Louis ArmstrongComplete Louis Armstrong Columbia & RCA Victor Studio Sessions 1946 to 1966 (7CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, Late 40s/1950s/1960s. New Copy 7CD ... $118.99 119.00
A stunning overview of these two key slices of work from Louis Armstrong – material recorded for RCA Records in the mid 40s, and then his huge Columbia Records comeback sides in the 50s – the latter of which is presented here with a huge amount of unissued material and alternate tracks! The RCA work starts out the set – 78rpm material that includes both larger groups and small combos – including his All Stars and Hot Seven groups, as well as a 1946 Esquire Award Winners session. Columbia material begins in 1954 – and returns to some key all-star groups with some of Louie's best sidemen of the decade – on sessions supervised by George Avakian and Teo Macero, each of whom bring out a different quality in Armstrong's talents. In addition to all the 78rpm singles and unissued tracks, the sessions also feature material that appeared on the records Louis Armstrong Plays WC Handy, Satch Plays Fats, The Real Ambassadors, Louis Armstrong Plays The Blues, and the unusual Book Of The Month Club album set of Rare & Unreleased performances. The set features a massive 141 tracks in all – and one of the biggest booklets of notes we've ever seen with a Mosaic set! CD
(Limited to 3500 copies.)

Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersBest Of The Columbia & RCA/Vik Years 1956 to 1959 ... CD
Sony/Real Gone, Late 50s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 19.99
A nice collection of overlooked work from Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – not the oft-reissued material from the group's years at Blue Note, but instead some slightly more obscure sides recorded for Columbia and RCA! The work here also represents a time when Blakey was experimenting a bit more with the group – a stretch right before he settled into some of the more-recorded groups with Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, and Bobby Timmons – but still had a great ear for important younger talent! Players here include Bill Hardman, Donald Byrd, and Lee Morgan on trumpets; Jackie McLean on alto; Johnny Griffin, Hank Mobley, and Benny Golson on tenor; and Horace Silver and Sam Dockery on piano! The set includes material from the albums Hard Bop, Drum Suite, Jazz Messengers, Night In Tunisia, and some of the French-only live recordings that Blakey did for RCA in the late 50s – and the set features 16 tracks that include "Nica's Dream", "Evidence", "Blues March For Europe No 1", "Along Came Manon", "Lester Left Town", "Night In Tunisia (live)", "Moanin With Hazel", "Night In Tunisia (take 3)", "Ecaroh", "Cubano Chant", "Almost Like Being In Love", "The Sacrifie", and "Couldn't It Be You (take 4)". Gary BurtonGenuine Tong Funeral (RCA Master) ... LP
RCA (France), 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
One of the most ambitious projects ever from vibist Gary Burton – an extended piece written by Carla Bley – and billed as "A Dark Opera Without Words"! The work has a feel that's much more fluid than opera, though – and is a great instrumental outing that not only features Gary's vibes at their youthful best, with support from his quartet – but which also includes extra work from Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Gato Barbieri on tenor, and Carla Bley herself on piano. The music is never too far out, but with angular tones and strange time changes that mark the record as being quite different from Gary's other sides for RCA. It also makes the record one of his best, too – as the set has that wonderfully fresh sound that you get from early work by Bley – never too silly, and with a serious approach to composition that also never loses sight of its roots in jazz. Titles include "The New Funeral March", "Silent Spring", "Mother Of The Dead Man", "Death Rolls", and "The New National Anthem". LP, Vinyl record album

ExcitersSoul Motion – The Complete Bang, Shout, & RCA Recordings 1966 to 1969 ... CD
