Blues Summit (Side By Side/Back To Back)

LP (Item 515437) Verve, 1959 — Condition: Very Good
2LP Gatefold
A great little album that builds on the strength of Johnny Hodges' small group 50s sessions for Verve – and which lets Duke Ellington in on some of the action! The format is nicely stripped-down throughout – featuring Hodges in sextet and septet formation with players that include Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Les Spann, Lawrence Brown, and Jo Jones. And while Duke's actually only on piano on some of the tracks on the album (Billy Strayhorn handles keys on the others), the sessions are still a great example of small combo Ellingtonia at its best! Titles include "Ruint", "Stompy Jones", "Big Shoe", "Going Up", "Just A Memory", and "You Need to Rock". Added to the original album is a full bonus album here – done in a similar format, and titled Back To Back – with titles that include "Weary Blues", "Royal Garden Blues", "Loveless Love", "St Louis Blues", and "Wabash Blues".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Wes Montgomery

Bumpin'
Verve, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
An incredible album from Wes Montgomery – and the beginning of a whole new sound for his guitar! Wes moves away from his small combo soul jazz roots on the set – and hits a wonderfully sweet new vibe with larger arrangements from Don Sebesky – bigger backdrops that fill in the ... Focus
Verve, 1961. Very Good Gatefold
Oft-overlooked album that's actually one of Getz's most far-reaching of the 60s! Recorded in the year before he got caught up in his bossa pop frenzy, the record shows Getz as a darkly toned modernist, weaving out complex solos over the album's extended suite "Focus", written and ... Jimmy Smith

Hobo Flats
Verve, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
A mighty pairing of Jimmy Smith and Oliver Nelson – one that has the heavy Hammond of Smith set up in some sparkling jazz backdrops from Nelson! Gene Krupa

Sing Sing Sing
Verve, Early 50s. Very Good+
A tasty early 50s session for Verve – one that has Gene reprising some tunes and a style he used in the Benny Goodman years, but in a way that's more open and laidback – in keeping with Verve's swing-based small group sessions of the time! Even more important, though, is the fact that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pres & Sweets
Verve, 1956. Near Mint-
A classic Verve pairing of two of its greatest soloists – both recorded here in a laidback, easily-swinging session that allows both players to shine equally! 2 LP reissue of some of the great early Stan Getz sessions for Savoy, with lots of great players like Serge Chaloff, Allen Eager, and Brew Moore.
