Hugh Mundell/Augustus PabloAfrica Must Be Free By 1983 (with bonus dubs) ... CD
RAS/VP, 1978. New Copy ... $13.99 15.98
An incredible moment of righteous energy from the Kingston scene of the 70s – sublime production by Augustus Pablo, and very powerful lyrics from the great Hugh Mundell! Despite the laidback groove of the record, the tunes themselves have as much political energy as American work of the spiritual jazz generation, steeped in Rastafarian inspiration, but delivered by Hugh Mundell with this beautifully fragile vocal style – which somehow almost makes the message in the music even more compelling than if it came across from a more heavy-handed force! Chinna Smith plays lead guitar, and Pablo handles a lot of the piano and melodica lines – and titles include "Let's All Unite", "My Mind", "Africa Must Be Free By 1983", "Why Do Black Men Fuss & Fight", "Book Of Life", "Run Revolution A Come", "Day Of Judgement", and "Jah Will Provide". CD also features the full Africa Dub album, too – but with each dub track right after the regular song on the record – with titles that include "Unity Dub", "My Mind Dub", "Ital Sip", "Revolution Dub", "Africa Dub", "Sufferer Dub", and "Western Kingston Style". Rockers/Greensleeves, Early 80s. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Seminal 80s work from Augustus Pablo – a set that's maybe got a bit more digital and electronic touches in the mix, but which still maintains that fantastic mix of dub and melodica that made the man so unique! The tunes have very righteous rhythms at the core, and a bit of keyboards mixed in with Pablo's lead – and maybe a few spacey touches around the edges that come off in a really great way! Augustus handles all the keyboards, arrangements, and production – and titles include "Twinkling Star", "Creation Blues", "Zion UFO", "Drums To The King", "First World Call", "This Song", "Twenty One Years Later", and "Ancient Harmonies". ✨✧ Augustus PabloBorn To Dub You ... LP
17 North Parade, Mid 70s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
There's few folks more born to dub you than the great Augustus Pablo – an artist whose laidback work helped introduce dub music to a whole new generation in the 70s, then continued to remain at the top of the stack as the years went on! And although these cuts are rare material, not Pablo's classics, that only testifies even more strongly to the way that his 70s work can still blow away most of the competition – including any of the cats from the younger generation. The tracks here are all from the vaults of Gussie Clarke – and titles include "Classical Illusion (dub vendor 12")", "Origan Style", "Stardum", "No Entry (12" version)", "Born To Dub You", "Believe A Dub", and a nice two takes on the classic "Skylarking". Abraham/Get On Down, Late 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Uber-classic dub from Augustus Pablo! Dubbing In A Africa was produced by Pablo and features a rhythm section of Bingy Bunny, Sly & Robbie and Gladdy. Here they deliver a nice, tight set of tunes which like many of Pablo's other classics, veer closer to rhythm workouts than deep space dub excursions – and we ain't complaining about that! Tremendous stuff from one the greats! Titles include "King Of Kings Dub", "Herbal Weed Dub", "Dub In Ethiopia", "Dubbing In A Africa", "Nigerian Love Dub", and "Mount Of Olives Dub". CD

Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 28.99
Tripped-out greatness from the mighty Augustus Pablo – maybe one of the few cats in the world who could make the melodica sound like a cool instrument! This package digs deeper than some of the straight album reissues on the market – as the Pressure Sounds team have really unearthed some great cuts that originally only appeared as singles – 7" and 12" tracks that mix together heavy, dubby rhythms with Pablo's snakey lines on the breath-blown keyboard – all for a sound that's completely amazing. The set features work issued by a few different artists on the label, all with Pablo at the core – and titles include "Far East", "East Man Sound", "Up Warika Hill", "Mountain View Dub (versions 1 & 2)", "Pablo In Fine Style", "Ras Menilik Congo (Harp)" and "Kid Ralph" by Augustus Pablo – plus "Phillips Showcase" by the Pablo All Stars; "Levi Dub", "Raw Dub", "Cool Shade Dub", "Roots Dub" and "Zambian Style" by Rockers All Stars; "False Rumour" by Jah