Bang/Shout/RCA/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Incredible work by The Exciters – material we totally love to death, most of which is a lot harder-hitting than the group's earlier hits in the 60s! The package pulls together their post-UA recordings for the Bang, Shout, and RCA labels – the first to of which are represented by singles, the last by a full LP and some great extra material from 45s – all of which is really incredible stuff that moves way past any pop soul expectations you may have! Production is by Bert Berns on the non-RCA material, and Larry Banks on the RCA sides – and both producers bring an incredibly hip sound to the recordings, mixing the unique deep soul lead of Brenda Reid with some very groovy backings – arranged by Artie Butler, George Patterson, and Teacho Wiltshire, all of whom bring something unique to the mix. The force of these sides is amazing – almost a revolution in female soul, captured in the history of one group – and the booklet features very full notes on the girls, culled from interviews, and telling the story of their legendary years in the 60s. CD contains all of the legendary Caviar & Chitlins LP, plus lots of singles – 21 tracks that include "Take One Step I'll Take Two", "Soul Motion", "Number One", "A Little Bit Of Soap", "Number One", "You Don't Know What You're Missing", "Blowing Up My Mind", "Movin Too Slow", "Turn Me On", "A Year Ago", "You Got Me", "Always", "Fight That Feelin", "Give It All", and "Weddings Make Me Cry". ✨✧ Evelyn Champagne KingEvelyn Champagne King – The RCA Albums 1977 to 1985 (8CD set) ... CD
RCA/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 8CD ... $44.99 65.98
A massive collection of music – eight full albums from Evelyn Champagne King, plus bonus tracks as well! King was a hell of a singer who came along at just the right time – as cool and classy enough to have sung jazz in decades before, but with a richness that also really fit the spirit of 70s soul – and was perfect for the new infusion of grooves that the music got during the disco generation! King could sing disco, but also hit a lot wider range too – which made for some really well-formed records during her years at RCA – all of which are collected here! Unlike some of her crossover contemporaries, Evelyn managed to grow with the years and stay strong as the 80s moved in – shifting styles a bit, but never losing her groove – and working here with production and arrangements from the likes of T Life, Kashif, Willie Lester, Morrie Brown, Andre Cymone, and Leon Sylvers – all of whom help shape the groove. The box features the full albums Smooth Talk, Music Box, Call On Me, I'm In Love, Get Loose, Face To Face, So Romantic, and A Long Time Coming – nearly all of which are presented with bonus tracks – all wrapped up in a box set, with a 40 page booklet of notes. That's a country-looking Mike Nesmith on the cover – which is no surprise, as these cuts were all recorded during Nesmith's great early 70s country rock years on RCA – although none of them were issued at the time! Those in the know love Mike's fantastic records with The First National Band – done after his time in The Monkees, at a time when he was really letting his hair down and his songwriting skills flow – to a point where he was joining the hipper country-inspired world of The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds! Those modes are in full flourish here – in a set that features 16 vocal numbers from the RCA years, including many rare alternates – and 8 more instrumentals, which show the wonderful use of pedal steel from Red Rhodes, and some of the other hip players on the sessions. Titles include "American Airman", "Six Days On The Road", and "Circle Sky" – plus rare alternates of "Some Of Shelly's Blues", "Marie's Theme", "Roll With The Flow", "Different Drum", "Tengo Amore", "Dedicated Friend", "Texas Morning", "Rene", "Listen To The Band", and other vocal tunes – some in very different arrangements. Instrumental tunes include "Hollywood", "Tan My Hide", "You Are My One", "Born To Love You", and "Magnolia Simms" – and the set also features a bonus "Loose Salute" radio spot too! CD

RCA/Bluebird, 1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A reissue of one of Blakey's best non-Blue Note sides from the late 50s, a killer album that sports a great lineup of the Jazz Messengers that included Jackie McLean, Johnny Griffin, Bill Hardman, Sam Dockery and Spanky DeBrest. The three of them sparkle and shine with the sort of brilliance that Blakey's leadership brings to the group, and they wail their way through a 13 minute long reading of "Night In Tunisia", with excellent solos all around, and the other cuts "Theory Of Art", "Couldn't It Be You?", "Evans", and "Off The Wall". This reissue adds the bonus numbers "Social Call" and "A Night At Tony's" recorded for RCA at very nearly the same time, but with a larger group that features Wynton Kelly in place of Sam Dockery, plus the addition of Lee Morgan, Sahib Shihab, Melba Liston and Cecil Payne in the horn section. RCA/Collectables, Mid 60s. Used ... $14.99
