Augustus PabloDubbing In A Africa ... CD
Abraham/Get On Down, Late 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Uber-classic dub from Augustus Pablo! Dubbing In A Africa was produced by Pablo and features a rhythm section of Bingy Bunny, Sly & Robbie and Gladdy. Here they deliver a nice, tight set of tunes which like many of Pablo's other classics, veer closer to rhythm workouts than deep space dub excursions – and we ain't complaining about that! Tremendous stuff from one the greats! Titles include "King Of Kings Dub", "Herbal Weed Dub", "Dub In Ethiopia", "Dubbing In A Africa", "Nigerian Love Dub", and "Mount Of Olives Dub". CD

Juan Pablo TorresPepper Trombone ... CD
RMM, 1997. Used ... $9.99 14.99
Brilliant Latin jazz from Juan Pablo Torres – a relatively contemporary recording, but one that cooks with a classic feel! During years when true Latin jazz was often lost to slick production or electric instrumentation, Torres always had a way of keeping his sound strong by sticking to the best older modes – core jazzy work by a hip combo that's usually heavy on percussion, and has plenty of room for solos. In addition to JP's trombone, the set also features a shifting lineup with Paquito D'Rivera on clarinet and alto, Jose Vera on tenor, and Arturo Sandoval on trumpet – on tracks that include "Elsa Song", "Rumba Del Cajon", "Dream Of Brazil", "Together Again", "Pick Your Clave", "Pepper Trombone", and "Tropiblues". ✨✧ Augustus PabloOriginal Rockers ... LP
Greensleeves (UK), 1970s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the deepest, trippiest sounds from the Jamaican scene in the 70s – a classic collection of dubbed-up cuts from Agustus Pablo – who throws in loads of sweet melodica lines to the rhythms, at least in between hits of the pipe he's smoking on the cover! Pablo took the laidback side of dub to a whole new level with a record like this – finding a way to let the rhythms bump out and swirl around themselves in space, then improvise his own keyboard lines with the airy tone of the melodica – itself already a haunting instrument, but taken to very original territory in the hands of Augustus. Titles include "Rockers Dub", "Up Warrika Hill", "Cassava Piece", "Tubby's Dub Song", "Jah Dread", "Brace A Boy", "Thunder Clap", "Park Lane Special", "New Style" and "A P Special". ✨✧ Paula Shocran/William Parker/Pablo DiazEl Templo ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The notes of this set have Matthew Shipp raving about the piano talents of Paula Shocran – and we can say that she not only has a sense of complexity and dexterity that maybe matches Shipp's work on the keys, but also works beautifully here with Matthew's frequent musical partner, bassist William Parker! The improvisations here are very loose and open – with each musician really retaining their own identity – not in challenge to the other, but as a way of establishing points of a triangle that are firm, and which allow for plenty of free play in between – qualities that drummer Pablo Diaz really brings to his work here too. All tracks are nice and long, and handled with a real sense of beauty – "Los Jardines", "Ausencia", "Capricornio", and "El Templo". CD

No Business (Lithuania), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Alto saxophonist Rob Brown really shines in a setting like this – a record with a very open-ended vibe, as Brown improvises freely in tandem with Juan Pablo Carletti on the drums – spinning things out over two very long tracks that are full of delightful surprises at every twist and turn! Brown has a really great way of handling his horn – blowing freely, but almost with an inherent sense of structure – not playing changes, or hitting a rhythm, but creating these patterns that really hold the whole thing together – still the farther side of tuneful, but almost there at times. Titles include "6BC" and "Children's Magical Garden" – both nice and long! CD

