Saturday Night/Sunday Night at the Blackhawk

LP (Item 7218) Verve, 1962 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
A great live set recorded in 1962 with some of Cal's best players in the group – pianist Lonnie Hewitt and drummer John Rae, joined by bassist Freddie Schreiber. The groove's a bit less Latin than usual, but the jazz vibe is very strong – and Tjader really shines with the local crowd at San Francisco's famous Blackhawk night spot. Titles include "222 Time", "Noonie's Groove", "Weep", and "Fred's Ahead". One of the more obscure Tjader Verve sides, too!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo MGM pressing. Cover has some aging inside the gatefold.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cal Tjader

San Francisco Moods
Fantasy, Early 60s. Near Mint-
A nice album of lyrical groovers by this master vibist – played with more of a jazz feel than Cal's 60's Latin sessions – and it's based around a nice set of original tracks dedicated to San Francisco. Bay Area guitar legend Eddie Duran plays with Cal's group on the session, and titles ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1958. Very Good
One of Cal Tjader's best late 50s dates for Fantasy Records – thanks to some smoking tenor sax from Jose "Chombo" Silva! The album has Cal working in the very comfortable territory of San Francisco's Blackhawk Nightclub – in a combo that also features familiar players Vince ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

Warm Wave
Verve, 1964. Very Good Gatefold
A mighty nice pairing – the vibes of Cal Tjader and the sophisticated arrangements of Claus Ogerman – who definitely ensures that the album's the warm wave promised in the title! The core group features Jerome Richardson on reeds, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Hank Jones on piano – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jack Teagarden

Mis'ry & The Blues
Verve, 1961. Very Good+
Later work by Jack, but an album recorded with a fair amount of care, and one that captures his classic vocals and trombone in just the right setting. The group's a sextet – with Don Goldie on trumpet, Don Ewell on piano, and Barrett Deems on drums. Shay Torrent plays organ on the track ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie

Ebullient Mr Gillespie
Verve, 1959. Very Good
Ahhh . . . Diz in the 50s. What a great thing! He's post bop, post cubop, but still has all the best elements of those eras – wrapped up into a more complicated Latin-tinged style that's filled with warmth, humor, and some pretty compelling grooves. This set is one of Diz's best from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wes Montgomery

Bumpin'
Verve, 1965. Very Good-
An incredible album from Wes Montgomery – and the beginning of a whole new sound for his guitar! Wes moves away from his small combo soul jazz roots on the set – and hits a wonderfully sweet new vibe with larger arrangements from Don Sebesky – bigger backdrops that fill in the ... Bill Evans & Shelly Manne

Empathy
Verve, 1962. Very Good Gatefold
The cover co-credits Bill Evans and Shelly Manne as the leader of the set – and that distinction's an important one – as the record has a slightly different feel than some of Bill's other 60s work for Verve! The sound is often a bit stronger, somewhat bolder – and although Manne's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1962. Very Good+
A wonderful album of 60s Basie – one that focuses on the writing and arranging talents of the great Neal Hefti! Hefti's one of our favorite soundtrack composers of the decade, but in the years before his film fame, he was a frequent partner of Basie – and this album marks one of their ... Duke Ellington & Johnny Hodges

Blues Summit (Side By Side/Back To Back)
Verve, 1959. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A great little album that builds on the strength of Johnny Hodges' small group 50s sessions for Verve – and which lets Duke Ellington in on some of the action! The format is nicely stripped-down throughout – featuring Hodges in sextet and septet formation with players that include Ben ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wes Montgomery

Tequila
Verve, 1966. Very Good Gatefold
A classic from Wes Montgomery – and exactly the kind of record that made him a legend in the 60s! The set's one of Wes' collaborations with arranger Claus Ogerman – a key talent who was really on the rise at the time, and who understood how to perfectly balance Montgomery's unique ... Artie Shaw

Sequence In Music
Verve, 1956. Very Good
Way more than just another Shaw set of trad jazz – as the group's a small one, with Tal Farlow on guitar, Hank Jones on piano, and Joe Roland on vibes – and the tracks are all nice and long, and in a Verve style too! Shaw penned four of the six tunes – "Sunny Side Up", ... LP, Vinyl record album
