Joy Ryder

LP (Item 549053) Columbia, 1988 — Condition: Near Mint-
A fusion set, but one that's got all those sharp, dark edges that Wayne Shorter developed over the years – served up here with a depth that's maybe much more in the far-reaching fusion styles of Columbia Records in the 70s than some of the more polished efforts of the time! The core combo here features some great keyboards from Patrice Rushen – who's strongly returning to jazz, and playing with a lot more dynamism than on her soul records from a few years before – and the rest of the quartet features Nathan East on bass, and Terri Lyne Carrington on drums – augmented at times by guest work from Herbie Hancock and Geri Allen. With all that keyboard talent in place, you can bet there's a strongly electric vibe to the set – but Wayne more than matches that energy with his own work on saxes, especially his sharp-edged soprano. Dianne Reeves sings on the track "Someplace Called Where" – and other titles include "Causeways", "Cathay", "Over Shadow Hill Way", "Anthem", and "Daredevil".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a large radio station sticker & promo stamp.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Wayne Shorter

All Seeing Eye
Blue Note, 1965. Very Good
One of the more avant-oriented 60s sessions cut by Wayne Shorter for Blue Note – a record that's not entirely part of the "new thing" generation, but which definitely has Shorter pushing the boundaries from his previous records for the label! The lineup here is a key batch of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wayne Shorter

Super Nova
Blue Note, 1969. Very Good+
A pivotal record for Wayne Shorter – as the set opens up with a hint of the direction he'd take in the 70s, especially some of the music he'd create with Weather Report! The album's not a straight fusion outing, though, and it does have a fuller group than a fusion combo – yet there is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wayne Shorter

Schizophrenia
Blue Note, 1967. Sealed
A seminal album from this genius tenorist – a classic session from the late 60s that has Wayne Shorter pushing into a searching, spiritual groove, but one that's still filled with all the taught electricity of his earlier recordings on Blue Note! Shorter's accompanied by youthful modernists ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wilbert Longmire

With All My Love
Tappan Zee/Columbia, 1980. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sweet later work from guitarist Wilbert Longmire – a warm mixture of soul and funky jazz – and easily one of the better records to come from the Tappan Zee label at the time! McCoy Tyner (with Phyllis Hyman)

Looking Out
Columbia, 1982. Very Good
An 80s album by McCoy Tyner, but easily one of his most soulful sessions ever – thanks to help from Phyllis Hyman and a host of great guest stars! The sound's a bit more tightly arranged than some of Tyner's 70s sessions, but there's still plenty of fire here too – a bit of a Latin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Miles In The Sky
Columbia, 1968. Very Good+
Miles Davis makes the electric transition – in this groundbreaking set from the late 60s! The classic mid 60s quintet is still in place here – Wayne Shorter on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – but the sound is looser, freer, and ... Thelonious Monk

It's Monk Time
Columbia, 1967. Very Good+
One of our favorite Thelonious Monk albums ever – a bare bones, no nonsense session that's filled with great work from tenorist Charlie Rouse! Ramsey Lewis

Funky Serenity
Columbia, 1973. Near Mint-
Sweet electric funk from Ramsey Lewis! The album's one of his best from the 70s – and it's got Ramsey on Fender Rhodes, electric harpsichord, and other keyboards, grooving away in an open-ended 70s mode that still retains all the heavy soul of his classic work for Chess. Morris Jennings ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Hancock

Sound System
Columbia, 1984. Near Mint-
The follow up to Herbie's groundbreaking hit album Future Shock. There's some rehashing of themes here, with the remake of "Rockit" called "Hardrock" here – basically the same number with some heavy guitar added and a few different solos – plus similar numbers that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Clarke & George Duke

Clarke Duke Project 2
Columbia, 1983. Near Mint-
A second set from the Clarke Duke Project – and arguably even more soulful than the first!