Two lost spy soundtracks on one CD – both of them pretty darn rare, and pretty darn great! The Saint was Roger Moore's first big claim to fame, and Secret Agent starred a young Patrick McGoohan in his years before The Prisoner – and both shows features music by Edwin Astley, in keeping with the British origin of the programs, done in a cool 60s spy mode that's halfway between John Barry and Lalo Schifrin! The work on the set is great – a real treat to discover, and filled with fresh touches that put Astley right up there with all the other 60s spy greats in our book. RCA/Sacred Bones, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 22.98
One of the spookiest albums we've ever heard from moog maestro Mort Garson – way darker and more complex than his Wozzard Of Id or moogy horoscope projects – with a feel that's much more like his legendary Black Mass album! Like that one, there's a fair current of supernatural running through the mix – an early use of the electronics to explore the darker corners of reality, served up with lots of cool 70s occult touches – in a way that's oddly more timeless than some of the later projects of this nature from the industrial generation. Garson's range of tones is wonderful – from fuzzy bassy bits, to sparkling keyboard lines, to lots of spacey sounds in between – and titles include "I Ching", "Tarot", "Deja Vu", "Seance", "Sorcerer", and "Astral Projection". Bobby BareDetroit City & Other Hits/500 Miles From Home/Talk Me Some Sense/Bird Named Yesterday (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Four gems from the early RCA years of Bobby Bare – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Detroit City – a classic early album from the great Bobby Bare – proof that the man had plenty of charms in the years before he started working with hip singer/songwriter material! The set kicks off with the huge title cut – a track that Bobby does better than just about anyone else – and it follows with a host of well-chosen cuts and some surprisingly great originals – showing an early songwriting side of Bare that didn't always get exposure in later years! Bobby's got a great edge in his vocals, even young – less of the pop modes that you'd hear on some of his singles – on titles that include "Shame On Me", "Detroit City", "Is It Wrong", "Dear Wastebasket", "The Gods Were Angry With Me", "Book Of Love", and "I Don't Believe I'll Fall In Love Today". 500 Miles is early genius from Bobby Bare – a set that shows just how great he was at the start – able to bring a special spin to a country tune, even amidst some of the fuller Chet Atkins production at RCA! Bobby's got a very unique style – maybe more urban than you might expect, but still with a twang – a quality that always made him perfect for songs of moving and longing, as in the title cut. There's plenty of other numbers in that mode, too – including a few penned by Bobby himself – in a lineup that includes "Let Me Tell You about Mary", "Abilene", "Worried Man Blues", "Sailor Man", "Homestead On The Farm", "Gotta Travel On", "500 Miles From Home", and "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight". Talk Me Some Sense is wonderful work from Bobby Bare – a record that already shows the young singer reaching for hip material, and coming up with a mature way of putting over a tune that's unlike anyone else! There's some slight currents of folk in the music – but as with the early John Hartford records on RCA, the style is more country overall – but also in a very different space too – inheriting some of the hipper inflections of the changing 60s, even amidst familiar RCA production – which puts a really special spin on all the tunes. Titles include "A Little Bit Later On Down The Line", "Got Leavin On Her Mind", "Long Black Veil", "All The Good Times Are Past & Gone", "You Can't Stop The Wind From Blowing", "Heaven Help My Soul", "It Ain't Me Babe", and the great original "Passin Through". Bird Named Yesterday is one of the coolest Bobby Bare albums of the 60s – a precursor to some of his concept albums of the 70s, but done in a bit of a different mode too! Bobby delivers these little recitations between