An overlooked bit of 80s soul from Marlena Shaw – and a mostly R&B-based album, despite it's appearance on Verve! Although the date is late, Marlena's still keeping the same vibe going that she used in her late 70s work for Columbia – a sophisticated mix of soul and jazz, handled here with an approach that's still got all of the class of earlier years, and which comes across a lot more warmly than you might expect for the time! Titles include "This Time", "With You", "I Must Be In Love", "Loving You", "I'll Remember You", and "Before You Know It".  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Let Me In Your Life
South Bay, 1982. Very Good+
A near-lost indie soul effort from Marlena Shaw – recorded for the tiny South Bay label in the years after leaving bigger fame at Columbia, but still working here with producer Johnny Bristol, who makes for a surprisingly professional sound. Marlena's still trying to crack the clubs with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sweet Beginnings
Columbia, 1977. Very Good
A real classic from Marlena Shaw – a key 70s album that has the singer moving back to soul after some years in the jazz side of the spectrum – but with an approach that still holds onto all the sophistication she picked up along the way! Mandrill
Polydor, 1970. Very Good- Gatefold
Mandrill's first album of funky Latin jazz and soul – a landmark in crossover styles that still sounds remarkably fresh today! First Be A Woman
Polydor, 1980. Very Good+
A nice little album from the years when girl power wasn't just a punk rock thing – part of that undercurrent of "modern woman" pop from the late 70s – as evidenced by the album's title, and it's cover image of Leonore O'Malley ripping open her suit like Clark Kent! Yet as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mandrill Is
Polydor, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
A fantastic bit of hard jamming funk from Mandrill – rougher than later work, with a mix of soul, jazz, and Latin influences, all coming together in a mode that reminds us of early 70s LA groups like War or El Chicano. The best element of the album's the mix of keyboards, bass-driven rhythms ... LP, Vinyl record album

Peaches & Herb get some really wonderful help here from Freddie Perren – who really helps them focus their groove nicely for the dancefloor! There It Is
Polydor, 1972. Very Good
Raw power and righteous energy from James Brown – a set that still has all the best funk elements of his longer-form albums of the time, but which also packs an even stronger political message too! We the People

Wonderful work from the great Ellen McIllwaine! Ellen's certainly not a soul artist – but she's got a particularly soulful approach to folk rock – one that's made her a favorite of groovers worldwide in the past few decades, thanks to a big push from Gilles Peterson, and the club scene ...