Levi; "Rockers Rock (version)" by Jah Iny; and "Chock Full & Dub" by Synthesis. Fantastic work from Augustus Pablo – and a great demonstration of the way that the best of the classic 70s Jamaican artists were able to shift their styles slightly during the 80s, but still come up with a sound that was every bit as great! There's more digital elements here than before – especially in the crackle of some of the rhythms – but in ways that are right around the edges, and which echo the sort of effects that might have been cooked up by tape in the studio – used here to bring a nice bite to the mix of melodica and melodica like keyboard lines from Pablo! Rockers/VP, Mid 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Four 80s albums from the mighty Augustus Pablo – served up here in a special 2CD set! First up is Blowing With The Wind – seminal 80s work from Augustus Pablo – a set that's maybe got a bit more digital and electronic touches in the mix, but which still maintains that fantastic mix of dub and melodica that made the man so unique! The tunes have very righteous rhythms at the core, and a bit of keyboards mixed in with Pablo's lead – and maybe a few spacey touches around the edges that come off in a really great way! Titles include "Pablo Meets P Smart In LI", "Progression Dub", "Revelino Dub", "Babylon Loosing Dub", "Sun Ray Dub", "Jah D Special", "Rockers Come East", Dubbing The Oppressors", and "Zion Seals Dub". One Step Dub is dubby genius from the great Augustus Pablo – a set that continues the spirit of his best 70s work in this mode, but with a sound that has a few slight 80s touches! The overall sound is still very nice and spare – laidback, gently tripping in the rhythm department, and with both melodica solos from Pablo – and some other keyboard work that really echoes the moody, spacey, snakey sound of his work on the blown instrument! The title names are a bit basic, but that hardly matters, given the sound of the set – and tracks include "Riot Dub", "In The Red Dub", "Hanging Dub", "Night Patrol Dub", "Rastaman Dub", "Zion Way Dub", and "Dubbing King James". Rising Sun is fantastic work from Augustus Pablo – and a great demonstration of the way that the best of the classic 70s Jamaican artists were able to shift their styles slightly during the 80s, but still come up with a sound that was every bit as great! Pablo, 1977. Near Mint- ... $6.99
The title's not a hokey TV reference or anything like that – but a strong reminder that the Count Basie group was still very much in their prime during the 1970s, thanks especially to the recording talents that the Pablo label brought to records like this! Most of the work here was arranged and composed by Sam Nestico – the talent who was bringing a really fresh voice to the Basie group while still keeping most of its best elements intact. The track "Bundle O Funk" features some great Fender bass in the grooves, and is arguably one of the few funky tracks that Basie ever recorded – but other tracks get back to an all acoustic groove, and include "The Great Debate", "Ya Gotta Try", "Reachin Out", "Featherweight", and "Prime Time". Duke's Big 4 here are a quartet of jazz legends – Joe Pass, Ray Brown, and Louie Bellson – all working with Duke himself to serve up unique small combo versions of older Ellington full band classics! The mix of piano, guitar, bass, and drums is a bit unusual for Ellington – and Pass especially has this sharply ringing tone that really brings a different flavor to many of the numbers – a kind of stepping, pulsating quality that's even in contrast to his other work from this period. Duke's piano augments the angularity, and titles include "Love You Madly", "Cottontail", "The Blues", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Everything But You", and "Just Squeeze Me". CD

Pablo, Early 60s. Used ... $5.99
