We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Golden Hits Live
Mercury, 1968. Near Mint-
The wonderful thing about this one is that the album allows you to hear how great Jerry could be in any setting – even without the fabulous studio work that graced most of his classic hits. Dangerous
Mercury, 1984. Very Good+
A tighter sound than before for The Bar-Kays – that lean approach to funky grooves that some of their contemporaries were hitting as the 80s moved on – yet still served up here by the full ensemble with a relatively fresh feel overall. Amidst the beats and keyboards, there's still lots ... LP, Vinyl record album

Amazing Timi Yuro
Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good
Amazing is right! Timi's one of the great under-rated Uptown Soul talents of the 60s, and this is one of her best records. The album features stunning production, in the best Mercury pop soul style of the 60s – with Quincy Jones at the controls, and Bobby Scott arranging and conducting. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aura
Mercury, Mid 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Is this the same group that went onto become Aurra and record disco records for Salsoul? We don't think so, but folks tell it that it is. Whatever the case, though, the record's a great batch of funky rock tracks, with some really hard groovers that crossover to a funky soul market – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Coke
Mercury, 1975. Near Mint-
An incredible fusion of all the greatness that was going on in the Bay Area scene of the 70s – put together by Coke Escovedo – the brother of Pete and Sheila E, former leader of Azteca, and onetime member of Santana! Yet this set sounds like none of that previous work at all – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury, 1974. Very Good
A seminal set from The Joneses – and a record that really set a whole new style for soul vocal groups in the 70s! The group soar into new heights with some of the growing sophistication of the east coast scene – bits of strings, tighter charts, and some cool pre-disco grooves – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brunswick, 1969. Very Good
A fantastic lost album by the great Gene Chandler – and one of his most sophisticated soul documents! The record was Gene's last album for Brunswick – issued shortly before Gene scored big once again on Mercury, which is why it's probably often lost in the shuffle of time. The record's ...
