Paul DesmondComplete RCA Albums Collection (Desmond Blue/Take Ten/Bossa Antigua/Glad To Be Unhappy/Easy Living/Two Of A Mind) (6CD set) ... CD
RCA/Sony, Mid 60s. Used 6 CDs ... $33.99
Genius in one of its purest forms! Paul Desmond's alto sax was honed to perfection by the time of these recordings – worked out through fame in the Dave Brubeck Quartet years of the late 50s and early 60s, but also relaxed in a confidence that makes these sides completely majestic, and utterly fantastic! Desmond's tone and approach are languid – but in a way that's incredibly compelling: notes just floating out of the horn, almost effortlessly, seeming not to come from Desmond himself, but to him, gathered together by his warmth and good wit, honed in further by the spare and gentle guitar work of the great Jim Hall – and heard in the company of Gerry Mulligan on one album too! The package is great – with mini LP-styled cover reproductions of 60s RCA classics that include Desmond Blue, Take Ten, Bossa Antigua, Glad To Be Unhappy, Easy Living, and Two Of A Mind – with a booklet of notes, too. Jon LucienBelieve In Me – The Essential Selection – Original RCA & Columbia Recordings 1970 to 1976 ... CD
Decision, 1970s. Used ... $4.99
A wonderful compilation of some of Virgin Islands-raised soul jazz great John Lucien's better material – culled from his ever-fresh records for RCA and Columbia throughout the 70s – really incredible stuff that works it's magic every time we hear it, yet has never been particularly easy to find in print over the years, especially in the US! Lucien's island upbringing is a distinctively great part of is charm, with a breezily melodic vibe, often with some lovely string accents – always with a spirtual soul resonance carried by his charismatic voice. This 17 track snapshot of his RCA and Columbia ouvre is very nicely selected – and the titles include ncludes "Dindi", "Find Yourself A Love", "Who Will Buy", "Lady Love", "Luella", "Esperanza", "Listen Love", "World Of Joy", "Creole Lady", "You Are My Love", "Maiden Voyage"., "Rashida", "Who Will Buy?", "Motherland", "Would You Believe me", "Hello Like Before" and "War Song". Charlie RichToo Many Teardrops – The Complete Groove & RCA Recordings ... CD
RCA/Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 22.99
A great look at a really lost legacy in music from Charlie Rich – obscure sides recorded for RCA Records in the early 60s – done after his initial rush of genius on Sun Records, and before his later commercial success on Epic! Charlie's got one of the all-time great voices in pop music – a richness that easily rivals that of Memphis contemporary Elvis Presley, and which never fully got its due at the time – even though labels like RCA and Smash provided Rich with some fantastic material and production! Charlie's work for Smash has been picked up by the cognoscenti in recent years, and we'd honestly put these RCA tracks right up alongside them – with a similar Tennessee blend of soul and rock, rural and urban – all delivered by Charlie's incredibly charming vocal approach, and recorded with a depth that goes way beyond the usual RCA production modes of the time. There's plenty of currents of soul in the mix – even some New York-styled modes, which really work well with Rich – and this 40 track set is the first time this material has ever been pulled together – long-overdue, and a real treat to our ears! Titles include "Like Someone In Love", "Lady Love", "Nice & Easy", "Big Boss Man", "It's All Over Now", "The Grass Is Always Greener", "Now Everybody Knows", "My Mountain Dew", "The Big Build Up", "She Called Me Baby", "Gentleman Jim", "Christmas Greetings", "All Of My Friends Are Gonna Be Strangers", "Is Goodbye That Easy To Say", "Tragedy", "Ten Dollars & A Clean White Shirt", "Tomorrow Night", and "No Room To Dance". RCA, 1980s. Used ... $4.99
Post-Motown music from Diana Ross – cuts from the 80s years at RCA when she was really changing up her sound! The label offered Diana a lot of freedom in her music, and she used her time at the company to really try out a wide range of new sounds – some that recall her earlier years, some that lean more towards some of the more crossover soul RCA was doing at the time. Production and arrangements are by Lionel Richie, Tom Dowd, Barry Gibb, Ray Parker Jr, and others – and titles include "Muscles", "Chain Reaction", "Experience", "It's Never too Late", "Love Or Loneliness", "Missing You", "Selfish One", "Tell Me Again", "Endless Love", "It's Hard For Me To Say", "Being In Love With You", "In Your Arms", "Mirror Mirror", and "Let's Go Up". VariousRCA Groovy Songbirds ... CD
