Pablo MosesRevolutionary Dream ... CD
Shanachie, 1978. Used ... $12.99
A really sweet roots set from Pablo Moses – one that's got some cool electric moments at points, including very cool use of Arp – but which also retains all the earthy core to make the righteous currents of the lyrics come out right! Geoffrey Chung arranged and produced, and there's a vibe here that's a nice change from more mainstream work – still all the power that you'd hope for in Pablo's vocals, but a quality that's slightly trippy too – focused, yet willing to open the ears a little bit around the edges. Titles include "Be Not A Dread", "We Should Be In Angola", "Come Mek We Run", "Revolutionary Dream", "Where Am I", "Blood Money", and "Corrupted Man". CD
(Out of print. Spine has a cutout hole.)

Augustus PabloKing Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown ... CD
Shanachie, 1975. Used ... $6.99 9.99
Essential dub material from the legendary King Tubby – a set that's one of the best of the genre during the classic years – and which stands as a true testament to how great the format can be when handled right! The watchword here is simplicity – as the key elements are almost isolated in little sonic chambers, then set to resonate alongside each other – pulled from rhythms from tracks initially done as vocal productions, but reworked through the mixing talents of Erroll "ET" Thompson and Tubby. Players include Bobby Ellis on trumpet, Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall on tenor, and Augustus Pablo on organ and piano, plus a bit of clarinet. Titles include "Keep On Dubbing", "Stop Them Jah", "Young Generation Dub", "Each One Dub", "555 Dub Street", "Braces Tower Dub", "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown", "Corner Crew Dub", "Say So", "Skanking Dub", and "Frozen Dub". Areito/Mr Bongo (UK), 1978. New Copy ... $11.99
Totally groovy 70s work from Juan Pablo Torres – the legendary Latin trombonist who's known for years of great recordings, but who maybe still sounds his best on early albums like this from the Cuban scene! There's plenty of funk in the mix – thanks to electric bass, guitar, and other modern 70s elements – but Juan Pablo mixes these with richer acoustic elements, including percussion and occasional more traditional instruments – all of which create this great palette of sounds underneath his bold, soulful work on trombone! The style is very revolutionary, but hardly got much circulation on the US scene at the time, thanks to our closed door with Cuban culture – and the whole record's a treasure, with great cuts that include "Pan Caliente", "Guajira 2001", "Cacao", "Tatagua", "Rumba De Cajon Op 1", "Mangle", and "Asi Son Con El Son". On The Rocks/Mondo Groove (France), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 36.99
One of the most unusual albums ever cut by the legendary Latin jazz trombonist Juan Pablo Torres – and one of the grooviest, too – a special set that was recorded in Milan in the mid 80s, with backings by a sweet group who do a great job of blending Latin rhythms, clubby grooves, and just the right touch of jazz! Juan's on trombone in the lead – working with the Algo Nuevo group, which features the mighty Gonzalo Rubalcaba on piano, Fender Rhodes, and other keyboards – plus trumpet work from Adalberto Lore, who balances out Torres' sound in a really great way! There's both a mix of electric and acoustic percussion on the set, and the groove is more 80s club than 70s disco – and also comes across with the style of some of the more unusual hybrids that you'd be likely to find on the Areito label during Juan's generation in Cuba. Titles include "Alone", "Que Melcocha", "Y Caramba Que Son", "Oblivion", "Rialto", "Bermuda Triangle", and "Cubadisco". LP, Vinyl record album

A late 70s groover from Cuban trombonist Juan Pablo Torres – a wild mix of Latin, funk, soul, and jazz – a style that's quite unique, and which has made Torres' albums some of the most sought-after Havana grooves of the time! Drums snap hard on some of the best numbers – alongside tight horns, rootsy percussion, and some great keyboards too – and overall, there's a nice edge in the production, without some of the strings heard on some of Juan's other albums. No Business (Lithuania), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Alto saxophonist Rob Brown really shines in a setting like this – a record with a very open-ended vibe, as Brown improvises freely in tandem with Juan Pablo Carletti on the drums – spinning things out over two very long tracks that are full of delightful surprises at every twist and turn! Brown has a really great way of handling his horn – blowing freely, but almost with an inherent sense of structure – not playing changes, or hitting a rhythm, but creating these patterns that really hold the whole thing together – still the farther side of tuneful, but almost there at times. Titles include "6BC" and "Children's Magical Garden" – both nice and long! CD

A nice collection of Pablo Moses sides from the early 80s. To us, Moses never really achieved the stardom his talent merited, one of the finest of his era's songcrafters, typically recorded by Geoffrey Chung with a sympathetic production style, nice and spare, highlighting Moses light falsetto voice. 8 tracks in all: "A Song", "Dubbing Is A Must", "Revolutionary Step", "Last Straw", "Proverbs Extractions", "Music Is My Desire", "One People" and "Pave The Way". Seminal 80s work from Augustus Pablo – a set that's maybe got a bit more digital and electronic touches in the mix, but which still maintains that fantastic mix of dub and melodica that made the man so unique! The tunes have very righteous rhythms at the core, and a bit of keyboards mixed in with Pablo's lead – and maybe a few spacey touches around the edges that come off in a really great way! Augustus handles all the keyboards, arrangements, and production – and titles include "Twinkling Star", "Creation Blues", "Zion UFO", "Drums To The King", "First World Call", "This Song", "Twenty One Years Later", and "Ancient Harmonies". 17 North Parade, Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
