A 70s album, issued at a time when Esther Phillips was really riding high with her records on the Kudo label – but a set that brings together unissued sides recorded for Atlantic in the 60s! The style is a great mix of rootsy soul and hipper jazz – arranged by Onzy Matthews on side one ... LP, Vinyl record album
A landmark album – not only for Esther Phillips, who's emerging here as a gifted young lady, very different from her R&B years, but also for the genre of country soul, which was emerging to be one of the most important strands in the new music during the 60s! Esther's not fooling around ... LP, Vinyl record album
Not a live album – as you might think from the title – but a tight batch of tunes that shows the full funk and soul talents of the legendary Esther Phillips! The album's got a nicely dark undercurrent at times – a sound that's not as smooth as some of Esther's other Kudu albums ... LP, Vinyl record album

Backings are by James Brown's old reedman, Pee Wee Ellis ... LP, Vinyl record album
Smooth and sophisticated grooving from Esther Phillips – a record that really has her shaking off the rag-tag and rootsy modes of earlier years, and gliding sweetly into the mainstream! Phillips' vocals are still as soulful and compelling as ever, but the backings are quite full – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Given her start as a rough-hewn child junkie R&B singer, it's hard to believe that Esther's the one singing these beautiful ballads and soul tracks! The album's fantastic, though – and it shows Esther maturing into one of the more fantastic vocalists of her generation. Oliver Nelson, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Smooth jazzy soul, with excellent production by Wayne Henderson and his At-Home Productions team. David Oliver's got a deep baritone voice, and it slithers sexily through tracks like "Private Secretary", "Who Are You", "Take My Emptiness", and the great mellow groover ... LP, Vinyl record album
A classic bit of tripped-out soul from Buddy Miles – put together with a lot of nice psychedelic production, and an overall sound that stays nice and deep on the bottom end of things – and lets Buddy rock out heavily on rootsy vocals. There's no real standout funky numbers, but the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Classic cuts on Salsoul are remixed by the legendary Larry Levan – guru of the Paradise Garage scene, and a mixer who always knew how to make the floor move! Tracks include "I Got My Mind Made Up" by Instant Funk, "Double Cross" by First Choice, "First Time ... LP, Vinyl record album
A sweet album of ballads and late nite love songs from Clyde McPhatter – one that has him going head to head with other 50s balladeers, like Jesse Belvin, Tony Wilson, or maybe even Johnny Mathis! That great McPhatter rasp is still nicely present, even amidst the strings and fuller backings ... LP, Vinyl record album
