Basie & Zoot

LP (Item 532532) Pablo, 1976 — Condition: Near Mint-
Also available
Count Basie & Zoot Sims — Basie & Zoot (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD 24.99
An unusual pairing, and recorded with a small group too, with John Heard and Louis Bellson – and Basie plays a bit of organ!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Back cover has a sticker.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Trumpet Summit Meets Oscar Peterson Big 4
Pablo, 1980. Very Good+ Gatefold
The trio of trumpeters meets the Oscar Peterson 4 – in a session of long tracks that have a liveish feel in the best Dizzy Gillespie mode! Most of the work here is in classic hardbop blowing style – with the trumpeters stating the head, then breaking out into well-voiced solos that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pablo, 1974. Near Mint-
A nicely sensitive set from guitarist Joe Pass – hardly the usual bag of Ellington-alike material, and instead a small group outing that unlocks a newly introspective side of Duke's compositions! Zoot Sims

Soprano Sax
Pablo, 1976. Near Mint-
A rare treat from Zoot Sims – an album of soprano sax material, recorded in striking contrast to his more familiar tenor! The sound is oddly more traditional than usual – and unlike many other players in the 70s, Sims doesn't use the soprano in a Coltrane-inspired mode, but in a way ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pablo, 1975. Near Mint-
Way more than just a Gershwin Songbook sort of record – thanks to some tremendous blowing here by Zoot Sims, who's mellowed nicely with age, and comes up with a wonderful sound for the record! Flying Dutchman, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold
An incredibly interesting record – and more of a spoken album than a jazz one, but with great jazz work by Oliver Nelson too! The album's a loving tribute to Carl B. Stokes, the first black mayor of a major American city (Cleveland) – and it's one of the strongest in a series of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Kind Of Blue
Columbia, 1959. Near Mint-
What can we say? This is the ultimate Miles Davis album – the one that includes so many songs that we've heard way too much in Starbucks, in retail stores, or at a friend's house who claims to be a "jazz expert", but is really a yuppie dilettante. Yet somehow, over all the years, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Keep On Lovin'
Groove Merchant, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Lonnie Smith's a long way from his Blue Note years here – but the sound is still plenty darn great, thanks to some fuller arrangements from the great Brad Baker – of B Baker Chocolate Company fame! The whole thing's quite electric – with Lonnie on Fender Rhodes and other ... LP, Vinyl record album
