Brazil, Bossa Nova, & Blues

LP (Item 7831) United Artists, 1962 — Condition: Very Good
Originally: 6.99
Bossa nova from Herbie Mann – one of our favorite albums ever from the famous flute player – cut for United Artists, and a one-off session that's arguably better than most of his Atlantic work of the time! There's a groove here that's undeniable – a sense of swing that grabs us right from the get-go, and makes us totally love each new track before Mann's flute even comes into the mix! These grooves come from some great interplay between Dave Pike on marimbas, Haygood Hardy on vibes, Billy Bean on guitar, and a host of hip percussionists who include Willie Bobo, Carmen Costa, and Carlos Patato Valdez! Tracks are long, with a Joao Donato-like sense of space – similar to Pike's excellent bossa work for Prestige around the same time – which makes a perfect settion for Herbie's soulful flute. The whole thing's wonderful, and titles include "Me Faz Recordar", "Minha Saudade", "Copacabana", "Brazil", and "BN Blues".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono pressing in the textured cover, with light wear and aging.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, Late 50s. Very Good
Material from the Flute Souffle and Flute Flight albums – surprisingly great records, and ones that features Herbie and Bobby trading flutes and tenor, blowing long solos in a set that gives them plenty of room to work! The album only features four long tracks – "Tel Aviv", ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside/ABC, 1957. Very Good+
An early record by Herbie Mann, and one that offers a nice treat – bass clarinet! Although Herbie made his fame in the 60s with his Latiny flute playing, he was also a darn good bass clarinetist, and he plays both instruments on this rare early session from 1957. The bass clarinet doesn't ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1961. Very Good+
Excellent Verve work from Herbie – a sweet little set with a nice Latin undercurrent! The style here is similar to that of Herbie's Flautista album – and has some larger arrangements from a nonet set the backdrop for some evocative flute solos from Mann. Herbie Mann

Yardbird Suite
Savoy, 1957. Near Mint-
Very early work from Herbie Mann – delivered with a lot more fire than some of his later sides! The album's kind of a blend of bop and the 50s chamber jazz mode from which Mann emerged – played with a strong combo that includes Eddie Costa on vibes, Joe Puma on guitar, and Phil Woods ... Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint-
Herbie Mann got a standing ovation for this performance – at least if the title is to be believed – and considering the grooves on the set, it was all for very good reason! The album's one of the few to feature Mann in the company of pianist Chick Corea – who steps out here with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1965. Near Mint-
An excellent album of Latin material from Herbie Mann – and proof that he's equally great in just about any setting! The album's a rare Columbia Records outing from Herbie – but it's easily one of his greatest of the 60s, thanks to some really smoking arrangements from Oliver Nelson ... LP, Vinyl record album

Today!
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+
The sound of today, circa 1966 – served up by flute man Herbie Mann, who was always at the forefront of music at the time! Great stuff – recorded in Mingus' classic period! Music From Odds Against Tomorrow
United Artists, 1959. Near Mint- Gatefold
A brilliant album through and through – not just a standout from the late 50s years of the Modern Jazz Quartet, but also a compelling soundtrack composed entirely by pianist John Lewis! Lewis' writing was always a key part of the group's sound, but here it really comes into its own – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dream Come True
United Artists, 1980. Near Mint-
Warm guitar magic from Earl Klugh – exactly the kind of record that helped cement his fame at the start of the 80s – making Klugh one of the leading guitarists of his time! The style's often a bit mellow, but never in a sleepy way – just a great extension of the mode that Earl ... LP, Vinyl record album

A compelling comeback set for clarinetist Edmond Hall – cut in 1959 when Chris Barber was enjoying a hit with a remake of Sidney Bechet's "Petite Fleur", which provided for a nice opportunity to get Hall back in the studio for a date under the same name!