RCA (Japan), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $24.99
Sweet 60s pop from RCA Records – really special tracks that come from a time when the label was figuring out newer, groovier ways to work with some of its female vocalists – including some who'd scored bigger hits in the generation before! The package follows very strongly in the Columbia Groovy Songbirds mode – in that it firstly focuses on tunes that have a cool 60s sort of vibe – very different than the earlier pop RCA would use in the earlier part of the decade with gal singers, or in the 50s. And secondly, the package features very obscure tracks, even by big names – many of which are from 45-only releases on the label. The whole thing's overflowing with great surprises – and titles include "The Playground" by Barbara Cooper, "They Don't Know You" by Linda Scott, "I Was Only Kidding" by Ann Margaret, "Summer Sunshine" by Skeeter Davis, "Walking Down Broadway" by Betty Barnes, "But For Love" by The Angels, "If It Hadn't Been For You" by Tami Vincent, "Tell Him" by Suzi Wallis, "Thinking Through My Tears" by Peggy March, "I Can Hear The Rain" by Reparata & The Delrons, and "I Talk To Your Picture" by Lesley Miller. 26 tracks in all! Toshiko AkiyoshiKogun (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $24.99
Brilliantly bold work from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi – an artist who's really coming into her own for the 70s – stepping out in a big band format that would win her a wide new audience on both sides of the Pacific! The album's one of the first to feature the ensemble co-led with husband Lew Tabackin – a group that features strong work from American players who include Dick Spencer and Gary Foster on alto saxes, Tabackin and Tom Peterson on tenor, Bill Perkins on baritone, Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets, and Charles Loper and Jim Sawyer on trombones. The horns are only part of the picture, though – as the inventive writing and arranging from Akiyoshi is what really makes the album great – a strong sense of painting with sound, while still keeping things swinging – really unlocking all the best elements that had been opened up for larger ensembles in the previous few years. The set features all original tracks that include "Kogun", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Elegy", and "Memory". CD

A hokey title and cover, but a great little record – a lesser-known gem from the Toshiko Akioshi big band, recorded in the mid 80s for Japanese release! Toshiko's still working strongly with reedman Lew Tabackin here – and as always, the sound of the reeds really make the record – not only on the bold ensemble passages, but also on the snakey, well-crafted solos that slide out of the fuller arrangements – letting Lew, Frank Wess, and Jim Snidero contribute some really great work on the longer tracks. Titles include "Ten Gallon Shuffle", "Fading Beauty", "Blue Dream", and "Happy Hoofer" – and in case you're wondering, that's a young Monday Michiru on the cover! CD

Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandFrom Toshiko With Love (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the lesser-known albums in the great run of big band records cut by pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and reedman Lew Tabackin – and a set with a bit of a difference, too – as this time out, Tabackin wrote all the tunes, although Toshiko still handles all the arrangements and orchestrations! Some of the numbers are a bit shorter than on some of the other TALT group recordings – and it might be our imagination, but they also seem to have some more pronounced reed solos – moments that really remind us what a great saxophonist Tabackin can be, and a master of the powerful, yet understated emotional moment. Titles include "Tanuki's Night Out", "Falling Petal", "Yet Another Tear", and "A Bit Byas'd". CD

Always-amazing work from the team of pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and reedman Lew Tabackin – and a set that may well be one of the ensemble's most ambitious records to date – given that side two features a long, complicated suite that has roots in older Japanese musical styles! The balance here is great – side one has the kind of swinging shorter (although still long by most standards) numbers that the group could make explode with color and imagination – and side two features the long "Minamata" suite, which has vocals from a young Monday Michiru, and from singer Hisao Kanze. Other tracks include "Studio J", "Transience", and "Sumie" – and the lineup here features most of the group's key members of the 70s – including the great Gary Foster on reeds! CD

