Changing Face Of Harlem – The Savoy Sessions

LP (Item 528297) Savoy, Early 40s — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold
Includes selections by Buck Ram All Stars, Pete Brown Quintette, Hot Lips Page, Ben Webster, Herbie Fields, Tiny Grimes, Charlie Parker, Miss Rhapsody, and Clyde Hart.  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mid 70s white label promo. Cover has a cutout hole, hype sticker, light wear, and a promo sticker in back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Trumpets All Out (Savoy)
Savoy, Mid 50s. Very Good
As you might guess from the title, the album's an all-trumpet affair, one that features 5 different players on the instrument – Art Farmer, Emmet Berry, Charlie Shavers, Ernie Royal, and Harold Baker – supported by spare rhythm from the trio of Don Abney on piano, Wendell Marshall on ... Bird's Night – The Music Of Charlie Parker
Savoy, 1957. Near Mint-
A really well done memorial to the (then) recently-departed Charlie Parker – cut with an unusual lineup that features Cecil Payne on baritone sax, Phil Woods on alto, and Frank Socolow on tenor – all working through long, laidback takes of 4 of Bird's best known compositions! There's a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hank Jones

Trio
Savoy, 1955. Very Good+
Rock-solid trio work from the Hank Jones group of the 50s – a combo that includes Hank on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums! The group was the rhythm section on countless dates for Savoy Records at the time, but here they're featured strongly on their own – as ... LP, Vinyl record album
Savoy, 1957. Very Good+
One of a few albums cut in America by French 50s modernist Andre Hodeir – a set of compositions arranged and conducted by Hodeir himself, featuring American players that include Idrees Sulieman and Donald Byrd on trumpets, Hal McKusick on alto and bass clarinet, Bobby Jaspar on tenor and ... Vido Musso/Stan Getz

Loaded
Savoy, 1945/1946. Near Mint-
A very cool full length set on Savoy – one that's a 50s issue of earlier material from their initial 78rpm run of recordings! The set begins with some excellent small combo work from tenorist Vido Musso – a player who really got some great exposure on the label, working here in a group ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz For Playboys
Savoy, Mid 50s. Sealed
One of those classic 50s sessions in which a bunch of Count Basie players split off from the bigger group and do some great small combo work on their own! The album is leader-less in its billing – but only because all the players are so well tuned to each other, and have such a simpatico ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz Is Busting Out All Over
Savoy, 1958. Very Good+
A compilation album, but one that's classic enough to stand on its own – thanks to a rock-solid roster of talent from the mighty Savoy Records catalog of the 50s! The format here follows in the looser blowing session mode of some of Savoy's best sides of the period – and groups shift ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hard-swingin tracks from Ernie Wilkins – one of the most soulful arrangers of his time, working here in a wonderful all-star session from the 50s! The album's definitely got the "top brass" promised in the title – a lineup that features Donald Byrd, Ray Copeland, Idrees ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roland Kirk

We Free Kings
Mercury, 1961. Very Good
A hell of a record from the young Roland Kirk – one of his first for Mercury Records, and the start of a great run of genius in the 60s! Kirk is mindblowing here – playing tenor, flute, manzello, and stritch – often at the same time, as pictured on the cover – a mode that's ... LP, Vinyl record album

House Party
Blue Note, 1958. Good
One of the best hard-wailing all-star sessions that Jimmy did so well for Blue Note!