most of the tunes – speaking in different characters, but in a way that evokes some of the larger spirit that Lee Hazlewood brought to his projects of the period – a quality that's also echoed in the way that Bare puts over a tune – mature, and with a nice sense of distance that brings about a slight current of wit – quite unusual for RCA country at the time! The set includes some great tunes by a young Jack Clement – and titles include "Somebody Bought My Old Hometown", "The Air Conditioner Song", "The Day The Saw Mill Closed Down", "Bird Named Yesterday", "The Old Gang's Gone", and "They Covered Up The Old Swimmin Hole". Bonus tracks include "The Town That Broke My Heart", "Don't Do Like I Done Son", "Sandy's Crying Again", and "When Am I Ever Gonna Settle Down". CD

Johnny Cash gets all the mainstream attention for collaborating with Shel on "A Boy Named Sue", but Shel and Bare have a far richer collaborative history together. The Winners And Other Losers is simply a great batch of tunes, sans concept, with the enduring "Drop Kick Me Jesus", "My Better Half", "Keeping Rosie Proud Of Me" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

BarrabasBarrabas – Musica Caliente (aka Wild Safari) ... LP
RCA/Sommor (Spain), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
Wonderful work from Barrabas – a hip Spanish group of the 70s who effortlessly blend together elements of funk, rock, and soul – at a level that made them surprisingly big on this side of the Atlantic too! Maybe part of the strength of their fame was that over here, the group were never pictured on the cover – so they fit right in the record racks with other funk records of the time – as they serve up a wild safari of grooves that's almost in a sort of party mode, with the band jamming on congas, organ, and guitars! The vocals trade back nicely between the lead singer and the ensemble in a soulful mode that shows that everyone was paying attention – and the best tracks have a tight groove with choppy guitar and driving conga, almost in an LA Chicano funk mode. Titles include "Woman", "Never In This World", "Wild Safari", and "Chicco". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Aaron BellAfter The Party's Over ... LP
RCA, 1958. Very Good+ ... $14.99
An obscure 50s session from bassist Aaron Bell – one of the player's few dates as a leader, cut at a time when he was working in Duke Ellington's group of the decade! As with some of Duke's other bassists, Bell's got a strongly pronounced tone – one that came through great in big group setting, and which really shines even more here – working in a mostly piano trio setting, and coming across with a good sense of bounce and soul. The album features Bell in a few different groups – with players who include Hank Jones or Charlie Bateman on piano, Ed Thigpen or Elvin Jones on drums, and a bit of extra trombone from Tyree Glenn. Bell even plays a bit of added tuba on a few tunes – using the instrument in a way that's not too different from his bass – and titles include "After The Party Blues", "Cool", "Party Blues", "Kumquat", "All The Way", "Love Nest", and a 2-part version of "Satin Doll". RCA, 1966. Very Good+ ... $19.99
The groovy groovy soundtrack to the first Matt Helm film – starring Dean Martin as a 60s master of intrigue! Elmer Bernstein handled the soundtrack with a really great approach – jazz, swinging, and with plenty of mod 60s bits – very much in some of the same territory as Lalo Schifrin or Hugo Montenegro at the time! And equally great, the record also includes a few great vocal tracks by Vikki Carr – "The Silencers" and "Santiago" – both of which are very groovy numbers that swing with a wonderfully cheesy sort of sound! Other tracks are instrumentals, and titles include include "Tun Tzee", "Tina's Waltz", "Matt Helm's Blues", and "Early To Bed". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/Get On Down, 1989. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The rare, late 80s gem from Black Rock & Ron – dedicated to and featuring production by the late, great Paul C McKasty – along with some production by Jazzy Jay and Skeff Anselm. You can hear Paul C's influence in the edits, the tightness of the beats and the layering and chopping of the samples, which definitely pushes this set to higher level. The rhymes are impressive, too – especially in the heavier, rawer and harder hitting tracks. Solid duo rap and tight production from the Hollis, Queens crew. Titles include 'You Can't Do Me None", "Black Is The Word", "That's How I'm Livin'", "Getting Large", "I'm Tired", "3 Brothers And Yvonne", "Rap Life", "Act Like You Know" and "Black, Rock & Ron (video mix)". 15 tracks in all. RCA, 1970. Very Good ... $9.99
