Faith Hope & CharityFaith Hope & Charity (RCA) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $9.99
Sweet 70s soul from Faith Hope & Charity – a trio who had recorded previously, but who really burst out here at the start of the disco years with some strong studio help from the great Van McCoy! The style of the record isn't really disco, but isn't far off either – as McCoy mixes lively rhythms and soaring strings with the vocal interplay of the trio – who come off much more as a well-formed soul group than some of the other trios of the generation – who were often just doing chorus vocals for the grooves! Singer Brenda Hillard really soars at times – with a lead that sets fire to the tracks nicely – and titles include the classic "Find a Way", plus "Just One Look", "Disco Dan", "Rescue Me", "Little Bit Of Love", "Don't Go Looking For Love", and "To Each His Own". CD features bonus single mixes of "Find a Way", "Don't Go Looking For Love", and "To Each His Own". CD

Peggy MarchIf You Loved Me – RCA Recordings From Around The World 1963 to 1969 ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $9.99
Peggy March is a singer with a surprisingly varied career – an artist that most folks know for only her early little girl pop fame – but one who went onto record a very unusual range of sounds as the 60s moved on! RCA was her label, and while she never hit the heights of the charts after her early hit, the company was more than committed to allowing Peggy's sound to grow and flourish – especially on the international scene, where she not only recorded tracks in other languages, but also picked up new non-American songs, and served up very cool English-language versions! This set really does a great job of moving past the early stuff, and looking at this lost later legacy of March's music – sounds that we'd easily compare to the hipper 60s material by Jackie DeShannon, even though Peggy didn't write her own material. The range of studio talents really keeps things interesting – there's even one track arranged by Ennio Morricone – and titles include "He's Back Again", "If You Loved Me", "He Couldn't Care Less", "Watch What You Do With My Baby", "Johnny Cool", "Kilindini Docks", "Eh Bravo", "Passo Su Passo", "Too Long Away", "Wasurenaiwa", "Ne Joue Pas Les Enfants", "He Couldn't Care Less", "This Heart Wasn't Made To Kick Around", "Can't Stop Thinkin About Him", and "Fool Fool Fool". ZulemaJust Can't Say Goodbye – The Best Of The RCA Years ... CD
RCA/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
A killer overview of the RCA years of Zulema Cusseaux – a heck of a great singer, and one who worked with some excellent styles during her 70s years in soul! Zulema's got a slightly righteous approach to her music – a style schooled in the deep soul of her Floria roots, but focused on some tighter, groovier charts here – thanks to top-shelf work from studio talents like Bert DeCoteaux, Leon Pendarvis, and Van McCoy – all of whom bring a really special sort of magic to these sides! Zulema's got the kind of voice that might have faltered if given the wrong direction – but here, it really takes off – especially given the excellent choices in the collection, which nicely avoids some of the few mis-steps on Zulema's fuller albums. 19 tracks in all – including "Standing In The Back Row Of Your Heart", "I Love You Baby", "Pity For The Children", "You Had To Know", "Half Of Your Heart", "It Will Never Be The Same Again", "Why Did It Have To End This Way", and "Love To Last Forever". ✨✧ Eddy ArnoldComplete RCA Victor Christmas Recordings ... CD
RCA/Real Gone, 1960s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Warm sounds for the Holiday season – a double-length set of Christmas tunes, sung by the great Eddy Arnold! Eddy recorded most of these numbers at a time when he was at the height of his countrypolitan talents – able to croon a tune with a smooth, mellow approach that almost made him the Perry Como of the country world – although set up with more of a Nasvhille vibe, thanks to producer Chet Atkins! The match of Atkins and Arnold is one of the all-time greats in mid-century pop – and the duo seem to push themselves even more strongly on this seasonal material. The CD features the full 1961 Christmas album recorded by Eddie, plus loads more Holiday singles – most of which have never been collected before. 26 titles in all – with tracks that include "Christmas Can't Be Far Away", "White Christmas", "Up On The Housetop", "Will Santa Come To Shanty Town", "Jingle Bell Rock", "Christmas", "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day", "Silent Night", "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas", "Winter Wonderland", "The Angel & The Stranger", and "New Year's Greeting". Great early work from arranger Manny Album – Manny's entry in RCA's Jazz Workshop series – a set of tunes that are shorter, and arguably a bit more modern than some of his later work – tracks done definitely in that Jazz Workshop blend of west coast cool and east coast modern – with players that include Bob Brookmeyer, Nick Travis, Urbie Green, Billy Byers, Hal McKusick, Al Cohn, and Thad Jones. Titles include the Albam originals "Headstrong", "The Changing Scene", "The Turning Point", and "Intermezzo" – plus "Charmaine", "Royal Garden Blues", and "Anything Goes". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredibly groovy group – with a sound that's like a 70s take on the Sergio Mendes groove, all touched up with electric instrumentation on keyboards and guitars, but with a breezy vocal approach and some tight post-bossa rhythms! The group perform versions of some of the best Brazilian groove tracks of the late 60s and early 70s – like "Sonho", "Dia 4 Dezembro", "Pais Tropical", "Feitinha Para O Poeta", "Nada Sera Como Antes", and "Agua De Beber" – all laid out with a tasty bit of electric funky jazz, and some warm production that gives the cuts a heck of a lot of soul! Ataraxia (Mort Garson)Unexplained – Electronic Musical Impressions of the Occult ... CD
