Symphony Hall Swing

LP (Item 535189) Savoy, 1952/1956 — Condition: Near Mint-
Includes takes from 1952 with Fletcher Peck on piano, John Simmons on bass, and Jo Jones on drums; and from 1956 with Dolo Coker on piano, Edgar Willis on bass, and Kenny Dennis on drums.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Stitt Goes Latin
Roost, 1963. Very Good+
Sonny Stitt goes Latin – and the results are tremendous! The set's still got all the soulful feel of the best Stitt sessions for Roost, but it brings in some nice Latin rhythms too – inflecting things with that blend of soul jazz and congas you might find over at Prestige or Blue Note, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Roost, 1955. Near Mint-
Sonny Stitt plus the early genius of Quincy Jones – a really great combination that makes for a standout session on Roost! As you might guess with Quincy handling the arrangements, the group here is bigger than usual for Stitt – especially given that the bulk of his Roost sessions were ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brand New Bag
Jazz Masters, Late 70s. Very Good+
One of the best Stitt sessions from the 70's, and a sweet batch of electric tracks with Eddie Russ on the piano. In a way, this is his best album on the Jazz Master label – better than the Tornado album, which seems to show up more. It's got a very nice version of "We've Only Just ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cobblestone, 1972. Very Good
A return to basics after Sonny Stitt's late 60s Varitone and funk experiments – all-bop and all soul all the way through, and recorded with a tight quartet that features Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums! The style's a bit like Sonny's work of the late 50s, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1949/1950. Very Good
Great early stuff by Stitt – originally issued on 78 rpm sides by Prestige, but collected here in LP format with better notes! The sessions feature one session with Bud Powell on piano and Max Roach on drums, and another set with John Lewis on piano, JJ Johnson on trombone, and Roach again ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tornado (photo cover)
Jazz Masters, Mid 70s. Near Mint-
An incredible blend of Fender Rhodes and soulful saxophone – a late record from saxophonist Sonny Stitt, but one that also features the young Eddie Russ on keyboards! The record's got a laidback and funky sound that goes deeper than any of Stitt's earlier sides of the 70s – and it ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt

Now!
Impulse, 1963. Very Good Gatefold
A tight swinger from Sonny Stitt – one of the standout 60s dates he recorded for the Impulse label, a place where he seemed to get even more care and focus in the studio! The record's got all the soulful swing of Stitt's classics for Roost, but also hits a slightly more lyrical groove at ... LP, Vinyl record album

Savoy, Late 40s/Early 50s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold

Curtis Fuller

Blues-Ette
Savoy, 1959. Near Mint-
A seminal session from Curtis Fuller – one of a handful he cut for Savoy, recorded during that late 50s/early 60s period when he seemed poised to become one of the biggest trombonists in jazz! (Whatever happened? How did he cut so many records as a leader so fast, then slide back into being ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

Presenting Cannonball
Savoy, 1955. Very Good+
One of Cannonball Adderley's first albums – recorded for Savoy way back in 1955, and done with a free and open style that's a nice contrast to his tighter sides for Mercury! The album's very relaxed – that hardbop blowing session mode that Savoy virtually pioneered – letting the ... LP, Vinyl record album