A fantastic live performance from this legendary ensemble – and a record that brings a nice sort of edge to the group's already great sound! It's a bit hard to describe – but somehow the live recording quality seems to create more intensity, maybe more urgency to the way the group emotionally communicates – maybe partly just the echo and open space of the recording, but also maybe the way the group seems to open up with a fresh on-the-spot energy. In addition to Toshiko Akiyoshi on piano and Lew Tabackin on reeds, the lineup features saxes from Beverly Darke, Dick Spencer, Gary Foster, and Gary Herbig; trombones from Bill Reichenbach, Charlie Loper, Phil Teele, and Rick Culver; and trumpets from Bobby Shew, Mike Price, Richard Cooper, and Steven Huffstetter. Marty Paich brings some nice jazzy charts to this early set from Ann-Margret – just the kind of hip material that made her a swinger from the start! The vocals have a sexy, breathy quality that matches Ann's tight sweater on the cover – and even when Paich grooves in an uptempo style, the lady never loses her cool – matching the leaping, jazzy instrumentation strongly with her own dynamic vocals – but never in a way that's gimmicky or poppy at all. The third album from Brian Auger & The Trinity – and the first to feature the group recording without vocals from Julie Driscoll! The sound here is just as soulful as before – a tight take on American soul jazz and funky soul of the 60s – pushed along by Auger's mighty work on the Hammond organ, and featuring (this time around) some male lead vocals, which seem to give the album an even deeper feel than earlier work! Auger's included some great covers of American tunes like "I Want To Take You Higher", "Listen Here", and "Maiden Voyage" – all redone with some great Brit beat group touches – and the album also features a great take on Faure's "Pavane", and Auger's own "Just You Just Me". Really hard-jamming work from keyboardist Brian Auger – the first of a 2-part live set from the US, and easily some of his greatest work on record! The tracks are all very long and stretched out here – an extrapolation of the territory Auger was already exploring on studio sides, taken into even more cosmic realms through the lively nature of the set. As with other records from the time, Alex Lighterwood sings on some cuts – but the real highlight is the keyboard work of Auger – served up on both organ and electric piano, and hitting a great blend of funk, fusion, and keyboard soul! Titles include a really great funky remake of "Bumpin On Sunset", the original break track "Don't Look Away", and the tunes "Truth", and "Beginning Again". LP, Vinyl record album

A mid 70s album by Bobby Bare – the ambitious, concept-driven Hard Time Hungrys – a worthy effort from one the most unique voices and personalities of his era! This album is heavy with songs written by Bare family friend and frequent songwriting partner Shel Silverstein. Johnny Cash gets all the mainstream attention for collaborating with Shel on "A Boy Named Sue", but Shel and Bare have a far richer collaborative history together. There's also some very cool use of spoken word snippets, to tie the songs together – and titles include "Hard Time Hungrys", "The Farmer Feeds Us All", "Back Home In Huntsville Again", "Bottles And Boxes", "Truck Driver, Truck Driver", "The Unemployment Line" and more. One of the most adventurous voices of the Nashville Sound era of the 60s! Bobby Bare is one of those incomparable characters who had a gaggle of big hits and a legendary stylistic range – and he STILL doesn't get all the credit he's due. Talk Me Some Sense is sort of a country-politan companion to Johnny Cash's Orange Blossom Special LP – in that it applies a country approach to the then contemporary folk song styles. Includes the tracks – "A Little Bit Later On Down The Line", "Got Leavin On Her Mind", "Long Black Veil", "All The Good Times Are Past & Gone", "You Can't Stop The Wind From Blowing", "Heaven Help My Soul", "It Ain't Me Babe" and more. In other words, what should be a gimmicky set turns out to be a surprisingly strong vehicle for Bobby's talents – which really soar out, even amidst the full productions laid down by Chet Atkins – heartbreaking vocals on tunes that include "Long Way To Tennessee", "Down In Mexico", "Sittin & Thinkin", "Lonely Town", "I Was Coming Home To You", "Long Black Limousine", and "When I'm Gone". Kathy, we'd follow you anywhere – not just for your sultry look on the cover of this album, but for your warm and wonderful vocals throughout the set! The notes describe Barr as "vibrant, vivacious, vital, and full of volcanic tenderness too" – and given the presentation of the tunes here, we'd certainly find it hard to disagree. Kathy's got a great way with a torchy mellow tune, but shines even better on some of the more uptempo numbers – scored nicely by Jerry Fielding with a slightly jazzy undercurrent that really pushes the dynamic edge in Barr's vocals. RCA/Naked Lunch (Italy), 1962. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A really landmark album in European jazz – one of those records that always tops the lists of collectors, and for good reason too! The sextet of trumpeter Oscar Valdambrini and tenorist Gianni Basso was easily one of the greatest things going in jazz on that side of the Atlantic in the early 60s – a fresh, modern group who could still play with plenty of soul – avoiding some of the cool jazz traps of other European combos, and really hitting hard with solo work that matched the best American work of the time. The sound here is really incredible – tunes that bristle with electricity from the very first note, played with a cohesiveness that makes the record far more than just a happy accident in the studio! A fantastic session of jazzy instrumental Rhumba tracks – played with lots of excellent saxophone flourishes, and a tight percussive groove that never gets to soppy. This is one of the best of the RCA Latin sides from the late 50s – and it's a no-nonsense album that features a tight larger group hitting hard Latin material without a lot of fluff. ✨✧ David BowieAladdin Sane ... LP
RCA, 1973. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". LP, Vinyl record album

Two wonderful cuts from David Bowie's Philly soul period! "Fame" is his classic collaboration with John Lennon – a tune with very wry lyrics, and a wonderfully funky groove too – one you'll recognize right away! "Right" is one that we love even more – a subtle bit of genius from that time when Bowie was recording at Sigma Sound with Luther Vandross – full of soul, and a surprisingly new deep side of his sound! Single has great images on both sides – and features a rare alternate mix of "Right". 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ David BowieHunky Dory ... LP
RCA, 1971. Very Good ... $59.99
Quite possibly David Bowie's first complete moment of genius – an incredibly-formed album that's filled with tunes beyond definition and description! There's still some traces of the earlier madman in the mix, but the overall sound is much more rock-heavy – although not without the fuzzed-up and full-on guitars of Space Oddity or Man Who Sold the World – and often augmented with a bit of strings and softer touches that really bring out the humanity in the songs. The balance here is amazing – as is the fact that a few short years before, Bowie was singing "The Laughing Gnome", but is here one of the most sensitive songwriters of his generation. Tunes are quirky and personal, and titles include "Changes", "Oh You Pretty Things", "Andy Warhol", "Life On Mars", "Kooks", and "Queen Bitch". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1980. Very Good+ ... $24.99
David Bowie back in costume at the end of the 70s – but informed enough from his Berlin trilogy that he's coming at things quite differently here! The album's a great summation of the sounds on Low, Heroes, and Lodger – taken almost back to some Ziggy Stardust and Space Oddity territory, but in ways that are a bit leaner, and more focused. Even more impressive, though, is the near-complete absence of other 1980 elements in the set – hardly any influences from punk or new wave, no post-disco dancefloor elements – just deeply unique Bowie all the way through, and proof that he could always find his own space in music when he wanted! Titles include "Up The Hill Backwards", "Teenage Wildlife", "Scream Like A Baby", "Because You're Young", "Scary Monsters", "Ashes to Ashes", "Fashion", and "Kingdom Come". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1975. Very Good+ ... $39.99