RCA/Rubellan (Germany), 1975. Used ... $11.99
One of the spookiest albums we've ever heard from moog maestro Mort Garson – way darker and more complex than his Wozzard Of Id or moogy horoscope projects – with a feel that's much more like his legendary Black Mass album! Like that one, there's a fair current of supernatural running through the mix – an early use of the electronics to explore the darker corners of reality, served up with lots of cool 70s occult touches – in a way that's oddly more timeless than some of the later projects of this nature from the industrial generation. Garson's range of tones is wonderful – from fuzzy bassy bits, to sparkling keyboard lines, to lots of spacey sounds in between – and titles include "I Ching", "Tarot", "Deja Vu", "Seance", "Sorcerer", and "Astral Projection". RCA, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $4.99
Chet Atkins is groovin, but in a yesterday sort of way – hence the title of this sweet set from the start of the 70s! The record still has plenty of that excellent Atkins guitar work right up front in the mix – picking and strumming with the sublime sound that Chet created in the Nashville studios of RCA – in a mode that's maybe got some even jazzier currents on the guitar at times than some of his previous records – an upfront quality to the way the instrument steps up in the mix, especially on some of the more contemporary numbers. Titles include the slightly funky "Tennessee Pride", plus "Bring Me Sunshine", "Country Champagne", "Steeplechase Lane", "Yestergroovin", "Liberty", and "Gotta Travel On". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1973. Sealed ... $19.99
Funky rocking sounds from this hip Spanish group – with a bit of a tribal sound that's pretty sweet! The bass is pretty thundering, the drums are strong, and there's some cool piano and flute in the mix that give the cuts a bit of a Latin flourish. Most cuts have vocals, kind of in a rock-sounding mode – but the instrumentation is mostly funky all the way, and the album fits in well next to early 70s records by groups like War or some of their LA cronies. Titles include "The Horse", "Keep On Moving", "You Know", "Casanova", "Mr Money", and "Children". LP, Vinyl record album

A couple of the biggest, funkiest early 70s jams by legendary Spanish combo Barrabas – masters at a wild mix of funk, soul, and rock at this early point – with a raw, percussion heavy grit underneath soulful vocal and funky rhythms! "Wild Safari" works on a few different levels. Starting with steady, stripped down percussion, building with gritty lead and soul chant backing vocals before hitting the unforgettable, floor shaking chorus, then breaking down and doing it again – all the more thrilling on repeat! "Woman" ratchets up the funky guitar groove on the equally tremendous flipside. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Less of a full-on soundtrack by Bowie than a collection of work from some of his best albums of the mid and late 70s – pulled together to provide a musical backdrop for the film Christiane F! The versions here are supposedly alternate ones, but we're thinking that's just hype – because they sound pretty darn close to the album versions. But that's ok with us, because the tunes are all great – well-chosen work pulled from the incredible stretch that includes Bowie's legendary Berlin trilogy. One of the three great collaborations between David Bowie and Brian Eno – and possibly the ultimate statement from his years in Berlin! The album's got some tunes that still show some of the guitar power of the early 70s Bowie – but it's also got some of the beautiful spacier moments brought forward on Low – and which are every bit the Brian Eno of Another Green World. The balance is beautiful – stark and dark on one half, then airy and spacious on the next – handled without any sense of gimmickry, and a bold mainstream experiment that still resonates strongly today. The Thin White Duke turns to the east – and gets a whole new sound with help from Brian Eno! The album is an amazing departure from some of David Bowie's previous work – a set that's sparer, more spacious, and which is often instrumental – quite a statement, given Bowie's reputation as a songwriter at the time! It's almost like Bowie's shaking off all the confused stardom of the previous parts of the 70s – and is stepping forward as a new being from a new space – cleaner, leaner, and simpler than before – but hardly evacuated of soul at all, certainly not as much as you might guess from the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. David BowieSpace Oddity ... LP
RCA, 1969. Very Good+ ... $24.99
An amazing departure for David Bowie – hardly the kind of record you would expect from his oboe-filled tunes of a few years before – and really the start of the groundbreaking, earthshaking, reinventionist era of his genius! There's a spacious, soaring quality to Space Oddity that's every bit the kind of magical music you might hope for in a set recorded at the close of the 60s – a shift into new modes, new sounds that seem to suck up all the best influences in rock from the previous few years, but fuse it into a new cosmic vision for the next decade. And while others might stumble on cliche with the weight of such a task, Bowie pulls it off brilliantly – mixing his fuzzier feelings with some of his more personal leanings – and showcasing a newly deep sense of songwriting here that's really amazing. Some tunes have the sensitivity of work on Hunky Dory, while others burn with the fire of Man Who Sold The World – all in a balance that never sounds