LP, Vinyl record album

An overlooked bit of 80s soul from Marlena Shaw – and a mostly R&B-based album, despite it's appearance on Verve! Although the date is late, Marlena's still keeping the same vibe going that she used in her late 70s work for Columbia – a sophisticated mix of soul and jazz, handled here with an approach that's still got all of the class of earlier years, and which comes across a lot more warmly than you might expect for the time! Titles include "This Time", "With You", "I Must Be In Love", "Loving You", "I'll Remember You", and "Before You Know It".  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

It Is Love
Verve, 1987. Near Mint-
Strange album for Marlena – recorded after her soul albums, and done in a live setting with a small group (Buddy Montgomery, Larry Ball, and Paul Humphrey). Marlena's ostensibly trying to get back to her jazz roots (as was Dee Dee Bridgewater around the same time), and she kind of does, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor (Japan), 1972. Near Mint-
A beautiful live set from 1972 – and a very unique album from Roy Ayers' Polydor years! The album originally was never issued in the US – clearly done for a hipper European market at the time – and it's got more of a jazz vibe than some of Roy's other work on Polydor, with sounds ... And Once Again
Polydor, 1980. Very Good
And once again, Isaac Hayes wows us with the brilliance of his later work at Polydor – really subtle soul that's a wonderful extension of modes first begun at Stax! The sound is a bit smoother here, but it really fits Ike's maturing vocals wonderfully – and sets him up in these ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mandrill Is
Polydor, 1972. Very Good- Gatefold
A fantastic bit of hard jamming funk from Mandrill – rougher than later work, with a mix of soul, jazz, and Latin influences, all coming together in a mode that reminds us of early 70s LA groups like War or El Chicano. The best element of the album's the mix of keyboards, bass-driven rhythms ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold (reissue)
An amazing double-live album that's to concert records what James Brown's Payback was to the sound of studio funk! Like that classic, this is a double-length 2LP set that really has James and the JBs stretching out and doing their thing – working here in a setting that's supposed to be the ... Polydor, 1979. Very Good+
A bit later than classic vintage for these guys – but still pretty darn nice! The sound's a bit smoother and more aimed at the club than before, but Olympic Runners also still retain their talent for tight funk-inspired grooves – often inflected with some really nice instrumental ... Tear To A Smile
Polydor, 1975. Very Good
One of the best early soul albums by Roy Ayers! Roy's working here with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Edwin Birdsong, William Allen, Harry Whitaker, and other hip players – a perfect crew to forge Roy's unique blend of jazz and soul. This is perhaps the first record to really have Roy stretching out ... LP, Vinyl record album
Garden Of Love
Polydor, 1978. Very Good
One of the coolest club projects of the 70s – a set of tracks based around the keyboards of Don Ray, but handled with lots of electronic disco touches from Cerrone! The pair are great arrangers on their own, but together they really make some magic – kind of a leaner take on the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor, 1973. Very Good-
Really tremendous work from Mandrill – an instant funky classic, and a set that has the group furthering the sublime sound they crafted on their seminal Composite Truth! The record has all these wonderful twists and turns – not just the usual 70s funky styles, but inflections from a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ian Dury takes his spastic rhythm style to Jamaica, where he adds in Sly & Robbie to the mix, and gets produced by Chaz Jankel. Not his classic stuff, but pretty nice anyway. Tracks include "Spasticus (Autisticus)", "The (Body Song)", "Lonely (Town)", and "Fu ... LP, Vinyl record album
Slippin' Away
Polydor, 1978. Near Mint-
An excellent set of 70s soul – served up by a morphed version of Chicago's Independents, and produced to perfection by the mighty Tom Tom Washington! The set's got a warm jazzy finish that's a wonderful surprise – one that bubbles along with the album's uptempo grooves and sweet ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mandrill
Polydor, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold
Mandrill's first album of funky Latin jazz and soul – a landmark in crossover styles that still sounds remarkably fresh today! Unlike later records, which feature a tighter funk sound, this one has the band jamming out in a Latin-inflected mode that sounds like some of the best Chicano bands ... LP, Vinyl record album
