "DJ". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ David BowieScary Monsters ... LP
RCA, 1980. Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
David Bowie back in costume at the end of the 70s – but informed enough from his Berlin trilogy that he's coming at things quite differently here! The album's a great summation of the sounds on Low, Heroes, and Lodger – taken almost back to some Ziggy Stardust and Space Oddity territory, but in ways that are a bit leaner, and more focused. Even more impressive, though, is the near-complete absence of other 1980 elements in the set – hardly any influences from punk or new wave, no post-disco dancefloor elements – just deeply unique Bowie all the way through, and proof that he could always find his own space in music when he wanted! Titles include "Up The Hill Backwards", "Teenage Wildlife", "Scream Like A Baby", "Because You're Young", "Scary Monsters", "Ashes to Ashes", "Fashion", and "Kingdom Come". LP, Vinyl record album

David BowieSpace Oddity ... LP
RCA, 1969. Very Good ... $19.99
An amazing departure for David Bowie – hardly the kind of record you would expect from his oboe-filled tunes of a few years before – and really the start of the groundbreaking, earthshaking, reinventionist era of his genius! There's a spacious, soaring quality to Space Oddity that's every bit the kind of magical music you might hope for in a set recorded at the close of the 60s – a shift into new modes, new sounds that seem to suck up all the best influences in rock from the previous few years, but fuse it into a new cosmic vision for the next decade. And while others might stumble on cliche with the weight of such a task, Bowie pulls it off brilliantly – mixing his fuzzier feelings with some of his more personal leanings – and showcasing a newly deep sense of songwriting here that's really amazing. Some tunes have the sensitivity of work on Hunky Dory, while others burn with the fire of Man Who Sold The World – all in a balance that never sounds schizophrenic at all. Titles include"Space Oddity", "Memory Of A Free Festival", "God Knows I'm Good", "Cygnet Committee", and "Unwashed & Somewhat Slightly Dazed". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1973. Near Mint- ... $39.99
Arguably one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time – and the key flowering of the partnership between David Bowie and Mick Ronson! The guitars here are heavy – so much so that the record's always crossed over big with crowds who are always suspicious of Bowie's artier work of the 70s – and represented a crucial moment when his groundbreaking music also found a large mainstream audience as well. And despite the fact that Ziggy's an androgynous space rocker with a spurious pedigree, the manufactured posturing of the album's come to be taken quite literally over the years – a vivid text of alienation, expression, and redemption – served up beautifully over a host of classic tracks that include "Five Years", "Soul Love", "Moonage Daydream", "Suffragette City", and "Ziggy Stardust" – all further proof of Bowie's 70s ability to slide in wherever he wanted with ease! RCA, 1968. Very Good ... $3.99
The first album ever from The Brotherhood – an offshoot of Paul Revere & The Raiders, filled with some of that group's greatest early players! The core of the group features Drake Levin on guitar, Phil Volk on bass, and Mike Smith on drums – romping with the kind of raw, party-styled energy they brought to their work with their previous group – but at a level here that's way more heady, and definitely shows a stronger influence from psych! Tunes are still plenty catchy, but have some weird undercurrents too – in a cool Sunshine Pop sort of style – and the range of instrumentation is nicely fresh, and even a bit richer than usual for this sort of record. Titles include "Somebody", "Pastel Blue", "Close The Door", "Seasons", "Love For Free", "Lady Faire", and "Ice Cream". LP, Vinyl record album