A wickedly wonderful record from Luiz Bonfa – one that has his bossa-inflected guitar style supported by larger arrangements by Marty Manning. The feel is kind of bossa meets 60s easy meets early CTI – as Manning's work reminds us a lot of the larger orchestrations penned by Don Sebesky or Claus Ogerman at the end of the 60s, a perfect foil for the tighter guitar work of Bonfa – making the album one of the best showcases of his style from the time! Tracks include "Helicopter 274", "Window Girl", "Peixe Bom", "Salvador", and "Africana" – and the record sounds like a lost 70s Italian soundtrack! LP, Vinyl record album

The second great entry in the Changes series from David Bowie – and, like the first, a well-chosen array of tracks that really get at his creative genius as a pop star – which includes a few great titles from his post-Berlin years! The set does a great job of spanning the 70s – and includes the single-only "John I'm Only Dancing (Again)" – which is a clubbier take on the earlier song that was showcased on Changes One. Other tracks run from the Ziggy years onward – and include another great single, Bowie's take on "Oh You Pretty Things" – which was more famously recorded by Mott The Hoople, although written by Bowie – plus "Aladdin Sane", "Starman", "1984", "Ashes To Ashes", "Sound & Vision", "Fashion", "Wild Is The Wind", and "DJ". The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! A key blend of two chapters in David Bowie's career – his guitar-heavy groove with the Spiders From Mars, and his 60s roots in mod London! The tracks here all date from the mid 60s, and are Bowie's homage to that period in his life – but they're all played with a glammish 70s sensibility, and some definite Ziggy Stardust elements in the way the guitars come into the mix. Given Bowie's rise as a key songwriter of his time, the step back to an album of all covers is a surprising, but genius move – and the execution of the tunes here comes off brilliantly – with plenty of personal spirit that keeps them from being simple rehashes of hits! A tremendous live set cut during the height of David Bowie's years in Berlin – and the kind of performance that showed that his more experimental work from this time could be every bit as appealing as the classics! The first half of the set features some amazing numbers from the Heroes and Low years – presented here with some darker orchestrations that sound really wonderful, and which slightly recast the styles of the tunes on the albums. The second half mixes in some older classics with a few surprising bits – making for the kind of "star appeal" that must have been welcome to more mainstream Bowie fans during these more obscure years. 17 tracks in all – including "Beauty & The Beast", "Breaking Glass", "Speed Of Life", "What In The World", "Heroes", "Warszawa", "Soul Love", "Star", "Art Decade","Fame", "TVC 15", and "Ziggy Stardust". Groundbreaking work on vibes by Gary Burton – recorded in a setting that's live and open, yet quite groovy too! There's a rhythmic freeness that marks the set from the very first note – lessons learned from the generation of Ornette, yet taken in new direction – and definitely into new colors and tones – thanks to Burton's amazingly chromatic vibes, and the vivid guitar of Larry Coryell – not to mention the unusual rhythms from Steve Swallow on bass and Bob Moses on drums. These youthful players push the envelope even more than on some of Burton's other RCA albums of the time – going for a groove that's much more open and abstract, and which puts Coryell's guitar in a role that's as important as Burton's vibes in the set. Hardly the kind of country roads you'd find traveled by other musicians – as Gary Burton's sound here is incredibly fresh – still as groundbreaking now as it was back in the 60s! The title might be a reference to Burton's Nashville roots, and the music does have a slightly pastoral vibe – but the overall execution is extremely modern, and filled with the kind of bold tones and sharp turns that always made Burton so wonderful at the start! The group includes Jerry Hahn on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – all very freewheeling, open players – with an equal balance between rhythm and melody. RCA/Get On Down, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