A fantastic testament of the live genius of Duke Ellington – material recorded from a few different 60s shows recorded in Europe – woven together to make an album that's every bit as magical as some of the Duke's famous studio sides from the 40s and the 50s! The choice of tunes is great – some less-familiar Ellington compositions, highlighted by that fantastic blend of modernism and swing that the group was developing strongly from the mid 50s onwards – even more so than in previous years, with a maturation in both the leader and group members that made whole new heights of colorful expression possible! Players include Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, and Harry Carney on saxes – and Cat Anderson, Ray Nance, and Cootie Williams on trumpets – on titles that include "Bula", "Silk Lace", "Star Crossed Lovers", "ESP", "Guitar Amour", "Kinda Dukish", and two takes on "The Shepherd", which was done for a film about Jean Miro! Ella Fitzgerald, recorded in a nice lean setting – with mostly just the piano of Oscar Peterson to back her up, plus a bit of extra bass from Ray Brown on a few of the album's tracks! We love Fitzgerald in this mode – which is quite a change from some of her more familiar 70s work, and really shows the singer in her best light possible – handling things right out front, with an inherent sense of swing that's completely sublime! Peterson is great here too – playing with some of those more ragged edges that you'll get on his spare sessions for Pablo – some nice bluesy undercurrents that really help shape the sound of the record. Titles include "Mean To Me", "April In Paris", "Street Of Dreams", "I Hear Music", "More Than You Know", and "Midnight Sun". CD

There's a groove here that's a bit like some of the west coast work from the early 70s – played by a larger ensemble that mixes together a fair bit of horns, but lets key players step out nicely on the longer tracks – never jamming too much, but bringing a searching edge to the tracks to push them past their roots. Solo guitar by Joe Pass – a beautiful little album that's a perfect showcase for the new sensitivity in his music during his years at Pablo records! The Joe Pass heard here is light years away from the guitar player who made a few gimmicky records a decade before – and this album has Joe coming across with a gentle, but sophisticated approach to his instrument that we never would have expected in the past! Titles include "Night & Day", "My Old Flame", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Sweet Lorraine", "All The Things You Are", and "Round Midnight". CD

Oscar Peterson & Roy EldridgeOscar Peterson & Roy Eldridge ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1975. Used ... $7.99
One of those great stripped-down Peterson-plus dates for Pablo Records from the 70s – a session that features Oscar on both piano and organ, working alongside the trumpet of Roy Eldridge! There's no other instrumentation at all, and the sound is completely charming – intimate without sounding too laidback – and especially nice when the organ comes in, which makes for a real change from some of the other Peterson dates of this nature. Eldridge has more than enough command of his horn to still swing mightily in the setting – and titles include "Little Jazz", "Bad Hat Blues", "Sunday", "Blues For Chu", "She's Funny That Way", and "The Way You Look Tonight". A great date in which Eddie Cleanhead Vinson sticks only to alto sax – and doesn't vocalize at all – reminding us once again that he's a hell of a jazz player when he wants to be! Vinson plays here in a small combo led by pianist Oscar Peterson, who sets up an easygoing groove in his usual Pablo mode – cut through nicely by Eddie, who seems to give the record more of an edge than some of Oscar's other 70s dates! Trumpeter Harry Edison is also in the lead, and other players include Joe Pass on guitar, Dave Young on bass, and Martin Drew on drums – on titles that include "What's New", "Slooow Drag", "This One's For Jaws", "Stuffy", and "Broadway". Zoot SimsQuietly There – Zoot Sims Plays Johnny Mandel ... LP
Pablo, 1984. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Zoot Sims plays the music of Johnny Mandel – a wonderful combination that makes the record a real standout in Sims' career from the time! The tunes all have a really well-penned quality – that mix of heartfelt and groovy that Johnny Mandel did so brilliantly back in the 60s – often for larger soundtrack modes, but with a sense of feeling that makes them work even better in a small group lineup like this. Of course, it helps that Zoot's raspy tone is leading things off, in a well-recorded setting – and the other players in the group have a cohesive energy that's different than some of the other Pablo dates of the time – more serviceable swingers letting the lead man get all the best space on the tunes. Players include Mike Wofford on piano, Chuck Berghofer on bass, Nick