There's few folks more born to dub you than the great Augustus Pablo – an artist whose laidback work helped introduce dub music to a whole new generation in the 70s, then continued to remain at the top of the stack as the years went on! And although these cuts are rare material, not Pablo's classics, that only testifies even more strongly to the way that his 70s work can still blow away most of the competition – including any of the cats from the younger generation. The tracks here are all from the vaults of Gussie Clarke – and titles include "Classical Illusion (dub vendor 12")", "Origan Style", "Stardum", "No Entry (12" version)", "Born To Dub You", "Believe A Dub", and a nice two takes on the classic "Skylarking". Pressure Sounds (UK), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
Essential! One wonders why when the original King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown album is so heavy, that you'd want another dub version, but one spin of this special reissue package and you'll be convinced. Altogether different dubs and versions of many of the same rhythm cuts as that watershed dub LP only prove that the whole concept of "versioning", and cutting multiple dubs of the same rhythms (usually to service selectors and sound systems who needed unique tracks) was pure genius on the part of Jamaican producers. Add that to the sheer weight of the rhythms used here, and you've got a formula for a potent set! Once again, the producers at Pressure Sounds have dug up some beautiful gems, finding unique versions of H. Swaby's melodica dancing over thundering Rockers' rhythms and taking a dip now and again in a bucket of reverb & echoplex. Insightful liner notes and a beautiful sleeve complete this package of 17 massive instrumental tracks, including "Black Gunn", "New Style", "El Rockers", "Skanking Easy", "Tribalist" and "Cassava Piece". Dubby genius from the great Augustus Pablo – a set that continues the spirit of his best 70s work in this mode, but with a sound that has a few slight 80s touches! The overall sound is still very nice and spare – laidback, gently tripping in the rhythm department, and with both melodica solos from Pablo – and some other keyboard work that really echoes the moody, spacey, snakey sound of his work on the blown instrument! The title names are a bit basic, but that hardly matters, given the sound of the set – and tracks include "Riot Dub", "In The Red Dub", "Hanging Dub", "Night Patrol Dub", "Rastaman Dub", "Zion Way Dub", and "Dubbing King James". Discomoda/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare bit of soundtrack funk from mid 70s Venezuela – a set that's strongly influenced by Italian cop/crime modes of the time, but sometimes served up with a nicely leaner vibe as well! In addition to the funky guitar, tight basslines, and jazzy horns you might expect – there's also some interesting moments that include odd keyboards, acoustic guitar, and even a violin and piano duet – used in ways to offset more familiar funky styles to really keep things interesting! The music was scored for a sexploitation film of the time, and certainly echoes the way those films were scored around the globe – but as with so much Venezuelan work of the period, there's a very special, very unique approach as well. A stunner from Cuban trombonist Juan Pablo Torres – one of the greatest forces working in Latin jazz today! The album's a large-group set of Latin jazz tracks – heavily percussive, but also equipped with a brace of horns on most tracks – making for a much fuller sound than some of Torres' other recent albums. The set's got an easygoing swing that takes us right back to Basie's best for Roulette Records – a reference the title seems to imply – and although the band's a later one, they've got that perfect Basie sense of fluidity, especially in the way the horns come together! The title's not a hokey TV reference or anything like that – but a strong reminder that the Count Basie group was still very much in their prime during the 1970s, thanks especially to the recording talents that the Pablo label brought to records like this! Most of the work here was arranged and composed by Sam Nestico – the talent who was bringing a really fresh voice to the Basie group while still keeping most of its best elements intact. The track "Bundle O Funk" features some great Fender bass in the grooves, and is arguably one of the few funky tracks that Basie ever recorded – but other tracks get back to an all acoustic groove, and include "The Great Debate", "Ya Gotta Try", "Reachin Out", "Featherweight", and "Prime Time". The pairing of talents is quite unique – and makes for some of the most compelling Fitzgerald material you'll hear from the time – really open, free tracks that have Ella pushing things even more than usual – an incredible demonstration of her rich talents, which were sometimes lost amidst more conventional record dates. Pass has a clear, clean tone that's mighty nice – and the record brings together material recorded in Tokyo and Hamburg, with titles that include "One Note Samba", "Bluesette", "Old Folks", "Wave", "Mood Indigo", "Take Love Easy", "Satin Doll", and "Gone With The Wind". Ella Fitzgerald & Joe PassSpeak Love ... CD
Pablo/Polydor (Japan), 1983. Used ... $6.99
