Moment Of Truth (80s pressing)

LP (Item 613894) Pacific Jazz, 1963 — Condition: Used
Temporarily Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

4.90 5

One of the classic big band sessions cut for Pacific Jazz by LA soul jazz arranger Gerald Wilson. Nearly every track's an original, and the album includes Wilson's killer track "Viva Tirado" – a tight jazzy stepper that was covered by loads of other artists, most famously El Chicano. The record's got loads of other nice moments, too, like "Moment of Truth", "Latino", "Josefina", and "Patterns". A seminal release in the development of west coast Latin funk – and a record that's tougher to find in good shape than you'd think!  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pacific Jazz, 1965. Near Mint-
The title's a weird one, because the album was recorded in the studio and not on stage – but we're hardly going to complain, because the record's so great! California Soul
World Pacific, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
A very hip set of arrangements by LA bandleader Gerald Wilson – and one that takes his soul jazz stylings of earlier albums, and gives them a bit more of a late 60s funky sound. The band's pretty darn hip, and includes players like Anthony Ortega, Hadley Caliman, and Bobby Bryant – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan brings the piano back in nicely here – but in a way that still hangs onto all the best modern tones of his earlier Pacific Jazz sessions! Reunion With Chet Baker
Pacific Jazz, 1957. Very Good
Late 50's session in which Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker try to recreate the sound that made them a legend on the West Coast in the first place. Cool breezy renditions of a number of standards, held down by the drumming of Dave Bailey and the bass of Henry Grimes, which is a nice treat on an album ... LP, Vinyl record album

A really hard-hitting groover from the great 60s trio of Les McCann – a set that adds in some extra guitar from Joe Pass, who definitely sounds his most soulful on the set! Pacific Jazz, 1960. Very Good-

A great collection of (until then) previously-unreleased material – pulled from the Pacific Jazz vaults from a range of 50s sessions, and spanning some of Gerry's initial sides for the company, up to work that approached the late 50s date of this album's release. Material features Gerry in a ... LP, Vinyl record album