Count BasieBasie Big Band (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Pablo, 1975. Used ... $9.99
The Basie band is plenty big here – but never too much so to lose their confident swing of earlier years! The Count is still firmly at the helm at the time of this recording – leading and playing keys with that spacious, stepping quality that makes a Basie number of the later years groove so nicely. But there's also some wonderfully complex patterns on the horns – new shadings and colorings that come through on the album's batch of all original tracks by Sam Nestico, whose presence in the group in the 70s really helped shape its sound. Sam's work here is every bit as valuable as Neal Hefti's in the 50s – and tunes like "Front Burner", "Freckle Face", "Orange Sherbert", "Soft As Velvet", and "Midnight Freight" push the group far past the cliches they might have fallen into during these later years! Louie Bellson recorded in London – heading up a big band that features Frank Strazzeri on piano, Geurge Duvivier on bass, and a heck of a lot of horn players in the mix! The group's got a bold, upbeat sort of feel – similar to some of the later Buddy Rich groups of the 70s – and given Rich's popularity in the UK, one might almost think that Bellson's going for a similar vibe here! Tracks are long, with just the right amount of complicated overtones to keep things interesting – and titles include "Blues For Freddy", "Sing A Song Of Love", "Santos", "Put It Right There", "Jus Fer Us", and "Drum Squad". Ray BryantHere's Ray Bryant ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1976. Used ... $6.99
A simple trio album, but a really great one – the kind that almost re-ignites Ray Bryant's career, which is a hard thing to do, given how many records he's already got under his belt! But somehow, there's really something fresh going on here – an array of sounds and modes that goes far beyond his earlier sides for Columbie, Sue, and even Atlantic – and although Bryant was heard on the latter label only a few short years before this outing, the style here is something different altogether. There's almost a timeless approach here – but not in a hokey way – one that's still firmly grounded in the rhythmic impulses of Ray's soul jazz years, but which also easily traverses a piano jazz territory of many more eras – almost in the way of Jaki Byard, but without as much of a gimmick. Rhythm is by George Duvivier on bass and Grady Tate on drums, and we've never heard Ray sound so great in such a setting. Titles include "Prayer Song", "Lil Darlin", "Girl Talk", "Good Morning Heartache", and "Manteca". CD

John Coltrane live – in a setting that really shows the tenorist starting to stretch out a lot – almost hitting some of the freer modes of a few years later, but still keeping things swinging throughout! The rhythm section is superb – that legendary lineup of Jimmy Garrison on bass, McCoy Tyner on piano, and Elvin Jones on drums – creating this magical flow that really sets the tenor free – stretching out in a take of "Bye Bye Blackbird" that really transforms the tune – matched by a equally great reading of "Traneing In". Each long track takes up a side of the record – and both were recorded live in Europe in 1962. CD

A great reunion of Buddy DeFranco and Oscar Peterson – two players who recorded together famously for Verve in the 50s, working here on an 80s date under the supervision of old Verve head Norman Granz! The setting here is even more loose and laidback than in the 50s – that mellow Pablo Records mode that seems to bring in a lot more feeling to the players than some of their dates for other labels at the time – and Buddy's lost none of the charm in his tone, playing the clarinet with a soulful swing that's almost more like an alto sax at times! Three slices of rare work by Duke Ellington – all recorded previously as semi-private recordings, and issued here in a short-lived 70s set! As you'd guess by the title, the tracks are all in "suite" form – that broader compositional style that dominated Ellington's later work, one in which he brought together complicated ideas with a very unified feel – often based around a single theme, but fleshed out beautifully with modes that were even more sophisticated than in his earlier work. Side one features "The Queen's Suite", recorded in 1959 with mostly full orchestra, but also a spare passage of just piano and bass – and side two features "The Goutelas Suite" from 1971, and "The Uwis Suite" from 1972. Duke EllingtonIntimate Ellington ... CD
Pablo/OJC, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $7.99
A really well-titled set – as it offers up some more intimate takes on the Duke Ellington sound of the cusp of the 70s – with some especially nice trio and solo numbers that are well worth the price of the whole collection! The album starts with the amazing "Moon Maiden" – a track that has Ellington playing celeste, and reciting this weird little cosmic poem – almost in a Sun Ra-type aesthetic, and key proof that Duke was still stretching out a lot in his later years! There's also some excellent trio tracks that really get at that highly modern mode that Ellington hit at his Live At The Whitney session – mixed with a few more larger group numbers that, while not exactly intimate, still have a nicely laid back feel. In addition to "Moon Maiden", other tracks include "Tenz", "Eulb", "Layin On Mellow", "Edward The First", "Symphonette", and "Some Summer Fun". CD