A magical pairing discovered late in Ella's career – but one that brought whole new life into her music! The album revives the duo of Fitzgerald and Pass in the same spare duet setting that made for a few key Pablo records in the 70s – but there's a slight difference here in the way that Joe's handling his guitar – sometimes a bit bolder, and recorded more up in the mix – so that his chromatic hues share center stage equally with Ella's vocals. If anything, this new approach is even better than before – and Pass seems like a much more confident player, one who's a perfect choice to keep the fire going in Ella's aging vocals. Titles include "Girl Talk", "Blue & Sentimental", "Speak Low", "Comes Love", "At Last", "There's No You", and "Gone With The Wind". CD

Tommy FlanaganTokyo Recital ... LP
Pablo, 1975. Near Mint- ... $7.99
The title says "recital", but the album's no stiff, starched concert affair – as Tommy Flanagan is right at home on the piano, playing with a fluid grace that makes the record one of his best from the 70s! There's a simple, unadorned quality to the album – one that really lets Tommy sparkle with a quality that was always present in his work, but sometimes slightly dimmed in the studio – especially in large group records. And it's almost as if Pablo records has taken a cue from advances in Japanese piano trio recordings of the decade to bring a new sort of life to Flanagan's career – one that Tommy would later go onto explore heavily in later Japanese-only sides. Rhythm is by Keter Betts on bass and Bobby Durham on drums – and tracks include "The Intimacy Of The Blues", "Ummg", "Something To Live For", "All Day Long", "Mainstem", and "Daydream". Great late work from Hawk – recorded near the end of his life, with a soulful quartet that included Barry Harris on piano and Bob Cranshaw on bass. The tracks are all fairly standard – like "Sugar", "The Man I Love", "Time On My Hands", and "The One I Love" – but Hawkins' tone is incredible, with a raspy edge, and some surprisingly modern moments that show that he was always continuing to grow as an artist. Pablo, 1974. Very Good+ ... $8.99
A striking little record – and the kind that both players could only have made with the new freedoms in jazz recording of the 70s! Although Peterson and Gillespie had played together before on earlier Verve albums, the setting was never like this – because the album's only a duet between trumpet and piano, with no other instrumentation at all – yet the sound is amazing swinging! Peterson works almost as a one man rhythm section here – bouncing the tunes with plenty of hard inflections on his left hand – and setting up a swing that Dizzy blows over with warmly muted tones. There's a quality here that's personal – but not in that "oh look at us, we're such big stars" sort of way – and titles include "Mozambique", "Caravan", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "Blues For Bird", and "Con Alma" – always a treat to hear in a setting like this! Pablo, 1977. Near Mint- ... $11.99 14.99
An overlooked gem from Zoot Sims – a session that has him working in very laidback company with Jimmy Rowles on piano, who tipples the keys of the piano with a really timeless late nite kind of sound! The style here is a bit like that of the Rowles/Getz album The Peacocks – although a bit more straightforward overall, with a main focus on the talents of both soloists, coming together beautifully in a relatively spare setting. Bass is by George Mraz and drums are by Mousie Alexander – and the real surprise here is almost Sims, who blows with this open-ended, laidback tone that's really great – a bit languid, but never weary – and somehow with a lot more warmth than on many of his other too-tight records from the 70s. A historic meeting between pianist Art Tatum and tenor sax giant Ben Webster – recorded in 1956, but only first issued by Pablo Records in the 70s! ✨✧ Oscar Peterson & Milt JacksonTwo Of The Few ... LP
Pablo, 1983. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two of the few, and nobody else – a set of duets between pianist Oscar Peterson and vibist Milt Jackson – recorded here in a really stripped-down setting, especially for the date! Both players bring a really classic feel to their style here – almost making the date feel like some lost tapes from the 50s – and Peterson's got a much more rhythmic pulse to his piano without the bass and drums, really reminding us a lot of his early sides for Verve. Titles include "Reunion Blues", "Mister Basie", "Limehouse Blues", "If I Had You", "Here's Two Of The Few", "Just You Just Me", and "Lady Be Good". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Oscar Peterson & Roy EldridgeOscar Peterson & Roy Eldridge ... LP
Pablo, 1975. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of those great stripped-down Peterson-plus dates for Pablo Records from the 70s – a session that features Oscar on both piano and organ, working alongside the trumpet of Roy Eldridge! There's no other instrumentation at all, and the sound is completely charming – intimate without sounding too laidback – and especially nice when the organ comes in, which makes for a real change from some of the other Peterson dates of this nature. Eldridge has more than enough command of his horn to still swing mightily in the setting – and titles include "Little Jazz", "Bad Hat Blues", "Sunday", "Blues For Chu", "She's Funny That Way", and "The Way You Look Tonight". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Monty Alexander 7Jamento ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Nice mellow fusion from Monty, recorded in LA with a group that includes Ernest Ranglin on guitar, plus Andy Simpkins on bass, and added drums and percussion from 4 other players. There's a bit of steel drums on the record, in the style that Alexander was using on other MPS sides from the time – and the tracks have a nice mellow funky feel to them. Titles include 'Mango Rengue", "Jamento", "Sugarloaf At Twilight", "Slippery", and "Accompong". CD