Ceroli on drums, and Victor Feldman on vibes and percussion – and titles include "Zoot", "Quietly There", "Cinnamon & Clove", "Low Life", "Emily", and "A Time For Love". Pablo, 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Three slices of rare work by Duke Ellington – all recorded previously as semi-private recordings, and issued here in a short-lived 70s set! As you'd guess by the title, the tracks are all in "suite" form – that broader compositional style that dominated Ellington's later work, one in which he brought together complicated ideas with a very unified feel – often based around a single theme, but fleshed out beautifully with modes that were even more sophisticated than in his earlier work. Side one features "The Queen's Suite", recorded in 1959 with mostly full orchestra, but also a spare passage of just piano and bass – and side two features "The Goutelas Suite" from 1971, and "The Uwis Suite" from 1972. One of the great Pablo Records efforts to revisit the jazz sound of the 50s – but in fresh new ways allowed by the freer recording modes of the 70s! The album features Ella Fitgerald and Joe Pass, plus nobody else – just voice and guitar coming together in quiet, introspective ways that are completely sublime, and a very nice change from some of Ella's fuller band recordings of the few years before this album. And far from being sleepy, the intimacy of the record almost seems to set a new kind of fire – one that comes from the gentle persona of Ella, which is a far cry from the glass-breaking singer that she'd come to be known as in the mainstream! Titles include "Take Love Easy", "Once I Loved", "Lush Life", "You're Blase", "A Foggy Day", "I Want To Talk About You", and "You Go To My Head". CD

Tracks are long and very open – stretching out with a soulful majesty that goes beyond even Mongo's excellent jazz sides for the Vaya label at the end of the 70s. Milton Hamilton plays some great electric piano on the tracks – and the tunes also have some excellent work on soprano sax, tenor, and flute by Doug Harris, a player we know little about, but who we really love on this set! Dizzy Gillespie and Toots Thielemans join in on one track, but the core group is the real power of the the album – grooving hard in a mix of jazz, Latin, and a slight bit of funk – served up on long tracks that include "Para Ti", "Come Candela", "Sofrito", "Pajaro Cantor", "Havana", and "Amanecer". Glen Brown's often the producer here – helming the decks on a host of classic cuts from the early 70s – but he also emerges as the main character too, at times when he steps to the mic and adds in a bit of encouragement to the proceedings! Brown's not really working in deejay mode – he's more in the background on most cuts, but then gets to shine as the lead artist on some of the later tracks in the package – especially the numbers that feature Glen on melodica, blowing the sweet keyboard with a spacious style that's a bit like Augustus Pablo! One of John Cale's greatest moments as a solo artist – a wonderfully dark record that also features lots of great guitar from Chris Spedding, plus electronics from Brian Eno too! There's a stark, flat tone to Cale's lyrics here – a quality that almost echoes some of Eno's albums from around the time, especially the first two – but which takes on some shapes and phrasing that are definitely in the spirit of John's larger body of work too. But man, there's some very spooky bits here – even where you wouldn't expect them – that sense of surprise that Cale could always bring to sweeter moments with the Velvet Underground, re-focused here wonderfully for his own needs. Spiritmuse, 2020. New Copy ... $33.99 34.99
A great spiritual jazz group – one put together at the suggestion of Dwight Trible, and which features his amazing vocals as the cornerstone! The group have some sonic roots in the past, but also embrace some of the newer freedoms of the current spiritual jazz scene – modes that would be right at home in both the world of London's Brownswood Records, or Chicago's International Anthem – really moving past the obvious, and in ways that have Trible's vocals maybe sounding more righteous and important than ever before! Dwight's as much a poet as he is a singer – and gets superb accompaniment here from Derf Reklaw on congas and flute, Pablo Calogero on tenor and flutes, Christopher Garcia on indigenous percussion, and