A great tribute to the late bassist Jimmy Blanton – served up by his old boss Duke Ellington, working here on piano alongside the bass of Ray Brown! This spare piano/bass session is a rarity in Duke's catalog – and it's a real later gem that captures the warmth and imagination of the Ellington piano sound in a near-solo setting. Brown's tones are round and nicely soulful – always a treat, even if not entirely in Blanton's spirit – and titles include "Pitter Panther Patter", "Do Nothin Till You Hear From Me", "Sophisticated Lady", "See See Rider", and "Fragmented Suite For Piano & Bass" – a great extended piece that takes up all of side two! Ella Fitzgerald, recorded in a nice lean setting – with mostly just the piano of Oscar Peterson to back her up, plus a bit of extra bass from Ray Brown on a few of the album's tracks! We love Fitzgerald in this mode – which is quite a change from some of her more familiar 70s work, and really shows the singer in her best light possible – handling things right out front, with an inherent sense of swing that's completely sublime! Peterson is great here too – playing with some of those more ragged edges that you'll get on his spare sessions for Pablo – some nice bluesy undercurrents that really help shape the sound of the record. Pablo/OJC, 1983. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderful reunion of the team of Frank Foster and Frank Wess – caught here in an easy-going and laidback style that's miles away from their work with Count Basie! The youthful rhythm section of Kenny Barron, Rufus Reid, and Marvin Smitty Smith really adds a lot to the set – giving the record a later sort of soul jazz vibe, one that's perfect for the pair to solo over in open-ended lines. Both Franks play tenor sax, and Wess plays flute and alto as well – while Foster does some excellent work on soprano sax. Titles include "Bay Street", "Two For The Blues", "But For The Likes Of You", "Nancy With The Laughing Face", "Your Beauty Is A Song Of Love", and "A Time For Love". CD

Pablo, 1980. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
The trio of trumpeters meets the Oscar Peterson 4 – in a session of long tracks that have a liveish feel in the best Dizzy Gillespie mode! Most of the work here is in classic hardbop blowing style – with the trumpeters stating the head, then breaking out into well-voiced solos that outdo each other with inspiration – but there's also a bit of the lighter, airier quality that showed up on Dizzy's records of the generation too. The horns are mixed a bit too – so that some trumpets are muted, some are open, and Terry plays a bit of flugelhorn – and Peterson's quartet features Joe Pass on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Bobby Durham on drums. Titles include "Daahoud", "Chicken Wings", "Just Friends", and "The Champ". LP, Vinyl record album

Milt JacksonSoul Believer – Milt Jackson Sings & Plays ... LP
Pablo, 1978. Near Mint- ... $8.99
Milt Jackson sings, in addition to his familiar vibes on this set – an unusual date done during his Pablo Records run of the late 70s – and a surprisingly great little album overall! As you might guess, Jackson's not the greatest singer in jazz – but it's this quality that also makes the record really great – kind of an honest approach to the tunes that reminds us of the sort of singers we used to catch at south side jam sessions here in Chicago – vocalists whose love of a tune was so great, they were willing to get out and take whatever chances they may – showing a care for the lyrics that's almost greater than a more proficient singer. Electric piano backs up Jackson on most of the vocal numbers – creating a cool, soulful glow – and other players on the record include Cedar Walton on keyboards, Dennis Budimir and John Collins on guitar, Billy Higgins on drums, and Ray Brown on bass – who also produced the session. Titles include "Heartstrings", "Don't Worry Bout Me", "Yes Sir That's My Baby", "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face", "Someone I Love", and "Parking Lot Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe PassJoe Pass At The Montreux Jazz Festival 1975 ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1975. Used ... $9.99
The guitar of Joe Pass was one of the best-recorded instruments by Pablo Records in the 70s – as you'll hear on this wonderful live date from the label! Pass was a player who first rose to fame in the 60s, but wasn't always recorded that well – but in the 70s, Pablo sides like this really opened up his sound – and this completely solo live date from the Montreux Jazz Fest is possibly one of his best-ever from the time! Joe has a subtle swing that really comes through, even without a rhythm section – and his scope of sounds is tremendous – ranging up and down the guitar, but all without sounding gimmicky at all – showing dexterity that few other players could match, all while holding down swing without help from any other players. Titles include "Nuages", "How Long Has This Been Going On", "Blues For Nina", "Lil Darlin", "The Very Thought Of You", "Nobs", and "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life". CD