A wicked lost album of righteous funk and poetic knowledge from the great Gary Byrd! Gary began his life as a soul DJ in New York, but by the early 70s, he was using his rich voice to create recordings designed to educate as much as entertain. That said, the album is as funky as it is strident, and innovatively soulful – it's got raw and heavy drums and horns the burst in, but there's also roomier, slinkier grooves created to frame Byrd's voice and mood. The arrangements are by Chico O'Farrill and he really delivers. Gary Byrd's storytelling and spoken delivery leads the way, though – righteousness without bitterness, angry yet agreeable – truly brilliant and unique work! Titles include "To You Beautiful Black Sister", "If The People Only Knew (Power To The People)", "Shining Black Prince", "Country Preacher", and "How Long My People" and more. Three-dimensional magic from the great Jimmy Castor – an artist who'd already conquered the worlds of sweet soul, heavy funk, and Latin by the time of this release! Jimmy draws on all his rich background in the soul underground, and also seems to move with a new sort of sophistication, too – not in a way that's slick or commercial, but which shows Jimmy only deepening his ideas in the era of Marvin Gaye and Isaac Hayes – going for some bigger arrangements and ambitious production, while still staying true to his groovy self! There's a vibe to the record that almost reminds us of some of the creative productions that Harvey Fuqua was doing for RCA at the same time – with New Birth and The Nite-Liters – and Jimmy's maestro seems to be Gerald Thomas, who knows how to spin just the right mood for each different track. There's even a few instrumentals, which showcase Castor's great skills on tenor – ala Stanley Turrentine in a similar mode – and tracks include "How Beautiful You Are", "Helpless", "I'm Not A Child Anymore", "The Lone Ranger", "Revelation", "Whiter Shade of Pale", and the tasty "The Last Ole", which is sort of a rumbling sinister slow funk track. A classic session in the tried and true marketing style of "East Coast vs West Coast" jazz, with one side of tracks by a group led by Al Cohn, and featuring Gene Quill, Hal McKusick, and Joe Newman. The other side's got Shorty Rogers representin' on the West Coast, with Jimmy Giuffre, Zoot Sims, Bud Shank, and Shelly Manne. The album's a nice batch of tracks, in the tightly arranged style that characterizes many of these mid-50's RCA jazz sessions. However, since Cohn's measured playing could never really be taken for New York Hot, and since his longtime partner Zoot Sims is part of Rogers' West Coast group, it's hard to say that these sides are really any sort of true battle between the coasts. One of the most compelling albums we've ever heard from Ornette Coleman – and a set that's very different than some of his other work for different labels – particularly his better-known material for Blue Note and Atlantic! The album's got a righteous feel that's right up there in the best spirit of the Flying Dutchman label of the early 70s – a mode that's still on the far reaches of avant jazz that Ornette explored on earlier sessions – but which also has a warmer, almost more spiritual quality at times too. The core group features legendary partners Charlie Haden on bass, Dewey Redman on tenor, and Ed Blackwell on drums – but part of the record features an unnamed group of "Friends & Neighbors", who join in on the title cut with this collaborative spirit that really sets the tone for the whole record. An album of twisting tunes, designed to cash in on the big craze of the early 60s – but also one of Sam Cooke's best full albums for RCA! True, most of the tracks have "twist" in the title – but that also means that they're nice groovers too – usually with the kind of upbeat, romping rhythms that really show off Sam's vocal powers – that great mix of rough and smooth that made him one of the key singers in the birth of soul music! Includes the hit "Twistin The Night Away" – plus "Twistin In The Kitchen", "The Twist", "Somebody's Gonna Miss Me", "Movin & A Groovin", "Sooth Me", "That's It I Quit I'm Movin On", and "Twistin In The Old Town Tonight". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has a small sticker on one corner, light wear, and light splash stains on the front.)