A brilliant soul album! That's right, we said SOUL album! Bowie was at the height of his Ziggy Stardust fame when this one was recorded – a drastic left-turn in styles, forged during a point in his American tour when he could take a break, head to Philly, plug in at the Sigma Sound Studios, and come up with some fantastic little soul tunes, thanks to help from Luther Vandross! The album sparkles with the best sound of Luther's early work – and you'll hear more than a bit of Luther's work on his own, and his tunes with Gregg Diamond on the set. Features the sublime tracks "Win", "Fascination", "Right", "Somebody Up There Likes Me", and "Can You Hear Me" – as well as the hits "Young Americans" and "Fame". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary BurtonGary Burton Quartet In Concert ... LP
RCA, 1968. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Groundbreaking work on vibes by Gary Burton – recorded in a setting that's live and open, yet quite groovy too! There's a rhythmic freeness that marks the set from the very first note – lessons learned from the generation of Ornette, yet taken in new direction – and definitely into new colors and tones – thanks to Burton's amazingly chromatic vibes, and the vivid guitar of Larry Coryell – not to mention the unusual rhythms from Steve Swallow on bass and Bob Moses on drums. These youthful players push the envelope even more than on some of Burton's other RCA albums of the time – going for a groove that's much more open and abstract, and which puts Coryell's guitar in a role that's as important as Burton's vibes in the set. Titles include "Wrong Is Right", "Walter L", "Lines", "The Sunset Bell", and "Blue Comedy". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary BurtonGenuine Tong Funeral ... LP
RCA, 1968. Near Mint- ... $9.99
One of the most ambitious projects ever from vibist Gary Burton – an extended piece written by Carla Bley – and billed as "A Dark Opera Without Words"! The work has a feel that's much more fluid than opera, though – and is a great instrumental outing that not only features Gary's vibes at their youthful best, with support from his quartet – but which also includes extra work from Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Gato Barbieri on tenor, and Carla Bley herself on piano. The music is never too far out, but with angular tones and strange time changes that mark the record as being quite different from Gary's other sides for RCA. It also makes the record one of his best, too – as the set has that wonderfully fresh sound that you get from early work by Bley – never too silly, and with a serious approach to composition that also never loses sight of its roots in jazz. Titles include "The New Funeral March", "Silent Spring", "Mother Of The Dead Man", "Death Rolls", and "The New National Anthem". LP, Vinyl record album

A standout classic from Gary Burton – the kind of fresh-voiced and angularly modern session that showed why his sound on the vibes was one of the most revolutionary in jazz at the time! The session features a quartet with Larry Coryell on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Bob Moses on drums – all working in a style that's got touches of modal jazz, and fragments of the Walt Dickerson sound – yet which is also a bit looser, freer, and more spacious – all without going too far "out". Titles include "Lines", "I'm Your Pal", "Fleurette Africaine", "Feelings & Things", "June The 15th, 1967", and "Good Citizen Swallow". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1966. Sealed ... $29.99
Quite an unusual session from Gary Burton – recorded in Nashville, with a mix of jazz and country session players – coming together in an open-ended sound that's got lots of complicated touches. Gary's jazz side is represented by Roy Haynes on drums, Steve Swallow on bass, and Steve Marcus on sax – and the Nashville side of things is handled by players that include Buddy Emmons, Ray Edenton, Charlie McCoy, and Chet Atkins, who duets with Burton on two spare tracks. The sound is hard to describe, but quite different from, and equally striking as, Burton's 60s albums for RCA. Titles include "Epilogue", "Alone & Forsaken", "Walter L", "I Want You", "Just Like A Woman", "Gone", "Tennessee Firebird", "Beauty Contest", and "Born To Lose". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1966. Sealed ... $14.99
