Soul Years – 1948 to 1973 – Atlantic Records 25th Anniversary

LP (Item 582615) Atlantic, Late 40s/1950s/1960s/Early 70s — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold
Not just soul, but lots of R&B too – work by Betty Wright, Joe Turner, Joe Tex, Sam & Dave, Stick McGhee, Ray Charles, The Drifters, Aretha Franklin, Ruth Brown, The Chords, Solomon Burke, and lots of others!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Miki Howard

Love Confessions
Atlantic, 1987. Near Mint-
Miki Howard at the top of her game – just the sort of record that had her standing out as one of the best new vocalists in soul during the second half of the 80s – and one of the few who could draw on the classic styles of earlier divas like Patti Labelle or Phyllis Hyman! Like both of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+
Mellow sexy Aretha – with warm arrangements by Arif Mardin, and plenty of nice electric piano by the great Richard Tee. Includes a great version of Stevie Wonder's "I Love Every Little Thing About You", plus the tracks "You Move Me", "You'll Never Get To Heaven" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1990s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
A great overview of work from one of the key female singers who helped redefine the sound of soul in the 90s – an artist who was able to bring in plenty of influences from hip hop, and occasionally work with rappers too! And yes, that's pretty darn common stuff these days – but Brandy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chic

C'est Chic
Atlantic, 1978. Very Good+
A massive set from the legendary Chic – and a set that has the dancefloor combo coming down perfectly throughout! Riffing Nile Rodgers guitars really make the tunes cook – as does the superb production – and although the record played plenty in discos and radios of the mainstream ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roberta Flack & Peabo Bryson

Live & More
Atlantic, 1980. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A double album from Roberta & Peabo – with some nicely recorded tracks from a gig at The Holiday Star Theater in Merrillville, IN (not too far south of Chicago) in the dawn of the 80s – and some tight studio material, too! It's got a some terrific live versions of some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aretha Franklin

Sweet Passion
Atlantic, 1977. Very Good+
One of Aretha's sadly overlooked 70s gems – a great little session produced by Lamont Dozier, with a mix of smooth soul, driving rhythms, and just the right amount of rough edges to keep things real, very much in the tone of Lamont's own strong work for the ABC label at the same time. Lamont ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don Covay & The Jefferson Lemon Blues Band

House Of Blue Lights
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good
A cool step sideways for the great Don Covay – a set that still holds onto all the soul of his earlier work for Atlantic – but one that also has Don hitting a rootsier, bluesier mode too! The combo's definitely a blues group at their core, but apart from some harmonica and a bit more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aretha Franklin

Lady Soul
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good
One of Aretha Franklin's undisputed classics from her late 60s run on Atlantic Records – a seminal session that furthered her deep soul agenda with key backings from Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd – both of whom handle the mix of rawness and polish that made Aretha so great at the time! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wilson Pickett

Best Of Wilson Pickett
Atlantic, Late 60s. Very Good
Hard heavy soul from The Wicked Pickett – and virtually a blueprint for the heavier sound of Muscle Shoals to come – as Wilson Pickett was to that soul scene what Otis Redding had been to the Memphis world of Stax Records! These aren't Wilson's first recordings – but as with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1967. Near Mint-
Hard heavy soul from The Wicked Pickett – and virtually a blueprint for the heavier sound of Muscle Shoals to come! Rick Hall and Tom Dowd produced the material, and tracks include classics like "Mustang Sally", "Land Of 1000 Dances", "Funky Broadway", "Soul ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ear Wax/Wonderland, 1978. Sealed
An obscure little funky group from Flint, Michigan, one with a tight ensemble sound that's very much in the Earth Wind & Fire mode – complete with a really great horn section, plenty of bass-heavy grooves a the bottom, and a relatively spiritual feel that comes through strongly on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Castor Bunch

It's Just Begun
RCA, 1972. Near Mint-
Wickedly fuzzy funk! Jimmy Castor recorded in a lot of different styles during the 70s – but the one he used on this album is still his best – and the album may well be his lasting testament of funky genius! The record's a non-stop guitar-heavy batch of classic funk tracks – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