Cuarteto D'Aida con Chico O'FarrillEvening At The Sans Souci ... LP
RCA, 1957. Very Good+ ... $29.99
The groovy Cuarteto D'Aida were sort of a Cuban version of the Quarteto Em Cy – in that they took a basic American jazz harmony vocal style (from groups like the Four Freshmen or Hi-Los), and gave it a all-female reading, with Latin grooves to change up the sound nicely! The legendary Omara Portuondo is in the group here – and the album features some wonderfully jazzy backings by Chico O'Farrill, which further add to the sound of delight in the set! The album was recorded live in Havana, and it's got a really unique sound that makes it one of our favorite RCA International dates from the time. Titles include "Tabaco Verde", "El Bombon De Elena", "Totiri Mundachi", "Chachita", "Profecia", and "Cuanto Me Alegro". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has a cutout hole, a name in pen, and light wear. Vinyl has a short click on "Las Mulatas Del Cha Cha Cha")

D'AngeloBlack Messiah ... LP
RCA, 2014. New Copy 2 LPs Gatefold ... $24.99
D'Angelo comes back after many years awol from the studio – and the result is a stunning new step in his music! We've loved the man from day one – and some folks could well say that he really helped reinvigorate soul back in the 90s – and all his time away from the studio has definitely been formative, as he comes back here with a righteous power that really blows away all his previous work! D'Angelo still loves the slow beat and mellow approach to funk – but he's also picked up a lot more fuzz and freak, too – righteous energy that more than lives up to the Black Messiah promised by the title, as do the lyrics. Instrumentation includes work by Questlove on drums, Roy Hargrove on trumpet, and Jesse Johnson on guitar – and the grooves have these tripping, slow-percolating elements that really give the lyrics a great sort of crackle. More than worth the wait – as you'll hear on titles that include "Back To The Future (parts 1 & 2)", "Sugah Daddy", "Really Love", "1000 Deaths", "Ain't That Easy", "Betray My Heart", "The Door", and "Till It's Done (Tutu)". Matt DennisShe Dances Overhead ... LP
RCA, 1955. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Dreamy vocals from Matt Dennis – a set of Rodgers & Hart numbers, performed in a sweetly swaying style that has plenty of warm touches. Unlike some of Matt's smaller combo records, this set's got larger backings from the orchestra of Harry Geller – using some light strings and woodwinds to give the set a darker sort of finish that works nicely with Matt's fragile vocals. The approach is unique for a male singer at the time – fitting, given that Matt's such a uniquely talented vocalist! Titles include "Have You Met Miss Jones", "This Funny World", "Give Her A Kiss", "Mimi", "Nobody's Heart", and "I Married An Angel". LP, Vinyl record album

Paul DesmondBossa Antigua (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA, 1965. Used ... $5.99
The team of Paul Desmond and Jim Hall was one of the best ideas ever forged in American jazz of the 60s – and the icy pair are perfect company together on this album of bossa-inflected tracks with a very cool edge! The album allows Desmond's alto to take on a warmth and flowing quality it never had in the Dave Brubeck group – and Hall's guitar work, while a masterpiece of understatement, brings in just the right amount of ringing tone to echo out the brilliance of Desmond's ideas. Gene Wright and Connie Kay complete the group, and titles include "O Gato", "Samba Cantina", "Girl From East 9th", "Ship Without A Sail", and "Bossa Antigua". Plus, this excellent CD reissue features 2 bonus tracks – the groovy "Samba Cepeda" and an alternate take of "O Gato". CD
(Out of print, Classic Edition with bonus tracks and red border.)

✨✧ Paul DesmondTake Ten Plus (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA, 1963. Used ... Just Sold Out!
That's "Take Ten", not "Take Five" – a great title cut that echoes Paul Desmond's previous work with Dave Brubeck – but which then gives way quickly to some sweet bossa-styled grooves done with guitar from Jim Hall! The album's one of the strongest of the Hall/Desmond collaborations for RCA – A sublime showcase not just for Paul's impeccable alto, but also for the amazing tones and chromes that fly freely from the strings of Jim's guitar! Both players are set up with just a bit of gentle backing – light percussion from Connie Kay, and a bit of bass from Gene Cherico or Gene Wright. The whole thing's a well-conceived study in economy, as the two players craft sly and subtle lines around spare drum and bass backings – slowly hanging sound in space to weave a rich web of sound that's as compelling as it seems to be effortless! Titles include "Take Ten", "El Prince", "Embarcadero", "Samba De Orfeu", "Theme From Black Orpheus", and "Alone Together". Plus, the CD reissue features 3 bonus tracks – "Out Of Nowhere", and alternate takes of "El Prince" and "Embarcadero". CD