Breeze Smith on percussion, drums, and loops. There's a very deep sonic texture to the whole album – one that's echoed by the cover image – a dark tapestry of sound from which the voice, flute, and tenor especially soar out – on titles that include "Nature's Vision", "Blue Skies", "How Long", "Motherless Child", "Water Flow", "Movin On", "Olbap", and "Tragedy Escapes". The sound here is completely sublime – as Davis gets all chromatic and spooky over Evans' edgey arrangements – shimmering nicely in a perfect blend of modernism and lighter, more lyrical touches. The record's filled with loads of the kind of solos that Miles brought to his smaller group records – but they almost flower even more amazingly here in the larger setting. Titles include "Springsville", "Blues For Pablo", "New Rhumba", "Lament", and "Miles Ahead". This is the record that your dad bought to prove that he was cool – so buy it from us and keep up the family tradition! Features 4 bonus tracks too! CD
Also available Miles Ahead (with bonus tracks) ... CD 3.99

El Michels AffairAdult Themes ... LP
Big Crown, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
A really different groove from El Michels Affair – but one that reminds us again that the group is really amazing at just about anything they ever try to do! The adult themes here are modes borrowed from older European styles – some of the slinky funk of Serge Gainsbourg and some of his contemporaries, mixed with maybe a touch of Euro erotic film scoring – but all given that strong undercurrent of funk that we can always expect from Leon Michels and the group – arranged and produced with a really superb quality throughout! The drums are nice and heavy, the basslines sexy and slinky, and there's some occasional wordless female vocals and larger arrangements that really expand the palette of El Michels. Titles include "Enfant", "Villa", "Kill The Lights", "Life Of Pablo", "A Swift Nap", "Munecas", "Rubix", "Hipps", and a number of "Adult Theme" tracks. LP, Vinyl record album

Ella FitzgeraldComplete 1950 to 1960 Piano Duets ... CD
Verve/Essential Jazz (Spain), 1950s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A wonderful way to hear the genius of Ella Fitzgerald at its best – as the set features all tracks that just have the first lady of jazz singing alongside a piano – spare, open, and in a way that really lets you get all all the care and nuance that Ella can bring to a tune! Most of the recordings here are from the 50s – quite unusual for the time – and they're matched with one more set of duets that Ella Recorded for Pablo Records in the 70s, at a time when she was exploring more intimate modes in a really great way. There's a host of great surprises along the way – and the set begins with 8 tracks from the album Ella Sings Gershwin, with Ellis Larkins on piano – then moves to another Decca duet with Larkins on the album Songs In A Mellow Mood. The set follows with two spare numbers from the Songbook recordings for Verve – one with Oscar Peterson on piano, one with Paul Smith. Then, Smith returns on another set of 13 tracks taken from the rare Let No Man Write My Epitaph album for Verve – then adds in a spare duet with Tommy Flanagan from the 1964 A Juan Les Pins album – before ending with the full set list from the wonderful Ella & Oscar album from 1976 – 7 more duets with Oscar Peterson on piano. A once lost gem! Hudson's voice as a producer remains one of the most unique and idiosyncratic of his era, and this first LP issued under his own name stands as a shining document of his genius. Cut very near the time of his classic dub side Pick A Dub, this album shares the haunting mood that runs through the best of Hudson's work, all the while delivering a resounding roots message. The rhythms are fierce, laid down by Leroy Sibbles, Fully Fullwood, Santa Davis, Count Ossie and Augustus Pablo, a dozen mighty tracks in all: "Hunting", "Flesh Of My Skin", "Blood Of My Blood", "Testing Of My Faith", "Fight Your Revolution", "Darkest Night", "Talk Some Sense (Gamma Ray)", "Treasures Of The World", "My Nocturne", "I Shall Be Released", "No Friend Of Mine" and "Stabiliser". CD
(Remaster of the original Mamba pressing and longer titled version of the classic Flesh Of My Skin Blood Of My Blood – with three bonus tracks and new liner notes.) This item will not be delivered to you before Friday, October 22.