Beautiful sounds from Gary Burton – a seminal 60s session that really has the vibist coming into his own, and finding that new path towards musical expression that would flower even more strongly in the 70s! The album has Burton really strengthening up his sense of chrome – matching the boldness of other important 60s vibes players on the rise – like Karel Velebny or Bobby Hutcherson – but also working this really special magic in the way he lets each note resonate in the air – often with a much longer decay on the sound than the actual moment of its creation! Burton also plays a bit of piano on the record, overdubbed with his vibes – but in a way that's quite different than the vibes/piano combo of earlier acts – like the MJQ, or George Shearing Quintet – thanks to work from Steve Swallow on bass and Larry Bunker on percussion. Tracks include "Six Nix Quix Flix", "The Sunset Bell", "Deluge", "Chega De Saudade", and "Falling Grace". LP, Vinyl record album

The first-ever album from vibist Gary Burton – a very young player at the time of recording, but one who's definitely worth the "new vibe man" promised in the title! The style here is maybe a bit more conventionally swinging than some of Burton's records from later years – a trio setting with Gene Cherico on bass and the great Joe Morello on drums – but both rhythm players are already pretty hip with their timings, and really push Burton into spacious, chromatic territory that's completely sublime – a sound that already marks the musician as really bringing something fresh to his instrument. RCA, 1960. Very Good ... $14.99
It's a little known fact that Nashville, although best remembered as a center of country music, has also given the world some pretty great jazz players – some of whom easily skirt the line between jazz and country studio work. This set's a great summation of that tradition – featuring jam session tracks by some of the city's best jazzmen at the turn of the 60s – Gary Burton, Hank Garland, Chet Atkins, Floyd Cramer, Bob Moore, Brenton Banks, and Boots Randolph. Some of the players are best known as pop instrumentalists, but open up here nicely in the album's more relaxed setting – summed up well by the tune "Relaxin", and heard over other tracks that include "Opus De Funk", "Nashville To Newport", "Round Midnight", and "Riot Chorus". RCA, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
Three-dimensional magic from the great Jimmy Castor – an artist who'd already conquered the worlds of sweet soul, heavy funk, and Latin by the time of this release! Jimmy draws on all his rich background in the soul underground, and also seems to move with a new sort of sophistication, too – not in a way that's slick or commercial, but which shows Jimmy only deepening his ideas in the era of Marvin Gaye and Isaac Hayes – going for some bigger arrangements and ambitious production, while still staying true to his groovy self! There's a vibe to the record that almost reminds us of some of the creative productions that Harvey Fuqua was doing for RCA at the same time – with New Birth and The Nite-Liters – and Jimmy's maestro seems to be Gerald Thomas, who knows how to spin just the right mood for each different track. There's even a few instrumentals, which showcase Castor's great skills on tenor – ala Stanley Turrentine in a similar mode – and tracks include "How Beautiful You Are", "Helpless", "I'm Not A Child Anymore", "The Lone Ranger", "Revelation", "Whiter Shade of Pale", and the tasty "The Last Ole", which is sort of a rumbling sinister slow funk track. One of the best later albums by Chocolate Milk – a bit different than their earlier work with Allen Toussaint, but still bouncing along in a sweet 80s groove, with more than enough traces of their roots as a funky combo! Leo Nocentelli's sitting in on guitar, adding some nice licks to keep some tracks a bit more firmly grounded in a New Orleans funk tradition, alongside some more modern production touches – and the album's got a compelling vibe that's partly pointed towards the boogie generation of the 80s, but with a heavier funk component overall! Titles include "Let's Go All The Way", "Like My Lady's Love", "Honey Bun", "Running On Empty", "Blue Jeans", and a version of Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long". Milky Way is tight, funky, and plenty groovy – a set that has Chocolate Milk sounding a lot smoother than at their start, but still pretty darn great overall! Allan Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn are still around to help the group on production, but the sound is more LA than New Orleans – a well-crafted set of grooves that almost seems to have the group's Crescent City roots shaking hands with the sunnier sound of California soul in the late 70s. That latter aspect adds in some nice jazzy touches – ala Fantasy Records – and almost gives the record a Wayne Henderson-styled groove at points, especially on some of the mellow steppers and midtempo numbers.