schizophrenic at all. Groovy vocal pop from Brazil – an unusual group with a mellow harmony sound – one gal and five guys, gently singing together over some light arrangements of American and Brazilian pop tunes! The style of the record is different than work by other Brazilian harmony combos of the 60s – and at times, almost has a slightly psychedelic edge to it, thanks to a nice use of organ on the record, and a decidedly hippiesque quality to the voice of the female singer. The album features great versions of "Roda De Samba", "Light My Fire", "I Say A Little Prayer", and "Summer Rain" – plus the cuts "I Love You", "Estou Aqui", "Viento Dile A La Lluvia", and "Tomorrow's Love". One of the few albums ever cut by the team of Octavio Burnier and Claudio Cartier – a mid 70s Brazilian duo with a sweet and soulful finish! Both Burnier and Cartier play guitar – but not in a spare, Baden Powell-like way. Instead, they've got a sound that's very full – touched with much of the Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s, and given a smooth electric finish that makes for some very nice grooves. The guitar work is excellent – jamming away on tracks that also sport keyboards, electric bass, and vocals by a variety of singers – including Roberto Quartin, Alberto Arantes, Sonia Burnier, and Jaime Luiz. Hardly the kind of country roads you'd find traveled by other musicians – as Gary Burton's sound here is incredibly fresh – still as groundbreaking now as it was back in the 60s! The title might be a reference to Burton's Nashville roots, and the music does have a slightly pastoral vibe – but the overall execution is extremely modern, and filled with the kind of bold tones and sharp turns that always made Burton so wonderful at the start! The group includes Jerry Hahn on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – all very freewheeling, open players – with an equal balance between rhythm and melody. Burton, Swallow, and Hahn composed a good many of the tracks – and titles include "A Singing Song", "Wichita Breakdown", "Country Roads", "The Green Mountains", "True Or False", and "Gone But Forgotten". Jimmy CastorDimension III ... CD
RCA/Vocalion (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $9.99
Three-dimensional magic from the great Jimmy Castor – an artist who'd already conquered the worlds of sweet soul, heavy funk, and Latin by the time of this release! Jimmy draws on all his rich background in the soul underground, and also seems to move with a new sort of sophistication, too – not in a way that's slick or commercial, but which shows Jimmy only deepening his ideas in the era of Marvin Gaye and Isaac Hayes – going for some bigger arrangements and ambitious production, while still staying true to his groovy self! There's a vibe to the record that almost reminds us of some of the creative productions that Harvey Fuqua was doing for RCA at the same time – with New Birth and The Nite-Liters – and Jimmy's maestro seems to be Gerald Thomas, who knows how to spin just the right mood for each different track. There's even a few instrumentals, which showcase Castor's great skills on tenor – ala Stanley Turrentine in a similar mode – and tracks include "How Beautiful You Are", "Helpless", "I'm Not A Child Anymore", "The Lone Ranger", "Revelation", "Whiter Shade of Pale", and the tasty "The Last Ole", which is sort of a rumbling sinister slow funk track. One of the best later albums by Chocolate Milk – a bit different than their earlier work with Allen Toussaint, but still bouncing along in a sweet 80s groove, with more than enough traces of their roots as a funky combo! Leo Nocentelli's sitting in on guitar, adding some nice licks to keep some tracks a bit more firmly grounded in a New Orleans funk tradition, alongside some more modern production touches – and the album's got a compelling vibe that's partly pointed towards the boogie generation of the 80s, but with a heavier funk component overall! Titles include "Let's Go All The Way", "Like My Lady's Love", "Honey Bun", "Running On Empty", "Blue Jeans", and a version of Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long". Wicked funk from Chocolate Milk – and a set that perfectly combines their deep New Orleans roots with the tighter sound the Crescent City was brewing up in the mid 70s! The group work closely here with producer Allen Toussaint – and really show that stronger use of studio technology that Toussaint was perfecting at the time – a mode used famously in work for bigger artists, but which is totally perfect here to bring an even greater focus to the sound of the group! There's loads of sharp-stepping basslines and drums at the bottom, mixed with a cool compressed sound at the top – a way of being a bit smooth, yet still pretty darn funky all the way through. The mellower cuts are especially great – never sleepy, but slow grooving in a really badass way – and titles include "Comin", "Do Onto Others", "Starbright", "Feel the Need", and "Something New". A classic live album – one of the first in soul music, and a beautiful set of smooth soul tunes from Sam Cooke! Sam's singing at the high-end nitespot The Copacabana – and like many live sets performed there, this one's tailored a bit to the classy crowd at the show – but that doesn't stop him from using his voice to perfection, sweetly crafting beautiful lines on a batch of standards given the soul treatment, plus a few of Sam's own hits. And sure, it's easy to criticize this album after the release of the Live At The Harlem Square album in the mid 80s – which was recorded a year earlier, but rejected by RCA in favor of this album's crossover potential – but keep in mind that for most folks who didn't grow up with the hindsight of reissues, this album was all they had, and it still had quite an impact in the soul market.
