Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

Raw Funk
Hotpie & Candy/Instinct, Early 90s. Used
Sounds like rare funk material from the 60s – and the notes make you think the same thing – but the grooves were cut during the last 10 years, by the European funk combos that made up the now-defunkt Soulciety label! The imprint was one of the best acid jazz labels in the early 90s ... CD
Safecracker
Electraphonic, 2009. Used
Gritty grooves from The City Champs – a Memphis trio with a really classic sound! Instrumentation features Hammond, guitar, and drums – used in a blend that's spare, but super tight too – very much in the best Memphis funk mode from years past, and recorded with just the right ... CD
Philadelphia Experiment
Ropeadope/Atlantic, 2001. Used
Sweetly funky grooves from the Philly underground! The Philadelphia Experiment is a great trio featuring drummer Ahmir Thompson (from The Roots), jazz bassist Christian McBride, and keyboardist Uri Caine, who plays some great Fender Rhodes and Hammond B-3 on the set! The core grooves are by the ... CD
In Your Brain
Ubiquity, 2012. Used
The Monophonics definitely have a way of getting inside your brain – using a cosmic slop of fuzzy guitars and funky basslines to eat away your grey matter more than a maggot inside your cranium! Yet even past that heavy Funkadelic reference, they've also got a richer vibe too – ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2011. Used
Classic-styled funk from Alex Puddu – not only the greatest record we've heard from him so far, but a set that's definitely worthy of its "golden age" claim in the title! The music is all new, but it was done for a series of short Danish porno films from the 70s – and Puddu ... CD
Meltdown
East Green (UK), 2016. Used
Heavy funk, with some 70s Afro touches too – served up with some help from the Mighty Mocambos, Spike Orchestra, The Snitch, and other deep funk combos too! The horns here are nice and heavy, but used in a way that's different from both familiar Afro Funk and Ethio-styled work too – ... CD
Ubiquity, 2004. Used
Massive work by Quantic – his third album, and easily the best one so far! There's a sophistication to the grooves here that we never would have expected in the earlier recordings – a keen love of a globe's worth of influence – summed up in the deeply changing mood of the set, as ... CD
Shout (Japan), 2016. Used
The title may seem a bit strange, but the grooves on this set are so heavy, you might find yourself heading for the chiropractor after your first listen to the record! Tacosan takes strong inspiration from the James Brown band of the late 60s – with all the bumps, grinds, and funky jumps you ... CD
Get Organized
Urban/Polydor (UK), 1989. Used
Wonderful early work from the great James Taylor Quartet – a killer UK group that emerged out of the London mod and acid jazz scenes of the 80s, then went onto become a monstrously talented funk group in their own right! Taylor's smoking Hammond leads the session, stepping out in some strong ... CD
Sr Langosta, 2017. Used
A Caribbean experiment, but one that's more funky than anything else – served up here in a swirling blend of guitar, bass, keyboards, and horns – all with lots of very groovy touches around the edges! The front cover might make these guys look like a jamband, or one of those less-than-g ... CD
Keep Reachin' Up (US version)
Timmion/Light In The Attic, 2005. Used
A bold step forward for the deep funk groove of Timmion Records – way more than just a "funk band meets diva" set, and instead a fully-formed soul record that's one of the greatest indies we've heard in years! Nicole Willis has already won our hearts with earlier records, but here ... CD
Blue Note, Late 90s/Early 2000s. Used CD & DVD
A nice little overview of the Blue Note years of Medeski Martin & Wood – and a collection that includes their many styles for the label, some tracks previously unissued in the US, and a bonus DVD that includes 90 minutes of music videos, live performances, and documentary material! The ... CD