Much looser than usual for Oscar Peterson, and we mean that in a good way – a very open-ended jam session recorded at Montreux in 1977, produced by Norman Granz with very much the same style as his Verve sets of this nature from the 50s! Peterson's billed as the leader, but the pianist has some very bold company here too – Dizzy Gillespie and Clark Terry on trumpets, and Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor – all of whom get in some great solo moments on the album's longish tracks. Other players include Niels Orsted Henning Pedersen on bass and Bobby Durham on drums – and titles include "Ali & Frazier", "Just In Time", "If I Were A Bell", and "Things Ain't What They Used To Be". A striking little record – and the kind that both players could only have made with the new freedoms in jazz recording of the 70s! Although Peterson and Gillespie had played together before on earlier Verve albums, the setting was never like this – because the album's only a duet between trumpet and piano, with no other instrumentation at all – yet the sound is amazing swinging! Peterson works almost as a one man rhythm section here – bouncing the tunes with plenty of hard inflections on his left hand – and setting up a swing that Dizzy blows over with warmly muted tones. There's a quality here that's personal – but not in that "oh look at us, we're such big stars" sort of way – and titles include "Mozambique", "Caravan", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "Blues For Bird", and "Con Alma" – always a treat to hear in a setting like this! Late Mongo – but great Mongo! The CD features work recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1980 – a wonderful jazz-based performance that was never issued at the time! Tracks are long and very open – stretching out with a soulful majesty that goes beyond even Mongo's excellent jazz sides for the Vaya label at the end of the 70s. Milton Hamilton plays some great electric piano on the tracks – and the tunes also have some excellent work on soprano sax, tenor, and flute by Doug Harris, a player we know little about, but who we really love on this set! Dizzy Gillespie and Toots Thielemans join in on one track, but the core group is the real power of the the album – grooving hard in a mix of jazz, Latin, and a slight bit of funk – served up on long tracks that include "Para Ti", "Come Candela", "Sofrito", "Pajaro Cantor", "Havana", and "Amanecer". A historic meeting between pianist Art Tatum and tenor sax giant Ben Webster – recorded in 1956, but only first issued by Pablo Records in the 70s! At some level, it's clear that Tatum's the star of the sessions – as most tracks start out with that introspective and often complicated approach to the keys that marks his trio and solo work – but Webster always slides in just in time to keep the record from being a standard Tatum outing – blowing with a crisp tone that's beautifully recorded here, and hardly concerned at all with the presence of Red Callender on bass and Bill Douglass on drums – who are much lower in the mix. Titles include "Night & Day", "Where Or When", "My Ideal", "Gone With The Wind", and "All The Things You Are". CD features 5 bonus tracks – all solo piano numbers by Tatum, recorded in LA in December of 1953. The setting is easygoing and relaxed – far more so than most of Vaughan's records from many years past – and backing is provided by Roland Hanna on piano, Joe Pass on guitar, Andy Simpkins on bass, and Harold Jones on drums – all grooving in a warmly rounded mode that seems to further the already-great sound of Sarah's vocals at this point in her career. The record's one you might pass by because of the date, but it's easily one of the greatest Vaughan albums from later years – and tracks include "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", "That's All", "Seasons", "Love Dance", "The Island", "In Love In Vain", and "Autumn Leaves". The setting is spare and simple – backing by a quartet that includes Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Ray Brown, and Louis Bellson – but all players are nicely relaxed here, and never too uptight, or trying to over-express their place in the lineup – and instead step forward gently, quietly, to match Sarah's wonderfully mature vocals on the record. ✨✧ Freddie Hubbard & Oscar PetersonFace To Face ... LP
Pablo, 1982. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Freddie Hubbard's very much in a back-to-basics mode at this point in his career – and what better place to go back to basics than at the Pablo label, where Freddie's working in an acoustic mode with the Oscar Peterson combo! The style is a far cry from Hubbard's electric records of the 70s – but the tunes still have a nicely spacious feel that shows lessons learned at CTI – a style that makes Peterson sound a bit hipper than usual, and which definitely has Freddie as the boss of the set. Other players include Joe Pass on guitar, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Martin Drew on drums – and tracks include "All Blues", "Thermo", "Weaver Of Dreams", "Portrait Of Jenny", and "Tippin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cut corner.)