An even tighter set than the first album from The Brotherhood – and one that has the group really finding a way to tap into their older garagey roots, while still keeping plenty of fuzz and psych intact! The drums are great – that powerful punch that Mike Smitty Smith always brought to his earlier pop work – but the themes are moodier, and the guitar nicely trippy, while still staying tight – sometimes with a bit more strut than we ever would have expected from these guys. The album features a few surprising covers – like "California Dreamin" and "Rose Garden" – plus nice original tracks "Deep Blue Sea", "Love Sketch", "Destination Unknown", and "Don't Let Go". BrothersDon't Stop Now ... LP
RCA, 1976. Very Good- ... $8.99
Great stuff – and the kind of group that would be easy to overlook if the tracks weren't so good! The Brothers were clearly some sort of a studio project designed to cash in on the disco craze – and they included Bhen Lanzaroni on keyboards, who'd also recorded a bit on his own as a studio player. The record's not hard-hitting funk, but it does have a smooth instrumental disco sound that's got a lot of nice jazzy touches, and which never lapses into the cliches you'd expect. The band were hip enough to cover Antonio Carlos & Jocafi's classic Brazilian groover "Voce Abousou", done here with vocals on the chorus only – and they come up with some nice numbers on their own, like "Make Love", "Brothers Theme", "Don't Stop Now", and "Under The Skin". Oscar Brown's score for a hip play that he wrote (one of his many plays!) – performed by him, Sivuca, and Jean Pace. Despite the "show" quality of the material, this actually stands simply as a great Oscar Brown Jr. LP, and the production is nice and intimate, and sounds just like an ordinary studio album. Sivuca's great, and his breathy voice and playing really open up Oscar Brown with some great Brazilian touches. And as usual, the writing's great, especially on tracks like "Brown Baby", "Mother Africa's Day", "Funky World", and the great version of "Afro Blue", featuring Oscar's classic lyrics. A hip early 70s album arranged and produced by Tony Hatch – not nearly as well known as his work with Jackie Trent or Petula Clark, but still pretty darn great nonetheless! Julie's got a style that's a bit less poppy than some of her predecessors – at least not in a 60s way – and she slides out nicely here with a warm quality that's rich and full, but gets a good sense of pacing and timing from Hatch. In other hands, Budd might be a bit too over the top, or too emotive – but Tony's skill with singers really helps her find focus here, on a set of tunes that include "Touch Me", "Just Say Goodbye", "How Can I Be Sure", "West Side Apartment", "You've Got A Friend", and a remake of "Call Me". RCA, 1968. Near Mint- ... $14.99
One of the most ambitious projects ever from vibist Gary Burton – an extended piece written by Carla Bley – and billed as "A Dark Opera Without Words"! The work has a feel that's much more fluid than opera, though – and is a great instrumental outing that not only features Gary's vibes at their youthful best, with support from his quartet – but which also includes extra work from Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Gato Barbieri on tenor, and Carla Bley herself on piano. The music is never too far out, but with angular tones and strange time changes that mark the record as being quite different from Gary's other sides for RCA. It also makes the record one of his best, too – as the set has that wonderfully fresh sound that you get from early work by Bley – never too silly, and with a serious approach to composition that also never loses sight of its roots in jazz. Titles include "The New Funeral March", "Silent Spring", "Mother Of The Dead Man", "Death Rolls", and "The New National Anthem". LP, Vinyl record album

Beautiful sounds from Gary Burton – a seminal 60s session that really has the vibist coming into his own, and finding that new path towards musical expression that would flower even more strongly in the 70s! The album has Burton really strengthening up his sense of chrome – matching the boldness of other important 60s vibes players on the rise – like Karel Velebny or Bobby Hutcherson – but also working this really special magic in the way he lets each note resonate in the air – often with a much longer decay on the sound than the actual moment of its creation! Burton also plays a bit of piano on the record, overdubbed with his vibes – but in a way that's quite different than the vibes/piano combo of earlier acts – like the MJQ, or George Shearing Quintet – thanks to work from Steve Swallow on bass and Larry Bunker on percussion. Tracks include "Six Nix Quix Flix", "The Sunset Bell", "Deluge", "Chega De Saudade", and "Falling Grace". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the best later albums by Chocolate Milk – a bit different than their earlier work with Allen Toussaint, but still bouncing along in a sweet 80s groove, with more than enough traces of their roots as a funky combo! Leo Nocentelli's sitting in on guitar, adding some nice licks to keep some tracks a bit more firmly grounded in a New Orleans funk tradition, alongside some more modern production touches – and the album's got a compelling vibe that's partly pointed towards the boogie generation of the 80s, but with a heavier funk component overall! Allan Toussaint is still on hand this time around to help with both production and songwriting – and his touches can definitely be felt on the record – a tight funky undercurrent that's definitely rooted in New Orleans soul, but has some warmer, more contemporary elements too – just like that mid 70s change Toussaint was bringing to his own grooves. Standout cuts include the funky numbers "Grand Theft" and "America" – plus the groover "Girl Callin" – although there's some mellower numbers we like pretty darn well too.
