Chaka Khan — Chaka ... LP 22.99
The very first solo album from Chaka Khan – recorded after a great 70s run in Rufus, and an instant-classic that showed the world that she might be an even more amazing artist on her own! All those fantastic vocals from the previous albums with Rufus seem to get even more center stage action here – set up with these superb arrangements from Arif Mardin, who does the same thing for Chaka that he'd done for Aretha Franklin a decade before – pushing her immediately into the role of superstardom, but in a way that's doesn't sacrifice her art at all – and which in fact may well make it even better! Titles include the long-running classic "I'm Every Woman" – but we love even more the incredible "Love Has Fallen On Me" – a funky gem that seems to evoke the Chess/Cadet scene that was in Chicago during Chaka's early years – next to other great tunes that include "I Was Made To Love Him", "Sleep On It", "We Got The Love", "Life Is A Dance", and "Sleep On It".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear, promo sticker, and a name in pen.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prince

Controversy
Warner, 1981. Near Mint-
A key moment of transition for Prince – a set that's got him toning down the longer-haired look of previous records, and going for the new wave sense of style that would help him cross into many audiences in years to come! Controversy still has Prince singing to the already-converted, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Warner, 1995. Near Mint- 2LP
A great return to form for Prince – even though at the time, we all had to refer to him with an unpronounceable symbol! There's a lean, funky vibe to most of the record – almost a step back to the unified group approach of his mid 80s classics – and even though a few sonic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band

Together (cartoon cover)
Warner, 1968. Very Good-
Mad mad funk, and the fantastic second LP by the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band – the group that proved to everyone that LA could be just as funky as any other city in the 60s! The record draws strongly from the group's indie roots in the funky 45 scene – and the album's filled with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eugene Record

Trying To Get To You
Warner, 1978. Near Mint-
A nicely understated set from the great Eugene Record – one that really has him moving forward in a mature, masculine role after his work with The Chi-Lites! Record's a great lead act on his own – and has a sense of confidence that's nicely balanced with some of the heartbreaking tones ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dionne Warwick

Love At First Sight
Warner, 1977. Sealed
The final Warner Brothers album from Dionne Warwick – and a smooth, sophisticated affair done with full arrangements from Michael Omartian! LaBelle

LaBelle
Warner, 1971. Very Good
A real breakthrough in female soul for the 70s – the initial album from Labelle – a set that's very different material than the group were doing on their girl group singles in the 60s! The trio here is legendary – Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash – three ... LP, Vinyl record album

Laid Back

Keep Smiling
Sire, 1983. Sealed
It takes a record like this one to remind us just what a magical crossover time the post-disco, post-punk days of the early 80s could be! Take two white guys from Denmark – Tim Stahl and John Guldberg – give them a drum machine and some funky beats, and out comes the breakdance classic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Curtis Mayfield

Got To Find A Way
Curtom, 1974. Very Good+
A great album that's often overlooked amidst the flurry of early 70's releases on Curtom, but which stands as one of Mayfield's greatest from the 70s! In fact, we'd say that the album's one that we enjoy putting on more than most – because the songs are less familiar, and not nearly as ... LP, Vinyl record album
Kapp, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
The one and only album by The Unifics – and a beautiful precursor to the solid group sounds of the east coast early 70s. The group's got some wonderful harmonies – still raw, but showing the strength of smooth production to hit some very strong moments. Arrangements are by Richard ... LP, Vinyl record album

Patrice Rushen

Patrice
Elektra, 1978. Near Mint-
A sweeeeeet groover by Patrice Rushen – her first album for Elektra, and a stunning blend of funky jazz and soul! T-Connection

Magic
Dash/TK, 1977. Very Good+
Plenty of Magic here from T-Connection – a clubby set of tracks, yet one that's still put together more like a funk combo record from the mid 70s! The instrumentation is mindblowing – impeccable guitar and basslines, set to snapping rhythms that really capture the best Miami funk mode ... LP, Vinyl record album

CJ & Co

Devil's Gun
Westbound, 1977. Very Good+
